From the Vicarage...The announcement last November of a Royalwedding, set in the splendour of WestminsterAbbey, has given the country something tolook forward to. Perhaps some of us are alsolooking forward to the weddings that wil lhappen in our own community, amongst ourown famil ies and friends this year. In thesometimes bleak days of February, anyoccasion to find something to look forward tois good and indeed it is perhaps notsurprising that St Valentine’s Day grows evermore popular, a celebration of love. Ahighl ight for me each February is a marriagepreparation day I run for those gettingmarried during the coming year. I t is also atime of year in which I often receive manyenquiries about getting married in church.

Many people think they are not el igible but infact they probably are. A couple can marry ina C of E church if you can show:

That one of you has at any time lived in theparish for a period of at least 6 months orwere baptised or confirmed in the parishconcerned or have regularly gone to normalchurch services in the parish church for aperiod of at least 6 months or that one of yourparents, at any time after you were born haslived in the parish for a period of at least 6months or has regularly gone to normalchurch services in the parish church for aperiod of at least 6 months or that one of yourparents or grandparents was married in theparish.

Even if you cannot demonstrate any of theabove connections with St Swithun’s butwould nevertheless l ike to be married here, Iwould be happy to help you explore whetherthat may sti l l be possible.

Many may ask why get married in a churchanyway, particularly nowadays when thereare so many other options? The Church ofEngland’s own website offers some thoughtson this:

•A church wedding wil l add a spiritualdimension to your marriage. The ceremonyincludes God and looks to him for help andguidance. Including God’s blessing as part ofthe ceremony is the main attraction for manycouples.

•Vows and promises. Some would say youcan only make vows this big in a church. These vows, made in public, wil l help you tostay together and grow together. God andyour church are there for you to help youkeep your vows.

•You can blend ancient tradition and modernexperience to reflect your story. Eachrelationship is unique and we seek to workwith each couple so that their wedding canbe made personal, memorable andmeaningful.

•Church buildings offer outstanding beauty.St Swithun’s certainly does offer a beautifulsetting for a wedding.

•Church buildings offer centuries of history.Imagine all the couples who have married inour church, some of whom may well be yourfamily and ancestors. Many who get marriedin St Swithun’s church are aware of being apart of this sense of continuity and history.

•For some people, a church simply seemslike the proper place to get married.Churches can be described as 'peaceful ','serene' or having an atmosphere that makesmarrying there a particularly specialexperience.

•Ongoing support. The church isn’t simplythere for the wedding day itself but we seekto be there in the months and years thatfol low. Anyone who has been in a committedrelationship has almost certainly known bothups and downs and one of the roles of thechurch is to offer support, prayer and counselwhen needed. We are also here to helpcouples celebrate; many couples value theopportunity to renew their marriage vows ona special anniversary.

I f you or a family member wishes to explorethe possibi l ity of marrying at St Swithun’s,please do not hesitate to contact me. Or ifyou are planning to marry either in Bathfordor elsewhere and would l ike to join us on 1 2February, for what is always both a fun andinformative day of marriage preparation, docall me to book a place.

Warmest greetings

Jane

Lack of seating at city centre bus stopResidents may have noted the absenceof seats at the No.1 3 bus stop inDorchester Street (opposite the busstation) the centre of town. Provision ofstreet furniture was omitted from thedesign of Southgate, but the next phaseof development around the stationprovides an opportunity to get seats andlitter bins instal led. The Parish Councilwil l be writing to B&NES. Dovers Park Loop - Drop-Off OnlyBus Stop

At the Parish Council meeting onMonday 1 7 January the Councildiscussed the instal lation of a ‘set downonly’ bus stop for residents who wereunable to manage the climb up the hil lfrom the terminus. The issue has beenongoing for two years whilst efforts havebeen made to meet points raised byobjectors to the proposed stop.

Following discussion, the Councilvoted in favour of requesting a setdown point by 7 to nil (with oneabstention).

Important Points to note once the setdown point is instal led:

1 . All First Buses will travelanticlockwise round the turningcircle.

2. The stop wil l be ‘Set Down’ only.Drivers wil l not pick up passengers.

3. There wil l be a raised kerb set intothe green at the top of the turning circle.

4. There wil l be a pole with a ‘set downonly’ flag.

5. The stop wil l be registered as such

Page 7: Feb 2011 The Bathford Bulletin

on the national register.

6. There wil l be no bus shelter and nodouble yellow lines.

7. There wil l be no yellow bus box aslong as residents park considerately.

8. Faresaver wil l be notified of thechanges listed above.

Following this, the Council discussed theissue of cost of the instal lation. B&NESwould not instal l the set down point inthis financial year and ‘probably not inthe next’ due to budget constraints. Theestimated cost of the instal lation isapprox. £1 500.

In order to make this facil ity available asswiftly as possible for those who need it,the Parish Council voted unanimouslyin favour of funding the instal lation fromreserves. B&NES road traffic engineersare currently drawing up plans for theinstal lation of the set down point.

The outcome of this long and detailedprocess is that the Parish Councilfeels that it has done all it can to meetconcerns of residents who raisedobjections whilst also trying to meetthe needs of those who are less ablein the community.

Can you help Bathford Link?

Bathford Link has been providingtransport and other services in Bathfordfor some 1 5 years. This enables thoseresidents, who have problems related tohealth or age, to attend medical orsimilar appointments which they wouldnot otherwise be able to do.

I t functions thanks to the devotion of aloyal group of volunteers who administeror drive for the organisation. Weourselves are an ageing group. Unlesswe can continue to find new volunteerswe wil l not be able to continue our work. Can you find a l ittle spare time to join usin providing this service which is very

rewarding and greatly appreciated by ourcl ients?

We have immediate need of anadditional co-ordinator to work as one ofa group of three, providing the essentiall ink between client and driver. Currentlythe co-ordinators hold the Link telephonefor one month in three but we are quitewil l ing to consider varying our system tosuit those concerned. We are also tryingto find helpers who could act as reserveco-ordinators during holidays or i l lness. The Link co-ordinator telephone is amobile one with an answerphoneservice, so the holder does not have tobe at home all the time that he or she ison duty.

Extra drivers are always welcome.Normally drivers tel l us when they can beavailable so that co-ordinators know thebest times to get hold of them. This doesrequire some degree of commitment. Amileage allowance is payable.

Final ly, later this year, our treasurer wil lretire and we are looking for someone totake on this role. I t is not a particularlydifficult task. Incoming donations aredelivered to the treasurer who banks themoney, keeps the records and pays anybil ls, etc.

I f you can help with any of theseactivities, do please get in touch with meon 8591 32 and I wil l arrange to meet youto provide further detai ls.
