La Casita 4-H held their first meeting October 3. Each member selected a big pumpkin to decorate for the Pumpkin Contest. During National 4-H week we learned the 4-H pledge and decorated our pumpkins. It was a lot of fun!!! Mrs. Argo and Mr. Lopez delivered our scary, creative, and character “works of art” to the contest. We were very excited to receive ribbons and prizes for the

pumpkins. This was the first 4-H ribbon for many of our members, but it won’t be our last! Members wrote thank you notes and colored pictures for our pumpkin donors. 5-2-1-Almost None fun activities helped us learn the importance of exercise and healthy eating. We even helped prepare a healthy snack!

Bulls eye! Beautiful Sunday afternoon, enthusiastic youth, volunteers and parents Twenty-two youth participants attended the October 26 Archery Shoot at the Research and Education Center. Instructor Dr. William Campbell reviewed safety rules, shooter ethics, archery equipment and shooting technique. Participants learned to select the correct size bow and arrows and proper shooting stance. Shooters completed three rounds (6 arrows per round). This group will have two more archery shoots in November. A spring series of three shoots will be held for 4-H members who were unable to attend the October training. Clubs represented were Bunny Busters, Computer, Clover Knights, Cypress Heart & Hands, Dublin Hill, Harbor Lights, Hollymount, Livestock, Rossakatum and Seaford Blue Jays. International Dinner The International Foods is a non-competitive event for 4-H’ers enrolled in the Foods and Nutrition or Exploring 4-H projects. The 4-H’er chooses a recipe representative of a foreign country or different culture, prepares the food and brings it to the covered dish dinner part of our dinner theater. Each participant is encouraged to dress in the clothing that depicts the nation or culture of their recipe. The food is displayed and each 4-H’er tells their name, what they made and the country they represent. The food is then sampled by all in attendance. Please label your banquet serving ware for easy return that evening. Pre-entry required.

Talent Show (Pre-entry required) The 4-H Talent Show is the theater portion of the evening. Each club may choose to do a skit, song or dance. Clubs may choose to send a member of the club to represent them in a solo or duet vocal or instrumental selection. This is the time to share your talent with fellow 4-H families. You provide the entertainment for the evening.

Rossakatum, Paige Vincent, reporting

At our meeting we had a lot of “ouwees and ouchees!” NO, nobody really got hurt. We practiced first aid for cuts and scrapes. With a little fake blood and a few existing football scrapes, we learned the correct way to clean and prevent infections. Always clean your wound in a circular motion from the inside out with an antiseptic wash and apply an antibiotic ointment to keep out bacteria. Then wrap it like a mummy to keep it clean (that was the fun part). This month’s meeting was at our new location “The Rossakatum House.” Thanks to Ninny and Grand Dad Vincent for allowing us to use one of their unoccupied houses that has water, electric and heat to hold our meetings in. It is perfect! We found out from our Historian Nathaniel that the word “Rossakatum” was the name of a Nanticoke Indian Chief. See we knew there was more to our name than just the name of a tax ditch. Our first President has been given the job of designing a logo for our club. Noah tells us he is thinking of a shape of a canoe with the word “Rossakatum.”

This was a great meeting jam packed with fun, friends, and good food, pumpkin bread, low fat caramel apples and popcorn. We had two new people come and check us out. They found out about us from our window display. I guess you could say that was effective advertising. Maxx’s mom was an old 4-H’er and so was his Grand mom, they have come to us with great ideas for upcoming events. Thank goodness we decided to do a window display. Looking for a new club? Ours is awesome. We would like to share some fun with you! Great job on your pumpkins Rossakatum!! A special “How How” to Devan and Paige for winning the premiums.

Harbor Lights, Stephen Magee, reporting

This 4-H meeting we got down and dirty learning about preparing gardens. On October 6 at the home of member Mikayla Ockels, we started our cooperative garden. We plan on preparing the soil now and planting in the spring. There are four steps we did to condition the soil. We all helped spread the fertilizer, chicken manure. Even the girls spread it. It was stinky! Though it is disgusting, it has many nutrients for the soil. Then we tilled the ground, and I worked my first piece of heavy equipment, the rototiller.

That part was fun! Next was to pull out the clumps of grass and roots. Finally, the last step was to plant clover as a cover crop to add nutrients and protect from erosion. After the garden work, our club president, Lauren Meoli, called the business meeting to order. So much to do this fall! Members will be preparing pumpkins, projects, photos, and plays. The Christmas musical will add singing to our theater experience this year. Our wonderful autumn night ended with a great fall snack of apple cider, hot chocolate, gingersnaps, brownies, and crisp apples provided by club members. Next meeting will be at the Lewes Church of Christ at the Point for play practice also.

Livestock, Rodney Wilson, reporting

At our meeting this month, Holly Anderson led the pledge. We had two new members join - Rebecca and Jackie Arpie. Our window display received Third Place for Sussex County. We practiced for the skit we`re going to do at the talent show for the International Dinner. Plaques were presented to

Rodney Wilson for First Place in the Junior Livestock Skillathon and to Maggie Lee for Third Place in the Senior Livestock Skillathon. Our club will be going to a haunted forest on Friday, October 24. We

followed-up by painting pumpkins at the end of the meeting.

Hollymount, Kaitlin Philcox, reporting

For our second meeting, we were happy to announce that we did a great job cleaning-up the adopt-a-beach, with no rain! A couple members attended the State Fair ground for the Arts and Crafts Fair. We got inspired. We received an honorable mention for our wonderful window display in the Milton Library! Holly Anderson led the 4-H pledge,

Our Safety Presentation was on Trick or Treating and we played a candy corn relay race. Seaford Blue Jays, Zach Cannon, reporting The October meeting was called to order on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. Our newly elected officers for the year are as follows: President - Maggie Durig, Vice-President - Nathan Bradley, Treasurer - Shannon Bradley, Secretary - Madeline Gilbert and Reporter - Zach Cannon. We have also had two perspective new members attend our last two meetings. We have been busy planning our upcoming activities and ways to serve our community. The club met towards the end of September to work on our 4-H sign to promote National 4-H Week. We painted our hands green and made clovers out of their impressions. It looked really cool and was a lot of fun to do. The sign was displayed on Route 13 Alt. in front of a local business. So far, we are planning to volunteer and donate items to a local SPCA, in addition to making and delivering meals to those in need for the holidays. As a fundraiser for our club, we are in the

process of starting a recycling program by collecting used ink cartridges, toner and old cell phones. Ann Nesbitt, of the Seaford Library, came to our meeting and gave a presentation about the new library that is going to be built out by the Ross Mansion. Ground has already been broken and the library should be completed by next fall. Our club volunteered to help them with landscaping when they are ready. Congratulations to Maggie Durig, Madeline Gilbert, Cole Koski, Shannon Bradley and Nathan Bradley for the awards they received at the Achievement Night Banquet. All of our club members received pins for having 100% participation for completing project books. We look forward to another great year!

We met at Miss Carlene’s house and welcomed some new members: Emilyee Wright, Bethany Satterfield, and Danielle Thompson (Bethany’s sister, Alicia will

join us in October). Emilyee and Karin led us in the pledges, and then Miss Kathy spoke about the upcoming year. Each 4- H’er will give a talk/demonstration at a meeting and will also be responsible for cleaning-up for at least two meetings. There was a sign-up sheet for those responsibilities, as well as attending the Jr. Council meetings. Our club leadership responsibilities are: President: Ashley Conroe Vice-President: Jillian Harkness Secretary: Dan Harkness Reporters: Natalie Gano, Karin Pusey Phone tree callers: Maggie Ford, Flynn Mullins

Miss Sally and Miss Kathy talked about a fall clean-up for the road we have adopted. We’ll sign-up for a weeknight or weekend day in October at our next meeting. It was agreed that we would contact Miss Becky about a ceramic project at our December pot luck dinner meeting. Miss Renee is organizing the window display; Karin shared her idea of the “Treasures of 4-H.” They will E-mail everyone about the date and time to bring supplies together and begin working on it. After everyone signed-up for this year’s projects, we enjoyed ice pops courtesy of Miss Carlene. Our next meeting will be at Lord Baltimore School, 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8.

Hi, this is the reporter Breana. We have been getting ready for the pumpkin contest. I bet that it is going to be very exciting. We can’t wait to see how our pumpkins do. We also finished our window display. Our theme was called “Take a Shot Join 4-H”. Our window display had basketballs hanging

and it had all kinds of sportsmanship words. It was really nice. Also, this week we will be having our next meeting on Friday, October 17 and we will be seeing our first newsletter of the year. I hope you like my news article and I am looking forward to writing another news article very very soon.

Sussex Lighthouses, David Collier, reporting This month our 4-H club (Sussex Lighthouses) went to Mallard Lodge. It is a nature and wild life center in the marshlands near Woodland Beach. We stayed over night in the lodge, but before we went to bed, we had a campfire made by self-proclaimed expert fire maker Wayne Biggs (Ha-ha). We made smores and played a game called Delaware Marsh Land Symphony organized by Sharon Collier. We have no clue when the parents went to bed. The next morning we woke up and ate a hardy breakfast. (Well, most of us got up in the morning, but one mom slept in and we will not tell you it was Mrs. Ramona.) After every one was up finally, we

started our first class on birds organized by Carolyn Biggs. First, we played a game called What Do You Eat with That Beak? This game helped us learn what different beaks birds have and how they use them. We walked down the road and climbed the observation tower to identify birds. We mainly observed Canadian Geese, Snow Geese, Egrets, and Herons. The older kids went canoeing and the younger members went fishing. It was an eventful day fishing. Our members caught approximately 33 fish. Alex Greenlee caught the largest fish; it was a full-size Large Mouth Bass caught with a worm instead of a lure!!!! That must have been a big worm. Garret Biggs, Antony and Marcia Duron, Nate, Sharon, and William Patterson, and Adam Greenlee caught Blue Gill. One of our clover buds, Catlin Greenlee, caught a young Bass by herself. When we finished fishing, we rested and then had a pizza party to end the day.

The October meeting was held on October 8 at Lord Baltimore Elementary School. Mrs. Carlene started the meeting by handing out the awards for the project books. Everyone in our club turned in a project book this year, way to go! Karin and Trevor Pusey led a fall craft. We got to make spiders out of little pots that were painted black. For the spider’s head we used a pom-pom with google eyes. Then pipe cleaners for the legs. It was a lot of fun and the spiders looked great! Now we can enter them in the Fair. In honor of National 4-H Week and Mrs. Carlene’s birthday, we enjoyed delicious ice cream cake. Happy Birthday Mrs. Carlene! To top all this off Trevor Pusey brought his adorable Guinea Pig, named Jill in for a demonstration. He told us how he cares for her, what she eats and why he loves having a guinea pig as a pet. Also thank you to everyone, especially The Pusey family who helped in the making of the wonderful window display. It turned out great and we had a lot of fun making it too! This meeting was tons of fun! Hope to see everyone in November!

Sussex County Bunny Busters, Dustin Waller, reporting

Hello, 4-H’ers. This month’s Bunny Busters meeting had seven people in attendance. This meeting was exciting, Mr. Joe brought all male rabbits to give away for free. In the new rabbit kit, there was a poster with a picture of a rabbit. So, Mr. Joe had the kids name the parts of the rabbit. It was cool because after the kids had named the parts, the parents came up and also named the parts. Also, in the new kit was a rabbit tattooing package. So, Mr. Joe painted the tattoos and he had tagged a piece of paper. Then, at the end of the meeting we did a hangman game on the rabbit poster. In the next meeting, we are hoping to elect new officers. All the meetings will now be held on the second Thursday of each month and it will be at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m.
