E-Prime consists of a paraphrase in which we have endeavored to replace all “to be” verbs (is,

are, were, was, etc.) with concrete active verbs, eliminating the “is of identity” (instead of “John

is a teacher” we use “John teaches”), the “is of predication” (instead of “The apple is sweet” we

use “The apple tastes sweet”), as well as the passive voice and phantom subjects (instead of

“Blessed is the man” we use “God blesses the man”). By performing these linguistic procedures,

we have hoped to create a crisp, direct, and sparkling document.

Pronunciation Guide and Flashpoints for English Speakers

The International Phonetic Alphabet was launched in 1888 in England by Henry Sweet and

Elmer Wiggins, founders of the International Phonetic Association. The International Phonetic

Alphabet is an alphabetic system of notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet with

borrowings if the Latin alphabet does not contain the sound. The beauty of the IPA is that it is

100% phonetic, while the English alphabet (though derived from the Latin alphabet) is only 60%

phonetic, making pronunciation chancy. The best transliteration schemes are also hit and miss.

Using the pronunciation, one symbol represents one sound. The consonants are the most stable

elements of the language, but the violent vowels and the diabolical diphthongs will cause trouble

continually. Consequently, here are the potential flashpoints that may up-end English speakers as

they try to negotiate the pronunciation of the Interlinear Greek and Hebrew texts.

an almond tree."

14Then the LORD said to me, “Out of the north the evil will break forth on all the inhabitants of the

5Thus says the LORD, "What injustice did your fathers find in Me, that they went far from Me, walkedafter emptiness and became empty?

11"Has a nation changed gods when they did not even prove gods? But My people have changed their

glory for that which does not profit.

12"Feel amazement, O heavens, at this, and shudder, become very desolate," declares the LORD.

13"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to

22"Although you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your iniquity has come beforeMe," declares the Lord GOD.

For though you wash with niter and take you much to soap is marked

23"How can you say, 'I have not defiled myself, I have not gone after the Baals'? Look at your way in

the valley! Know what you have done! You resemble a swift young camel entangling her ways,

24A wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness that sniffs the wind in her passion. In the time of herheat who can turn her away? All who seek her will not become weary; In her month they will findher.

become weary in her month they shall find.

25"Keep your feet from becoming unshod and your throat from thirst; But you said, 'I find ithopeless! No! For I have loved strangers, and after them I will walk.'

29"Why do you contend with Me? You have all transgressed against Me," declares the LORD.

Why will you plead with Me? You have all have transgressed in said the LORD.

30"In vain I have struck your sons; They accepted no chastening. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.

31"O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I appeared a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thickdarkness? Why do My people say, we feel free to roam; We will no longer come to You'?

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2"Stand in the gate of the LORD'S house and proclaim there this word and say, 'Hear the word of theLORD, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship the LORD!'"

3Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let youdwell in this place.

5"For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a man and hisneighbor,

ta-asu mi ʃ pat ben i ʃ uven re-ehuexecute judgment between a man and between his neighbor .

6if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place,

nor walk after other gods to your own ruin,

ger jatom və-almana lo ta-a ʃ oku vədam nakithe stranger the fatherless and the widow not you oppress and blood innocent
