“WHY blog when you can blab?” the Angove Street Conversation
Station will ask at this year’s Angove Street Festival. It’s about rediscovering the vanishing art of face to face communication.“A bit of respite from touch phone zombies and an opportunity to make connections in your neighbourhood,” organisers say.Tone, facial expression and body language are all part of the fun of actually talking in person, whether to someone you know, or a new friend discovered at the station.Face-to-face and hands-on is what this year’s swag of very interactive art and photographic exhibitions are about, where remote viewings are the last thing organisers want.Last in Perth is an opportunity to explore your inner artist—using everyday domestic furniture such as chairs, tables and shelves. “Adults and children alike will be encouraged to make their mark…turning an odd assortment of household furniture into a collaborative art installation as the day progresses,” the program says. The Future Shelter Art Laneway invites visitors to colour, cut and paste a giant mural–or draw a miniature masterpiece and turn it into a badge to take away.Local photographer and graphic designer Miles Noel will create a mural in Castrol Lane during the day.Using stories and old photos from locals he’ll piece together fragments of Angove’s history with a series of windows into the early 1900s. ONCE an undiscovered strip of funky shops, North Perth’s Angove Street has
been “discovered” in recent years—thanks in part to the Angove Street Festival. An eclectic mix of upmarket boutiques, designer shops and cafes and the newly refurbished Rosemount Hotel make Angove a vibrant hub.“[The street] has seen growth and investment…it’s become a really nice area,” festival organiser Stephen Catania says.Vincent council beautifying the street and planting trees had aided the revitalisation, the son of former mayor Nick added.Formerly known as the Cappuccino Festival, numbers doubled last year for the rebadged Angove Street Festival, with the enthusiastic input of local businesses and residents via the North Perth Business Association.“We got 20,000 last year,” Mr Catania said. It’s so successful he’s a tad worried about numbers this year, saying the street “couldn’t really take much more”.But that hasn’t stopped the committee putting together a stella day of entertainment, funky, vibrant stalls, interactive exhibitions and a smorgasbord of food from the four corners of the globe, from paella to burritos, Argentinean and Moroccan dishes to Singaporean noodles. There’ll be tastings and cooking demos and celebrity butcher Vince Gareffa will talk beef, and lamb, and pork.Roving entertainment from Chinese water dancers to morris men and circus performers and a host of buskers will keep the beat on the street, while a host of musicians will perform on the two stages.Angove Street Festival, Sunday April 1, 10am to 4pm.

NCE an undiscovered
THERE’S a swag of performers at this year’s Angove Street Festival, including some that invoke the spirit of that ultimate party girl,
Mary Poppins.Karin Page, lead singer for Perth band Spoonful of Sugar, is backed by a kick-arse band that gets the toes tapping, whether over chimney pots or pavements. There’s also indi folk/pop songbird Elk Bell, whose album Superfragilistic brought her plenty of acclaim when it featured on national radio last year and made it to the top 30 charts in a number of US stations.Simone and Girlfunkle was nominated for a swag of awards in last year’s WAMI’s including best vocalist and best bassist and the band’s self-titled
fi rst EP, released in 2010, has been getting plenty of airplay as well as regularly disappearing from the shelves of local music stores. The girls (and boys) of S&G will rock Angove Street as they bring the music to a rousing close on the main stage (3pm).Over at the Rosemount laneway stage, Jessica Morhall’s sultry indi-folk will have you hanging for more. Head around the corner as Morhall kicks off the Laneway party at noon.Or stick around for solo artist Salv De Criscito at 1.30pm.Whatever your thing get your body grooving at the Angove Street Festival, this Sunday April 1, 10am to 4pm.

NEW crisis accommodation will open on Lord Street, despite the objections of some Highgate locals.
The six-person premises, intended to cater for desperate homeless families unable to secure other accommodation, will be run by the Catholic archdiocese.
Archdiocese spokeswoman June Williams told Vincent councillors families were sleeping on the streets because existing shelters couldn’t cater for mothers with young teenage sons (shelters are typically single-sex).

THE North Perth toy library idea is a goer, and the committee is now on the lookout for members and toy donations.
In November the Voice reported new mayor Alannah MacTiernan wanted to set up a toy library in North Perth.
Ms MacTiernan had said the one in Mount Hawthorn was absolutely packed, and with increasing numbers of young families in the area she wanted to see if there was interest in a North Perth version.

STIRLING deputy mayor David Michael has put his hand up to run for the safe Labor seat of Balcatta at next year’s state election.
The 32-year-old hopes to succeed veteran John Kobelke who has announced his intention to retire.
“I went to primary and high school in the electorate, I’m a life member of the local cricket club, I’m entrenched in this area,” Cr Michael says.
“John Kobelke has done a tremendous job and I want to continue his good work in Balcatta.
The Tuart Hill resident joined the party at 18 and declared himself a, “true local boy, proud Labor member and I want to do the best for my electorate”.
As a teen he’d thought the Howard government “dreadful” and wanted to “get involved and help change things”.
A member of the dominant Right faction, he has worked as an adviser to Bob Kucera (2002-08) and Kate Doust (2008-12) and two weeks ago started with WA planning shadow Peter Tinley.
Cr Michael says his parents aren’t overtly political but he’d learned his great-grandfather was a Midland Junction branch president of the Communist Party in 1948.
“I’m sure there’s an ASIO fi le about him kicking around somewhere,” he laughs.
Nominations for the seat close Friday.

Park quarters. Jess Nailer is the new president of the toy library committee, having got in touch with Ms MacTiernan after reading the Voice’s article.
A stay-at-home mum with a one-year-old, she says kids get bored of toys quickly and it makes sense to keep cycling them around.
“Absolutely, mine’s only young, he’s just turned one, but already we have a box full of toys he’s never touched!”
She’s also encouraging grandparents to get involved, as a trip tox the toy library can make a nice day out instead of another trip to the toy shop.
If you want to get involved, or have toys to donate, get in touch with Ms Nailer on 0408 627 862.

Eight objections were lodged, with some fearing antisocial behaviour amidst other concerns.
The council ultimately allowed the lodging house, after Cr Dudley Maier asked for more strict conditions, including:
• noise control;• complaint managements;• a security plan;• maintenance/cleaning/refuse
plans;• parking; and,
• drug and alcohol management.
Operators have been given a two-year trial which can be revoked early in the event of breaches. Tenants must be out by 7.30am—they’ll breakfast at Tranby Support Centre—to discourage people hanging about the lodge all day.
Increasing numbers of homeless people are being seen in Perth “visiting from remote communities” according to a Vincent council report. The report says there is an “urgent need for a night shelter”. There’s currently a count underway to determine how many homeless people are in the area.

STATE league soccer teams are concerned the competition will become an “unfair playing fi eld” if Inglewood United becomes a feeder club for Perth Glory.
With plans to slash the budget for the Glory Youth Team next season, state team presidents fear Inglewood will become a surrogate club for youngsters wanting to catch the eye of Glory management.
Stirling Lions SC president Don Evans says the close relationship will disadvantage the rest of the league.
“Kids are leaving other youth programs to join Inglewood because they believe that is the path to play for the Glory in the A-League,” he told the Voice.
“It’s an unfair playing fi eld that’s been set.
“Kids will be sold on the dream that you can get into the Glory via Inglewood.”
Glory owner Tony Sage enjoys a close relationship with Inglewood United and has ploughed money into the team.
Coaching staff at Inglewood are affi liated with Perth Glory.
Plans were mooted last year for a joint venture between the Glory and Inglewood, called “Inglewood Glory”, but the plans fell through after resistance from other state

league teams.Last week the issue was
discussed at a state league club presidents meeting, with Football West CEO Peter Hugg later saying the relationship was clarifi ed as a “sponsorship agreement”.
“No regulations or rules have been broken,” he said.
“As the regulatory body we have power to act; but have no cause to act at this stage.”
Sorrento FC president Derek Harnwell and his Floreat Athena counterpart, Nicholaos Tsadilas, are unconvinced by the assurance.
“A lot of the clubs are pretty much in consensus that this will disadvantage the rest of the league,” Mr Tsadilas says.
Stirling Lions has an academy partnership with West Ham, Floreat Athena FC with Tottenham Hotspur and Balcatta SC with Burnley.
Mr Evans says they are not being hypocritical and the chances of a youngster getting
a contract with a European premier are remote, compared to the odds of an Inglewood player being signed to the Glory.
Perth Glory CEO Paul Kelly says there’s no sponsorship in place between the clubs.
“Owner Tony Sage has supported Inglewood for several years,” he said.
“What we’re talking about is what Tony has invested; as have many other individual businessmen.
“We are in discussions with Inglewood about using their ground as a training facility and social venue, that’s all.”
Inglewood president Ziggy Kramer says the other clubs are just jealous.
“They would all love to have Tony Sage as a friend,” he said.
“I have known Tony for the past fi ve years and we are thankful for all his help.
“At the end of the day, we have done nothing wrong and all the other clubs would love to have that relationship.”

FRIENDS of dead rocker Gary Cornell will send their mate off this Sunday with a big tribute gig to raise money for his daughters.
On Saturday March 17 Mr Cornell was playing with his band Pyramid of the Coyote at classic metal venue the Civic Hotel in Inglewood.
“Early in his band’s set, second song in fact, Gary suffered a suspected heart attack and collapsed on stage,” friend Tim Safe wrote to the Voice. “He did not survive. Gary was just 34 years of age. He leaves behind two young daughters, Trinity (10) and Madisan (8).”
The Civic’s donated the venue for the benefi t gig, musos have put in heaps of items for auction, and a slew of local artists have volunteered to play on the day including Baby Jane, Joy Elevation, One Armed Scissor, Jupiter Zeus and Mud Guts.
“We’re going to go in there and hopefully raise a fair chunk of change to put into a trust fund for these little girls,” organiser Jeremy Harris from DC Productions says.
The gig is on this Sunday April 1, 4pm to 10pm at the Civic, entry $20, all proceeds to the trust fund.
• Gary Cornell, lead singer of Pyramid of the Coyote, died last week on stage at the Civic and now there’s a fundraiser for his family.

VINCENT mayor Alannah MacTiernan has clashed with federal Stirling MP Michael Keenan (right) over council boundary reform.
The Liberal frontbencher had criticised the council over a proposal to gobble up parts of Stirling—one of WA’s biggest municipalities—as part of the Barnett government’s boundary reform program.
“I do not believe it would be in the best interest of Stirling residents to be moved within the boundaries of a smaller council that has less funding to provide vital services to each household,” Mr Keenan had said of the idea.
“ I t c o n c e r n s m e t h a t intentions…were not disclosed to city of Stirling and no formal announcement was made.
“ A n y c h a n g e s t o t h e boundaries could see Stirling residents pay higher rates for fewer services and programs.”
One problem for the MP is
the proposal to take in Inglewood, Menora, Mt Lawley and Coolbinia from Stirling and Maylands from Bayswater, was not a council idea.
R e s i d e n t s a t t e n d i n g a “deliberative democracy” session last month had suggested it and the council then included the idea in its report to the government.
Ms MacTiernan, a former state Labor minister, described Mr Keenan’s outburst as “very odd”.
“I can only presume he has been so busy in Canberra he has lost touch with WA,” she mused.
“We are not the decision-makers here; this perspective was sent to the minister for local
government and the review panel.
“Mr Keenan appears also not to be aware that many Mt Lawley residents and businesses would be very happy to be in a local authority that is dynamic and inner-city focused. “Stirling, they tell us, is too big or there is little shared identity across the municipality—and we contend our rates are cheaper.”
Currently the divide between Vincent and Stirling is known as “the Berlin Wall” and leads to strange things like 40kmh speed limits on one side of Walcott Street and 60kmh on the other.
S t i r l i n g m a y o r D a v i d Boothman said the proposal w e n t a g a i n s t t h e WA government’s intentions to cut the number of councils.
“What the town [sic] of Vincent is proposing—extending its boundaries—goes against the minister’s intentions,” he said.
“Shifting ratepayers from the city of Stirling to Vincent would result in affected residents facing higher rates and having access to fewer services.”

Hair salon abreast of human kindnessI WAS recently diagnosed with breast cancer. In a world where we concentrate on the bad side of life I would like to offer something uplifting.
After my surgery I was unable to wash and style my hair so I made an appointment at my local hairdresser (Hemisphere for Hair) in Mount Lawley.
The staff knew of my situation and were very kind and professional, making sure I felt comfortable and letting me lead conversations about my health.
When they had fi nished I proceeded to the counter to pay and I was told that it was their pleasure and no payment was necessary. I must say that it was so lovely to receive such kindness. Thanks to Nick, Sophie and all your staff

Missing MissyI AM thrilled to hear that Andy and the very refi ned Mr Ishlington have been reunited (Voice, March 17, 2012). In the same article you report that deae little Missy went missing in January and has yet to be located.
As an aged care worker in the
Billboards are the real culpritsOBVIOUSLY the penalties laid down to deter the petty vandalism of graffi ti tagging are quite excessive, hence the judges’ reluctance to use them (Voice, March 24, 2012).
And just think of the cost of gaoling such minor offenders for a few months or more. No doubt, their behaviour stems from the fact they were socially neglected during their early years.
Furthermore the premier and the lord mayor actually send out the wrong message with their promotion of business graffi ti in public places. I would certainly be pleased to see the premier fi ned $24 for letting our handsome Perth buses be defaced by crappy advertising panels, or the mayor fi ned for blotting the landscape with huge, mindless panels.
It must be noted that unlike the juveniles’ work, business advertisers aim to infl uence the public by stealth, which is alright if their ads remain confi ned to the media already saturated with them. In public places it tends to amount to visual pollution.
Easter bountyFAR, far better Easter gifts than bunnies and chocolate eggs are the sprouting green fronds in Mount Lawley at the Queens Crescent/Almondbury fork.
These from the trunks of the gallant cluster of pines that had their lower branches lopped during the Perth College expansion scourge.
At that time many nearby residents expected the trees never to see another Easter.
Such sentiment was frequently expressed, and angrily, here in Voice Mail.
The trees’ apparent revival can now be seen as symbolic of the college in neighbourhood damage-control mode.
For helping to save the trees, in what has become a tiny part of a global green battlefi eld, the Perth Voice deserves praise.
Thank you for the hospitality of your columns.

And the realty is whereas illegal graffi ti is easily removed in a few minutes with a new coat of paint, you would get into deep trouble with the law if you tried to remove offensive business graffi ti.

NOTICE
ANGOVE STREET residents have declared a passionate “no!” to an apartment complex proposed for their street.
Architect Aaron Sice says his seven-unit, two-storey design conforms with all the rules about height, density and setbacks.
But the neighbours aren’t happy and at this week’s Vincent council meeting a procession of objectors stood up to decry the plan.
Rosie Zappacosta has been living in the street for 45 years and sternly told councillors, “this is the second time we have said no to any units, any apartments. How hard is that to understand?!
“How ridiculous is it that you’re doing everything underhanded,” (a reference to her claim that many locals weren’t told of the development).
“It’s a small street: There’s no parking, there’s no room to move!
“Who are you to tell us we should have apartments there: One bedroom, fl y-in, fl y-out workers who don’t give a shit about the area.
“We do not want them at
CHARACTER homes are being demolished in Vincent as a side-effect of sternly-worded “clean it up” letters.
Whenever properties get so run down they become a health hazard the council sends out a letter telling the owner to “fi x it up or knock it down”.
When the owners of 181 Walcott Street got such a letter, they said “fi ne” and chose to bowl the place over.
The long-empty property had been a target of squatters and vandals and had become a safety risk.
This week the elected council was powerless to prevent the demolition of the 87-year-old home since it was their own staffers who’d issued the ultimatum.
“I think it is pretty sad, I would have preferred not to approve demolition,” Cr Dudley Maier told colleagues.
“Unfortunately because we’ve issued a Section 408 [the demand to fi x it or knock it down], I don’t think we have
• The owner chose to knock down this 1925 Walcott Street property instead of cleaning it up —which wasn’t quite what Vincent council
had in mind.

all,” she concluded to a round of applause.
The council voted to defer its decision. Cr Matt Buckels acknowledged the concerns but said it would be tough to knock back on planning grounds.
The only planning issue was the setback between the block and neighbours.
The policy says if upper levels are 1.5m from neighbours it will be automatically approved (in this case it’s 1.2m away at the closest point). Rules do allow closer setbacks if the council determines there’s “no unreasonable impact on the adjoining properties in terms of sunlight and ventilation”.
Planning staff advised the closer setback was fi ne, but mayor Alannah MacTiernan wants to look more closely at whether it does have “no unreasonable impact”.
She stressed it couldn’t be a debate over whether there should be apartment blocks.
“The laws clearly allow them,
it’s not possible or desirable for us to stand against that,” she said, noting single-person units were the fastest growing type of accommodation in the state.
She took exception to the locals’ claim such complexes attracted a bad sort, saying Cr Ros Harley lived in one and she was a fi ne upstanding citizen.
“...I object,” Cr John Carey quietly mumbled.
The anti-unit-block sentiment continued at this week’s council meeting, with locals from Anderson Street in Mount Hawthorn also protesting a six-unit, two-storey plan.
Retired landscape architect Robert Hart told the council the development was “blatant greed”.
“You say it conforms [to the neighbourhood],” the Anderson Street resident challenged council. “Show me a block of six in that area! There isn’t one!”
He said there had been no allowance for landscaping and a 50-year-old jacaranda would be removed, setting a dangerous precedent for more trees to go.
“There won’t be a tree left in Mount Hawthorn!”
The council deferred that decision too to consider the local impacts.
Angove up in arms over units
any grounds to refuse this.”Cr Warren McGrath
agreed: “I’m worried we’re inadvertently prompting an erosion of character buildings that aren’t necessarily heritage listed.”
These buildings don’t have enough heritage to be on the council’s “no demolition” register. A heritage report on 181
Walcott Street states it has “little aesthetic value,” “little historic value,” “little scientifi c value” and “little social value”.
But Cr Maier says the old houses do add to the streetscape and it’s a shame to see them go.
The council will now look at rejigging the demand letter it sends, simply telling people to fi x the place up or else.
Oops, owners demolish instead

MORLEY residents are against plans for new vehicle access at the rear of Coventry Square Markets.
The proposed entry-exit point would would force cars to turn left onto Lennon Street. Around 30 residents from neighbouring Mansell, Thorpe and Russell Streets met with Bayswater councillor Chris Cornish on Saturday morning to air their concerns.
Terry Filpo said he’d been given a guarantee by a council planner before the market opened that there would be no rear access.
“These are quiet residential streets, we don’t want trucks and cars using it as a thoroughfare,” he said.
“There is a primary school nearby and, besides, there is plenty of access at the front of the markets.”
Cr Cornish told the Voice Morley locals were opposed to the rear access plans.
“Most people are concerned about the increase in traffi c, especially as residents are already forced to walk on the road due to not having footpaths,” he said.
“The proposal would potentially result in a dangerous situation and would certainly have an impact on this quiet residential area.
• Chris Cornish with residents upset with plans for rear access for Coventry Markets.
“Another concern of residents is the very poor condition of the roads, which some blame on the heavy vehicles used during the construction of Coventry Markets.”
On March 3, market owners delivered letters to residents to gauge the level of support, claiming the rear access had been asked for. The letter was in preparation for submitting a draft plan to
the council. “Since opening we’ve been asked by a number of local residents in your area whether we can provide vehicle access and egress to Lennon Street so that they will not have to use Wellington and/or Walter Roads,” the letter stated.
The Voice contacted Coventry Square Markets for more details, but it didn’t get back to us. The markets, next to Centro Galleria, have been open since December.

HUNDREDS of healthy kittens and cats could die with the Cat Haven deciding to suspend its foster care program.
The program allowed kittens to be cared for by volunteers before reaching the minimum adoption age of eight weeks.
“We currently have around 500 foster carers who are all looking after cats or kittens in their own home,” the Cat Haven’s David Settelmaier said.
“Unfortunately our adoptions at the shelter have slowed and we are unable to bring back cats and kittens from our foster carers to be re-homed.
“Because we are at capacity we are facing the prospect of having to put to sleep hundreds of animals surrendered to us simply because we don’t have enough space to house them.”
Maylands Labor MP Lisa Baker says Cat Haven helps manage a large population of unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens and deserves support.
“I urge families who are prepared to welcome a loving cat or kitten into their homes to contact Cat Haven,” she said.
“Families will fi nd beautiful healthy and well cared for cats and kittens who are eagerly waiting for a family to love them.”
• Maylands MP Lisa Baker at Cat Haven. Photo by Matthew Dwyer
This month WA government legislation requiring all domestically owned cats to be microchipped, registered and sterilised came into effect.
Previously, lost cats were often
mistaken for strays and killed if they could not be rehomed. The Cat Haven is appealing to anyone who has thought about getting a cat or a kitten to visit its shelter on Lemnos Street in Shenton Park.

WORK has started on the Hyde Park water playground but it’s going to take longer than expected.
Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan was hoping it’d be open by the easter weekend, but the thicker-than-expected concrete is proving a tough nut to crack.
She says it’ll probably be done by May at this rate, but defi nitely, certainly be ready for next summer.
The council spent $340,722 replacing the playground after the WA health department declared the underground water tanks had been contaminated.
Meanwhile an idea for tea rooms in Hyde Park is still fl oating about.
First raised in 2009, the plan could
see high tea rooms constructed either at the west end, between the middle of the lakes, or in the converted storeroom attached to the eastern toilet block (renowned internationally as a spot for men to meet for sex).
The council decided to delay the tea rooms plan until the $4 million Hyde Park lakes restoration is completed: Work on it is expected to start later this year.

AN illegal brothel has been shut down on Brewer Street, but one of its operators claims it’ll reopen soon.
A letter recently distributed to neighbours claims the business is controlled by an “organised Asian Crime Syndicate”.
“This brothel is being operated by 2 Asian males who offer the services of at least 3 Korean prostitutes,” the letter claims.
“Uncontrolled and un-policed brothels such as this pose a very real threat to the value of life and property in the area.
“The i r sec re t ive na ture encourages sex charged males to prowl the streets along with pimps and drug dealers soliciting for business.
“The safety of you and your family is now at risk.”
The let ter concludes by encouraging people to demand that Vincent council shut it down.
T h e c o u n c i l ’ s h e a l t h department pounced midway through last week and issued the shutdown order.
The Voice dropped in on Tuesday. A gent came to the door but wouldn’t let us in.
We asked what services were offered and for how much, but the man just said “shop’s closed”.
We asked when we could come back. He said “one month” and closed the door.
However, by Wednesday afternoon the property had gone back on the market for lease.
Two nearby traders said everyone knew about the place and that it was the street’s worst-kept secret.

CR Mike Sabatino has walked out of a Bayswater city council meeting to protest a history book about the council.
Cr Sabatino told the Voice former mayor Lou Magro was at risk of being omitted from
key parts of Changes They’ve Seen, a council-funded history of Bayswater written by Cathy May. The council is putting $35,000 into the project. Cr Terry Kenyon was elected mayor by the council in October 2009 after Mr Magro lost his council seat: The pair were long-time political rivals.

A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition that shows the rugged beauty of the Kimberley is on at the Perth Town Hall from Saturday March 31 to Wednesday April 11.
The Power and Passion—Kimberley Photographic Exhibition is hosted by the Wilderness Society, Environs Kimberley and Save The Kimberley.
TWS chief Peter Robertson says it will highlight, “…the Kimberley as one of the last greatest wilderness areas left of the planet. We want the public to be aware of the importance of this area and why it needs to be protected.”
Photographer and exhibition organiser Nigel Gaunt says there are about 70 photos on display as well as a mini-documentary by Jeff Skinner about “Black Tuesday” (July 5, 2011) when Broome residents and traditional owners of James Price Point were arrested for staging a “peaceful” blockade of the road leading
to Woodside’s planned gas hub. “For the community it was such a dark day.”
Gaunt says the exhibition will take people’s breath away: “It touched me the moment I saw it… I just had to share the place—I love photographing the place as well.” It’s free entry and open daily from 10am—4pm from Saturday March 31 to Wednesday April 11 (except public holidays) at Perth Town Hall.

MOUNT LAWLEY primary school turns 100 this year.
It will kick off its centenary celebrations with an open day on Saturday between 10am and 2pm.
Principal Don Barba says he is keen to hear from ex-students who have any interesting memorabilia.
“We will be releasing 100 balloons into the sky on Saturday morning as part of the open day—it will be a great spectacle,” he said.
“We have a series of events planned throughout the year, including a musical production at the Astor theatre and the opening of our new centenary walkway.”
Famous alumni include 6PR Nightline host Graham Maybury, who attended in the 1950s.
“Mt Lawley was a wonderful
experience of ethnic diversity—way before multiculturalism was a word in common usage,” he said.
“In addition to Australians, and families from the UK, our class had Italians, Greeks, and a number of other European nationalities.
“Of course the largest single group were Jewish‚ and I remember all the bar mitzvah parties and thinking what an amazing religion this was. Having experienced bullying at other schools, I always gave a fond place in my heart to Mt Lawley primary because I had no such challenges to endure there.
“My recollection is simply of enjoying the journey with a talented and friendly group of fellow students from a variety of backgrounds that I found fascinating.”
Mt Lawley MP Michael Sutherland said the school, opened in 1912, was a living piece of local history.

“BADGES!—we don’t need no stinkin’ badges.”
Older readers will remember a swarthy Mexican spouting that famous line in the Treasure of Sierra Madre.
The 1948 fi lm starring Humphrey Bogart was unforgettable, and every time I digest refried beans I can picture that stubbly, lantern jaw.
Bogey is mumbling in my ear as we enter The Flying Taco in North Perth.
The Angove Street cafe is a small BYO and specialises in no-frills gringo cuisine.
Mexican food has been the butt of many jokes over the years (why don’t Mexicans barbecue? Because the beans slip through the grill).
But I love the peasant mush: it’s the freudian equivalent of junk food.
Ordering a meal at the Taco is a three-stage process:
• Choose a style (tacos, quesadilla, burrito)
• Choose a fi lling (steak, pork, free-range chicken,
mushrooms, sautéed potatoes and zucchini)
• Choose a salsa (pico de gallo, salsa verde, salsa chipotle)
I went for the steak burrito with pico de gallo ($16), while ‘er indoors chose the chicken quesadilla with salsa verde ($13).
The grub arrived in two unassuming plastic baskets: the kind of thing your mum puts her clothes pegs in.
The steak burrito was a huge fl oury edifi ce, wrapped in tinfoil. Its tortilla was as soft as fl eece and stuffed with marinated steak, rice, beans and cheese.
It didn’t capitulate on the fi rst bite and the steak was bonafi de, not a cheap tough rump—delicious.
‘Er indoors’ chicken quesadilla was addictive and had a yucatan-style marinade (garlic, spice and orange juice).
It had a nice seared BBQ taste and was one of the best
quesadillas I’ve sampled. The cafe music was plucked
from a David Lynch movie: Eerie 1950s ballads drenched in reverb. Think of Ricky Nelson singing Lonesome Town in a spaceship.
The surreal atmosphere was heightened by a deserted Angove Street (Sunday night) and a decrepit, 1930s-style gas station across the road.
But the Taco was buzzing and a steady stream of patrons fi led in and out, leaving with bags of refried beans.
It seemed to be popular with both teenagers and podgy middled-aged men (yours truly).
With the Rosemount Hotel located a few doors down, it is sure to corner the post-pub market.
The Flying Taco should be the model for any small cafe: Cool image, unpretentious food and friendly staff.
“Uncle Ben’s!—we don’t need no stinkin’ Uncle Ben’s.”

Worried about keeping your home safe andsecure while you’re on holidays,
at work or even in the house? The most important item in making your home safe from intruders is often overlooked when security is considered. Of course it’s your meterbox! The meterbox is like the heart of your home - without power you have no lights, no cordless phone, no elec-tricity and in some cases no security systemThieves can switch off your power at the meterbox just to see if you have an active alarm system. Don’t rely on back-up batteries - they frequently fail be-cause the use by date has been overlooked. Thieves would much rather go elsewhere than rob your home if the meterboxes are professionally locked up by the Meterbox Man. Locking your meterbox is recommended by the Police, Western Power, Alinta Gas, RAC and all insurance companies. So for peace of mind and a safer home call the Meterbox Man.

EVERY new build in Perth seems to be rendered to within an inch of its life.
Smooth grey walls that are anonymous and about as exciting as a plate of blancmange.
So it was refreshing to stumble upon a house in East Perth that has exposed brickwork and is brimming with character.
This two-storey residence is tucked away on an 1008sqm block and is within touching distance of the Swan River.
The exterior is a pleasing mix of chunky limestone, glass and wooden sills.
The stone theme is continued inside, with rough-cast walls complementing

Cvoice estateon Joelexposed wooden beams and fl ooring.
Wood and stone have been utilised to great effect in this house, creating an organic vibe.
Yet there is the odd splash of stainless steel to give the interior a contemporary twist.
Once could picture an architect or an environmentally conscious baby-boomer living here.
Upstairs, a huge tiled balcony offers elevated views of the river.
It is surrounded by mature trees and weeping willows that dapple the balcony in dark shadows.
This would be a great spot for reading the newspaper and drinking a fl agon of scrumpy.
All four bedrooms are relaxing and feature a neutral colour scheme: Perfect for catching some zzzs after a jaunt around the river.
Both bathrooms feature a pleasant mix of distressed tile and stone, with a dash of wood and glass.
The front garden has a rugged charm and reinforces how close to the river you are—you are literally a hop, skip and a jump from the water’s edge.
It would be ideal for hosting a BBQ or garden party under the stars.
This Joel Terrace property would make an ideal studio for an artisan or someone wanting a home offi ce.
The use of large windows, fl oods the property in natural light, complementing the rough-clad stone.
It is packed with personality and is in a great location.

Some say the word Easter is derived from Eostre (also known as Ostara), an ancient Anglo-Saxon Goddess. She symbolized the rebirth of the day at dawn and the rebirth of life in the spring. The arrival of spring was celebrated all over the world long before the religious meaning became associated with Easter.
As Christianity grew and spread throughout the world, it was common practice to adopt and modify existing non-Christian festivals and assimilate them into the Christian theology. Because Eostre was the goddess of spring and her symbolism dealt with renewal and rebirth, the Christian belief in the resurrection of Christ fi t well with these themes.
In every other language but English and German, the name Easter is derived from the Hebrew word pesach for ‘he passed over’, so in Spanish and Italian Easter is Pascua, in French it is Paques, in Portugese it is Pascoa, and so on. Since church proclamation in 325AD, Easter has been celebrated on the fi rst Sunday after the fi rst full moon on or after the Vernal Equinox.
This date was determined by noting that the Last Supper, as Christians came to know it, was actually a Passover seder, and Jesus’s resurrection occured on that Sunday. Passover occurs on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan on the fi rst full moon on or after the Equinox.
A further connection to Passover, is the fact that it celebrates the angel of death passing over the houses where the doors were marked with the blood of a sacrifi cial lamb. Jesus is seen by Christians as the sacrifi cial lamb whose blood was shed so that they would have everlasting life.
What is the True Meaning of Easter?

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)The real danger period, for you to be doing something rash, has passed.
Any further rushes of blood are likely to be tempered by commonsense, a moment’s refl ection and access to the overview. Good humour is always a plus. Feel it, nurture it and exercise it freely.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)Odd obstacles come in your way. They aren’t major but they are unexpected.
They are unexpected because they come from quarters that you wouldn’t have imagined to be problematic. As long as you can tickle your mind into a wise chuckle, there will be no drama.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)Logic has gone out the window. Emotion and sensuality are taking
over. Don’t even try to understand. Go with the fl ow and you will have a ball. Think about it and you’ll put a spanner in the works. Stick with wonder and mystery this week. It will be lots of fun.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)The deeper you go into the well of your being, the more magical and clear the
rest of the world becomes. Now is for plumbing introspective depths. This is how you accumulate energy to rise to greater heights. Consolidate the feeling of being at home in your own shell.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)The Sun remains in fi ery Aries and this makes you very happy.
Passion blasts blandness with rainbow colours. All that is beige in the world gets covered in a wild frenzy of unorthodox creative expression. Seek out visionary goings-on in the world around you.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)There is nothing that is going to divert you – no matter how hard anything or anyone
tries. You have your direction set, are in gear and in motion. Ultimately your intention is to get to know more of who you really are. Beware that you don’t create a new set of blinkers.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Though the Sun is in Aries, you aren’t being confronted or challenged by
the feistiness of its placement. Underneath what noise there is, life is offering a solid sense of intuitive rightness as an ally. There is a hidden harmony behind all the chaos – and you know it.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Issues of relationship are looming. This is a pleasant interlude, where
you have the freedom to potter about your own business. Soon you will be sharing your business - and all the delights and diffi culties that come with that. Watch out for fl ashes of defensiveness.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)If you don’t move with the opportunities that are being offered, it will soon feel like
you are between a rock and a hard place. This is one of those moments where life is offering a fairly clear-cut choice between motion and stagnation. Nervousness is excitement.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)Everything seems to be exactly where it should be. You are on your mountain
peak. The Moon begins the week in the watery depths of Cancer. There is plenty of tension – but it is the tension of strings on a mandolin. Life is full of multiplicity and music. Savour it.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)Options are becoming clear. You can see where the sensible place to go is. You can
see where the safe place to go is - and you can see where the truth lies. Your rebelliousness doesn’t always lead to a comfortable journey but it does always keep life interesting. What to do!
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)Life is swinging its doors open wide. The only thing that could get in your
way is if for some strange reason you start knowing too much, or getting too headstrong. Stay soft, fl uid and open - as is your wont - and life will take you by the hand and show you the way.

parents every Saturday morning at Mt Lawley’s Alexander Park tennis club as Rock ‘n’ Toddle begins.
The fun, educational and interactive gigs for kids are from the rock-pop genre and are a reprieve from the standard nursery rhyme set .

The 50-minute gigs are every Saturday at 9.30am during school terms at the refurbished tennis club in
Menora (with new café).Themes are repeated for a
few weeks to enable the kids to get familiar with the tracks and the skills set embedded in the activities. Bond with your ‘mini-moshers’, sip
lattes, chat with friends, have a dance, or send the partner/grandparents with your kids while you have a lie in!
There’s no need to book and no term fees! Under-1s are free and then its $10 per mini mosher.
Rock ‘n’ Toddle is now available for birthday parties, with live songs, interactive activities, traditional party games , pr izes and the Happy Birthday song for the birthday boy/girl.

BAYSWATER city council
has approved an increase
in student numbers for St
Columba’s primary school.
The approval—which went
against staff advice for rejection—
means the Catholic school can
now double stream and secure a
$3 million federal grant.
Staff recommended the council
block the expansion, citing the
impact of increased traf c on
surrounding streets.
At a special council meeting
held in late December, councillors
narrowly voted (5/3) that the
school be allowed to increase
student numbers from 240 to 490.
The school has agreed to
provide extra parking, including
six bays on Almondbury Street, 17
bays on Milne Street and 35 bays
on-site.Cr Marlene Robinson, who
voted against the expansion,
tabled a letter from Alison and
Geoff Ruhen of Leake Street,
opposing the expansion.
Principal Greg Martin says
the Roberts Street school spent
$12,000 on an independent report
to address traf c issues.
