by DAVID BELLSCORCHING hot demand for more inner-suburbs school places can be met by making better use of state government land throughout Vincent, says a local council candidate.
James Peart, who has a two-year-old, says places are currently so tight that small children are travelling up to 7km for kindy and 3km for primary school.
“Some parents are having to drive out to Floreat to drop one kid off at kindy and back to West Leederville to drop another off at school,” he says.
IdealHe says the School of Isolated
and Distance Education in Oxford Street (virtually opposite the Luna) would be ideal for a new school. It is centrally located, largely idle and distance-education classes run from there could be done from any education department building.
“It’s a prime location that needs a school,” says Mr Peart, known for riding around town on a bike festooned with “All-in, one-in: Vincent to Perth”.
East Perth also has plenty of unused land that could be transformed for school use and, if mergers go ahead and Vincent HQ becomes unoccupied, that could also be modifi ed.
VINCENT’S hopes of being incorporated wholly into Perth are looking shaky, with the capital city council said to be reluctant to agree to the plan.
Without PCC support for a holus bolus takeover the premier’s preferred option—to split Vincent between Perth and Stirling—is back in the frame as the most likely outcome. Perth lord mayor
Lisa Sca di and her councillors are publicly saying nothing, but the smoke signals coming out of Council House are clear—Vincent can’t count on its big neighbour’s support.
Vincent councillor Matt Buckels is furious, saying Perth must take all of Vincent if it is serious about being a real capital city.
“Earth to City of Perth... get with the program—real cities
need real people,” he says in a letter in today’s Voice, mocking that the lord mayor needs just 2500 votes to be elected. “The PCC has the electoral clout of centre management at the Dog Swamp shopping centre,” he notes, with a message to Perth electors.
“My message to Perth ratepayers: Vote for councillors who want to lead a real city and not just enjoy the gravy train.”
Cr Buckels believes “self-interest” by serving councillors might be behind the reported reluctance to embrace Vincent, with incumbent councillors fearing for their futures.
If Perth merges with Vincent and the new bigger council elects eight councillors plus the lord mayor, residents of what is now Vincent will have signifi cant voting power, and be able to
command half or more of the council. Cr Buckels describes the premier’s preferred split-plan as madness.
“Whichever genius decided Beaufort Street would benefi t from having not one, not two, but three local governments in charge, well, they deserve an ‘idiot of the year’ medal and to be put on paper clip-sorting duty for a month, if that’s not beyond them,” he says.

Stop the squeeze
“Since the Liberal government closed down Leederville primary school in the 1990s, local schools have struggled to keep up,” he says. At the time Leederville had small numbers, but Mr Peart says it was short-sighted to not realise demographics can quickly change.
Mr Peart says it’s important
children learn to walk to school—to foster independence and physical activity—and that means avoiding wherever possible the need for them to cross major roads.
“I passionately believe that it’s a real handicap for kids if they’re driven to school from a young
age,” he says. “They become so reliant on their parents.”
An ex-urban planner who doesn’t belong to any political party, Mr Peart decided to nominate after getting involved with the campaign to amalgamate Vincent with Perth rather than split between Perth and Stirling.

THERE could be a second copper on Vincent city council next month, with senior police o cer Tony Brackenreg hoping to join tra c enforcer John Pintabona.
Mr Brackenreg says he’s running because he enjoys working with the community in his policing role, and Cr Pintabona encouraged him to put his hand up.
“I was a bit reluctant to start with but he was keen for me to get on board,” he says.
“I started as a police cadet and went into uniform at 19, and did a bit of country service.
“The most rewarding job I had was when I was o cer in charge in Toodyay. I got involved with the community and made some positive diff erences.”
Mr Brackenreg, who’s not a member of any political party, lives on Stirling Street and has seen fi rst-hand how the street prostitution problem boiled over.
He says another major issue for locals in the area is city commuters clogging streets and leaving residents completely parked out.
“I see it every day: People getting out of their cars in suits and walking into the city.”
He says Alannah MacTiernan did a good job as mayor and he supports her move for a plebiscite to ask locals who they’d prefer to merge with.
MATT BUCKELS is hoping for another term at Vincent, warning voters the council’s experience pool is endangered.
With senior-most councillor Dudley Maier standing down and four-year veteran Warren McGrath calling it a day, he and Cr Josh Topelberg are the two longest-serving councillors (with each having just four years under their belts).
Their seats will be hotly contested in October, with 16 candidates vying for four spots.
Cr Buckels says with so many new faces, Vincent’s in danger of losing its experience and continuity.
“There is a risk that there’s a lot of unknown entities running.”
He’s asking voters for a second go, saying locals should keep long-termers on council if they’re happy with what’s been done recently with town centre upgrades, Hyde Park restoration, Beatty Park upgrade and movement on the big picture masterplans and planning scheme.
“We’ve cleaned out the old stagnant regime and embraced progressive change,” the urban planner says.
“I want to stay a part of that
VINCENT council’s longest serving member Dudley Maier is calling it a day.
First elected in 2005, Cr Maier says he needs a break and plans to do some bike touring with partner Sally Lake, a former councillor: “I thought I could keep working the next couple or years and then go cycle touring, or take a break now. I’m physically tired.”
Cr Maier, who turns 60 next year, says, “It was a very hard decision and I had lots of sleepless nights over it”.
He had his 150-word candidate statement ready to submit Thursday morning but ultimately decided to put it back in the drawer. “Sometimes I think I regret it, but I can’t go back.”
KATRINA MONTAUT (right) an ex-staff er for former state Labor MP John Hyde, will have a tilt at Vincent council.
Since Mr Hyde lost o ce in March, Ms Montaut says she’s enjoyed a break to “drink coff ee and be fabulous,” while accepting some events consulting work.
As an electorate staff er much of her day to day work was helping locals with issues and she believes this will translate well to an elected council role.
“One particular lady used to complain that the soles of her shoes weren’t lasting as long as they used to,” she remembers. “She was gorgeous. We provided her advice on how to follow up with consumer aff airs.”
An executive member on the Beaufort Street Network, she

co-chaired the street’s festival. A long-time ALP member she wants better east-west transport and says Vincent needs to prepare for a merger with Perth brought down from on high by the Barnett government.
“We need to maintain and strengthen our community before we go into the shadow of the high rises,” she warns.
and get things done.“I think council has done
some really good things and it would be a shame to lose that continuity.”
The outgoing Cr Maier says continuity is good, but what’s more important is having councillors who are enthusiastic, interested, and available.
“I think the most important thing is that people are connected with the community and prepared to work hard,” Cr Maier says.
He says in his eight years, “I’ve seen councillors who’ve been there for a long time who haven’t contributed a great deal”.

NORTH PERTH primary P&C president Kirstyn Johnson has nominated for Vincent’s hotly contested north ward, saying she wants to expand her work in the community.
As part of the P&C team she’s fought hard for safety improvements in the area, including getting the school crossing for Charles Street (a problem that had lingered for 20-odd years).
“I love a good letter to a politician!” Ms Johnson says. “I wrote letters to everyone I’d ever heard off . My husband joked that I got a PhD in road safety.”
With Ms Johnson at the helm the P&C also secured a school zone for View Street, getting new local MP Eleni Evangel on board to bend the Barnett government’s ear and slow speeding cars.
She also helped turn around the ailing Loftus Community Centre, which was deep in defi cit when Ms Johnson and a couple of others joined the management community.
Ms Johnson says if elected she’ll support festivals, cultural events, farmers’ markets and continued investment in play spaces, as well as pedestrian and cycling access, describing Vincent as having “a walking culture”.
Retiring councillor Dudley Maier, who’s done an eight-year stretch at Vincent and is looking forward to parole, reckons Ms Johnson’s the best person for the job: “I’ve seen her work in the community at the Loftus Community Centre and the North Perth primary school and she’s just done a fantastic job in both of those roles and never sought any recognition.”
MANUFACTURING business manager Angelo Merlacco will take on Vincent councillor John Carey in the race for mayor.
Mr Merlacco is promising an end to money being “wasted” on public art, baulking at the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on the Beaufort Street lettering, big blue head and alternative street signs.
Most of the cash comes from developers who must put aside one per cent of the cost of big projects into the arts fund, but Mr Merlacco says that money could be better spent, such as on
free parking. “I love art, don’t get me wrong, but you have to draw the line somewhere.”
Cr Carey says it’s a cheap swipe and would gut the fund’s intention. The acting mayor says the amount spent is “a very small component of our overall budget”—about 0.7 per cent—and reckons art livens up the area and attracts visitors.
While Cr Carey’s fi rst preference is to keep Vincent as it is, he’s decided the more practical route is to campaign to get the entire city taken into Perth, to avoid the community being split down the middle.
He says the all-in to Perth plan has more chance of winning WA government support.
But Mr Merlacco says he’ll oppose any change at all.
“If elected I’ll fi ght this until I’m blue in the face.”
Cr Carey is an ALP member while Mr Merlacco—who’s clashed previously with Ms MacTiernan—is not, but says he’s a Labor voter.
“John Carey is a very good councillor and a very good candidate,” Mr Merlacco says. “I just feel that I’ve got a lot to off er: I’ve got a drive and I’m results driven.”
He says she worked tirelessly to secure the crossing.
“She just didn’t give up: She persisted and understood how you have to deal with state government bureaucracy and she organised well.
“I’d be very comfortable with her representing me.”
Ms Johnson, who has three kids, says she hopes there’s a big voter turnout. A supporter of the campaign to merge a united Vincent with Perth, she’s optimistic the plebiscite asking residents about mergers will encourage more people to send in their council ballots.

A place in our communityTHANK you to Patti Ferber of the Nulsen Association for writing that beautiful letter about community inclusion for severely disabled folk through Perth City Farm (Voice Mail, September 7, 2013).
We must never forget the fi ght for inclusion and welcoming disabled citizens into our communities. A past battle fi eld was the “Tresillian” aff air some 37 years ago in 1976, when 18 severely and intellectually disabled “children” were evicted from their home in Nedlands.
“We don’t want them in our community, as their presence devalues our homes,” was one complaint from neighbours. I attended a protest meeting on July 12 which attracted some 250 family and friends, but to no avail.
A week later, on orders from premier Sir Charles Court, described as “a man with a heart of iron ore” the residents and staff were evicted, with police presence, to Forrestfi eld some 30km away. A lot of people were distressed, including the premier’s cabinet secretary, Ray Young, who immediately resigned and became a hero and an advocate for people living with a disability.
As it turned out, this eviction was a blessing in disguise, as it led to today’s community inclusion of people living with a disability.

What did Perth ever do for Leederville?IT has to be stated loud and clear—the current proposal for splitting up Vincent is absurd.
It completely ignores the WA government’s own Robson Report and to be honest is a kick in the guts for a community that appeared to be open to change.
Why would you split Leederville in half, why split Beaufort Street in half, why split what is a bustling, happy and tangible Vincent community in half?
Take Leederville as an example: The old City of Perth ignored Leederville for half a century. It doesn’t deserve to cherry-pick Leederville now, and god knows Leederville doesn’t deserve to be shafted back to a City of Perth that would be completely unaccountable to the Leederville community that actually loves and lives in Leederville.
And Beaufort Street—whichever genius decided Beaufort Street would benefi t from having not one, not two, but three local governments in charge, well, they
On the Macca bandwagonTHE article “Macca lifts Labor’s misery” (Voice, September 14, 2013) was a misleading piece of MacTiernan propaganda that misrepresented the election outcome and continued the MacTiernan mythology.
Despite the massive pro-MacTiernan media promotion through local papers and our daily and Sunday paper, as well as talkback radio, the fact is Alannah MacTiernan had the worst result of the three Labor-held seats in WA.
The swing against MacTiernan of 1.06 per cent was larger than the swing against Labor in the other two Labor seats of Fremantle and Brand, and it has left the Labor vote in Perth at its lowest in 30 years.
Perth is now a marginal rather than a safe Labor seat thanks to a solid campaign by Darryl Moore and the local Liberal Party members in a seat that had long been taken for granted as a Labor seat.
Maureen MeixnerFirst Ave, Mount LawleyThe Ed says: Maureen, Alannah
MacTiernan received a lot of media in large part because she made herself available, was happy to answer questions and had a lot to say. Mr Moore on the other hand all-but hid from the media—including the Voice, which made many attempts to speak with him on the record—till the campaign was over. You can’t have it both ways.
deserve an “idiot of the year” medal and to be put on paper clip-sorting duty for a month, if that’s not beyond them.
Are these people completely insane? Let’s get real... Vincent One In All In makes sense, we’ve got 6000 signatures to say Vincent folks want it, and if not for self-preservation of self-interested City of Perth Councillors it would happen.
If the City of Perth wants to be a real “capital city” then it needs to step up and embrace a signifi cant residential community. The metropolitan area is heading to two million, and yet you need just 2500 votes to be Lord Mayor? Lunacy. I’m not really sure why the whole population sits back and lets our CBD be governed by the equivalent of the body corporate of Dog Swamp Shopping Centre.
To me it is simple: Earth to City of Perth... get with the program—real cities need real people! My message to Perth ratepayers—vote for councillors who want to lead a real city and not just enjoy the gravy train. My message to Vincent ratepayers—keep up the good fi ght!

THE makeover of Prince Lane is complete. Some $800,000 was spent as part of Perth city council’s ongoing laneway revitalisation program to do up the once-tired alleyway. Six WA artists were
hired to come up with designs inspired by neighbouring King Street, and new gutters, granite kerbs and lighting were installed. The PCC’s hoping it’ll attract more investment in the area (which is predicted to take off with the sinking of the Fremantle line), and pieces by local artists have proved to keep taggers
away. It’s the fourth laneway to be spruced up after Wolf, Howard and Grand Lanes each received fresh coats of paint. Photos by Jeremy Dixon
by DAVID BELLAFTER fi erce negotiation and expensive supreme court action, Stirling council will rejoin the Mindarie regional council.
The decision will save Vincent ratepayers $300,000 in rubbish fees over this fi nancial year.
The MRC is the organisation that takes rubbish from member councils. The more councils involved, the cheaper it is to
drop off a tonne of rubbish.Stirling got fed up with the
MRC’s fees, especially given its rubbish was pre-treated and easier to process, and threatened to pull out. Two-years of negotiation and hand-wringing followed as Vincent’s fees shot skywards.
Outgoing Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan made it her mission to keep Stirling on board saying, “it is completely unacceptable that a council like Stirling would be allowed to bail out and then our ratepayers
have to pick up the increased cost”.
At her fi nal meeting Ms MacTiernan announced the negotiations had been successful and Stirling would stick around.
Stirling mayor David Boothman says the council decided to stay in because it was off ered a discounted rate.
“They said ‘we want you to come back in because it will reduce everyone’s fees; As an enticement we’ll give you a discount” that’ll last four or fi ve years.
Rubbish row over
by DAVID BELLBRUCE CAMPBELL is a man of his word: Last year he said he’d run against Perth city councillor Judy McEvoy for not supporting the Racism: It stops with me campaign and now he’s doing it.
The health and safety professional lives in Perth but on the Vincent council side, so he’s rented an o ce in the city to make him eligible.
“I thought: If someone was going to be openly opposed to a federal anti-racism strategy, that’s really not what you want to have in a Perth city council, being the hub of the state.”
His anti-racism stance was
forged while growing up around the outer south-eastern suburb of Thornlie: “I’ve always been aware of racism in the community: Growing up in a
multicultural suburb, you’ve got mates you’re hanging around with and someone will come along and call them something out of the blue, you’ve got to respond to that and stand up for your mate. I saw friends shaken, upset, and angry.”
But he says he’s not a single-issue candidate, and reckons his background in health and
safety can help make Perth a safer place and reduce crime, with opportunities for improved lighting, working with police and implementing “designing out crime” principles.
“I have got a very strong, practical skill I can off er the residents rather than just representing a certain business group.”
The 38-year old is also keen to support multicultural events in the city: “It’s important to send a clear and strong tone of welcome towards people from other nations, whether they are holidaying here, visiting relatives or even considering relocating and setting up a business. They need to feel welcome.”

by DAVID BELLEVEN more cash is to be splashed out on the $59,800 sculpture Games by Chinese artist Chen Wen Ling.
An extra $6000 is required to install and light up the pricy purchase which Vincent city council picked up from the Sculpture on the Sea exhibition.
The council had originally planned to pay local artist Matt McVeigh $30,000 for his abstract sculpture: The backtracking caused no end of grief and wrangling.
Cr Dudley Maier—the only councillor to support McVeigh’s sculpture—voted against the extra outlay.
He said he’d since found online that Games was one of a series of eight identical pieces.
“It was disappointing to fi nd out this wasn’t unique,” he said.
The location for the sculpture is still up in the air. A few ideas have been suggested like parks on the corner of Bulwer and Vincent, or further up Vincent on Charles Street.
Cr Matt Buckels described the latter location as a “pokey little corner on the most inhospitable park in Vincent”. Councillors will take extra time to wander through possible spots to pick the best.

A HERITAGE
staircase on King Street is here to stay after Perth city councillors refused to let it be pulled out for a big refurbishment. The old King Street cafe closed down at the end of 2012, and now clothing retailer Miu Miu is moving in. Miu Miu wanted to rip out the staircase as part of the spruce up, but Perth councillors stood fi rm. “The bottom line is the subject property is listed on the city’s register of cultural heritage signifi cant,” Cr Rob Butler said, concerned that if one bit of heritage was abandoned it’d be a slippery slope for the rest. He said the upgrade could still go ahead with the staircase there. The two-storey federation free classical style building was constructed in 1904, and occupied by clothing manufacturers before the King Street Cafe moved in.

big spends, said she’s happy to prop up events for the fi rst couple of years but after that they
should secure their own sponsors. Cr Adamos, elected in 2011, pointed out 10,000 people are expected to visit the city for the festival and spending $5 per visitor was a good investment. Cr McEvoy chuckled he’d talked her around, and backed the funding.
OKTOBERFEST will return to the supreme court gardens
this year after a “low number of complaints” about last year’s event. The 2012 Bavarian booze-up saw just fi ve complaints lodged, two for noise. Cr Rob Butler said organiser Nokturnl Events was addressing those issues. “Where would we be without an Oktoberfest in October?” Cr Butler asked. In Germany the event starts in late September and runs through to the fi rst weekend in Oktober.

SUPPORTING AMALGAMATION
www.bayswater.wa.gov.au [email protected]
Supporting Amalgamations for a Sustainable Future
The City of Bayswater supports the State
Government’s proposal for local government
amalgamation that will see a new Council created
covering the Town of Bassendean, City of
Bayswater, the whole of the suburb of Noranda,
and parts of the City of Stirling that include
Inglewood and Mount Lawley.
The new local government will be a responsive,
mid-sized Council well placed to serve its
population of around 102,000, which is similar in
size to existing local governments.
The City believes the new local government
created will continue to protect the character
and identities of local communities, preserve and
conserve the area’s heritage, provide enhanced
services and care for the natural environment.
Our support is based on real world experience of
an amalgamation when the suburb of Maylands
joined us from the City of Stirling and the
achievements of the City since that time. For
example, in terms of the natural environment, the
City:
sååWASåONEåOFåTHEålRSTåLOCALåGOVERNMENTSåTOåHAVEå
developed and adopted a Local Water Quality
Improvement Plan to help protect the
Swan River;

While some local governments are resisting
change, the City is working in a positive way
to ensure the new, mid-sized local government
created represents a great outcome for the
communities it will serve.
We are supporting a sustainable future by
supporting amalgamations.

by DAVID BELL“THE slums of the future” may be rolled out in Vincent courtesy of the WA planning commission says Alannah MacTiernan.
Vincent city council’s new town planning scheme was sent to the WAPC for approval (with WA planning minister John Day having rubber-stamped it), but when the council got the document back 19 months later, important clauses to prevent “cheap and nasty developments” had been scrubbed out by WAPC bureaucrats.
The WAPC deleted all mention of the council’s “design advisory committee”, a body composed of architects and designers that casts an eye over applications and recommends ways to make them look better and have less impact on neighbours.
by DAVID BELLA TASSIE victorfor the Perth haiku contestlocal poets snubbed
WA didn’t rate in the top three winners of the Perth city library’s haiku competition, nor in the top three “special mentions”. Ron C Moss from Tasmania took the top gong, and third and second place went to NSW poets. The three special mentions went to a Queenslander, another NSWer, and Tassie’s Ron Moss got another thumbs up. Hardcore haiku composer David Cohen (a journo at the Subiaco Post) entered fi ve poems in the contest and says the result is “a savage kick in the guts for local haiku writers”.
“I was so sickened that I wrote a haiku after I saw the news of who’d won,” he said:
“Eyes stinging, hurtingLittle poems have less worthSick as a sick koi.”
Ms MacTiernan, the former Vincent mayor and now federal Perth Labor MP, says the WAPC removed references to the committee to “dumb down” the planning scheme and make it easier for developers to get any old “rubbish” project approved.
It eff ectively strait-jackets the council into being forced to approve any application that meets the basic parameters of height and bulk, regardless of how they look.
“It will severely compromise the quality of planning in Vincent,” Ms MacTiernan says.
“The design advisory committee process... is absolutely essential to stop rubbish outcomes.”
She says Vincent has been onboard with rolling out medium density, but only if projects are high quality.
“We’ve been a council that has embraced multi-residential, and part of
what we have to do to keep supporting multi-residential is it has to be of decent quality.
“We can’t be creating the slums of the future.”
Ms MacTiernan says the DAC can still exist but without being engraved in the town planning scheme its recommendations will be given no weight in the event of an appeal to the state administrative tribunal.
The mayor says the WAPC also inserted “bizarre provisions” that could allow the East Perth concrete batching plants to remain well into the future.
The council wants the unpopular plants gone and the land converted for residential use, but the WA government last year gave them fi ve-year extensions to their operations.
The WAPC has inserted provisions into the planning scheme that prevents new residential development in the area.
MP raises ‘slum’ fears
Poor poets• The Beaufort Street sign is in the midst of being erected by local company Bremick (pictured is Ken Sealey, the creator of Vincent’s Big Blue Head, who was contracted to do some work on it). At $38,000 over budget, there were murmurs this week from some councillors displeased with how it’s looking, and whispers about withholding payment until it’s polished up to look more
like its promise in the brief. However as it’s unfi nished they’re waiting before o ering an offi cial critique. Photo by Jeremy Dixon

RED SHIELD APPEAL
voice arts
A SMOOTH white leg sticks up in the air, a red wheel attached. Next to it a walking stick wears a single shoe.
Theo Koning’s latest exhibition is full of quirky pieces sure to make viewers laugh, and ponder.
As I spoke to Koning it struck me that a lack of academic success seemed to be a common thread amongst artists.
Koning told me he suff ers a form of dyslexia, and left school aged 15. He was the third artist to have told a similar tale in as many months.
“My father said you are not doing that well at school, but you are good at woodwork,” the Fremantle sculptor, painter and art teacher tells the Voice.
An apprenticeship with a furniture-making fi rm put him on his future path, although at the time he didn’t realise it.
“I thought I would go further [in furniture making], but I was always fascinated by design.”
Enrolment in a night school sculpture course at the then-Claremont Technical College was Koning’s light-bulb moment.
“My world opened to me. Everything else fell into place,”
ARTS JENNY D’ANGERAAJ
Theo Koning in his Fremantle studio
he says, adding reading also became a pleasure for the fi rst time as he boned up on art history.
His fi rst exhibition was at the Fremantle Arts Centre in 1974 with a couple of artist mates: “My part was the hot chook slot” a sort of Kentucky Fried Chicken/meets old-style deli, Koning recalls.
A skull in a cage from the installation is still on show in his studio, a bustling, crowded space that is a treasure trove of
timber and metal in a variety of shapes and sizes, and an eclectic mix of “stuff ” collected over the years.
“[Bits] from op-shops, fetes or street throw outs. I gather as I drive along and see something that is interesting.”
Built of recycled bricks, “when you could pick them up for nothing”, his studio is a pristine space where thousands of objects are more art than clutter.
Koning puts his almost obsessive neatness down to his
apprentice days, where as “fl oor boy”, he had to ensure there was no sawdust, nor anything else, under foot.
Training fi lms showing what could happen if there was debris left in a place fi lled with buzz saws and cutting tools terrifi ed the youngster: “[People] slipping on a piece of wood—you don’t want to know what happens.”
In his latest exhibition There Be It, Koning departs from his usual style of a variety of raw and weathered timbers, mixed with contrasting “found objects”.
“I wanted it to look like one form, a unit not made of many bits.”
Renaissance art learned at college was dredged from his memories to achieve the fi nish he wanted, a gesso mixture from a recipe dating back hundreds of years.
“[Made] with rabbit skin glue and calcium carbonate.”
Gesso was used by Renaissance artists to prepare and preserve a canvas. Koning uses it to give his sculptures a smooth, almost “fake plaster” look.
Long one of Perth’s most senior and respected artists, Koning has works in galleries around the country, including the National Gallery in Canberra.
There Be It is on until October 5, at Turner Galleries, 470 William Street, Northbridge.

by design”

Hipster bars and restaurant are opening up left, right and centre. And hipster bars and restaurants are closing down left, right and centre.
When fashions are changing quicker than you can say “in vogue” it is nice to know that some things stay the same. And staying true.
Leederville’s iconic Giardini’s is one of them.
They know classic. They know what people love. They’re not trying to invent a new fad in the hope that it’ll stick. They’re just doing what they’ve always done, and what they’re good at. They’re going with what’s working; with the tried, tested and true.
Now in its 13th year running, Giardini’s is going from strength to strength and dishing up classic favourites, or variations thereof, with time proven recipes.
On one hand Italian and on the other a fusion of classic Australian they have many signature dishes on their impressive menu. For instance, there’s the Butterfl ied Garlic Tarragon Prawns perfect for a delicious start to any dining experience, and the Gnocchi with smoky Paprika Beef and Capsicum cooked with button mushrooms topped with shaved Parmesan. Or how about the Chicken and Mushroom Pappardelle with sautéed onions in a white cream sauce seasoned with garlic and paprika. Dishes worthy of Roman Gods.
Agnes Gould, owner-operator, has been in the game a long time. “A good, mouth-watering recipe never goes out of fashion” says Agnes. Fads come and go, one day it’s burgers the next day it’s sausages, but our recipes have stood the test of time and we know they’re working
because people come back for more” she continues.
Giardini’s also the perfect spot for functions with an impressive set menu on offer for large parties and an extensive wine menu to please even the most critical of wine afi cionado’s including wines from Margaret River, New Zealand and France.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)As the Moon eases off after provoking all sorts of intensity, so you adjust
yourself to a straight road. There’s been lots of corners. Though you have plenty of power at your fi ngertips, if you overlook your sensitivity, or anybody else’s, life will certainly let you know. Be whole.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)All that you have to let go of is dead weight. It’s your problems that are falling
away. It’s old habits of thinking that keep you trapped in uncreative cycles that are ready to fall from your being like autumn leaves. The familiar isn’t everything. The unknown is a beautiful place.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)This is a moment for perspective. Be-ing focussed more on truth itself than
any specifi c goals, you can see the wisdom in taking a gentler position, a gentler perspective. Harmony and sensitivity are profound, powerful and hugely appropri-ate. This is not imposed harmony, it’s real.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Moon starts her week in Aries, passing in front of electric unpredictable
Uranus. This makes you nervous. It’s likely that life is presently encouraging ‘actual’ change. Your fear will see it as a wrecking ball moving through your comfort zone. That’s an overreaction. It’s liberation.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)Mars is taking you by the hand and leading you towards your friends,
community, tribe. There’s no healing in isolation. Alienation leads to a lack of confi dence. It’s a ploy to keep people powerless. Reinforce who you are. Hang out with people who strengthen your self-respect.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)The Sun is at the tail-end of its cycle through Virgo. This is a last chance to tidy up
anything that is unfi nished, undigested, or incomplete. There is light. That means it’s possible to see things that you can’t always catch. Use the moment to identify solid creative options for the year ahead.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)The Sun moves into Libra this week. It’s not only heading towards birthday
time, it’s the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. That bodes well for cleaning out, for fi guring out what’s essential, true and creative and what’s not. Listen to the wise voice of your organism.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)There’s a lot happening in Scorpio. The most interesting is the
meeting between Venus and Saturn. This feels like all that’s been thorny and diffi cult is receiving a soothing, loving touch. This is not before it’s time. Grace comes when thirst is real. Let this be a new foundation.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Be articulate with your feelings. If you aren’t, you’ll hear all sorts of clanging
noises disturbing the atmosphere. To get this right, express your emotions in a creative way. Articulate doesn’t only imply words. Music is a language. Colour is a language. Movement is a language.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)Venus is crossing the path of Saturn in Scorpio. You are affected. This is a key
moment. It’s a time when thorny issues that have been dogging you, are softened and healed. Goats can be habitually stoic. Venus is no fan of such a path. She gentles this habit and sets you right.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)Testing reality inevitably leads you to testing relationships. Are they measuring
up, or not? Now’s the time to fi nd out. If they are, then you will dedicate yourself to them with even more of your revolutionary passion. If not, then it’s time to set them straight - in action not ideas.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)When life is fl owing, when feelings are fl owing, when creativity and
imagination are fl owing, we are healthy. Health is your meditation now. Health implies the whole of your being, not just your body. Mind, feeling and spirit are included too. Get yourself in synch with your organism.

But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing - and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit.
Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. Disney’s Planes takes off in WA theatres from September 26 and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select cinemas.
