Good behavior, excellent grooming, and tasteful attire—these are the three things that Nikita Chandak,Miss

Nepal 2017, finds most attractive in a man. But, even if you think you are a deserving guy who fits the bill, it’s not the right time to make a move. She’s completely focused on first making a career for herself (besides of course having her plate full as the reigning Miss Nepal) and it’s not just some ordinary career she has her mind on. She wants to be an actress and rule the silver screen.

“I have always wanted to be an actress,” she admits candidly, her large beautiful eyes frank and honest, and surely destined to be her signature feature when she makes it in the world of films. Her five-foot six-inch frame, svelte and lissome, will surely also add to the allure, as will her close likeness to the popular Bollywood star Deepika Padukone, who is naturally her favorite actor.

Nikita is only 20 years old, yet she has already taken steps in the right direction to make her grand dream a reality. “I have been doing modelling for the last one-and-half years,” she discloses. She has walked the ramp in some big shows in Bangalore and Hyderabad, aside from being one of the runway stars at the TGIF Fashion Week here in Nepal. Her interests, singing and dancing, also are in tune with her ambition.

Of course, her biggest step has to be the Miss Nepal crown she won on June 2, 2017, in Kathmandu, coming ahead of the beauty pack in a keenly contested event, and in the process, also gaining fame as the first girl from the Nepali Marwari community to do so.

A wonderful victory, no doubt! “Yes, my family is really proud of me,” she says. This, naturally, is another aspect in her favor to reach the challenging goal she’s set on achieving, since family support gives a tremendous boost to one’s confidence. “My family is very encouraging,” she adds.

Talking about her Miss Nepal experience, the girl from Urlabari, Morang, says, “I am not that decisive a person, so even after I was selected in the audition, I was in two minds about entering the contest.”Enter she did, and sailed into the finals with great aplomb, where she stood out among the other beautiful contestants due to her stately air of quiet confidence and pleasing demeanor. In fact, before the crown was placed on her head, she already had won two sashes, one of Miss Confidence, and the other of Miss Popular Choice.

She continues, “Actually, although I am a goal-oriented person, during the Miss Nepal contest, I hardly had any thoughts of being the winner. I was only determined to put in my best efforts and make proud all those who had belief in me.” Her commitment to giving her best was reinforced by her keen power of observation. “I learnt a lot from watching what other contestants were doing during the contest,” she reveals. “That, and the training we received, made me more confident, and helped in making my efforts fruitful. But, really, I must say that I did not at all expect to be Miss Nepal! You could say that I was ready to accept any result, whatsoever it be.”

Her modelling experience was another plus factor, doubtless. “Having been a model for some time, I was already in shape, since I was going to

the gym regularly. Besides, I am a very fastidious person when it comes to food, and have always avoided junk food, so there wasn’t much of an issue regarding a special diet or anything like that.”In case you are looking for some beauty tips from the new beauty queen (the 22nd Miss Nepal), this is her own regimen, especially during summer: “a sunscreen is a must, and I use a good moisturizer all over my body. I also drink lots of water, and make sure that I clean my face before going to bed.”

It’s a very simple routine, one has to say, and guess that’s because she is a naturally beautiful person, with lovely features and a great complexion.

Besides her willowy frame and impressive height, of course! An excellent mix, wouldn’t you agree, for a beauty queen? Or for an aspiring movie star? Right now, though, she is still absorbing the state of her current circumstances, her schedule packed with one interview after another, and a photo shoot or two every other day. Which means that the magnitude of her wonderful achievement has yet to sink in fully. “Yes, with my tight schedule, I really haven’t had any time to give in to my feelings,” she agrees. At the same time, she is aware of the profound change -in her life, and states confidently, “I know that I have do justice to my responsibilities as Miss Nepal 2017.

You’ll have noticed an inordinate number of airlines closing shop. What was the reason? Well, the primary reason was the high rate of accidents that obviously led to financial ruin. “Running an airline is the fastest way to be a billionaire from a millionaire; similarly, it is also the fastest way to bea beggar from a millionaire.” – An airline owner, whose airline has folded. Now, her’s a list of accidents (with fatalities)involving domestic carriers from 1960 to 2017:

ConclusionAccidents do happen, but the number of airlines involved and the frequency of such events point to something seriously wrong with airline safety in Nepal. After every crash there’s a commission to find out why, and the reasons arrived at have been either technical failure, human error,or bad weather. Perhaps

other aspects, such as poor quality of airplanes, lack of proper maintenance, and avaricious management practices, should also be taken into account? One would assume that lessons have been learnt, but looking at the record, that is doubtful.

DJ Prajwal, Owner & Founder, Wave DJ AcademyMeeting friends, colleagues—having a good time—that’s all that matters in my opinion. Most recently, I was out at Club Deja Vu, my friends and family were with me. I also visited my old club to see my old teammates and friends; the bartenders, DJs, and other staff. We stayed out late, drinking and dancing. It was a great night!

Pramod Goofy Shrestha, motorcycle enthusiast, Vice President, Friends of royal enfield Not a regular night out, as such, but one of the most memorable trips I have had was a bike ride to Manang. Getting out of my comfort zone, traveling to Manang on a bike on the challenging roads, was a very thrilling experience.

robin Tamang, Lead Vocalist, robin & the revolution, media PersonalityI don’t go out at night these days, but the most memorable night outs were the ones I had at a bar named Bamboo Club in Thamel, which is closed now. I used to go there regularly, and quite a crowd turned up to see us perform twice a week.

Vivek Jain, General manager, Silk Air I generally don’t go out at night, so I

haven’t been to many places to enjoy the nightlife here in Kathmandu.

However, I sometimes prefer going to restaurants for dinner. I enjoy Indian

food at Kakori, Soaltee Hotel, and Blue Coriander in Mirage Lords Inn. I also like going to Alice Restaurant in

    Gairidhara.

rabin Shrestha, executive Director, reeF restaurant &

Lounge I normally go out on weekends,

with my friends of course, it’s my regular night out. Recently,

I’ve been to Karma Lounge & Bar, then some bar hopping,

meeting my friends, and such. That’s what I enjoy doing. I love the places, the music,

especially the music, and just, the atmosphere.

If you were to look out on the streets of Kathmandu at around nine or ten in the night, you might be tempted to think that the city goes to sleep pretty early. No public vehicles running, not many private vehicles, either. All the shop shutters down, and barely a soul on the streets. Really, what is there to do at night? Except sleep. If that’s what you believe, think again!

Despite appearances, there is still plenty of life in Kathmandu after dark. And, being the helpful friends that we are, we have brought you a list of ten things that you can do to enjoy nightlife in Kathmandu.

    TexT By ShreeShA nAkhWA

    Just hang out

Have you ever been to Swoyambhunath Stupa at night? NO? Well you must. Tonight! The night view from there is simply mesmerizing.

You can see the entire city twinkling below you. Similarly, there are many other places around the city, especially around the three

durbar squares, or around other major tourist destinations, where just being there at night is an experience on its own. The lights and the

atmosphere is out of this world. And, because it’s nighttime, it isn’t too crowded. Another bonus point.

    Dance the night away

If you like partying and dancing, the city has some amazing nightclubs for part-going Kathmandu-ites. Again, many of these night clubs are

clustered around Thamel, which itself has a vibrant night life. So, gather your friends and head over to Déjà Vu, Cube the Club, Blue Galaxy, Fire

Club, and more. The music is loud and the atmosphere is lit up; what more can you ask of a night club? Dance away into the dawn till your feet can

    move no more.

If you consider yourself somewhat of a photography enthusiast, then after-dark is a great time to polish up your skills and your portfolio. The

above mentioned places for a night time hangout are also perfect for nighttime photography. You can get a bird’s eye view of the entire city from

Swayambhu and capture the lights of the city. You can also get amazing photographs at the three durbar squares. Even the streets of Kathmandu look amazing in the night lights. Head over to Baneshwor after nine, and

you’ll be amazed at how beautiful it looks, both to your naked eye and through your camera lens.

Sing all nightIf singing is more of your thing than listening to music, there are

many karaoke bars in Kathmandu, where you can indulge and test your vocal chords. House of Music has karaoke- night once a week.

Similarly, places like Villa Everest Korean Restaurant also have karaoke for you and your friends to enjoy.

    Bring your camera

    Enjoy local/street food

There are many hidden gems around Kathmandu that serve

mouth watering local dishes at dirt cheap prices. Many of these foods come in gadas. Ask your friends for the little shops around their

locality that makes amazing chops, pakoras, momos, panipuris, and

more. You’re sure to stumble across amazing food that you would

never have tried otherwise. Many street food vendors open up their gadas as the sun starts to set. You

can find some amazing street food around Mangalbazaar, Kupondole,

    Basantapur, etc.

    Cover Story

Nothing feels as refreshing and borderline therapeutic as driving at night. The roads are empty and free of dust and pollution (to some extent). No horns and traffic noise reach your ears. The road is entirely your own, and you can drive much faster than you could during the day. As

you drive by, the street light look more like a streak of yellow, orange, or red, rather than individual points of light. The entire scene looks beautiful. So, head out of your house at nine or ten at night on your bike or scooter, and enjoy driving on the empty roads.

    Drive away

    Order in and chill out

If you don’t feel like getting out of your house, or even your bed, at night, there is no need to. There are still services that cater to you. You can order food in the middle of the night, and have it delivered to your doorstep. Services like BhokLagyo, which serves food from 8:00 p.m.

till 4:00 a.m. are a godsend to those who like a bit of a midnight snack. You can even have a slumber party with your friends and order food for everyone in the middle of the

night. Or, you could simply start a movie on your laptop and enjoy it,

while eating delicious food that you did not have to cook in the middle

of the night. These are only some of the things

you can do at night in Kathmandu city. Whether you’re a party animal

who likes to dance, or you prefer more solitary pursuits, there is

    something for everyone to enjoy.

    Eat your heart out

One of the best times to enjoy the amazing food and drink options available in Kathmandu is after dark. After a busy day of work, head down to one of the numerous restaurants in the city to enjoy a good meal and a good time with friends. Most of the restaurants in Kathmandu are congregated around the

Thamel and Jhamel (Jhamsikhel) areas. Head over to Thamel for a lively evening in the tourist district. Or, if you prefer something more peaceful, Jhamel has a

selection of restaurants to rival all others. You can find almost any type of cuisine in Kathmandu. If you like pizzas, head over to Fire and Ice in Thamel, or go to

Hankook Sarang for some Korean food. Places like Tasneem’s Kitchen and Yellow Chillies have amazing Indian food, and Saigon Pho in Lazimpat is the place for Vietnamese food. So, enjoy a nice night out with great food and good friends.

    Go to the movies

Who doesn’t love movies? And if you are a film enthusiast (or even if you are not),it’s nice

to watch movies at night. Gather up some friends or family, have

your dinner, and then and go for a night time screening of a new movie that you’ve been

dying to watch. Nighttime also means less of a crowd, both

in the theater and out on the streets, so you’ll have to face

less of a hassle while enjoying a new movie

    Enjoy live music

If you love music, Kathmandu has many, many, bars and clubs

to cater to your needs. Most restaurants and bars around Thamel and Jhamel have live music. And, if your tastes are

specific, you can still find places you’ll like. Head over to Purple Haze in Thamel for some hard

rock music. If you love Bob Marley and the like, go to Reggae Bar, again in Thamel. As soon as

you enter, you’ll know that Reggae is in the air. Funky Buddha plays

out some amazing psy-trance till midnight. Electric Pagoda

features local bands playing soft numbers, perfect for a romantic night out. There are also many

other places like House of Music, Shisha Terrace, Moksha, etc where

    you can enjoy incredible music.

    Super Chef Fi-Dangand her Delectable

Thai CuisineYin Yang Restaurant has a history to be proud of, and a chef who

conjures up amazing and genuine Thai cuisine.

    TexT By AmAr B. ShreSThA

Thailand is a favorite tourist destination for many Kathmandu-ites, most of whom, without fail, come back rhapsodizing about the fantastic Thai cuisine. Well, they need not just immerse themselves in pleasant memories, they can relive their gastronomic experience again and again at Yin Yang Restaurant in Thamel. For this is where you are guaranteed truly authentic Thaifood, prepared by no less than a Thai chef, Ms. Chorthip, who is more popularly known as Fi-Dang (“It means ‘Elder Sister’”, she said), and who has been with this legendary restaurant for the last nineteen years.

Yes, that’s right, it has been a long time now that Fi-Dang has been putting her exquisite cookery skills in preparing all those delectable dishes that have become so popular with many Kathmandu-ites. Among which is Pad Thai, the national dish of Thailand, listed as one of the five most popular dishes worldwide. Well, I tried out Pad Thai last Saturday at Yin Yang, sitting at one of the tables in the garden dining area next to the open kitchen—a most agreeable setting—in the company of friendly owner Ritesh Shrestha and cheerful Chef Fi-Dang.

Among the world’s most favorite foods“It has Thai noodles, sugar, and imli (tamarind), besides other ingredients,” said the chef, who incidentally has five chefs in her family! It teased my palate with its sweetish flavor. “Thais like sweet food,” she added. Well, it was a sweet dish like no other I had tasted, really tasty and flavorful. However,

the soup I had alongside, Tom Yam Koong, was far from sweet, and it is also a very well-known dish. A spoonful was enough to bring new warmth in the depths of my being, its spicy-tangy flavor zestful, to say the least.

Along with prawn and other ingredients, and a lot of fragrant spices, this rejuvenating soup also included lemongrass and galangal, both of which Fi-Dang had herself brought from Bangkok. This is another reason why Yin Yang prides itself on serving genuine Thai cuisine, they use the best ingredients sourced from their place of origin. The lemongrass from Thailand, I can vouch, imparted a really rich citrusyaroma, while the galangal (a cousin of ginger, but without its pungency), is an interesting part of Tom Yam Koong, and very agreeable to the taste.

Fine dining, Thai styleAnother dish on the table was Som Tum, a spicy salad with a certain character of its own, quite bracing, which Ritesh revealed, was a favorite with Nepali customers. So, we were having quite a balanced meal, with Tom Yang Koong, the piquant soup, Pad Thai, the sweetish appetizer, and Som Tum, the spicy-flavorful salad. Next, it was time for tasty bites of Chicken

Satay, mentioned as SA-TE Yin Yang in the menu. Skewered on a stick, the grilled chicken was a tender delight that was easy and fulfilling on the palate, and not as spicy as most other Thai food. It tasted all the better with its thick and creamy peanut sauce. Peanuts, I have to note here, are a part of many Thai dishes, including Som Tum.

Another regular ingredient is coconut milk, and especially more so in the green curry—I think it was KaengKhiao Wan Kai (Green Curry with Chicken)—that we had along with steamed Thai fragrant rice. The curry was excellent, and I wanted to know what made it so special, to which Chef Fa-Ding replied, “The vegetables are fresh, and the coconut milk, an essential part of the curry, is also fresh.” Adding to this, Ritesh stated proudly, “Yes, unlike many others, we only use fresh coconut milk.” That’s another feather to Yin Yang’s cap, that they are extra careful about the condition of their raw materials. A note on the white rice: Yin Yang serves genuine Thai fragrant rice, which may add to the cost, but certainly also adds to the authenticity of their Thai cuisine.

One of the most popular restaurants in KathmanduThe Thai experience at Yin Yang was

pretty exciting, the dishes prepared by a Thai chef with two decades of experience, and in a restaurant that is quite legendary. Established in 1970 in Basantpur, near the famous Freak Street, by Ritesh’s father Mr. Tejendra Nath Shrestha (popularly known as TJ to his multitude of loyal customers), Yin Yang was the most popular restaurant in the area at the time. Along with the shifting of the tourist scene to Thamel, TJ also established a restaurant by the name of Third Eye Restaurant in 1989 near Kathmandu Guest House, the landmark of Thamel. Yin Yang Restaurant, alongside, was set up in 1996. So, it’s not only the delectable Thai cuisine that one goesto Yin Yang (it could well claim to be the pioneer in introducing Thai food in Kathmandu), it is also the delightfully friendly atmosphere one finds there, with some staff still from the good old days, and of course, Chef Fa-Ding herself!

Now, having given you a glimpse into the world of Yin Yang (which by the way has two more dining rooms on the first floor; seating capacity being 150), let’s go back to the food again. Yes, there’s more. Thai cuisine is reputed for its many fantastic sauces, a particular sauce perfect with a specific dish. Made of ginger, garlic, chili, vinegar, sugar, etc., they are so good that you could enjoy the fragrant rice with a sauce alone! One sauce in particular, Nampala Prig, or Chili Fish Sauce, was just out of this world, and apparently, it’s a really versatile sauce that adds relish to any dish.

To conclude, Thai cuisine is an enjoyable and exciting diversion from the usual Nepali fare (as good as it is), and wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a night out in the pleasant environs of the famous Yin Yang Restaurant to pleasure your taste buds with Chef Fi-Dang’s tasty concoctions? Friends, family, colleagues, or business associates, no matter who you are with, they would surely thank you tons for inviting them to savor the many different kinds of delectable Thai food at Yin Yang Restaurant, the place for authentic Thai cuisine.

Another reason why Yin Yang Restaurant is great for a culinary outing: there’s ample parking space. Especially of paramount importance in a place as bustling as Thamel!

Singer Falls for Dining Park’s Cuisine

Singer Jems Pradhan claims to have as much love for food as he has for music. When asked, what it is about food that he loves the

most, he replied, "The food should be tasty, and nothing would please me more than that.”

We sat on the cozy couch to taste the cuisine at the Dining Park Restaurant and Lounge Bar, located in Old Baneswar. A few minutes later, the waiter placed a series of delectable looking Indian dishes on our table. The Indian-style salad with mango was the first dish we had, and it was great refreshment from the scorching heat outside. "The fresh salad is a clear winner against the weather," said the singer.

The next dish, Chicken Jalfrezi, a spicy chicken breast with ingredients like tomatoes and chilies, was delicious. According to the chef, it goes very well with Lachha Paratha, a popular multi-layered flat bread from north India that can be served with a variety of curries, and tastes good alone,

    as well. After trying the

combination, Pradhan exclaimed, “This is the best food combination I’ve ever eaten till date.”

Maas Ka Daal, made of black lentil and cream, had an exquisite taste. “Unlike the daal we are used to, this has a traditional taste that renders the authentic taste of daal,” said Pradhan. Dipping a Lachha Partha in the daal, he added, “It tastes amazing this way too. Impressive!”

Following the meal, we made our way to the bar, one of the popular bars in the town, where the bartender placed three improvised cocktails, Blue Margarita Classic, Espresso Martini, and Mango Passion, before us. All the drinks were pleasing and gave cool relief from the summer heat. Pradhan expressed his keenness for Mango Passion, saying with a grin, “The Mango Passion has got me passionate about it. Such an irresistible taste, I can’t stop wanting more.”

Dining Park Restaurant and Lounge Bar offers a fine dining experience in an elegant ambience. It has a coffee shop, fine dining area, conference hall, garden area, and bar, which make it ideal for both confidential business meetings and quiet family gatherings, as also for romantic candle light dinners.

Jems Pradhan’s take on the restaurant Food: Fresh and delicious (5 / 5)

Ambience: Spacious and no parking hassle (5 / 5) Staff: Amazing hospitality (5 / 5)

Bar: Irresistible drinks and well-designed interior (5 / 5)About the restaurant: Excellent service and beautiful ambience

makes Dining Park Restaurant a must visit!

“High on Fun, Low on calorie” Know how arna Light Beer is made!

Beer, a beverage made with malted cereal grains, hops, and water, fermented by adding yeast, is certainly one of the most preferred beverages around the world. Over the last several years, low calorie beer has been gaining immense popularity. As the lifestyles of people are changing, they are being more health conscious. People prefer low calorie food and beverages, therefore, light beers are gaining such popularity. Even in Nepal, people are following healthy lifestyles and opting for healthy low calorie diets over rich high calorie diets.

Arna Light Beer, introduced by Yeti Brewery Pvt. Ltd., is the only beer in Nepal that is low on calorie and carbs. Arna

Light is opening up a fresh avenue for the beer drinkers in Nepal, bringing them an alternative and variety within the beer category without compromising on the taste. Arna Light 25 is the first and only low-calorie and low-carbohydrate beer to be introduced in the Nepali market. It is positioned as, “High on Fun, Low on Calories”, and comes with a clean and crisp taste that you can enjoy at any time of the day.

It is a beer with a super light body, made from exotic European hops, and has a very clean appearance. It is brewed for 25% longer time to remove extra 20% calories and 34% more carbohydrates than other mild beers, giving it a pleasant, natural finish, without compromising

The process of making beer• Beginning in the brew house, different types of malt are crushed

together to break up the grain kernels in order to extract fermentable sugars to produce a milled product called grist.

    • The grist is transferred into a mash tun, where it is mixed with heated water in a process called mash conversion. The conversion process uses natural enzymes in the malt to break the malt’s starch down into sugars.

    • The mash is then pumped into the lauter tun, where a sweet liquid (known as wort) is separated from the grain husks.

    • After boiling, the wort is transferred into a whirlpool for the wort separation stage. During this stage, any malt or hop particles are removed to leave a liquid that is ready to be cooled and fermented.

    • After fermentation, the young “green” beer needs to be matured, in order to allow full development of flavors and a smooth finish.

    • After reaching its full potential, the beer is filtered, carbonated, and transferred to the bright beer tank, where it goes through a cellaring process that takes 3-4 weeks to complete. Once completed, the beer is ready to be packaged.

Although the beer brewing process is more or less the same everywhere, the only thing that might defer are the materials and technology each company uses. Arna Light is brewed using the best raw materials and the latest technology, thus ensuring the best beer in the market.

Where are you going this Weekend?

Throughout the week, we drag ourselves out of the bed early, eat whatever is available

in the fridge, go to work, sit in front of the desk for eight hours, return home to the same dinner, and sleep. This is what everyone's routine on weekdays sounds like, which apparently calls for adults to wait for weekends, like kids. There is no better feeling than going to bed and not having to set the alarm for the next day, movie bingeing the whole day, taking some time out to cook your favorite food, and spending time with your family and friends.

Nonetheless, "Where are we going today?"is a question that pops up every weekend, but the answer is the same every time, and we end up landing up at the same place we have been going to for ages. However, if you fall among the really

weekend lovers, you definitely must have a run of ideas of what to do and where to go on weekends. Well, we have an amazing weekend experience to share with you, one that you would most definitely love to try if you are an outgoing weekender and a dedicated foodie.

Its summer time in Kathmandu, and the heat does not seem to be cooling down any time soon. And so, swimming comes first among the very few outdoor activities to do in summer, as planning for any other outdoor activity in temperatures this high is definitely a tough job.But why limit the fun just to swimming? To spice up your swimming experience, I strongly recommend the weekend brunch by the pool at Hyatt Regency Kathmandu. You can enjoy the perfect weekend brunch with family and friends, besides splashing

in the swimming pool, or lazing in

    the outdoor whirlpool.

The weekend brunch at Hyatt is a very summery

    and foodie affair. The buffet

lined up looked like a dreamland

to me. There was almost everything you could ask for a perfect brunch, a wide variety in the vegetarian and non-vegetarian buffet spreads, with a choice of Nepali, Mexican, and Italian delicacies, including barbecue, kebab stations, antipasti, et al. The major highlight was the fountain of chocolate! What more could I have asked for? Kids running in and out of the pool dipped breads in the fountain and rejoiced. There were barbeques going on, chickens being tandoor-ied, and varieties of desserts to choose from. The brunch had so many of my favorites in the menu I could not afford to miss.

Most people who came for the brunch were walk-in guests. As I have been telling from my dining experiences in hotels as such,

yes, it is everyone's cup of tea. You can easily walk in to the hotels, pay a decent amount without hurting your pockets, and acquire an experience of a lifetime. And, don't bother about the etiquettes; you learn it only after you experience it! SaturdayTime: 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.Price: Rs.2,500 per person for buffet lunch, inclusive

“And the Winner is…”L et’s begin with the guys. The first hunk to win the Manhunt International Nepal (perhaps the only better-recognized contest for men) was Prashant Tamrakar, in 1995. Since then, there have been nine winners, and they are…

Suhrid Jyoti (2003), Chandan Agrawal (2007), Rikesh Raj Shrestha (2008), Kanij Koirala (2010), Nirajan Thapa (2011), Sanish Shakya (2012), Anup Bikram Shahi (2016), and Samim Khan (2017), the reigning king.

Don’t know what all these machos are doing now, except that Prashant is teaching models and wannabe beauty queens to walk the catwalk, while Suhrid is taking Honda to newer heights. Okay, that’s it as far as hairy heroes are concerned. That there have been only nine contests in the last twenty-two years seems to prove that not many are interested in which six-foot-something alpha males gets to be the country’s top gun. Sponsor problem maybe?

But, as far as the dolls are concerned, they’re continuing to create waves (though, according to some, this year has been a relatively subdued affair). The first beauty to win the Miss Nepal contest was Ruby Rana, in 1994. Since then, there have been 22 winners, and they are…

1996-1999Sumi Khadka (1995), Poonam Ghimire (1996), Nilima Gurung (1997), Jharana Bajracahrya (1997), Niru Shrestha (1998), Shweta Singh (1999)

There were two Miss Nepal pageants in 1997, one organized by Kathmandu Jaycees (winner: Nilima), and one by The Hidden Treasure (winner: Jharana). Quite a tussle, what? Jharana was the first to participate from Nepal in Miss World. There was some talk about her height being a distinct disadvantage among all those leggy colts on the world stage, and how it made organizers here ask future Miss Nepal contestants to be at least a certain five-feet-five-or something (that’s what I heard).

But, bigger scandal in 1998! The original winner, a lanky girl named Jyoti Pradhan, went to the U.S.A. to participate in the Miss World contest, and then refused to come back! So, the first runner-up, Niru, got the crown. She also went on to become a pilot, one among the few female pilots in the country.

What are these queens up to today? Jharana continues to look ravishing in music videos and movies, and made an attempt at stardom in Bollywood. (Sumi, too, was the female lead in a couple of Nepali films in the 1990’s). Queen bee Ruby runs

a popular beauty parlor, and Shweta was CEO of The Hidden Treasure in 2015. Don’t know now.

2000-2009Usha Khadki (2000), Malvika Subba (2002), Priti Sitaula (2003), Payal Shakya (2004), Sugarika KC (2005), Sitashma Chand (2007), Zenisha Moktan (2009)

2001 was a bad year, what with the royal massacre and all, so no nothing; but what happened in 2006 and 2008? It was all those ultra-feminists, associated with the then deadly Maoists, who threatened dire consequences for ‘objectifying’ women, so no Miss Nepal contest (or any other pageants, either!).

Here’s an update on these queens: Usha runs a boutique, and is also seen frequently on TV promoting milk, ghee, noodles, etc. Malvika is doing this and that—magazines, musicals, movies, etc., and Zenisha married a tycoon’s son last year (or was it the year before that?) and is a director in their booming business organization.

2010-2017Sadichha Shrestha (2010), Malina Joshi (2011), Shristi Shrestha (2012), Ishani Shrestha (2013), Subin Limbu (2014), Evana Manandhar (2015), Asmi Shrestha (2016), Nikita Chandak (2017).

The decade of the Newari queens—six out of eight! And, this year, history has been made by a Nepali Marwari girl winning the coveted crown for the first time. Great going!

Shristi and Ishani made headlines at their respective Miss World’s. The former was the first from Nepal to win a place in the top twenty finalists, along with a place in the top ten list of three subtitles (including Top 10 Beach Beauty!). Ishani became the first Nepali beauty to actually win a subtitle (Beauty with a Purpose), and then reached the top ten at Miss World. Wow!

So, what are these beauties up to today? Sadichha is seen regularly in commercials, she’s pretty popular as an endorser of all sorts of goods and services. Malina is married to Anup B Shahi, of Manhunt International 2016 fame, and has done a couple of films. Evana tied the knot recently. That’s all I know.

So, friends, hope this has been enjoyable reading to you, and improved your knowledge somewhat! Now, whether beauty pageants is an issue that matters, or should matter, is a debatable subject, but seeing as to how everything else (politics, environment, education, and so on) are so damn serious stuff, talking sometimes about the lighter stuff should be a welcome blessing. A real stress reliever.

Project Noah, the BettermeNt of humaNity

roughly one in ten people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Climate change threatens to exacerbate this problem by fuelling drought in vulnerable regions. At present, the planet’s population is set to grow substantially and global temperatures to rise steadily. This adds further uncertainty to the supply of fresh water. This is where Project Noah’s mission to supply clean drinking water to the underprivileged communities comes into action.

Project Noah started in 2013 with seed capital from the Rockefeller Foundation, Cisco Systems Foundation and three individual philanthropists continuing the founders’ vision. Their goal is to embark on a social mission to drive

change on a global scale by applying new, innovative thinking to formulate a solution for the underprivileged, excluded and impoverished people of the world.

Project Noah has been involved in various community projects in Nepal, Thailand and in Cambodia. In Nepal they are investing USD $500 000 in building Children's Home for the orphanages, supplying clean water filter systems to the underprivileged community all over Nepal. On 6th May 2017 Project Noah opened the water filter system in Gorkaneshwar, Jorpati, Nepal for about 200 families, another clean water project on 7th May in Padmai Ga shall Choiling School in Gorkanath Nepal. Our aim is to build 100 water filter systems in Nepal.

Project Noah's goal is to use the latest technology to extract water from the atmosphere to provide clean drinking water in remote villages where water is a scarce resource. Turbine or wind powered water extraction from atmosphere can supply about 11 gallons of water per day while solar powered system can supply about 10 gallons per day, depending on the humidity.

More than 600 million people lack regular access to clean drinking water on a daily basis and by 2030, half of humanity will live in areas where the demand for water outstrips the available supply. Project Noah is continually innovating and formulating a solution for the underprivileged, excluded and impoverished people of the world.

    Tangal, Where Tradition Meets Modernity

    TexT By: PrAmiTA ShreSThA

The vibrant and lively Tangal, located in the heart of Kathmandu, covers the area from Tangal Ganesh to the Bhatbhateni Temple. The place holds both cultural and historical significance, which however is not apparent these days, owing to urbanization. Nevertheless, the area has thrived so much in the past decade that it has become one

of the lifestyle hubs in the capital. From posh clothing stores to fine dining, and cultural monuments to the city’s only underground club, this place has so much to offer. Tangal is an example of tradition meeting modernity, and how they have merged together to give this place its vibrant essence. We have picked some of the major attractions to help you explore and know the place a little better.

    Tangalwood

This uniquely traditional, yet contemporary, estate of heritage and culture is nestled among tall trees and a serene ambience. It is the place to make a beeline for if you are looking for somewhere to enjoy good food, good music, and a calm environment with your loved ones. From boutique hotels to the finest Nepali culinary experiences, your favorite bands playing live, and an action-ready club, Tangalwood has everything covered for its guests for a memorable experience to take back. The outlets inside Tangalwood are:1. Tangalwood Boutique Hotel2. Nilgiri Thakali Delight3. Attic Restaurant and Bar4. Calm Restaurant and Bar5. 25 Hours Club and Live Venue6. Tangalwood Galleria

    Gahana Pokhari

According to the locals, this pond was initially known as Gahana Paune Pokhari, which translates to, the pond of jewels. This pond holds a great religious significance to the locals, who carry the chariot of Tundaldevi on their shoulders and search for her lost jewelry during the traditional "Gahana Khojne Jatra" festival in April every year. If you are around the pond next time, good luck on finding some jewels!

    Bhatbhateni Temple

Bhatbhateni Temple's locality is officially known as Tangal, however, this place is well known after the name Bhatbhateni itself. The deity figures inside the temple are suspended from the ceiling, because it is believed that they are so pious that they cannot step on the ground. People from both Hindu and Buddhist communities worship Bhatbhateni. The same name was adopted by one of the most popular department stores here, Bhatbhateni Super Market, another major attraction of this place.

    Dalle

Dalle borrows its name from dalle khursani, the hottest chili of Nepal. If you are a hardcore momo lover and always hungry, Dalle is the place to go to! It, along with its other outlets in Kathmandu, are popular for momos. The food served is fresh and hygienic. Among the must-tries of this eatery is the pork momo. Utterly scrumptious!

    Swornim Boutique hotel

Hotel Swornim Boutique is a Newari-themed boutique hotel in Kathmandu offering the best in modern amenities with traditional Nepalese hospitality. The hotel has been designed keeping in mind the owner's Newari heritage and culture. Decor

items have been sourced locally to support and highlight the craftsmanship of local artisans. Hand-embroidered furnishings, paintings, and custom accessories offer great visual appeal. Swornim offers world-class facilities, including great dining in its multi-cuisine Kabab Village Restaurant & Bar.

    Tangal Ganesh

Tangal is named after Lord Tangal Ganesh. If you have been through the Tangal lane, you must have noticed that this temple is located right on the main road. It is believed that the reason behind the temple being onthe main road is because the deity was so powerful that even the road department could not shift or destroy it, and even today, the temple remains in its place unbothered, with passersby bowing down to the lord of good luck and prosperity.

    roadhouse Café

Roadhouse Café is mainly popular forits signature wood-fired pizzas. Located right across the Bhatbhateni Temple, the restaurant's windows face the busy streets of Bhatbhateni, while the interior has mosaic running all over its walls, giving a European touch to the ambience. It is a must-visit place when you are anywhere around Tangal, and looking for some of the best pizzas in town.
