Bushfire Procedures Monbulk College is listed on the Bushfire at Risk Register (BARR) which means that on a CODE RED day the college will be closed and the buses will not run. The Department of Education and Training has identified a number of schools which they have labelled as upper cohort schools. These schools are seen as at a higher risk due to their location out of town, proximity to forested areas and which have a high bushfire attack risk rating. Monbulk College is one of the upper cohort schools and so in 2018 will also pre- emptively close when the local Monbulk area has an Extreme Fire Danger Rating. When the college is closed NO teachers, students, parents, volunteers or contractors are allowed to be on site. Last week I sent out the required test communication and over 80% of families responded by the 1.30 timeframe and well over 90% by the end of the day. If you did not receive either an email or an SMS message could you please contact the General Office and check that our details are accurate. Should the college be pre-emptively closed in 2018 you will receive a message from the college (both email and SMS) to which you must respond as well as it being posted on both the college’s website and the department’s website. If this does not occur then the college is open. As a BARR school we also run a number of drills throughout the year so all students are aware of our emergency procedures. The college has already run the Year 7 students through all our procedures and completed the first practice drill for the college. Study Hall Study Hall will commence tonight and in 2018 will run on Tuesday afternoons in the FLC from 3.15 to 4.30. All students are welcome to come and use the facilities to complete classwork, undertake homework tasks, seek assistance with tasks or just simply find a quiet place to work. Principal’s Report

Welcome to 2018 The start to the year has gone smoothly and all classes are now well established and parents will be able to see their first learning tasks on Compass. You will have also noticed that our building works have finally commenced with the demolition nearing completion.

Year 7 Camp The Year 7’s and the College Captains went on camp last week and I certainly enjoyed my time with them on Thursday evening and Friday. The students were all cooperative and were clearly enjoying themselves getting to know each other. Thanks are extended to Steve Utting for his organisation and to the staff and parents who attended the camp.

Year 12 Orientation This day again went very smoothly and assisted the Year 12’s to establish their study routines and to become a cohesive and supportive group. Their new rugby tops have arrived and look very smart. Thanks are extended to Glenn Rockelmann for his organisation and oversight of the Year 12s.

Monbulk College is one of the upper cohort schools and so in 2018 will also pre-emptively close when the local Monbulk area has an Extreme Fire Danger Rating. Insurances and Vaccinations Parents are reminded that the college does not have student accident insurance or ambulance cover and that valuable personal items should not be brought to the college. The college strongly advises all families to consider taking out ambulance cover. If you wish to take out student accident insurance there are a number of companies who offer this type of insurance. Carpark Safety

As a result of the current building works occurring at the college we have lost the use a number of car parking spaces. This has placed parking at a premium.

Families MUST NOT use the main car park as a drop off point for students and instead use the gymnasium car park accessed via gate 4.

Please only use the main car park if visiting the General Office.

Thank you for your cooperation

Host Family Wanted!

Host families are wanted to host Hiroki Yoshida from Japan. Hiroki is 20 years old and very excited about coming to Monbulk. He will be arriving at Monbulk College on the 30th April and he will be here for the remainder of the year.

Hiroki wants to improve his English skills and to understand foreign cultures and customs. At Monbulk College he will be assisting the Japanese teachers with the Japanese classes.

We are urgently seeking host families who may be able to host Hiroki at any time this year, either for a term block or even for a couple of weeks. Host families must be able to provide Hiroki with a spare room and meals. Payment of $150.00 per week will be made to host families.

If you are able to host Hiroki, please contact either Vera Magila or Fiona McNair at the College as soon as possible.
