The Best Kept Secret of the Church: Catholic Social Teaching Pope Francis has brought renewed emphasis to the concept of Biblical justice and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching derived from it. In this workshop we will explore the Biblical roots of social justice, the development of Catholic social principles, and a variety of ways in which we can become involved in alleviating the suffering of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. 2017ARCHDIOCESANANNUALCATHOLICAPPEALBEGINS“LoveYourNeighborAsYourself” Many parishioners recently received a mailing from Archbishop Cupich asking you to make a pledge to the 2017 An-

nualCatholicAppeal. As you heard from Fr. Jerry this weekend, we are once again inviting you to participate in the Appeal effort. We recognize that the 2017 Annual Appeal follows closely on the heels of our capital campaign. We humbly ask you to please respond as generously as you are able, as you have so many times in the past, since the proceeds from the Appeal are critical for the support of essential parish and Archdiocesan ministries and services. While gifts to the capital campaign provide for St. Mary’s long-term future, the Appeal funds everyday services and ministries in our parish and from the Archdiocese. For example, Appeal funds help to support Religious Education, Lay Formation, Priest Education, and Liturgy as well as providing services that assist the poor and ight for justice. The ACA theme, “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself,” was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our parish, our Archdiocese, and throughout the world. In the campaign brochures and website (www.annualcatholicappeal.com), please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please be as generous as you can. Recognizing that we have just completed the pledge phase of the ToTeachWhoChristIs capital campaign, the Arch-diocese is making a special one-time reduction to our Annual Appeal goal this year, to $38,027. When St. Mary reach-es this goal in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. In 2016, this “rebate” provided St. Mary with more than $124,000 to help our parish support our many ministries and activities. If you did not receive an envelope in the mail, pledge cards will be available in the pews and from the parish of ice beginning next weekend, February 18-19. We are deeply grateful for your generous support and commitment. The Contemporary Choir Needs You! Have you been at a Mass with Music led by the Contemporary Choir lately? There is a renewed energy and excitement since the Spirit and Song books have been added to the pews. We sing at the 11:30 Mass on the 2nd Sunday and at the 5pm Saturday Mass the 3rd weekend of each month, September to May. Our Mass times do change during the summer months. We also led the Music at the 3pm Christmas Eve Mass and we will be singing on Easter Sunday at the 10:00am Mass. We always welcome new vocal members and instrumentalists. We enjoy sharing our gifts with each other and the Parish Community. We like to have fun while helping to share joy through music. Come and be a part of our group. If you are interested, stop by after a Mass we are at, attend a rehearsal (we rehearse on Thursday evenings a couple of times a month) or email us at [email protected]

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak

Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for Us

Saturday, February 11, 2017 has been designated as the “World Day of the Sick,” and is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church which was instituted on May 13, 1992 by St. Pope John Paul II. Beginning on February 11, 1993, it is celebrated every year on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes (through whose intercession so many have been cured), and is intended to be “a special time of prayer, sharing, and of offering of one’s suffering for the greater glory of God.” St. Pope John Paul II had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease as early as 1991, an illness which was only disclosed later. It is significant that he decided to create a World Day of the Sick only one year after his diagnosis. St. Pope John II had written a great deal on the topic of suffering and believed that it is very much a sanctifying and redeeming process all Christians are called to endure, if they are to live their lives in the image of Jesus Christ. I would imagine that we all have had to suffer in our lives. Whether it’s physical, emotional or spiritual suffering, part of being human is to have to endure hardships in life that at times can be quite debilitating. I was once asked, “If suffering is part of God’s plan for us, why do we pray to be relieved of that suffering? Wouldn’t that be say-ing we don’t accept God’s plan, that we want it to go away?” My an-swer was, and as I get older and more health issues and family travails become more apparent, my answer still is; that we pray, not for God’s plan to be altered, but for the grace to courageously accept God’s plan for each of us, no matter what that plan entails. That is what true disci-pleship, that is what living our faith, “Walking the talk” is all about. In the good times to graciously accept God’s blessings, in the times of travail to accept the crosses we must bear. That’s what makes this “World Day of the Sick” so special. It highlights how the Blessed Moth-er is with us to endure the travails of life and it encourages us to not only on one day, but always pray to our merciful God for the grace to deal with our illnesses, to pray for those who are also suffering, to be courageous, and as Jesus did suffer in relative silence.

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners,

How Can We Communicate Better? Part of being in a healthy relationship is having good communication. Use the guidelines below to open up the channels of communication between you and your boyfriend/girlfriend. If you're in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, be careful using these tips. You know your relationship best. If any of these tips would put you in danger, don't try them. For Healthier Communication, Try To: Find the Right Time. If something is bothering you and you would like to have a serious conversation about it, make sure you pick the right time to talk. Don’t interrupt your boyfriend/girlfriend when they’re watching a sports game, TV show, about to go to sleep or stressed about an upcoming test. Tell your boyfriend/girlfriend you would like to talk later and find a time when you’re in the same room and not do-ing anything important. Don’t start serious conversations in public places unless you don’t feel safe.

Talk Face to Face. Avoid talking about serious matters or issues in writing. Text messages, letters and emails can be misinterpreted. Talk in person so there aren’t any unnecessary miscommunications.

Do Not Attack. Even when we mean well, we can sometimes come across as harsh because of our word choice. Using "you" can sound like you're attacking, which will make your boyfriend/girlfriend defensive and less receptive to your message. Instead, try using "I" or "we." For example, say “I feel like we haven't been as close lately” instead of “You have been distant with me.”

Be Honest. Agree to be honest. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it’s the key to a healthy relationship. Ad-mit that you aren’t always perfect and apologize when you make a mistake instead of making excuses. You will feel better and it will help strengthen your relationship.

Check Your Body Language. Make eye contact when speaking. Sit up and face your boyfriend/girlfriend. Let your boyfriend/girlfriend know you’re listening. Show them you realy care. Don’t take a phone call, text or play a video game when you’re talking. Listen and respond.

Use the 48 Hour Rule. If your boyfriend/girlfriend does something that makes you angry, you need to tell them about it. But you don’t have to do so right away. If you’re still hurt 48 hours later, say something. If not, consider forgetting about it. But remember your boyfriend/girlfriend can’t read your mind. If you don’t speak up when you’re upset, there is no way for them to apologize or change. Once you do mention your hurt feelings and your boyfriend/girlfriend sincerely apologies, let it go. Don’t bring up past issues if they're not relevant. How to Communicate if You Are Angry Stop. If you get really angry about something, stop, take a step back and breathe. Give yourself time to calm down by watching TV, talking to a friend, playing a video game, taking a walk, listening to some music or whatever helps you relax. Taking a break can keep the situation from getting worse.

Think. After you’re no longer upset, think about the situation and why you got so angry. Was it how your boyfriend/girlfriend spoke or something they did? Figure out the real problem then think about how to explain your feelings.

Talk. Finally, talk to your boyfriend/girlfriend and when you do, follow the tips above.

Listen. After you tell your boyfriend/girlfriend how you feel, remember to stop talking and listen to what they have to say. You both deserve the opportunity to express how you feel in a safe and healthy environ-ment.

Communicating isn’t always easy. At first, some of these tips may feel unnatural or awkward, but they will help you communicate better and build a healthy relationship.

Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner each year. This article, printed with permission from Loveisrespect.org, is part of a four-part series that will be featured in the bulletin during the month of February, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Please keep all young adults in your prayers. For more information about the Domestic Violence Ministry at St. Mary please contact Diane Mulroe in the parish office at [email protected]

Everyone deserves a safe and healthy relationship. Remember, love has many definitions, but abuse isn’t one of them. F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the proph-ets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to

you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law…I tell you, un-less your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Phari-sees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven…It is better for

you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna...” I have often shared one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes: “Most people are bothered by those Scripture passages which they cannot understand. But for me, the passages in Scripture which trou-ble me most are those which I do understand.” Today’s Gospel is one of those passages that I do understand and, frankly, these words of Jesus scare the heck out of me. And, I think, they should scare you too. Too often we approach our faith from a perspective of “What’s the least I have to do to get by?” We convert religion into the keeping of rules and pious practices rather than having religion con-vert our hearts and lives. We think we can fool and appease God by tossing him occasional snippets of ritual action and lip service…and that we will be rewarded with a gold medal for doing so! We convince ourselves that results don’t matter, that any effort will do, and that God will readily ignore our lack of depth and commitment. We should not be deluded about our deserving any reward or pat on the back from God. God is indeed a God of Love and Mer-cy…but he is also a God of Expectations. We live in an age that de-nies the existence of universal transcendent Truth, of right and wrong, of sin and personal responsibility/accountability. In today’s Gospel Jesus not only doesn’t abolish the Law of Moses, he ups the ante! Jesus ratchets up the requirements to include more stringent criteria: Our inner life must be pure. Our entire being must be oriented around

making God and His Kingdom the focal point of our existence. There will be a judgment rendered. Today’s Gospel challenges us to ask ourselves where we REALLY stand in our relationship with God. Is there some piece of our thoughts, words or actions that we need to excise? Do we simply go through the motions and give superficial attention to our Heavenly Father? Do we just maintain good appearances and observe the nec-essary rituals and regulations of our religion? Do our politics, finances and lifestyles match the values of the Gospel? Do we hold virulent prejudices, animosity or grudges while at the same time feeling good about ourselves because we go to Mass every Sunday? Or are we in intimate love with Father, Son and Spirit, a relationship which drives every aspect of our lives? Most of us (myself included) hold something back from our commitment to Christ and his Gospel. We cut corners and compromise on the demands. We convince ourselves that we’re doing “good enough” and are satisfied with that. We excuse away our failings as “not that bad.” We may externally keep the letter of the law but our hearts are far away from the spirit which the law is meant to express. When I take an honest look in the proverbial spiritual mirror, I am only too aware of the many times when my thoughts and actions fall short of the standard of authentic love and total commitment Jesus demands in today’s Gospel reading. Christ’s words should scare us and rouse us from our delu-sional self-satisfaction and complacency. Snapped to attention by the clear statement of God’s expectations in today’s Gospel, may you and I embrace more deeply and completely the authentic life required by the Kingdom of God. May our thoughts, words, and actions clearly show that there is nothing minimalist or legalistic when it comes to our relationship with God. Thank you for your time and prayers!

Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace,

as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless the current members of our armed forces and all veterans.

Give them courage, hope and strength.

May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing. Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever.

Amen

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri

Do you understand the meaning behind the parts of the Mass? We know the

gestures and responses well, but would you like a richer, more fruitful worship experience?

In his five week video based study, A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri explores the roots of the words and gestures we experience at

Mass, and explains their profound significance. In this study you will come to know and understand the Mass like never before. It is a wonderful opportunity to find a renewed excitement for our Catholic liturgy as we head into Lent and

the Easter season!

Each session includes lively group discussion followed by a video presentation to help unlock the lesson each week. Sessions will be offered 3 times per week

so that participants can choose the time that best fits their schedule. Cost to register is $19.95 per person and includes materials for all 5 sessions.

Register online at www.stmaryfc.org or return this form with payment to par-ish office or collection basket. Payment can be made by credit card or check payable to St. Mary. Participants are welcome to attend any session but

please indicate your preferred time for planning purposes.

Session Dates All sessions will begin in the Meeting Rooms at

the St. Mary Parish Center.
