4-H COMMUNICATION & EXPRESSIVE ARTS CONTEST June 15, 2020 6:30pm Crossroads Church, Napoleon DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: June 1st The Communications & Expressive Arts Contest is an opportunity for youth to pass along knowledge, which they have gained through a 4-H project or other activity they have an interested in. This event is designed to encourage members to actively pursue excellence in presenting demonstrations and talks. As well, 4-H recognizes that not all youth are comfortable speaking in front of others. 4-H’ers can be involved in an expressive art division that taps into the 4-H’ers creativity. There must be at least one 4-H member in a club register and participate in the contest in order for the club to be considered for Honor Club status. No matter what division or category the 4-H’er chooses to participate in, Honor Club points will be awarded. EXPRESSIVE ARTS DIVISION CATEGORY 1: Performing Arts ACTIVITY: Poetry In Motion (Creating & Live Reading) Description: 4-H’er can express their experiences in 4-H through an original poem that focuses on the member’s 4-H experience. 4-H COMMUNICATION & EXPRESSIVE ARTS CONTEST June 15, 2020 6:30pm Crossroads Church, Napoleon

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: June 1st

The Communications & Expressive Arts Contest is an opportunity for youth to pass along knowledge, which they have gained through a 4-H project or other activity they have an interested in. This event is designed to encourage members to actively pursue excellence in presenting demonstrations and talks. As well, 4-H recognizes that not all youth are comfortable speaking in front of others. 4-H’ers can be involved in an expressive art division that taps into the 4-H’ers creativity. There must be at least one 4-H member in a club register and participate in the contest in order for the club to be considered for Honor Club status. No matter what division or category the 4-H’er chooses to participate in, Honor Club points will be awarded.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS DIVISION

CATEGORY 1: Performing Arts

ACTIVITY: Poetry In Motion (Creating & Live Reading) Description: 4-H’er can express their experiences in 4-H through an original poem that focuses on the member’s 4-H experience. The 4-H’ers reads their poem aloud to the judge/s. Instrumental music can be played in the background, but member must provide their own music the evening of the contest. 1. Provide 1 typed copy of the 4-H poem to be presented. 2. Participant must introduce him/her self, the name of their 4-H club and the name

of their original poem. 3. The poem should consist of at least four stanzas. 4. Poems should not be repeated from previous performances Judging criteria:

CATEGORY 3: Visual Arts ACTIVITY: *Sculpture Description: 4-H’er can create a small sculpture (no higher than 12” and no wider than 12”) from modeling clay that depicts the current years’ theme. 2020: “There’s No Place Like 4-H!” 1. Entry must include the 4-H’ers name, age of January 1 of current year, and the

name of their 4-H club on the bottom of the sculpture. Additionally, the 4-H’er will complete a exhibit tag when they bring their sculpture to the contest.

2. The sculpture is hand formed. No green ware or pre-cut molds accepted. Judging criteria:

a. Judge’s appeal b. Reflects current year theme

ACTIVITY: *Drawing Description: 4-H’er can create a drawing that depicts the current years’ theme. 2020: “There’s No Place Like 4-H!”” 1. Entry must include the 4-H’ers name, age of January 1 of current year, and the

name of their 4-H club on the back of the drawing 2. Mediums acceptable include pencil, colored pencil, scratch art, pen, charcoal and

ink, or felt tip for drawing. Painting made by oil, watercolor, or acrylic paints. 3. Drawing size should be 8’’ X 10” paper, canvas or other flat surface. Frames or

mat boards are allowed. NO GLASS please. You may place a clear protective covering over the drawing (plexi glass, clear plastic wrap or laminate)

ACTIVITY: *Painting Description: 4-H’er can create a painting that depicts the current years’ theme. 2020: “There’s No Place Like 4-H!””

1. Entry must include the 4-H’ers name, age of January 1 of current year, and the name of their 4-H club on the back of the drawing

2. Painting may be created in oil, watercolor, or acrylic paints. 3. Drawing size should be 8’’ X 10” paper, canvas or other flat surface. Frames or

mat boards are allowed. NO GLASS please. You may place a clear protective covering over the drawing (plexi glass, clear plastic wrap or laminate)

NEW IN 2020!! ACTIVITY: Photograph Description: 4-H’er can photograph a subject/scece that depicts the current years’ theme.

2020: “There’s No Place Like 4-H!”” 1. An 8” X 10” photo must be presented in an appropriate frame. NO GLASS please-

may use plexi glass or a plastic covering directly over the picture (not the frame) 2. Entry must include the 4-H’ers name, age of January 1 of current year, and the

name of their 4-H club on the back of the frame the photo is presented in. 3. Text may or may not be part of the photo.

ACTIVITY: *Themed Table Setting Display (Functional Art) Description: A team of two 4-H’ers will work together and create a themed table setting display. 4-H’ers do NOT need to be enrolled in a food/nutrition project in order to compete. The guidelines are as follows:

A. Theme Decide what type of occasion (formal, casual, picnic, etc.) and the meal you would serve first. Incorporate the county theme

B. Table Appointments This would include any item used to set a table: tablecloth, placemats, dinnerware, glassware, flatware and centerpiece/decoration. *You may use paper plates, plasticware, and paper napkins for a picnic for example, but they would not be appropriate a formal dinner. *Flatware and dishware must be safe to eat from (example: no glitter, glue on eating surfaces)

C. Table Covering You will have a square card table (34” X 34”) to set up your display. *You may opt to bring your own card table as long as it meets the table size stated. The table covering is the background for your table appointments and the food that you would be serving. It protects the table and makes less noise. Placemat and/or table clothes may be used. Choose the table covering that is appropriate for the occasion and appointments.

D. Place Setting Allow at least 20 inches of space for each person’s dishes. In this contest you will set your table for 2 individuals. This is called a cover and each cover is exactly the same. A cover contains the dinnerware and flatware for the meal you plan to serve. The following rules for setting a table correspond to the numbers seen in the table setting diagram on the next page:

The flatware, plate, and napkin should be one inch from the edge of the table.

1. The plate is always in the center of the place setting. 2. The dinner fork is placed at the left of the plate. 3. If a salad is used, it is placed to the left of the dinner fork. 4. The napkin is placed to the left of the fork, with the fold on the left (unless a

decorative/creative fold is used). The napkin may also go under a fork or on top of the plate.

5. The knife is place do the right of the plate with the sharp blade facing in towards the plate.

6. The teaspoon is placed on the right of the knife. 7. If a soup spoon is needed, it is placed to the right of the teaspoon. 8. The soup bowl may be placed on the dinner plate. 9. The drinking glass is placed at the tip of the knife. 10. If salad, bread and/or dessert plate(s) or bowl(s) is used, place at the top of the

fork(s). 11. If coffee or tea is served, the cup is placed on the saucer and set to the right of the

spoon. Have the handle pointing to the right. ****Only the utensils needed are placed on the table.

E. Centerpiece/Table Decorations Your table setting should include some sort of centerpiece that coordinates with the table appointment and goes along with the occasion. This is the category in which your creativity should shine! *Candles used as part of or as a centerpiece are not to be lit.

F. Contestant’s Attire

Contestants’ clothing should correspond with the theme of the table setting. Contestants should be well-groomed as well.

G. Other Details *You will not display actual food on the place setting. Food items, however, may be used as props in your display. * An electrical source will be available should you need it for your display.

* Set-up for the contest: you should plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to the contest starting time (6:30pm start time) to set up your table. * Check in at the Café’ and then proceed to set up your table setting. Once you have your table set-up, please have a seat in one of the chairs in the area marked for contestants.

H. Judging & Interview You will present your table setting to the judge by telling him/her about your ideas and why you created the table setting the way you did. Scoring is as follows: Use of the Theme= 45pts.

*Does the table display show functionality, originality and creativity *Centerpiece/decorations appropriate to the theme *Is the overall effect pleasing to the eye

Contestants= 25pts. Are the contestants well-groomed and dressed appropriately (dress for your interpretation of the theme) Did the contestants explain their table setting Did the contestants show enthusiasm and interest General Appearance= 15pts.

*Are all displayed items clean. Cloth items well ironed. Flat/silverware clean and/or polished; Glassware clean and sparkling

*Is the centerpiece/decorations fresh and clean in appearance *Are the napkins and linens/placemats/runner/tablecloth appropriate to the table setting

COMMUNICATION DIVISION

CATEGORY 4: ILLUSTRATED TALKS & DEMONSTRATIONS A.) Members are encouraged to select a topic of their choice and interest. *Due to the facilities

in which the county/ district/state contests are held, the use of large animals in a demon- stration is not feasible. Members should adjust the topic of the demonstration or use model animals. Firearms, bows, arrows and weapons may not be used in a 4-H demonstration or illustrated talk. Plastic replicas are permissible.

B.) Members are expected to present a different demonstration/talk each year he/she participates. All work is to be original work created by the 4-H member(s).

C.) A team demonstration consists of two people sharing the speaking and teaching role. When members of a team fall into different age divisions, they will participate in the older age division.

D.) Any small animal (under 20 pounds) may be used in a 4-H demonstration, provided the animal does not place the public at risk and that they meet all of the health requirements established by the Ohio Department of Agriculture Livestock Health Requirements available through the Extension Educator, 4-H. Current health and shot records must be carried with the animal. Animals must remain caged or leashed before and after the presentation.

E.) Members are to set up their demonstration on their own with no outside assistance. A judge’s assistance will be available if the 4-H’er needs assistance.

F.) The Divisions for the Demonstration & Illustrated Talk Subdivision are:

ACTIVITY: Illustrated Talk or Demonstration Without the use of Computer Technology; Junior Individual Division (age 8-10) AND Junior Team Division:

+The presenter/s uses appropriate props and other visual aides to teach others about a subject or how to do something.

+Demonstrations should last between 5-7 minutes. Scores reduced four points for times over and under.

+Note cards may be used to assist the member; the demonstration MAY NOT be read. +May use charts, posters, pictures t accompany their illustrated talk or to stress points with their demonstration. PowerPoint or computer generated messages are NOT used in this division. +Participant’s dress should be appropriate to the demonstration being presented. +Members are evaluated on their ability to present a speech.

ACTIVITY: Illustrated Talk or Demonstration With or Without the Use of

Computer Technology Intermediate Individual (age 11-13) Intermediate Team (age 11-13)

Senior Individual (age 14 and up) +The presenter uses appropriate props, posters and/or computer generated visual

aides to teach others about a particular topic, practice, procedure, scientific principle or phenomenon. Use of computer generated visuals is NOT required. For example: -A demonstration may be delivered in this category. PowerPoint or other software may be used in addition to other props to help present their message. -An illustrated talk may be delivered in this category with the member(s) using PowerPoint or other software to present all or part of the visual message; must be accompanied by live narration.

+Requires live speech delivered along with the PowerPoint, poster or other message (no pre-recorded narration). +Member is evaluated on their communication skills and their ability to effectively use

technology within their Illustrated Talk or Demonstration. +Illustrated Talk/Demonstration should 8-10 minutes in length with four points

deducted for times over or under. +Participant’s dress should be appropriate to the demonstration being presented.

CATEGORY 5: 4-H MARKETING

ACTIVITY: Junior Individual (age 8-10) a.) Thank You Card Without Computer Graphics or Scrapbooking Tools b.) Thank You Card With Computer Graphics or Scrapbooking Tools + This should be an original “thank you” card with artwork on the cover. An inside

message is not required, but may be included at the discretion of the designer. Inside message will not be judged. REQUIRED: Use of the 4-H emblem

+ Only one entry per member + Card should be on 81/2 x 11 cardstock, folded once. + Art and message must be the original work of the member + Member may use any medium, including crayon, chalk, pen and ink, pencil, markers,

etc. + With computer graphics: Computer graphics are permitted, provided they are the

original work of the member. No commercially designed clipart may be used. + Use of copyrighted or protected characters or logos is NOT permitted, with the

exception of the 4-H emblem. The 4-H emblem must be used correctly. See http://www.national4- hheadquarters.gov/emblem/4h_name.htm for guidelines.

+ Member’s name, age, and county should be neatly printed in the lower right-hand corner of the back of the card.

+ Cards will be evaluated based on quality, creativity and originality of the design and the originality of the message.

ACTIVITY: Intermediate Individual (age 12-13) Only one entry per member Intermediate Individual (age 11 - 13) – Holiday Card – without the use of computer graphics or scrapbooking tools. Intermediate Individual (age 11 - 13) – Holiday Card – with the use of computer graphics or scrapbooking tools. • Entries in J-8 and J-7 should be an original “Holiday” card with artwork on the cover. An inside message is not required, but may be included at the discretion of the designer. Inside messages will not be judged. Use of the 4-H emblem is strongly encouraged, but not required. • Card should be on 8 ½ x 11 white cardstock, folded in half. (Only one fold) • Art and message must be the original work of the member. • Member may use any medium, including crayon, chalk, pen and ink, pencil, markers, etc. No use of computers or scrapbooking tools in creating entries in Class J-8. Designs must be hand- lettered and drawn or cut by hand. • When using 4-H logo that is downloaded it must go into the graphics division. • Artwork or lettering created with the aid of scrapbooking tools or computers is permitted in J- 9 provided the design is the original work of the member. No commercially designed clipart may be used. • These designs must be able to be duplicated. • Member’s name, age, and county should be neatly printed in the lower right-hand corner of the back of the card. • Evaluation will be based on the quality, creativity, and originality of the design. • By submitting an entry, you give the 4-H Foundation the rights to use the chosen cards as the 4-H Foundation’s official Holiday Cards for 2020. The cards will display the 4-H member’s first initial and last name.

ACTIVITY: Senior Individual (age 14 and up) 4-H Infomercial Promoting 4-H + Only one entry per member. + This is a video “short” that promotes a county or the state 4-H project or program or

some aspect of that project or program, such as junior fair, camp, etc. + This must be a fully automated, stand-alone video presentation with sound and

narration as appropriate. + Think “You Tube”. The video should include recorded visual, sound and narration to

convey a message. + The video should be the original work of the member making the entry. + Use of copyrighted or protected characters or logos is not permitted, with the

exception of the 4-H emblem. The 4-H emblem must be used correctly. See http://www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/emblem/4h_name.htm for guidelines.

+ Images in the video should be appropriate for promoting 4-H. Use pictures of youth who are of 4-H age; appropriate safety practices (ex: wearing helmets on horseback)

+ The video should be 2-4 minutes long. Penalties will be assessed for videos less than 2 minutes or longer than 4 minutes.

+ Videos must be submitted electronically to Sally McClaskey ([email protected]). The video must play using QuickTime Player or Windows Media Player. Be sure to include in the email the member’s name, age, county and video title.

+ Remember to get signed photo releases from people in the video. + By submitting an entry, you agree to allow counties and/or the State 4-H office

to use the promotional video to promote 4-H. Evaluation will be based on the quality and originality of the message, which should persuade the viewer to action, as well as on the creative and professional use of technology.

ACTIVITY: PSA (Public Service Announcement) County Only

Age Divisions: Juniors 8-10 Years Old Intermediate 11-13 Years Old Senior 14-18 Years Old

+ Public service announcement length requirements are as follows: o JUNIORS 8-13 Year Olds= 30 Seconds o SENIORS 14-18 Year Olds= 60 Second

The announcement must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used in Henry County for a variety of events.

+ The announcement must be the original work of the presenter. + Sound effects and public domain music may be used. Copyrighted material may

NOT be used. + Submit PSAs by Noon the day preceeding the contest to [email protected] + Use .wav or .mp3 audio formats when recording your PSA.

CATEGORY 6: HEALTH & SAFETY SPEECH & TEAM SKITS 1. Members may participate as an individual or as a team. A team is formed to compete in the

Team Skit/Talk Division. 2. Speech topics can cover any area of health or safety that affects family living, whether it is in the

home, on the farm, on the highway, or in public places. Examples: safety helmets, tornado safety, precautions when in the sun, safety with boats, toys and tots, dental issues. Contestants shall not include music, singing, or dancing as part of their speech.

3. Members presenting speeches must bring a typed copy of their speech they are presenting and a completed single page biographical form (provided by state).

4. The Divisions for the 4-H Health & Safety Contest include:

ACTIVITY: Junior Division: 4-H'ers 9 (8 and in the 3rd grade) through 13 years old as of January 1 of the current year

+Speeches should be not more than 2.5 minutes and not exceed 3.5 minutes in length. Speeches under or over these time limits will be penalized 10 points. AT THE COUNTY LEVEL ONLY: JUNIORS MAY UTILIZE PROMPTER NOTE CARDS, BUT THE MEMBER CANNOT READ THE SPEECH FROM THE CARDS! +No visual aids of any kind may be used in the speech. +Participant’s dress should be appropriate for the type of speech they are giving.

ACTIVITY: Senior Division: 4-H'ers 14 years old through 18 as of January 1 of the current year.

+Speeches should be no less than 4 minutes and not exceed 5.5 minutes in length. Speeches under or over these time limits will be penalized 10 points. +No visual aids of any kind may be used in the speech. +Participant’s dress should be appropriate for the type of speech they are giving.

ACTIVITY: Team Skit/Talk Division: Consist of two to five youth with no age divisions.

+The time limit for the skit/talk is no less than 5 minutes and not exceed 8 minutes. Each member of the skit must have at least 1 minutes of speaking time.

+Trademarked or brand names of products should not be used on props, costumes or mentioned in skit.

+Props can be used but no posters or printed materials are permitted. +All participants should be part of gathering the research information for the skit/talk. +Members participating in the team skit/talk division must use a new topic and materials

each year. +A team winning at the State Fair level will not be eligible to participate in the contest

with the same team members and/or topic at any level. Other: +Awards will be given at the county level in each of the divisions listed above. The county may select one contestant from the Junior Division and one from the senior Division to enter the Regional Contest. One Team Skit/Talk may be selected for the Regional Contest also.

+ALL SPEECHES PRESENTED AT THE DISTRICT REGIONAL LEVEL (AND STATE) MUST BE PRESENTED BY MEMORY! NO PROMPTERS OR NOTE CARDS ARE ALLOWED. +A member who was a winner in the county or regional level contest in 2019 is eligible to participate in 2020 providing he/she was not a State level winner in 2019.

CATEGORY 7: JOB INTERVIEW CHALLENGE Purpose The Job Interview is designed for members to use their communication skills and to practice and demonstrate the skills needed in seeking employment. Each part of this event simulates real world experiences that members will have when seeking employment in the future. SECURE A JOB INTERVIEW CHALLENGE PACKET ON LINE OR THROUGH THE EXTENSION OFFICE

Contest Information 1. Participants , 14-18 years old, must bring the following items with them to the contest:

A. A typed cover letter and résumé as a result of his or her own efforts; no fictitious information should be used.*

B. A writing utensil and white out.

2. Participants will be evaluated on their cover letter, resume', application and personal interview.

These scores will be totaled and the member with the highest score will be declared the winner.

Scoring Guide Cover Letter 50 pts. Résumé 50 pts. Application 50 pts. Personal Interview 250 pts. ------------------------------------------------ Grand Total 400 pts.

Example: black and red on white -- don't use yellow on white. 11. Keep the work space clear and free from clutter. 12. Talk in a conversational tone. Be natural. 13. In a team demonstration both participants should demonstrate and explain. 14. Reveal posters only when you are ready to use them in the demonstration. 15. Conclusion of demonstration should be known by audience without individual saying

"This concludes my demonstration". 16. Practice your demonstration as much as possible. 17. Talk slowly and clearly. 18. Thank your audience and ask for any questions.
