HAVE you ever impressed your father-in-law with a bottle of homemade wine?

Well, now you can take your wine-making to the next level at the Italian Festival homemade wine competition.

The competition, now in its 18th year, is judged by connoisseur Michael Tamburri, who owns La Vigna wine cellar in Menora.

Last year 138 people entered and Tamburri says the vino is getting better with every passing sip.

“If it’s been a cool year then the winemakers can struggle, but in general the standard is definitely on the up,” he says.

“The competition is still predominantly red wine, but we get a few whites and rosé as well.

“It’s lots of fun and we welcome anyone to enter, regardless of ability or experience.”

KIDS who speak or are learning Italian have wowed judges in this year’s Italian Festival national year of reading competition.

The competition, open to kids from kindergarten to year seven in schools that teach Italian, had 612 entries from across WA.

The competition was designed to promote the Italian language.

Year seven pupils designed a book cover in Italian, while year sixes created a time capsule to be opened in 2062.

Assunta Martella, staffer at the Italian-Australian Child Care Centre in North Perth, said the small kids loved drawing Pinocchio.

“A lot of kindergarten kids drew themselves beside Pinocchio and coloured it in with crayons,” she said.

“They were very excited about the competition.”The winner of each year level receives $40 and a trophy.

The winning artwork is displayed at Belmont race course on race day.

Recent years have seen more women enter and Tamburri says they now make up around 20 per cent of competitors.

The number of non-Italian entries has also risen since the competition started.

Tamburri awards wines a score out of 20:• Appearance (3)• Bouquet (7)• Flavour (10)He says 99 per cent entered are drinkable but

there is the odd glass of vinegar.“The traditionalists still pick their grapes during

the long weekend of March, irrespective of the weather conditions,” he said.

“There has been the odd dusty wine container as well: If the container isn’t sterile it can contaminate and taint the wine.”

The homemade wine competition, which includes wine tasting, will be held at the WA Italian Club, 217 Fitzgerald St, on May 30.

It has a current vintage category (made in 2012) and a pre-vintage category (before 2012).

Admission is $5 (each competitor receives a complimentary ticket) and starts at 7pm.

Wines must be submitted to the Italo-Australian Welfare and Culture Centre by 4pm on May 29.

by DAVID BELLSEVENTEEN free speech protesters were evicted from Perth city council chambers Tuesday night for being rowdy.

“I think it was a travesty of justice that the Perth city council would not explain properly why they’ve denied the people of Perth free speech and democracy,” protestor Seamus Doherty told the Voice.

The Defend Free Speech in Perth group—composed of members of the Socialist Alliance, gay marriage activists, Nyungar tent embassy members and refugee rights proponents—presented a 200-signature petition decrying a series of crackdowns over the past year involving the PCC and police called in by council rangers, including:

• seizure of a sign advertising the CHOGM protest (September 21, 2011);

• ‘moving on’ of Occupy Perth (November 2011);

• disruption of the speak-out for Bradley Manning (17 December, 2011);

• attempts to shut down the Nyoongar Tent Embassy (March 2012);

• harassment of a refugee rights speak out (March 23, 2012);

• crackdown on a rally against gas fracking (April 21, 2012).

They’re also annoyed by hefty fees they’re charged to stage protests: Jess McLeod says equal marriage group Equal Love was charged more than $500 to use Forrest Place.

“The fees are really out of reach for a lot of community groups that are not-for-profi t and rely fully on donations from supporters,” she says.

“Every demonstration we send a bucket around and pretty much all of our money goes back to the City of Perth, meaning it’s very diffi cult

for us to ever use donations to do something more.”

In an open letter to the lord mayor and councillors, the activists say “every one of these actions represents a legitimate expression of a political point of view”.

“Attempts by city rangers to prohibit or disrupt these actions have been overbear ing and draconian—they are also attempts by the City of Perth to curtail or prohibit free speech.

“In our view, there can be no excuse for local government authorities to use (or misuse) local laws in ways that violate the right to free speech.”

PCC CEO Frank Edwards, a retired Army offi cer, told protestors the council’s bylaws were legitimate,

endorsed by state parliament.He notes community groups

pay less than commercial operators (for Forrest Place, $655 compared to $1310), plus $55 to access power and a $60 application fee. The council says fees and restrictions

are necessary to ensure public safety and protect the interests of stakeholders.

“All you needed to do was seek an approval via a simple application ahead of the event,” lord mayor Lisa Scaffi di wrote to them. “That’s not

inhibiting free speech... it’s being responsible [and] considerate of others’ needs.

“Please be reasonable [and] don’t seek unfair ‘exposure’ out of something that is not quite as you say it is.”

Mr Edwards told the group any test of the council’s bylaws must be done through the courts.

The meeting continued into regular business but dissatisfied by the answer they’d received, the protestors started to chant: “Democracy is under attack! What do we do? Stand up! Fight back!”

Ms Scaffidi adjourned the meeting and councillors scuttled to inner chambers while rangers and Brigadier (ret.) Edwards ushered the protestors out of the room, telling them they’d made their point.

“Another victory for free speech in Perth,” one sarcastically quipped on the way out.

“Should all go back to being real estate agents, it would suit you better!” another scoffed at the retreating councillors.

An email exchange between the protestors and Ms Scaffidi summed up the council’s point of view: “We will have to choose to differ on our respective views,” Ms Scaffi di wrote. “You have made your point very clear—you are about protesting... we have a city to manage and those needs are our priority.”

The group is planning further actions, including an upcoming free speech festival—for which it will have to pay a fee.

by STEPHEN POLLOCKPOLICE are refusing to charge a man who’d conned $185 out of a tourist—and is suspected of conning others—saying the crime is a “civil” matter.

Part of the con involved the man demanding copies of the woman’s passport. The Voice understands if the information was used in a fraud, it would constitute a federal crime attracting a 10-year sentence.

The scam also involved a fi ctitious business and business name, which constitutes fraud.

Siana Thompson, an English backpacker on a work travel visa, was staying at the Emperor ’s Crown hostel and looking for a job when a fellow lodger offered her an administrative position with Premier Commercial Services Australia, a fictitious cleaning business.

After signing an official-looking contract, Ms Thompson handed over a deposit of $185 to pay for a uniform and a mobile phone, as well as photocopies of her passport and social security details.

Alarm bells started ringing when other backpackers warned her the same man had tried to winkle passport details out of a drunk.

Ms Thompson, 23, went to the Northbridge police station and a sting was organised for a local internet cafe: It failed because detectives turned up late.

The man was nabbed at a second sting outside Priceline, on Hay Street.

Police ordered the man to return Thompson’s photocopies and $185. He has not complied and has since been stalking and harassing the woman by phone.

“He said ‘turn around’ and he was standing right in front of me: He had followed me to the café—it was creepy.

“Now he’s threatening to have me thrown out of the country.”

She’s complained to police

about the non-payment and harassment, but they now say there’s nothing they can do.

“The police said I was the fi fth backpacker who’d been scammed in the space of a few weeks and we were being targeted by conmen.”

Ms Thompson now has a job and is living in rented accommodation. Police didn’t get back to the Voice with info.

Cops shrug off con

Despite Punjab being an Indian state and the rival restaurant being 8km away, her solicitor advised she only had a 50-50 chance of success.

“As far as I know you can’t trade mark the name of a state, the state in which I was born,” Ms Kaur told the Voice.

“The whole thing was really

upsetting, especially when you’re in the fi rst crucial six months of business. We couldn’t afford to go through the courts.”

The Scarborough restaurant was established in 1981 by a family from the Punjab region.

Ms Kaur says another curry house in Mandurah has also been told to remove “Punjab” from its title. The Voice contacted the Punjab Indian Restaurant but it didn’t get back to us.

The loot, generously donated by taxpayers, will be spent on:

• a two-day exhibition;• commemorative souvenir

trays; • a 46-page book about the

history of Council House;

by STEPHEN POLLOCKTHE WA government is said to face a $13 million bill to buy out the lease of an iconic restaurant on the Perth Esplanade.

The swanky Grand Palace, trading out of the heritage-listed Florence Hummerston Kiosk on Alf Curlewis Gardens, has 33 years left on its lease (including renewals) with Perth city council.

The Barnett government wants to compulsorily acquire the lease so it can redevelop the site as part of its $440m waterfront facelift.

The Voice understands that during initial negotiations the Palace lessee asked for $20m. Government negotiators have reportedly haggled that down to $13m.

The Palace lessee spent around $1m renovating the forecourt just last year.

Lawyer Michael Hardy, representing the Palace, says “the fi rst preference of the lessee [Fai Wang] would be to remain in the premises, which have operated successfully since commencement.

“There have been negotiations with the State, but there has been no agreement in relation to the compensation for the prospective taking of the leasehold interest.”

The Florence Hummerston Kiosk, built in 1928, is to be relocated but WA planning minister John Day says he doesn’t know where. He expects removal sometime between June and early next year.

WA planning shadow John Hyde says the government must be upfront about the costs of the Palace talks.

“Why won’t the Barnett government be honest with taxpayers?” he asked. “All the minister will tell me in parliament is that the Florence Hummerston costs are included in the total $440m cost for the government’s waterfront project.

“The restaurant is obviously very profi table and the owners must have put a huge capital investment into a building they had a secure 33-year lease over.

“Taxpayers need to know exactly how much compensation is being paid and what the real costs are of putting this state heritage building into storage and then rebuilding it elsewhere.”

The place was built in 1963 and its modernist design with T-Shaped windows was

described at the time as “having the effect of a glittering diamond in the city when night falls”.

In 1992 staff abanonded the place so asbestos could be removed, and then there were fi ve years of debate as to whether to keep it or knock it down. It was eventually restored and is now heritage-listed.

Resident Hans says it was weird walking outside to see so many cars without plates.

“It was a bit chaotic, nobody had number plates and they were working out how to get to work,” he told the Voice. “We don’t usually get much crime or trouble in this street, maybe the odd drunk from the Inglewood Hotel making some noise, but that’s about it. A lot of the cars in the street now have sequential number plates: 881, 882, 883.” He says he was slugged $24 for new plates.

Theresa Bauer, in Australia just six months, says both she and her friend had their plates stolen. WA Police didn’t get back to us with comment. The WA Motor Trades Association says criminals are increasingly fi tting false plates to cars to evade CCTV when they drive away from petrol stations without paying.

Senator Chris Evans (Outrageous hypocrisy, Voice Mail, May 5, 2012), whose days in government seem numbered, made his point in three paragraphs, yet was indulged for 11 more.

Stirling’s Michael Keenan, in response, will doubtless expect similar space to blather.

While any other focus gives us welcome respite from Hyde, Kucera and Sutherland (note the alphabetical objectivity), there is by now surely a strong case for two regular Voice Mail pages.

Pictures could often be cropped to advantage thereby offering more space. And why not scatter Mail as fi llers for awkward corners?

Senator Evans was probably writing to order: Calling all the more for Voice vigilance.

These observations are made with, of course, best interest of the Voice, and its readers’ sanity, at heart.

An Irish evilALCOHOL is a central theme of Irish culture and this has been borne out recently for all the wrong reasons in Perth.

The accounts of alcohol-related violence committed by Irish visitors and emigres are disgraceful and show a degenerative way of life that is getting many in trouble with the law. Re-occurring accounts from Australia of wild behaviour reveal a generation more interested in the drink than fi nding work and beginning a new life.

Evidence is now emerging of a developing resentment by Australians towards the Irish because of nefarious behavioural patterns through the catalyst of alcohol. However, what is also clear is that Australian authorities are not going to have any of it and are prepared to revoke visas. These unruly Irish are giving everybody a bad name by their disgraceful activity and by all means they should they lose their visas and be sent packing back to Ireland to their local watering hole!

End age discrimination for driversWA Self Funded Retirees is a not-for-profi t seniors organisation and we support the state government fi nally moving on outdated regulations, by increasing to age 80, when older drivers must start annual medical checks before reissuing a driver’s licence.

Unfortunately, the changes do not go anywhere near far enough.

The WA transport minister acknowledges research by the Offi ce of Road Safety shows older drivers are not disproportionately represented in crash statistics, and says the 2008 introduction for mandatory reporting of medical conditions or driving impairments

for all licence holders, has proven to be the best method.

It is therefore illogical to require drivers aged 80 to 84 to undergo specifi c annual medical checks, plus an annual practical driving test from age 85.

WA remains the only state or territory requiring annual age-discriminatory practical driving tests. Most require medicals but here in WA they are unnecessary because of the acknowledged proven and better system introduced in 2008.

Our members consider the minister should heed his own advice and, as a matter of urgency, abandon the unnecessary age discriminatory medicals and practical tests. Until then, our organisation will continue advocating for a better deal for senior drivers.

FAR, far more than the kick from one book is that from having several

on the go.Most days I dip into the Bible

and the Bard—for the majestic prose.

Others in currency include Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina; William Hazlitt’s The Fight & Other Writings; Donna Tartt’s The Secret History; Henry Hitchings’ Defi ning the World; and Ulysses by James Joyce.

I suppose—ah, stuff supposing—Hitchings’ Who’s Afraid of Jane Austen? goaded me to take on Ulysses.

In reading about four pages a day, I’m up to page 180. What pushes me on is the snobbish notion that with each page turned I join a more exclusive minority of readers. More reasonably, I suspect I’m beginning to enjoy it.

And at this pace, with about 500 pages to go, I don’t need worry for a while about reaching the end. And when I do, there’s in store Finnegans

Wake, also by Joyce.(In mitigation, I’ve read

somewhere that true snobs are never for an instant aware of their affl iction).

And by the way, as Hitchings points out, there’s no apostrophe attached to Finnegans.

I’ve already glanced at Finnegans’ Introduction—an apostrophe okay perhaps in this context?—The opening sentence of this, well, er, here it is:

“The fi rst thing to be said about Finnegans Wake is that, in an important sense, it is unreadable.” So says Professor Seamus Deane.

Ah, so!I’m also reading Harold

Bloom’s The Shadow of a Great Rock and re-reading Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon.

The latter a far cry from, “‘Gobble, gobble,’ said the turkey”.

That’s the fi rst sentence I remember reading aloud, to my primary school teacher, as I stood beside her desk and faced the class soon after November 5, 1945.

Comics followed, then Hugh Lofting’s Dr Dolittle. But

what brought out the dormant bookworm in me was Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons series; likewise with my two adult daughters.

The full set of Ransome at my shoulder as I tap away at this. Below Ransome, the Inspector Morse mysteries.

All the above can prompt brief despair, followed by their power to inspire.

My farming parents could write and read, but never enjoyed either, even dreaded putting pen to paper. The only book in the house before I reached my teens was a Bible with padlock and our family tree tucked in the back. Dad and mum argued for days the wisdom of buying me a dictionary.

Then there entered my life Ephraim Chambers. For more than 50 years he’s rarely been out of reach; coming to my rescue even now with other dictionaries exhausted.

Once I had 30 or more dictionaries. Today four. My daughters having fl own the nest perhaps explains the absentees. I trust they’re giving kicks.

by DAVID BELLIT’S a pretty common sight we ran into Friday night in Northbridge, a young couple engaged in a heated argument on the street corner. It had gotten physical: She was trying to pull away, he was pulling her back.

But what do you do? No-one was getting hurt—yet—but things could have gone south rapidly.

It seems like the situation is too low-intensity to call the police, and if you intervene yourself you might think you risk escalating the situation or copping a glass to the face from an angry young male.

Veteran copper John Pintabona says police would rather be called out and get there before anyone gets hurt than turn up afterwards to pick up the pieces.

A volunteer for the White Ribbon organisation to stop violence against women, Mr Pintabona says the last thing you should do is keep walking.

“Presence is important,” he told the Voice: Simply sticking to the scene of a confl ict can help show the participants the behaviour isn’t okay.

“If you feel reasonably strong about it your visual presence offers some form of surveillance.”

But he adds, “I think one of the most important things is you need to contact the police the minute it becomes anti-social”.

He says a good gauge for when to call the police is to put yourself in the shoes of the person being victimised, and ask if you’d like the police to be on the scene if it was you.

“If the person is being pushed or manhandled, that constitutes assault, that’s an offence. Police need to come very quickly.”

He says you should never feel like you’re wasting police time to get them to come out to a heated argument on the brink of turning into an assault.

“I’ve attended many incidents where it’s simply been a quarrel or argument or people have stood their ground, and we’ve gone in there and mediated and it’s calmed things down.”

He recommends the non-emergency number—131 444—for non-life-threatening situations.

Researcher Michael Flood produced a report for White Ribbon and found evidence backing the notion people should intervene and not just walk by.

“When a man intervenes in a violent incident in progress by offering support or assistance to the woman being attacked, he may lessen the harm she suffers during that incident, and she may hear the message that she is not to blame for, and does not deserve, the violence infl icted on her,” the research states.

“When a man intervenes in a violent incident in progress by challenging the man who is using violence against a woman, he increased the chance that the perpetrator will at least slow down or limit the violence he’s infl icting.

“The perpetrator may be put on notice that he won’t get away with violence, and he may be more likely to take responsibility for his actions.”

Dr Flood points to a 1992 study that shows, “one of the most traumatic issues for victims or survivors is that [bystanders] do nothing”.

PERTH city council is to formalise its sister city relationship with Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province in China.

The PCC currently has a three-year-old “charter of mutual friendship” with the city but a PCC report says the more formal “sister city relationships are highly regarded by the Chinese Government and people”.

“There are no immediate fi nancial implications” involved.

Cr Lily Chen (who hails originally from Nanjing in Jiangsu province) explained the importance of sister cities to her culture.

“The Chinese people always consider the blood relation is the highest one, that’s why they move from friendship charter to the sister city.”

The council reckons its Chengdu relationship is bearing practical results, with an increase in students, business opportunities and tourism arising from the partnership.

The PCC says it’s “diffi cult” to say how much the relationship costs the council. Some $344,000 is spent every year on the PCC’s 12 sister-city relationships, including two staff who also look after an international relations program.

The council had been reluctant initially to add Chengdu to its friends list but did so at the strong urging of Perth federal Labor MP Stephen Smith, a former foreign affairs minister, and Australia’s ambassador to China, who’d both noted the potential for practical economic benefi ts.

EAWA Events Pty Ltd is the major source of operational funding and administrative resources for the WA Student Grants Program. The program is committed to assisting Years 10, 11 and 12 students to meet the basic costs of completing their schooling and then support them into the workforce.

Founded in 2011 by Alexandra McClunie, she says she started the company after she realised that young people were being left out of the WA resources jobs race in favour of older employees and 457 visa candidates, and that the government spends $1b a year supporting early school leavers who largely drop out because they can’t afford to stay in school. She says “WA is the luckiest state in Australia, but we have to look to our own back

yard for the resources of the future. With the support of voluntary board members and corporate sponsors the WASGP has now started identifying students in lower socioeconomic areas and we are funding expenses up to $500 per student per year. This small amount can prevent drop-out.”

The program then assists school leavers to fi nd meaningful employment or carry on into further education by guiding them on a one-on-one basis until they are settled. Program manager James Maxwell said this year the program is also running a fundraising campaign called ‘Give Me 5', “We want 500 businesses or individuals to donate $5, $50 or $500 dollars, it’s not a lot of money for some of the highest valued companies in the state and we need them to get behind the kids, especially if they take on trainees or other entry level workers.”

The constitution of the WASGP allows 10% of its annual income to be applied to other causes and in 2012 the program is using these funds to assist adult Aboriginal workers. “It’s just a case of taking some time and clarifying employer and employee expectations and cultural differences. We have 100% success rate with this part of the program proving what we are doing is of value. Its resource intensive but the long term gains for all concerned are obvious for all to see. It’s the same principal as the school leavers, we need to look in our own back yard before we go further afi eld.”

We are educating and entertaining the Perth professionals so we can in turn educate our kids. Everybody wins.

The council was presented with the gong at the 2012 WA heritage awards.

It was nominated by the Mt Lawley Society, which has worked closely with the council to help preserve heritage-listed buildings.

by DAVID BELLWEST TV has marked its second anniversary with a big birthday present: For the fi rst time ever, community-TV-produced shows have been bought by international commercial channels.

Australia’s only cake-decoration show, Roxanne’s Cake House, will be shipped to Russia, South Africa, New Zealand and China, Horsetalk is screening on DubaiTV, and Hound TV and a couple of other animal shows will be piped to Russia (they love the pooches in Putingrad).

Station GM Tibor Meszaros says the Chinese are looking at purchasing the Perth-produced series Crime and Punishment, so they can compare criminal justice systema.

“In China where lots of crimes happen and the punishment’s so harsh, they want to know what’s happened outside China in the western democratic countries,” he says.

The jewel in the crown of WestTV is the Perth-produced Roxanne’s Cake House.

“My idea was to start small and start locally,” producer Warren Masilamony says. “And it would have been a bonus

just to reach nationwide, but to go international is defi nitely a bonus.”

“We have a small crew, a crew of six or seven of us, it’s not a big crew like MasterChef, and it’s a big achievement to get it shown around the world.”

Mr Meszaros recalls that when WestTV fi rst started a lot of people told them they’d never make it.

“Everyone in town was laughing at us saying ‘these community-minded idiots have a good intention, but they’re not going to work it because they have no money’.

“No-one imagined we could manage it with so little money.”

But the station’s grown rapidly: These days it’s the most watched community TV station per capita, and they’ve just teamed up with a local internet provider Highway 1 to start simulcasting online.

Water Corporation spokesperson Louise Fleming says the cavity was caused by a section of corroded wastewater pipe, and repairs should be fi nished by the end of the week.

“It is not possible to give the exact cost of the repair at this stage,” she added.

“The cost of the repairs will be covered by the Water Corporation’s overall maintenance works budget.”

I’M off to Spain in a month, so looking over el Publico’s heartily

authentic Mexican menu felt like good language training.

The menu is a big A3-sized, double-sided beast with a small square reserved for food and the rest of the terrain taken up by tequila and other boozy concoctions.

With a typical dish name being something like “salmon aquachili salsa borracho fi nger lime”, it’s a relief the staff will sit down and (slowly) talk you through what you’re ordering.

Ordering the salmon aquachile ($17) sees a modestly-sized plateful of tender chunks of fresh translucent salmon criss-crossed atop a gentle lime-green salsa. Overall it was one of the milder and more normal dishes we came across, but the tangy fresh fi sh marinated in lime crossed with the refreshing, smooth, gentle salsa was worth the price of entry.

The crispy whole street prawns is a must-have. For a mere $9 you’re served a pot of little critters just over an inch long, and when they say “whole” prawns they really mean it: legs, faces, eyes, antennas... the texture takes some getting used to. The fi rst bite is like chewing open a phone cord with little wiry bits of prawn-face digging into your mouth, and for a moment your brain tells you “not food!” but you quickly realise there’s nothing to be worried about as you keep crunching and it all goes according to plan, delivering a savoury-clad seafood taste. By the end of the night we were throwing them back like chips. Little once-living chips that used to swim around saying “mama, mama”. Bad for your conscience, good for your hunger.

We also ordered the sope bean paste free-range chicken house queso ($16), but we never found out what it was because it never arrived. The order

was mixed up and instead we ended up with a curious type of chicken salad. Curiously, the staff member who brought the salad to the table insisted it was the queso, before another waiter came along to admit there’d been a mistake. Weird.

I would’ve complained about the mix-up except the chicken salad was very good. A large dish, the chook is placed in a bag and then poached at about 78 degrees for hours on end. The result is a delectably tender meat: moist slices free of that horrible powdery dryness that can infect so many chicken dishes. It’s served on an interesting base of crushed pumpkin seed and almonds, providing a slightly bitey contrast with the soft, fl oury black bean paste. A fi ne consolation prize to the queso.

Drinkswise, the margaritas are competently made with fresh lime juice and served in a glass encrusted with sea salt fl akes—

but predictably expensive at around $17 each, which is getting to be standard for a cocktail in Perth these days.

The other strength of el Publico is the wide range of tequilas, with dozens available ranging in price from $10 to $50, $75 and even $100 a shot. Tell the staff what you usually drink (Jose Cuervo reposada for me), and how much you want to spend, and they’ll set you up with something to appeal to your taste, budget and ego.

I don’t speak much Spanish yet—there are many hours to spend listening to lessons before I can even consider myself “inept”—but I don’t need much to sum up el Publico: me gusta.

A CO-FOUNDER of the WA Italian Club died May 7 at the age of

102.Amedeo Antonino Re was a

Northbridge legend who, during a long and colourful life worked on Wall Street and in Rome. He survived the Great Depression and two world wars, losing an eye in the European confl icts.

Mr Re, a member of the well-known retailing family, was raised in Northbridge and went on to work at the Perth Italian Consulat. He helped found the WA Italian Club in 1934, fi ve years before authorities started rounding up people of Italian descent for internment.

More than 100 crammed into St Brigid’s church Monday to bid him farewell.

The heritage-listed Northbridge church held great signifi cance for Amedeo Re: He’d attended school at St Brigid’s, lived across the road, married his wife Santina there and his kids were christened there.

Stirling city councillor Elizabeth Re says old age never tempered her uncle’s zest for life.

“At the age of 95 he learned how to use a computer and send email,” she said.

“He loved it and used it to communicate with his family in America.

“He said that in his nine decades it was the best invention he had ever seen.”

During his twilight years Mr Re wrote a memoir about his years growing up as a child in Northbridge, which Cr Re hopes to get published.

She said she would miss her “favourite” uncle. “It was a privilege to know someone so inspirational and intelligent.

ONE of the world’s most feted art photographers is coming to Perth.

Jeff Wall, famous for fusing digital art with classical composition, will open his three-month exhibition at the WA art gallery this month.

It is the fi rst time the Canadian has exhibited in the southern hemisphere.

His 1993 photograph A Sudden Gust of Wind, changed the way photographers approach the medium: Instead of capturing a fl eeting moment, Wall used actors, costumes and props to painstakingly recreate the Edo painting Travellers caught in a sudden breeze at Ejiri (1832).

Wall’s recreation, shot on farmland outside Vancouver, depicted businessmen chasing tumbling sheets of manilla.

Unlike many contemporary photographers who rejected classical art, Wall embraced the scale, composition and subject matter of 19th century painting.

He spent more than a year taking photos and manipulating them on his computer—which Wall describes as “cinematic photography”—to create the fi nal montage.

UWA chief curator Gary Dufour says light boxes are being used to enhance Wall’s 2X3m tableau.

“A Sudden Gust of Wind has 50 fl uorescent fi xtures behind it,” he said.

“The light box is 25cm thick and looks like something you would see in a bus shelter.

“They add a fl ickering, luminous quality to the river in the photograph.”

In total there will be 26 photographs from three decades on show including

The Destroyed Room (1978), After Invisible Man (1999) and Knife Throw (2008).

Wall’s art has infl uenced popular culture with Iggy Pop and Sonic Youth to name but two using his photographs on album covers (The Destroyed Room and Avenue B).

In 2002 Wall was awarded the Hasselblad Award and in 2007 was made an Offi cer of the Order of Canada.

Dufour, who has known Wall for more than two decades, says that despite his

success the 65-year old remains humble but always keen to expand his horizons.

“He’s always had an eye on art history, but some of his most recent work like Knife Throw, is more a comment on photography itself,” he said.

“The picture of the knife in mid-air is a play on the stop-action photography that was popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

“He’s always alert to the world and cities he visits, especially the less salubrious sides.

“This is his fi rst visit to Perth and I’m sure he will absorb it like a sponge.”

SOME houses have an avuncular charm. They whisk you through their door jamb, sit you down

view, complete with kitchenette bathroom and loo. It is the perfect spot for dad to hide in at night and write his long-awaited biography: Eric Ripper: The Spock Years.
