Fall 2017 Lecture Series How to do Math (and Computer Science!) while Cutting a Cake Dr. Suresh Venkatasubramanian Associate Professor, School of Computing, University of Utah We think of math as hard and all about adding numbers. We think of computer science as staring into a glowing screen and writing code all day and all night. But this is nothing like what they really are! In fact, math and computer science are everywhere we look. And to prove it, Suresh will describe the intricate mathematics of how to cut a cake. This is a fun (and delicious!) problem, and is also used to negotiate treaties, resolve divorces, and generally help people agree on how to share. Dr. Suresh Venkatasubramanian has a background in theoretical computer science: the study of the intrinsic complexity of computations. Over the years, he has become more interested in problems of data analysis (which he likes to think of as a special case of high dimensional geometry!). He is also a sci-fi fan, and has spent many years reading cyberpunk thrillers, which got him thinking about our machine- enhanced future. A few years ago, Suresh started imagining what it would be like to live in a world where all his decisions were controlled (or nudged) by algorithms that learnt things about him, and it didn’t take long to realize that we’re barreling into a future driven by algorithms that aren’t that smart, and aren’t particularly fair.
