THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 A king tortured a Jewish family, and tried to make them violate the laws. They all refused to give in and violate the laws. All of the family members told the king they would rather die at his hands than surrender their hope of being resurrected by God.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5 Paul prays that the Thessalonians will be strengthened by God. He also asks them to pray that God's word will continue to spread, despite the persecution of Christians that was occurring at that time.

Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 Jesus encountered some Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection. Jesus refuted them by quoting Moses, who called the Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jesus then said. "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for him."

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“May the Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.”

How many greeting cards we have sent, how many more have we received. All have some kind of a wish, a message of comfort and sorrow when sickness or death occurs, or congratulations on a birth, birthday or graduation. The card means a lot, and sometimes the message is overlooked. As always we say ‘it’s the thought that counts.’

Paul’s message to his friends contains so much, we might glide past it and miss the point of the sacred scriptures. He reminds us we are loved by God, our Father, and Jesus our Brother, who offer us encouragement and hope through grace, God’s very life. The fruit of that love is found in the gift of encouragement and the strength that comes from His grace, reflected in the good we say and do.

Wow!

Prayer Before Election

Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to

better understand the issues and concerns that

confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel

compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our

community.

We ask for eyes that are free from blindness

so that we might see each other as brothers and

sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those

who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and

poverty.

We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children

unborn and those abandoned, Men and women

oppressed because of race or creed, religion or

gender.

We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing

the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your

Kingdom.

We pray for discernment so that we may choose

leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and

keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the

steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your

Kingdom of justice and peace.

We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ

and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

NOVEMBER 6

BEGINS PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS WEEK

Lord Jesus, we pray to you for the Catholic priesthood. Give us more priests, but most especially we ask you to give us holy priests.

Messengers of a truth that is all encompassing and eternal, holy priests who know how to offer this truth to the people of their own time and place.

Holy men for today, priests firmly rooted in the tradition, yet imbued with the spirit of this age. They have undertaken a mission in your name, Lord. May the reflection of your power in them always make it clear that they are your witnesses.

Grant that they may conform their lives to the paschal mystery that they celebrate each day in the Eucharist. May they sense in this mystery the anxious hunger of the world and of their own brothers and sisters for salvation. May they know, despite this hunger, how to respect the spiritual freedom of others; for it is your word which has given the world a taste for this freedom.

May they understand and speak the language of their own time. And may they be careful never to compromise, with opinions that come and go, the imperishable newness of your Gospel. May they always keep through the dark wintry night of the soul an obstinate hope for the springtime to come. And when they meet those who persecute you, may they always remember the road to Damascus and the hidden ways of your providence.
