May God Bless each family present. And bless our entire Holy Family Parish.
Make it like the family of your Son. May our moments of sorrow, give way to the seasons of joy. May the memory of harsh words fade before the warmth of a loving touch. May the tears of sorrow be
replaced by the music of laughter. May resentment be banished from our families, and may forgiveness reign in our hearts. Today and everyday. Amen!

True or false? The word LENT comes from the Latin root “Lentus” meaning to slow down. See page 5 for the answer and for other information about the season of Lent.

Dear Family of God. The month of February is
almost here and we thank God for seeing us
through the first month in the year 2018. It is
His blessing and gracious assistance that has
brought us this far. The year is still brand new
and we hope for better things to happen to us.
This year the Lord is taking over the celebration
of Valentine's Day because Ash Wednesday falls
on the same day that we celebrate the Valen-
tine's Day. I believe this year the Lord is telling
us to tone down our feasting and remind our-
selves that we have a place to go and that we are
dust and into dust we shall return.
I also want to thank the parishioners who sup-
ported us at St. Apollinaris Church for the Mass
of Hope for those affected by the October fires.
Special thanks to the Holy Family Choir for grac-
ing the occasion by joining St. A's Choir and the
Bishop to celebrate the event. It was a blessing
for all of us to be present to comfort and con-
sole the victims.
February 9, 2018 at 6:00 pm we shall celebrate
Reconciliation for our CCD kids preparing to re-
ceive the Sacraments. You are all cordially invit-
ed to be part of this celebration and seize the
opportunity to use the Sacrament of Reconcilia-
tion as well. Some priests have been invited to
join us and I hope you will come in numbers. We
are also working hard with those involved with
our Church construction to break ground this
year. We need your prayers and support in any
way you can to make this a possibility. I love you
all.

“Lentus” in Latin does in
fact mean slow. For you
musicians, you probably
know that if the director
gives the direction
“Lentamente” or “Lentando”
that the
performers slow down
their music pace.
“Lentus” found its way from Latin into Middle English
where the word “Lenten” came to mean the days of
spring which became longer, allowing us to slow
down our lives. In other Germanic languages, the
word simply came to mean “Spring.”
Thus, for us, LENT is a time period in the spring,
where we are asked to slow down and think about
the progress of our lives. Specifically for Christians,
it is a forty-day period preceding Easter (beginning
on Ash Wednesday) were we are asked to prepare
ourselves for the Great Feast of the Resurrection
though prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving and
fasting/abstinence.
Officially, Lent is comprised of 40 days and 40
nights (similar to the time Jesus spent fasting in the
desert preceding his temptation by the Devil), count-
ing Mondays through Saturdays, but excluding Sun-
days. The days of Lent plus Holy Week end with the
Easter Vigil celebrated at Holy Family at sundown on
Holy Saturday, the night before Easter Sunday.
Further, here at Holy Family, we celebrate special ob-
servances during Lent such as Stations of the Cross
every Friday evening at 7:30 pm and Meager Meals
on the middle four Fridays of Lent at 6:00 pm. These
give us additional opportunities to practice our fast-
ing and abstinence and our time of prayer for
thanksgiving and penance. See the next page for in-
formation about fasting and abstinence.
Another practice typically recognized during Lent is
to “give something up” as a form of self-denial to
help us think about the importance of the spiritual
side of our lives and less about the physical side of
our lives. Rather than “giving something up” for Lent
(such as movies, chocolate, computer games, etc.),
more and more people are determined to “add some-
thing” for Lent (such as
scripture reading, more
frequent Mass, generosity
to charities, saying the ro-
sary, visiting the sick,
etc.). How do you plan to
use Lent as a time of
spiritual renewal?
Ash Wednesday
Ashes will be distributed
at Holy Family at the
following times on
February 14th:
8:00 AM Mass
10:00 AM to 2:00
PM in Parish Office
5:15 PM Mass
7:30 PM Mass
A reference to wearing ashes as an out-
ward sign of repentance may be found in
the Book of Nehemiah (among other scrip-
ture locations) in 9:1 - “On the twenty-
fourth day of the same month, the
Israelites gathered together, fasting and
wearing sackcloth and putting ashes on
their heads.”
The practice of placing ashes on one’s
forehead dates back only until the 11th
Century, recognizing the 9th Chapter of
the Book of Daniel where God pardons the
people of Jerusalem after Daniel pleaded
in prayer and petition to God while fasting,
wearing sackcloth and putting ashes over
his head. Ashes in the form of crosses on
the forehead appear only half a century
ago but the tradition has become wide-
spread as a symbol of our mortality and
the need for repentance.
Typically, while the
ashes are being
placed on the fore-
head, the priest,
deacon or special
minister typically
says, “Remember,
you are dust and to
dust you shall
return,” or “Turn
away from sin and
be faithful to the Gospel.” Have a blessed
and meaningful Ash Wednesday!

Fast and Abstinence
The norms of our Church call for
the practice of fast and abstinence
during Lent as a reminder that our
hearts and minds should be totally
focused toward God so that He may
be the source of our strength during our period of fast-
ing or our abstaining from meat. Here are those norms
for fasting and abstinence:
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of
FASTING for Catholics. This means eating a
single full meal at some point in the day with other
smaller meals being permitted so long as combined
they do not equal a full meal. With this in mind, on
those two days of fasting, we should be aware of what
we are and why we are doing it - turning away from our
sins and using the fast as a form of penance. putting
other actions above the actions of consumption.
These norms of FASTING do not apply to those under
18 years of age nor over 59 years. Adults who have
medical or dietary restrictions as part of their normal
eating habits are not bound by the rules of fasting ac-
cording to the U.S. Conference of Bishops.
Also, every Friday (plus Ash Wednesday) in Lent includ-
ing Good Friday are days of ABSTINENCE from meat for
all Catholics over the age of 13. Again, people with spe-
cial dietary requirements are not bound to ABSTINENCE.
Meat is considered to be the flesh or organs of mam-
mals and fowl. Fish and shellfish are permitted as are
animal derived products such as eggs, butter or gelatin
which do not have any meat taste. Here too, we should
be aware of what we are doing and why
we are doing it - being aware of changing
our normal eating habits allows us to per-
form an act of penance or repentance as
an active sign of prayer for forgiveness
from our sins.

Lenten Prayers for Hungry People

and your family observe Lent in 2018 (as prepared by
Bread for the World, a religious-based NGO whose

by 2030). Bread for the World works to alert all people
about the possibility of eradicating hunger and to
change the policies and conditions that allow hunger
to persist. The organization advocates on behalf of
legislation that addresses the root causes of hunger
and programs that help the hungry such as food
stamps, WIC, school lunch programs, etc.

On the blackboard at a Catholic elementary school:
John 3:16
Lunch 11:30
The children were lined up in the cafeteria at that
same Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the
head of the table was a large pile of apples.
The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple
tray: "Take only one. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end
of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cook-
ies. One youngster whispered to another, "Take all
you want.
God’s watching the apples."
The pastor told his congregation, "Next week I plan
to preach about the sin of lying. To help you under-
stand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17."
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his
sermon, the priest asked for a show of hands. He
wanted to know how many had read Mark 17.
Every hand went up.
The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only 16
chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the
sin of lying."
The young lad told his Religious Education teacher:
“I made a New Year’s Resolution to eat spinach. If I
can’t stand it, I’ll give it up for Lent.”
Q: What do you call a parishioner who sleepwalks
during the sermon?
A: A roamin’ Catholic.
Q: What kind of bird is that flying around in the
church?
A: Probably a cardinal.
Q: No I don’t think so. What else could it be?
A: Maybe a bird of prey.
It’s OK to share some religious humor. When he was
Pope (from 1958 to 1963), Blessed John XXIII was
asked how many people worked in the Vatican. The
Pope thought about it for a bit and replied, “About
half of them!”
