Manitoba Magazines
The Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association is a valued partner of the Manitoba Legislative Library. Each month, every magazine published in the province is submitted to the Manitoba Legislative Library for permanent preservation and to be enjoyed by researchers and visitors to our library. Prominent, nationally circulated magazines such as Canada’s History, Kayak, Ducks Unlimited’s Conservator and Conservationniste, Convenience & Carwash Canada, and Contemporary Verse 2 can be found on display at the Legislative Library’s 200 Vaughan Street location. Older issues of these and many other Manitoba magazines are also available, including Manitoba Teacher, North Roots, Manitoba Farmer’s Voice, Herizons, and Manitoba History. Manitoba magazines do not circulate out of the library, in order to preserve these and other Manitoba publications for the enjoyment and knowledge of generations of Manitobans.

Librarian’s Picks
Spin : how politics has the power to turn marketing on its head / Clive Veroni. Toronto : House of Anansi Press, 2014. 320 pages. HF 5415.123 Ver
From Publishers Weekly Reviews:
[In] this exceptionally well-written and entertaining book, [Veroni] explains how political strategists are reshaping public opinion through the use of big data, sophisticated computer modelling and smart manipulation of social media. Framing the right question, wedge politics, inspirational team building and scenario planning are techniques that have been used extensively to influence voters. Following in political operatives' footsteps, marketers are now adopting similar strategies to influence consumers' choices and strengthen their brands. Social media, open branding, individualized marketing and crowd-sourcing are helping companies develop products, deliver messages to consumers. The author also provides a compelling argument for reinventing marketing teams to exploit events and expose brands to captive audiences in innovative ways. Techniques featured in the book are supported by well-known business examples, political events and marketing stories that are highly relevant, powerful and entertaining, effectively reinforcing how companies and political strategists influence voters and consumers alike. Delightfully captivating and riveting, this is a must-read for marketers and political strategists and is highly recommended for all consumers.
Macdonald at 200 : new reflections and legacies / edited by Patrice Dutil and Roger Hall. Toronto : Dundurn Press, 2014. 470 pages. FC 521 .M3 Mac
From the publisher:
Macdonald at 200 presents fifteen fresh interpretations of Canada's founding Prime Minister, published for the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth in 1815. Well researched and crisply written by recognized scholars and specialists, the collection throws new light on Macdonald's formative role in shaping government, promoting women's rights, managing the nascent economy, supervising westward expansion, overseeing relations with Native peoples, and dealing with Fenian terrorism. A special section deals with how Macdonald has (or has not) been remembered by
historians as well as the general public. The book concludes with an afterword by prominent Macdonald biographer Richard Gwyn. Macdonald emerges as a man of full dimensions — an historical figure that is surprisingly relevant to our own times.
MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE LIBRARY SNT February 2015 3 Disengaged? : fixed date, democracy, and understanding the 2011 Manitoba
election / [edited by] Andrea D. Rounce and Jared J. Wesley. Regina : University of Regina Press, 2014. viii, 317 pages. JL 298 Dis
From the publisher:
Elections are a critical componenet of democracy, yet civic engagement has reached a post-war low in Manitoba. Barely half of all eligible voters showed up to vote in the last three provincial elections. Surveys show that many of these non-voters feel alienated from the political process, or have other priorities on Election Day. Of particular interest is the rate of turnout among youth, aboriginals, and immigrants.
This important Canadian case study addresses the democratic deficit from a wide range of perspectives, providing scholars, observers, and citizens with an accessible account of politics and elections in Manitoba, while illuminating an issue that resonates across the country.
City beautiful : how architecture shaped Winnipeg's DNA / by Randy Turner. Winnipeg : Winnipeg Free Press, 2014. 134 pages. NA 747 .W5 Tur
From the publisher:
Buildings are their best as an expression of culture. They’re an expression of us as a people, as a community, as a collective. They’re a reflection of our time.
Overlooking Saskatchewan : minding the gap / edited by Randal Rogers + Christine Ramsay. Regina : University of Regina Press, 2014. xxxii, 349 pages. FC 3511 Ove
From the publisher:
When Canadians think of Saskatchewan—if they think of it at all—they think "flat and boring," a place to drive through or fly over, a gap between the bigger cities to the east and west.
Yet thanks to its damn-the-critics spirit, Saskatchewan is the birthplace of socialism, Medicare, and public funding for the arts—all essential to the national identity. It is impossible to imagine Canada without these things and equally as impossible to imagine another part of the country filling Saskatchewan’s singular role in the development of the nation.
But within the country’s narrative, Saskatchewan remains on the margins. In Overlooking Saskatchewan, twenty writers articulate the challenges and the power of this identity, revealing how the citizens of Saskatchewan continue to lead the way in the creation of culture and the nation’s sense of self.
