Church to run the race to win. Hetravelled extensively in what is nowGreece and would have been famil iarwith the Olympics of his day and otherancient games. Many major cities of histime had sports coliseums, hippodromesfor horse racing, and local athletes andteams. A fruitful Christian l ife doesn’t justhappen, says Paul, but requiresdiscipl ine, training and a clear sense ofpurpose. What he doesn’t specify iswhether he has in mind a marathon or asprint. Life l ived at the pace of a sprintcan produce short term results and besustained for a while, but risks burn-out.So as a metaphor for ‘l ife’ the marathonperhaps seems more apt. Ultimatelythough, even in a marathon, success orfai lure comes down to the performanceof the individual athlete on the day. Formost of us, in that tension betweenindividual and collective effort, fulfi lment, fruit and purpose in large part derivesfrom life as part of community whetherthat be family, friends, neighbours, workcolleagues or some other network webelong to. And even athletes, thoughthey may be running the actual race‘alone’, depend on an extensive supportbase of coaches and so on. So thankgoodness for the passion, adrenalineand exhaustion that is part of Olympicsport – and that’s just for the spectators!

From the Vicarage... .

Many of us wil l currently be absorbed bythe London Olympics. In a day and ageof often complicated, busy l ives andrelentless change, the fundamentalqualities of the games – the emotion andexhilaration we experience seeingathletes competing their strength, ski l land endurance against others, hasremained largely unchanged forthousands of years. Many of us wil l havehighl ights from previous Olympics whichhave burned themselves into ourmemories. My favourite was the Moscow1 980 Olympic games in which two of thegreatest British middle distance runners -Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe - werecompeting in the final of the 1 500m.Ovett had already won the 800m final ina race that Coe had described as "theworst tactical race of my life". So in the1 500m the pressure on Coe wasimmense and, on the final bend, he tookthe lead, accelerated away and couldn’tbe caught. Coe is, of course, now Chairof the London Organising Committee forthe games.

The incredible strength, agi l ity andelegance of modern athletics is a productof years of demanding hours of training, mental ly and physical ly, day in, day out.But they’re also a reflection of character;athletes often having to dig very deepinto emotional reserves. And thenultimately al l of this preparationculminates in one final race. Subliminal lyperhaps, the Olympics speak to us thatanything of real value in l ife whether, forinstance, it be maintaining strongrelationships, bringing up children, working to enrich communities ormaintaining a job and career, requiressustained effort and character.

Which is why perhaps the apostle Pauldraws on the analogy of the athlete, encouraging Christians in the early

An SOS from the Bathford FlowerShow

We all know the weather this year hasbeen atrocious and continuous rain, poorl ight, lack of sun and warmth have madethe gardener’s task a very difficult andfrustrating one! We are being told bymany of our regular exhibitors in the fruit, flower and vegetable classes that thefruits of their labours have notmaterial ised and fear they wil l havenothing to put into the show. Last yearwe had a record number of 673 entries, just over half of which came from theseclasses which are under threat, so I amappealing to the very many talentedcooks, crafts people, artists andphotographers in the hope that they canmake up the shortfal l . I f you have afriend or relative with any of these skil lsdo please encourage them to enter sothat we may all enjoy and admire theirtalents.

We had an excellent response from thechildren’s classes last year and now wehave separated the classes into two agegroups (3-7 and 8-1 4 on show day). Wehope this wil l encourage even morechildren to take part. The newheadmaster, Matt Stone, wil l bepresenting the trophies so I expect hewil l be both delighted and surprised bywhat is usually the imaginative and highstandard of entries in the children’sclasses.

Shedules wil l be available from BathfordCommunity Shop, Steve Marriot, TheCrown and any committee member fromthe Wednesday 1 August, so when youpick up your copy take one for a friend.

I look forward to seeing you at the show.

Bathford Kwik Cricket Festival

The sun eventual ly shone on BathfordCricket Club when they staged theirannual family Kwik Cricket Festival onSunday 1 July at the playing fields. Eightteams each comprising six playersranging in age from 6 to over 60 eagerlycontested the event whilst being fuel ledby the odd hot dog or burger! OnEuropean football final day each teamrepresented one of the competitionteams. All the matches provided muchentertainment not least the final in which, rather fittingly, Spain were playing I taly! The match ended in a tie when Spainmanaged to force a boundary off the finalbal l . I t was very encouraging to see somany youngsters striking the ball to al lcorners of the ground and bowling withgreat accuracy but more importantlythoroughly enjoying the occasion. Thefuture of Bathford cricket is hopeful ly ingood hands. The event was organisedas one of many taking place to raisefunds for the club's new pavil ion whichwil l hopeful ly begin construction nextyear. A total of £21 0 was raised on theday. A number of future fund raisingevents have been organised the nextbeing a race evening on Friday 1 0August from 8:00pm at Avonvale RugbyClub. Please come along and enjoy agreat evening of racing entertainmenttogether with a burger and a pint!
