Pronunciation Guide and Flashpoints for English Speakers

The International Phonetic Alphabet was launched in 1888 in England by Henry Sweet andElmer Wiggins, founders of the International Phonetic Association. The International Phonetic

Alphabet is an alphabetic system of notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet with

borrowings if the Latin alphabet does not contain the sound. The beauty of the IPA is that it is

100% phonetic, while the English alphabet (though derived from the Latin alphabet) is only 60%

phonetic, making pronunciation chancy. The best transliteration schemes are also hit and miss.Using the pronunciation, one symbol represents one sound. The consonants are the most stable

Shiphrah and the other had the name of Puah;

16and he said, "When you help the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon thebirthstool, if they have a son, then you shall put him to death; but if they have a daughter,

then she shall live."

19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women do not behave as the Egyptian

women; for they have vigor and give birth before the midwife can get to them."

15When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence

The Burning Bush

1Now Moses pastured the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led theflock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

4When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the

of Egypt and you will say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us.

So now, please, let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice

to the LORD our God.'

of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; and you will put them on your sons and

daughters. Thus you will plunder the Egyptians."

1Then Moses said, "What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say,

'The LORD has not appeared to you.'"

8"If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe the witness

of the last sign.

nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I have slowness of

14Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, "How about your brother

Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he comes out to

meet you; when he sees you, he will feel glad in his heart.

you will serve as God to him.

17"You shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall perform the signs."

Then Moses departed and returned to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, "Please, let mego, that I may return to my brethren who dwell in Egypt, and see if they still live." AndJethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."

21The LORD said to Moses, "When you go back to Egypt see that you perform before Pharaoh

all the wonders which I have put in your power; but I will harden his heart so that he will

not let the people go.

25Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and threw it at Moses' feet, and she

said, "You have indeed become a bridegroom of blood to me."

27Now the LORD said to Aaron, "Go to meet Moses in the wilderness " So he went and methim at the mountain of God and kissed him.

Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD with which He had sent him, and all the signsthat He had commanded him to do.

29Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the sons of Israel;

30and Aaron spoke all the words which the LORD had spoken to Moses He then performed the

signs in the sight of the people.

31So the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had concerned Himself aboutthe sons of Israel and that He had seen their affliction, then they bowed low and

worshiped.

6So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters over the people and their foremen,

saying,

7"You will no longer give the people straw to make brick as previously; let them go and gatherstraw for themselves.

8"But the quota of bricks which they made previously, you shall impose on them; you will notreduce any of it. Because they have become lazy, therefore they cry out, 'Let us go and

sacrifice to our God.'

10So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying,

"Thus says Pharaoh, 'I will not give you any straw.

11 'You go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but we will reduce none ofyour labor.'"

13The taskmasters pressed them, saying, "Complete your work quota, your daily amount, just

as when you had straw."

14Moreover, the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them,

beat them and asked, "Why have you not completed your required amount either

yesterday or today in making brick as previously?"

of Pharaoh They demanded Why not have you fulfilled your task

15Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you

deal this way with your servants?

16"No straw will come to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, 'Make bricks!' And

behold, your servants have received beatings; but not because of any fault of your own

18"So go now and work; for you will receive no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of

bricks."

19The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they had fallen into trouble because theirtaskmasters told them, "You must not reduce your daily amount of bricks."

21 They said to them, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you, for you have made us

22Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have You brought harm to this

people? Why did You ever send me?

6"Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, 'I proclaim the LORD, and I will bring you out from

under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage I will also

redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

7'Then I will take you for My people, and I will serve as your God; and you shall know that I

proclaim myself the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of

the Egyptians.

15"Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the water, and station yourself to meet him

serpent.

16"You shall say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, "Let My

people go, that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened

until now."
