Greetings Nobles, Ladies, and Friends,

The New Year’s Day Brunch was another enjoyable start to the year. It is always

wonderful to see everyone enjoying a great meal and getting excited for the coming year. Geri, Chef Mike, and the entire staff outdid themselves yet again.

The Annual Meeting was well attended. I want to extend my congratulations to all Nobles elected and appointed to leadership positions for 2019. Over the years it has become clear to me that not all Temples are run as effectively and fluidly as ours is. This is a testament to the types of Nobles that we have throughout Osman, and you can all be proud of the exemplary Temple you have built. I would like to thank the Nobles of the Osman Provost, my original Unit, and Noble Chris Zack of the Osman Pipe Band, P.P. Mike Awada, P.P. Bruce Thomas and P.P. Rich Purcell for making the Installation a special event. I would also like to extend a special thank you to my grandfather, P.P. Frank Peterson, and to my father, Noble Harris Haugen, for being there to bestow on me the

Potentate’s Fez. It is a night that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

The weather was perfect and attendance at the Potentate’s Reception was impressive. Again, I thank the Osman Pipe Band for leading the Divan into the reception area. The food and fellowship were extraordinary, and I am grateful for everyone who attended the reception to receive the 2019 Divan. The handshakes and hugs and endless conversations were exceptional, and it was humbling to witness the long line of attendees for 2+ hours. A huge thank you goes out to Illustrious Sir Peter Ekholm and Lady Biz for coordinating

the festivities. I would like to thank Ladies Sandy Nehm, Sharon Purcell, Terri Thomas, and Julie Olsen for pouring coffee, Chief Aide Dave Roussopoulos and Lady Linda for all of their assistance, and the Potentate’s Aides that were in attendance to make the rest of us look good. Finally, I would like to thank Noble Ron Pew for gifting me a beautiful hand-crafted gavel, and the Osman Women’s Auxiliary for presenting me with a Wheaties box with my picture on it. My daughters think I am cool for being on a cereal box!

One of my favorite weeks of the year is the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The streets were

once again packed, and we represented Osman Shriners well. The oasis also saw us perform a mini-ceremonial for Nobles wishing to join and parade with us. What a great time to join Osman Shriners; some of them having just come through the One-Day-To-Masonry on January 19th. The Osman Clowns and other Nobles participated in the Torchlight Parade on Saturday, February 2nd, carrying the Circus banner and passing out coupons for tickets. It’s hard to believe, but the Circus is right around the corner.

The Annual Club and Unit seminar on Saturday, February 2nd was well attended, and thank you to Oriental Guide Jim Gratias and the Club and Unit officers, Joel Starks, Eric Mundt, and Chris Johnson for coordinating the day and for providing such important information to the Club and Unit Officers. This event is vital to the growth of Osman, and I want to extend my gratitude to all of those who were in attendance.

“TOGETHER WE CAN”

One of the primary items covered at the Club and Unit Seminar is membership. We have set a goal this year of initiating 60 new Nobles and of achieving Gold. This is an ambitious goal but one that I feel is realistic given the time and effort put in by our Membership Co-Chairs Jerry Johnson and Tim Bass. It is difficult to articulate how much work they have put into membership. Building on the momentum they have created, along with P.P. Mike Nehm’s efforts last year, I feel confident we can achieve Gold. A major part of enticing new members is our initiative to decrease the total cost to join Osman to $150. This fee includes everything; dues, per capita, a Fez, a Fez case, and a stiffener, and is nearly a $300 value for only $150. We want to grow Osman and to invest in new Nobles, and we don’t want the initial cost of membership to deter others from joining our great fraternity. As with everything in life we must consider value. What are getting for

what we pay? It is important that we communicate to potential Nobles that there is no better time than the present to join Osman Shriners. Please watch for dates for membership events that will be held at 7 locations throughout Osman territory under the banner of “Discover what it means to be a Mason & Shriner.” Please bring any interested men to one of these events and get to know other Shrine Masons.

I would like to conclude by expressing my deepest gratitude for entrusting me with the role of Potentate for 2019. I look forward to seeing all of you throughout the year.

The Chief’s CornerHello Nobles! The

2019 installation and reception to honor our new Potentate, Anders Haugen, and the Divan went great! I hope everyone was able to attend and

enjoy the day. Congratulations to Greg Sailer, the new Outer Guard joining the Divan.

Our first 2019 parade was the St. Paul Winter Carnival on Saturday, January 26th. Thanks to all the units, Nobels and everyone who helped make this first parade a success! The Oasis, which was held at the Masonic Center on Plato Avenue, was a lot of fun and well attended. As usual, the chili and hot dogs were a big hit! Thank you to the Aides who dedicated their time to serve their fellow Nobels and Ladys before the parade. You are much appreciated. I would also like to thank the Osman Shriners who attended the Torch Light Parade on Saturday February 2nd.

The Osman’s Club and Unit Seminar, was held February 2nd at the Spur. We heard from many of

the Club and Unit Heads on topics from Shriners Protocol to events for the year to come. This was a well-attended and informative event to keep everyone in the loop. I hope you were able to attend.

The objective in 2019 is to make sure that Club and Units are aware of when the Temple Parades are going to be so they can get them on their parading schedule early. This way we have a good attendance at these parades. I will continue to keep the parade information updated, and try to get you the details as soon as they are available to me.

2019 Temple Parades

The year 2018 ended with members of the Shrine Club ringing bells for the Red Kettle program, for the Salvation Army. The first Friday in December is the date we work in

as many locations in Austin as possible. This year we collected $6,100.00 and $5,000.00 of that amount will be matched by Minnesota Masonic Charities (MMC), bringing the total raised to $11,000.00. Shown at his station at Sterling Drug is Noble Dean Johnson, who also organizes the schedule for Lodge members who collected $4,000.00 on the Fridays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This amount will also be matched by MMC. These dollars raised by both Shrine and Lodge members is specified for the Austin Area Food Shelf.

The last event of 2018 was the annual Shrine Holiday Dinner held at the Austin Country Club. A good turnout enjoyed fellowship, food, and entertainment by the Austin High School Austinaires, a vocal group of over 20 students. As the result of a mini-ceremonial held during our evening program, we welcomed new Noble Scott Smith Congratulations Scott!

Donations for 2018 were presented with approximately $8,500.00 being presented to Shrine and local agencies. Included was a donation to the Austinaires and an additional $1,000.00 to Rose West for the Hospital Auxiliary, bringing the total donated to the Auxiliary in 2018 to $3,500.00.

The year 2019 started for the Austin Area Nobles and ladies with a meeting at Barley’s on Thursday, January 10th. A great deal

of business items were discussed, with Mathew Woodworth presiding at his first meeting as President.

A report on 2018 finances for the Club and Band was presented by Neil Hanson, followed by discussion for future activities that reflect our ability to make contributions.

Brad Stout presented an update on parade activities that included maintenance items for the band bus and trailer. Discussion also took place regarding the number of parades, since at least one of the parades in which we have normally participated might be a Temple Parades in 2019.

Austin will be the site of a Lift One Up program on June 8th. Matt

Woodworth explained the program and what is needed to prepare for that event. The raffle ticket program was also discussed. Noble Otto Volkert reported on the Circus Promotion program for 2019, and materials were made available to members. Nobles were reminded that we are one of the best Osman Clubs and Units for the sale of the circus promotion items.

Mary Hanson, Worthy Matron of Unity Chapter #29 in Austin thanked Nobles and ladies for their support of

OES activities and reminded them of the Spaghetti Dinner to be held on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3rd. It is one of the fund raiser activities that Unity Chapter has during the year. All are invited to attend. Serving is from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., and cost is $10.00.

Neil Hanson asked Past President Gary Brolsma to come forward and presented him with a Past President’s pin.

President Woodworth distributed a calendar of activities for 2019 indicating meeting dates and possible locations. The February 14th meeting will be held in the Roosevelt Room of the Holiday Inn, Austin.

Legion of HonorWelcome to our 2019

Divan and Illustrious Potentate! The Legion of Honor looks forward to serving you and Osman in 2019!

By the time this is published in February, the Legion will have, hopefully, been approved to purchase a very special pickup for Osman and the Legion of Honor’s use in the coming years, confirmation to come in the March Newsletter. If we were successful, it will mean the Legion of Honor and Osman Shrine will have

a vehicle of their own to pull the Jeep to Osman Parades and or carry flags on the truck with our special racks made years ago to fit a full-sized truck!

By February we will have had another great time representing Osman at one of the coldest yet most fun parades of the season. After all, you have to have fun with the weather potential for marching 2 miles in Minnesota in January! Thanks to the Legion Nobles who participated and performed so well! Thanks to our Chief of Staff, Neil Clymer and Osman aides for the Oasis before the parade! As always it was

great!

We will be working at the Circus next. We need members and family members & friends to help us man the gates, take tickets and welcome some of the greatest people, to the Greatest Show on Earth, The Osman Shrine Circus. This will be Osman’s 96th consecutive

year, the longest running Shrine Circus in the World! What an honor to serve Osman by taking tickets, manning the gates to help with security and carrying the colors proudly at each of the 10 performances.

The Legion of Honor is not only for Veteran’s, even though we would desperately encourage them to join us, in providing the colors and honor guard duties. We welcome all Patriots to join our ranks. We have a lot of fun and do many families, focused activities, and encourage the Lady6’s at most of these events. Most of all veteran or no, when you walk down those streets carrying those flags it is impossible to convey the honor we feel! Come join us and feel this also!

As I sit and write my last official newsletter article as Rochester Dragon Patrol President, I can reflect back on what a good year we had. We set some new parade guidelines

for ourselves, limiting the amount of parades we would attend, limiting to one a weekend, (which I think we didn’t hold true to this one) and changing our fee structure. It seems with the ageing crew, the weather, family commitments and work played out to our best interest.

Having just completed an awesome year, we are all looking forward to the new officers taking over and looking forward to another parade season not to far down the road. For us the season usually starts early in May and goes into September.

We had our Annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers on January 18, 2019 at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Rochester. I would like to once again say Thank You to all of our dedicated Dragon Patrol Members, their spouses and families for allowing us to have a great year and for their

participation when ever they could. I would like to also say Thank You once again to the 2018 Officers for full filling their positions and wish the Officers of 2019 the best of the year to come.

As President, I think any time some thing good comes to an end, you can reflect back on the year and reminisce on what took place. Having the best group of guys to work with, we were able to accomplish many great things. We took part in 18 town celebrations and parades, donated $10,500.00 to the various bodies of the Osman Shrine, worked the 95th Annual Shrine Circus, Participated in Hospital Days, Traveled to Deadwood, South Dakota for MSA in August, the Annual Osman Family Picnic, Enjoyed the Annual Hufli with a great turn out of our Rochester Shriners just to name a few. When looking back on what we did, its hard to pick out just one favorite thing, we did so much and made so many smiles on the streets while we paraded by both the young and the old. Being a Shriner is probably one of the best things any of us have ever done and don’t regret it at all!!

With all of this being said, it is

time to reflect back on the year and pass out some well deserving awards. A special award goes to Al Shufelt for participating in all 18 parades in the 2018 season. Attended all 9 Dragon Patrol Meetings in 2018-Ryan Colligan, Bus Driver of the year - driving the Dragon Bus to the most parades (12) in 2018-Bruce Thomas, Rookie Dragon of the Year, he was a new member this year, got his CDL so he could also drive bus if needed, attended 6 of the 9 membership meetings, and participated in 13 parades-Jason Kennedy. Then with all due respect, it was with great honor, that I got to present the Dragon of the Year Award to Ron Lamkin, Ron was always just a phone call away and he always kept in touch with me and was always willing to help in any way needed. Thank You Ron for all your dedication to the Rochester Dragon Patrol, the Shrine and to our great Organization, Congratulations on being the 2018 Dragon on the Year!!

Welcome to 2019, from all of us at the Alexandria Shrine Club. It is hard to believe, as you read this, that we are in the second month of the year already. As Masons & Shriners,

we look forward to the challenges of yet another year and working together we can make this a great one. Thanks to everyone who helped out during our 2018 parade season. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2019. As the newly elected president of the Alexandria Shrine Club, I would like to thank everyone for the confidence you are placing in me.

On a personal note, I want to thank a dear friend, a Masonic brother and fellow Noble for his encouragement

and for him believing in me, and therefore having myself become a Mason and a Shriner.

It all started 16 years ago over a cup of coffee. I would like to Thank You for giving me this great honor and also

Thank You for being a true friend, and mentor. This friend I speak of is Ron Williams.

Until next time!

While typing on my computer the other day I started to think about the first computer that I owned. It was a #2 pencil and a piece of paper, and a slide ruler. I know I’m old but most of you reading this had

the same computer. If you had a TV it was black & white, and you had to get up to change the channel or turn the volume up and down.

We’ve all heard members of older generations (wait I’m the older generation) start a story with, “Back in my day,” which is then followed by a seemingly endless list of ways things have changed in the intervening years. However, tales of walking 10 miles in the snow up hill to school may be a little stale, life has changed in some seriously significant ways over the last half-century.

Because most of us love vehicles, we have over the years seen some of the biggest changes in the last 50 years. Navigation systems, satellite radio, backup cameras, keys that stay in your pocket, and soon self-driving. You will be able to sleep while you drive from Minnesota to Florida. So, let’s look at some of the Zagalas member’s first cars.

Joe: a 1940 Chevy business coupe.. I traded a customer in our gas station my very nice motorized go cart for.. It was in good shape but met its end ... when on an Easter Sunday morning it was victim of a hit & run.. had split manifold and duals.. and gas heater.. primer gray.. Original MSRP $712.00 Now $42,995.00

Larry: 1979 Chevy Monza. 350 auto. That was a sleeper and was very fast. It was a Camaro killer $3850.00 now $40,000.00

Bob: 1972 Chevelle 350 automatic orange with black hardtop $2,923.00 now $33,000.00

Paul: a 1957 Pontiac Chieftain baby blue with a black top and cruiser skirts. $ 2,463.00 now $20,000.00 My car that I met Cathi with was a 1960 Ford T-Bird, 356 engine, bucket seats, Acapulco Silver Blue. Now “priceless:”

Art: My first was a homemade go-cart (circa 1964). $1.00 now free, my 1st legal driver was a 59 Plymouth Belvedere, 318 three on the tree with overdrive - it would do 95 in second gear! My favorite from the early days was of course the 1969 Plymouth GTX, 440 magnum with air grabber induction package, 4 speed, 4:10 gears. B5 blue with a black vinyl top and interior..

Bought it in 1970 for $2,400.00. NADA today is $90k…

Bruce: 1966 GMC 1/2 pickup 305 V6 ,3 speed on the tree. Got it at age 15. $2,066.00 now $37,000.00

Rahn: 1963 Ford Galaxy 500 $3,033.00 now $33,800.00

Dick: My first car was a 1949 ford. $1,595.00 Now $18,700.00

Darrel: 49 or ‘50 Mercury, it kind of looked like an upside down bathtub. This got me through a few years of high school; $1,875.00 $66,000.00

We should have all kept our first car LOL. For fun next time you are dealing on a new car, ask the salesperson how the new fuel injection works with the latest carburetor, or just before you sign the papers ask for a bench seat, or demand a cigarette lighter. Life can be fun

To the World you may be just one person, but to a child you may be the World.

Osman Membership – Together We Can – Continued!

Last month we welcomed you in the New Year of 2019 and introduced our membership logo which states, “Together We Can.” We then recapped 2018 prospect events and declared, “Let us continue this effort in 2019!” An important part of that effort is to continue to provide events for Mason and Shriner prospects.

Our prospect events are envisioned as a means of unity – uniting Masons and Shriners, primarily consisting of Boomers (54-72 years old) and the Silent Generation (73-90 years old), with un-initiated Millennials (21-37 years old) and

Gen X (38-53 years old). We as members of the Boomer and Silent Generations, feel we can provide activities and events to attract Millennials and Gen X to become Masons and Shriners. This is the continued premise for prospect events and it seems to be working.

During a recent membership team meeting, we discussed the results of 2018 prospect activities. Since we are serious about continuing future prospect events, we needed to focus on strengths as well as weaknesses of the 2018 events. This scrutiny resulted in identifying suggestions for improvement of future prospect events and adjustments have already been made to our operational plans.

Because of the overall positive outcome of 2018 prospect events, it was then decided that three additional prospect events for a total of seven should be held in 2019. Anders Haugen (then Chief Rabban and now the Potentate of Osman Shriners), was deeply involved in the discussions and planning and offered his wholehearted personal support as well as that of the Osman Divan. As a result, the details of these events are now being developed and the dates, location, venue and coordinators are listed as follows:

Month/ Date Location Venue Coordinator (s)

Tue., March 5 Woodbury 3rd Act Craft Brewery Jerry Johnson & Greg Sailer

Wed., April 17 Alexandria Copper Trail Brewing Mke Pray

Sat., May 18 Waite Park Crooked Pint Ale House Mike Yankovec

Sat., June 8 Austin Torge’s Live Sports Pub & Grill Matthew Woodworth, Brad Stout, Neil Hanson

Sat., Sept. 14 Mankato Buffalo Wings & Rings Steve Igou & Eric Mundt

Sat., Oct. 12 Rochester Kinney Creek Brewery Brad Phelps

Sat., Nov. 2 Winona Island City Brewing Company Scott Banicki

As you can see, these events have been set up throughout Osmanland. Please put these events on your calendar and plan on attending as many as you can. The local coordinators for each of the events will be working diligently to make it a success and they all need our help and support. Please help identify blue lodge and Osman Shriner candidates and then bring them to the events. The membership team will provide information to these prospects and answer their questions. If you can help in some way in your location, contact the coordinator and ask, “What can I do to help you?” or offer your specific talent.

Third Act Craft Brewery will be donating $1.00 to the

Womens General Auxiliary to Shriners Hospitals

for Children Twin Cities (WGA 4 Kids) for each pint

purchased during the event.

As the table shows, we’ll start out in March, 2019 in the East Metro area at Third Act Craft Brewery in Woodbury (3rdactbrew.com). This is a brand new brewery which just began operation in November, 2018. They have a tasty inventory of eight crafted brews on tap, fresh brewed root beer, homemade craft pop and serve artisanal Neapolitan pizzas and freshly baked pretzels - the biggest pretzels you will ever see! Third Act Craft Brewery will be donating $1.00 to the Womens General Auxiliary to Shriners Hospitals for Children Twin Cities (WGA 4 Kids) for each pint purchased during the event. This generous act should be reason enough to attend this event. We need to support them for this generous contribution and state our thanks up front! We also need to show the public that when we do things, we always have our Shriner Hospital kids in mind! Subsequent events throughout 2019 will require your participation and support to meet our Osman Shriner membership goal. Lift one up for a Shriner!

Our goal again for 2019 is attaining the gold level of membership achievement. Let’s start out the year by recruiting candidates for Masonic initiation. Later in the year, we can then bring them into Osman Shriners through one of our Ceremonials. For those that are Master Masons, the next event to create Osman Shriners is the St. Patrick’s Day Ceremonial which will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019. If you know of a Masonic brother who ought to be a Shriner, please obtain a signature on an Osman petition and then mail it to Doreen Lynch with the initiation fee. Equally important, if you know a good man that would be a better man as a Mason give him a petition so he can start his journey towards being a Master Mason. It is a long way to meet our membership goal of Gold at this point, but the year has just begun and Together We Can!

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

The Osman Womens Auxiliary wants to congratulate our newly elected Potentate, Anders Haugen and his Lady Adriana. We wish you a great year, and we are looking forward to working with you throughout 2019. The Osman Womens Auxiliary had the privilege of running the coat checks for both the New Year’s Brunch and the Potentate’s Reception. Thank you, Illustrious Sir Anders, for allowing us to do the coat check at your reception and thank you to everyone who donated “tip money” to the Auxiliary.

This is one more way that we are able to raise money to help provide wheelchairs for the children at Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities. Also thank you to the Auxiliary Members who manned the coat checks: Kathy Flicek, Diane Johnson, Marjorie Park, Mary Jo Vokal, Linda Johnson, Kay Skoog and Tonya West-Gray. You did a great job!

I would like to extend a special thank you to the members of the Rochester Area Shrine Club for all the toys you collected at your Holiday Party toy drive. We really appreciate the wonderful toys. There were toys for every age and both boys and girls. They were great! A very special thank you to Ron and Pari Pew. Once again, Ron made several beautifully hand-crafted wooden rolling pins and bowls to raffle at the Rochester Holiday party. All of the items were gorgeous, and everyone wanted to win one of his handmade items. Ron sold $900 in raffle tickets at the Rochester Holiday party, and he once again donated all of the raffle money to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. Thank you Ron and Pari, you are amazing!! We so appreciate your generosity, and the generosity of everyone who bought the raffle tickets!

Thank you also to the Albert Lea Shrine Club for the many, many toys they collected at their Holiday Party. The handmade dolls, with the many doll outfits and the buntings are very special. Again, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Also, thank you to Linda Kirsch for all of the beautiful caps and head bands that she made and donated for

the children at Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities.

We will begin our 2019 schedule of events in March. Back by popular demand is the Auxiliary sponsored BUNCO PARTY on Friday, March 21, 2019, at the Lost Spur/Osman Event Center. Come and enjoy Chef Mike’s delicious Taco Bar prior to playing BUNCO. Bring your neighbors, friends and family. Please mark your calendar now; so, you can join us for an evening of fun at the BUNCO Party.

On April 26, we will again have the Osman Shrine/Osman Womens Auxiliary Wine and Craft Beer Tasting at the Lost Spur/Osman Event Center.

Rose West with the toys collected from the Rochester Area Shrine Club

This is a great event with delicious hors d’oeuvres, a large variety of wines and beers to taste and a fabulous raffle. We had a large attendance at this event last year, and we are expecting an even larger attendance this year as many people are asking when it will be. Come join the fun, everyone is welcome!

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman and thank you for all of your continued support

to the Auxiliary. Your donations are making a difference in the lives of the children at Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities. We appreciate everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
