TheEarthlyRewardsforChristians

Jesusansweredandsaid tohim, “Ifanyone lovesMe,hewill keepMyword;andMyFatherwill lovehim,andWewill come tohimandmakeOurabodewithhim(John14:23).

Idonotaskonbehalfof thesealone,but for thosealsowhobelieve inMethroughtheirword;21thattheymayallbeone;evenasYou,Father,areinMeandIinYou,thattheyalsomaybeinUs,sothattheworldmaybelieve that You sentMe.The glory which You have givenMe I havegiventothem,thattheymaybeone, justasWeareone;I in themandYou inMe, that theymay be perfected in unity, so that theworldmayknow that You sentMe, and loved them, even as You have lovedMe(John17:20-23).

Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,ifanyonekeepsMywordhewillneverseedeath(John8:51).

TheHeavenlyRewardsforChristians

You(theapostles)arethosewhohavestoodbyMeinMytrials;andjustasMyFatherhasgrantedMeakingdom, Igrantyou thatyoumayeatanddrinkatMytableinMykingdom,andyouwillsitonthrones judgingthetwelvetribesofIsrael(Luke22:28-30).

Aftera longtimethe lordof thoseservantscometh,andreckonethwiththem.Andsohe thathadreceived five talentscameandbroughtotherfivetalents,saying,Lord,thoudeliveredstuntomefivetalents:behold,Ihavegainedbesidethemfivetalentsmore.Hislordsaiduntohim,Welldone, thougoodand faithfulservant: thouhastbeen faithfulovera fewthings,Iwillmaketheerulerovermanythings:enterthouintothejoyofthylord(Matthew25:21–KJV).

Hewhoovercomes,andhewhokeepsMydeedsuntiltheend,tohimIwillgiveauthorityover thenations;andheshall rule themwitharodofiron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also havereceivedauthorityfromMyFather(Revelation2:26-27).

Hewhoovercomes,IwillgranttohimtositdownwithMeonMythrone,as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.(Revelation3:21).

All thenationswill begatheredbeforeHim;andHewill separate themfromoneanother,astheshepherdseparatesthesheepfromthegoats;andHewillput thesheeponHisright,andthegoatsonthe left. “ThentheKingwillsaytothoseonHisright,‘Come,youwhoareblessedofMyFather, inherit thekingdomprepared for you from the foundationof theworld(Matthew25:32-34).

Donotbeafraid,littleflock,foryourFatherhaschosengladlytogiveyouthekingdom(Luke12:32).

Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of theirFather.Hewhohasearslethimhear(Matthew13:43).

WhatKnowledgeShouldChristiansBeSharingwithOthers?

Gothereforeandmakedisciplesofallthenations,baptizingtheminthename of the Father and theSon and theHolySpirit, teaching them toobserveallthatIcommandedyou;andlo,Iamwithyoualways,eventotheendoftheage”(Matthew28:19-20).

WhoShouldChristiansFollowandLearnFrom?

It isthespirit thatgiveth life; thefleshprofitethnothing: thewordsthat I(Jesus)havespokentoyouarespiritandarelife(John6:63–KJV).

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If youcontinue inMyword, then you are truly disciples ofMine; and youwillknowthetruth,andthetruthwillmakeyoufree”(John8:31-32).

MysheephearMyvoice,andIknowthem,andtheyfollowMe;andIgiveeternal life to them, and theywill never perish; and no onewill snatchthemoutofMyhand.MyFather,whohasgiven themtoMe, isgreaterthanall;andnooneisabletosnatchthemoutoftheFather’shand(John10:27-29).

Ihaveothersheep(Gentiles),whicharenotofthisfold(theJews);Imustbringthemalso,andtheywillhearMyvoice;andtheywillbecomeoneflockwithoneshepherd(John10:16).

Hewhobelieves in theSonhaseternal life;buthewhodoesnotobeythe Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John3:36).

Whenhe(Christ)putsforthallhisown,hegoesaheadofthem,andthesheep follow him because they knowhis voice.A stranger they simplywillnotfollow,butwillfleefromhim,becausetheydonotknowthevoiceofstrangers(John10:4-5).

Truly, truly, I (Jesus) say to you,hewho hearsMyword, and believesHimwhosentMe,haseternallife,anddoesnotcomeintojudgment,buthaspassedoutofdeathintolife(John5:24).

I(Jesus)amthedoor;ifanyoneentersthroughMe,hewillbesaved,andwillgoinandoutandfindpasture(John10:9).

Jesusansweredandsaid tohim, “Ifanyone lovesMe,hewill keepMyword;andMyFatherwill lovehim,andWewillcome tohimandmakeOurabodewithhim”(John14:23).

SoJesusansweredthemandsaid,“MyteachingisnotMine,butHiswhosentMe(GodtheFather)(John7:16).

AndhewhodoesnottakehiscrossandfollowafterMeisnotworthyof

Me(Matthew10:38).

CometoMe(Jesus),allwhoarewearyandheavy-laden,andIwillgiveyourest.TakeMyyokeuponyouandlearnfromMe,forIamgentleandhumbleinheart,andyouwillfindrestforyoursouls.ForMyyokeiseasyandMyburdenislight(Matthew11:28-30).

DidJesusAuthorizePastorsandSpiritualShepherds?

Butyouarenottobecalled‘Rabbi’(atitleusedbytheJewstoaddresstheir religious teachers) for you have one Teacher, and you are allbrothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have oneFather, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors(teachers),foryouhaveoneInstructor,theMessiah(Matthew23:8-10).

Ihaveothersheepthatarenotofthissheeppen.Imustbringthemalso.They toowill listen tomy voice, and there shall be one flock and oneshepherd(John10:16).

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of theGentileslorditoverthem,andtheirhighofficialsexerciseauthorityoverthem.Notsowithyou. Instead,whoeverwants tobecomegreatamongyoumustbeyourservant(Greek:anattendantwhowaitsontables),andwhoeverwantstobefirstmustbeyourslave—justastheSonofMandidnotcometobeserved,buttoserve,andtogivehislifeasaransomformany”(Matthew20:25-28).

ButJesuscalledthem(theapostles)toHimselfandsaid,“YouknowthattherulersoftheGentileslorditoverthem,andtheirgreatmenexerciseauthorityoverthem.Itisnotthiswayamongyou,butwhoeverwishestobecomegreatamongyoushallbeyourservant,andwhoeverwishestobefirstamongyoushallbeyourslave(Matthew20:25-27).

ShouldChristiansAcceptMoneyforPreaching?

No servant can serve twomasters, for either hewill hate the one andlove theother, or hewill bedevoted to theoneanddespise theother.YoucannotserveGodandmoney(Luke16:13–KJV).

“Iam thegoodshepherd; thegoodshepherd laysdownHis life for thesheep.He who is a hired hand (Greek: a hired employee), and not ashepherd,whoisnottheownerofthesheep,seesthewolfcoming,andleaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scattersthem.Hefleesbecausehe isahiredhandand isnotconcernedaboutthesheep”(John10:11-13).

“Bewareofthefalseprophets,whocometoyouinsheep’sclothing,butinwardly (Greek ἔσω: on the inside) are ravenous wolves (Greek:aggressivelygreedyformoney)”(Matthew7:15).

“Behold,Isendyououtassheepinthemidstofwolves;sobeshrewdasserpentsandinnocentasdoves”(Matthew10:16).

And to thosewhowere selling the doves (for offerings)He said, “Takethesethingsaway;stopmakingMyFather’shouseaplaceofbusiness(Greek:aplacewheremoneyistradedforaproduct)”(John2:16).

ShouldChristiansPayTithesandOfferings?

“Whatdoyouthink,Simon?Fromwhomdothekingsoftheearthcollectcustomsorpoll-tax,fromtheirsonsorfromstrangers?”WhenPetersaid,“Fromstrangers,”Jesussaidtohim,“Thenthesons(ofGod)areexempt”(lastpartofMatthew17:25andverse26).

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say,“Come.”Andlettheonewhoisthirstycome;lettheonewhowishestakethewateroflifewithoutcost(Greek:forfree)(Revelation22:17).

AndJesusenteredthetempleanddroveoutall thosewhowerebuyingand selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangersandtheseatsofthosewhoweresellingdoves.AndHe*saidtothem,“Itiswritten,‘Myhouseshallbecalledahouseofprayer’;butyouaremakingitarobbers’den”(Matthew21:12-13).

Author’s note: Jesus never forbid taking up a collection to defray thecostsofmaintainingaChristianmeetingplace.ButwhenChristiansdoso, they should not pretend they are “offering up” theirmoney to God.Andweshouldnote that throughout theentireNewTestament, there isnotasingleexampleofChristianstakingupmonetary“offeringstoGod”to support local church operations and pay ministerial salaries (seediscussionattheendofthisbookforanexplanationofIICorinthians9:6-7).

JesusKnowstheChristianHypocritesWhoDisobeyHim

WhydoyoucallMe,‘Lord,Lord,’anddonotdowhatIsay?(Luke6:46).

I have come inMyFather’s name, and youdonot receiveMe; (but) ifanothercomesinhisownname,youwillreceivehim(John5:43).

A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master(Matthew10:24).

WhoisGodSaving?

Jesus thensaid to them, “Truly, truly, I say toyou, it isnotMoseswhohasgivenyouthebreadoutofheaven,butitisMyFatherwhogivesyouthetruebreadoutofheaven.ForthebreadofGodisthatwhichcomesdownoutofheaven,andgiveslifetotheworld.”(John6:32-33).

IfanyonehearsMysayingsanddoesnotkeepthem,Idonotjudgehim;forIdidnotcometojudgetheworld,buttosavetheworld(John12:47).

ForGod so loved theworld, thatHe gaveHis only begottenSon, thatwhoeverbelieves inHimshallnotperish,buthaveeternal life.ForGoddidnotsendtheSonintotheworldtojudgetheworld,butthattheworldmightbesavedthroughHim(John3:16-17).

AndI, ifIamliftedupfromtheearth,willdrawallmentoMyself”(John12:32).

WhatWasChrist’sGospelMessage?

JesuswasgoingthroughoutallGalilee,teachingintheirsynagoguesandproclaimingthegospelofthekingdom,andhealingeverykindofdiseaseandeverykindofsicknessamongthepeople(Matthew4:23).

Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in theirsynagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healingeverykindofdiseaseandeverykindofsickness(Matthew9:35).

Nowafter John had been taken into custody, Jesus came intoGalilee,preachingthegospelofGod,andsaying, “The time is fulfilled,and thekingdomofGodisathand;repentandbelieveinthegospel”(Mark1:14-15).

FromthattimeJesusbegantopreachandsay,“Repent,forthekingdomofheavenisathand”(Matthew4:17).

God’sJudgment

FornoteventheFatherjudgesanyone,butHehasgivenalljudgmenttotheSon(John5:22).

Yejudgeaftertheflesh;Ijudgenoman(John8:15—KJV).

IfanyonehearsMysayingsanddoesnotkeepthem,Idonotjudgehim;for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He whorejectsMeanddoesnot receiveMysayings,hasonewho judgeshim;thewordIspokeiswhatwilljudgehimatthelastday.(John12:47-48).

Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall beforgivenuntomen:buttheblasphemyagainsttheHolyGhostshallnotbeforgivenuntomen(Matthew12:31—KJV).

IfanyonehearsMysayingsanddoesnotkeepthem,Idonotjudgehim;forIdidnotcometojudgetheworld,buttosavetheworld(John12:47—KJV).

But I say to you, love your enemiesandpray for thosewhopersecuteyou,so that youmaybe sonsof yourFatherwho is inheaven; forHecausesHissun to riseon theeviland thegood,andsendsrainon therighteousandtheunrighteous(Matthew5:44-45).

JesusonForgiveness

ThenPetercameandsaidtoHim,“Lord,howoftenshallmybrothersinagainstmeandIforgivehim?Uptoseventimes?”Jesussaidtohim,“Ido not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven”(Matthew18:21-22).

DidJesusBelieveinEternalPunishmentinHell?

Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported toHim about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with theirsacrifices.AndJesussaidtothem,“DoyousupposethattheseGalileansweregreatersinnersthanallotherGalileansbecausetheysufferedthisfate? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish(Luke13:1-3).

TheSecondComingofChrist

Butwhenever theypersecuteyou inonecity, flee to thenext; for truly Isaytoyou,you(thepeopletowhichJesuswasspeaking)willnot finishgoing through thecitiesof Israeluntil theSonofMancomes (Matthew10:23).

But when you (the people to which Jesus was speaking) see theabominationofdesolationstandingwhereitshouldnotbe(letthereaderunderstand), then those who are in Judea (the area surroundingJerusalem)mustfleetothemountains(Mark13:14).

Butwhenyou(thepeopletowhichJesuswasspeaking)seeJerusalemsurroundedbyarmies, then recognize thatherdesolation isnear.ThenthosewhoareinJudeamustfleetothemountains,andthosewhoareinthemidstofthecitymust leave,andthosewhoareinthecountrymustnot enter the city; because these are days of vengeance, so that allthingswhicharewrittenwillbefulfilled.Woetothosewhoarepregnantandtothosewhoarenursingbabiesinthosedays;fortherewillbegreatdistressuponthelandandwrathtothispeople(Luke21:20-23).

Butwhenthesethingsbegintotakeplace,straightenupandliftupyourheads(theheadsofthepeopletowhichJesuswasspeaking),becauseyourredemptionisdrawingnear(Luke21:28).

Butkeeponthealertatall times,prayingthatyou (thepeople towhichJesuswasspeaking)mayhavestrength toescapeall these things thatare about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man (Luke21:36).

In Mark 8:34, Jesus called His disciples and various other peopletogethertospeakuntothem.AndtheninMark9:1,weread:AndJesuswassayingtothem,“TrulyIsaytoyou,therearesomeofthosewhoarestandingherewhowillnottastedeathuntiltheyseethekingdomofGodafterithascomewithpower.”

FortheSonofManisgoingtocome in thegloryofHisFatherwithHisangels,andwillthenrepayeverymanaccordingtohisdeeds.TrulyIsaytoyou,therearesomeofthosewhoarestandingherewhowillnottastedeathuntil they see theSon ofMan coming inHis kingdom” (Matthew

16:27-28).

ButJesuskeptsilent.And thehighpriestsaid toHim, “IadjureYoubythe livingGod, thatYou tell uswhetherYou are theChrist, theSon ofGod.” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tellyou,hereafter youwill see the Son ofMan sitting at the right hand ofPower,andcomingonthecloudsofheaven”(Matthew26:63-64).

AndthenthesignoftheSonofManwillappearinthesky,andthenallthe tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Mancomingonthecloudsoftheskywithpowerandgreatglory.AndHewillsendforthHisangelswithagreat trumpetandtheywillgather togetherHiselectfromthefourwinds,fromoneendoftheskytotheother.Nowlearntheparablefromthefigtree:whenitsbranchhasalreadybecometenderandputsforth its leaves,youknowthatsummerisnear;so,youtoo,whenyouseeallthesethings,recognizethatHeisnear,rightatthedoor.TrulyIsaytoyou,thisgenerationwillnotpassawayuntilallthesethingstakeplace(Matthew24:30-34).

“Therefore,behold,Iamsendingyou(theJews)prophetsandwisemenandscribes;someofthemyouwillkillandcrucify,andsomeofthemyouwillscourgeinyoursynagogues,andpersecutefromcitytocity,sothatuponyoumayfalltheguiltofalltherighteousbloodshedonearth,fromthe blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son ofBerechiah,whomyoumurderedbetweenthetempleandthealtar.TrulyIsay to you, all these things will come upon this generation” (Matthew23:34-36).

“Thentheywill see theSonofMancoming in cloudswithgreat powerandglory.AndthenHewillsendforththeangels,andwillgathertogetherHis elect from the fourwinds, from the farthest endof the earth to thefarthestendofheaven.Nowlearntheparablefromthefigtree:whenitsbranchhasalreadybecome tenderandputs forth its leaves, youknowthat summer is near. Even so, you too, when you see these thingshappening,recognizethatHeisnear,rightatthedoor.TrulyIsaytoyou,thisgenerationwillnotpassawayuntilallthesethingstakeplace(Mark13:26-30).

ThenHe told themaparable: “Behold the fig treeandall the trees;assoon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that

summerisnownear.Soyoualso,whenyouseethesethingshappening,recognize that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, thisgenerationwillnotpassawayuntilallthingstakeplace(Luke21:29-32).

DiscussiononIICorinthians9:6-7

PreachersoftenmentionIICorinthians9:6-7asjustificationforcollectingmonetaryofferingsfromChristians.Butweneedtoexaminethisverse,toseeifitreallystateswhatpreachersclaim:

NowthisIsay,hewhosowssparinglywillalsoreapsparingly,andhewhosowsbountifullywillalsoreapbountifully.Eachonemustdojust as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or undercompulsion,forGodlovesacheerfulgiver(IICorinthians9:6-7).

Naturally, Christians want God to view them as “cheerful givers.” Butpreachers alwaysmanage to leave out the first part of this chapter, inwhichPaulexplainshewasaskingfordonationstohelppoorChristians—notfundstosupportchurchorganizationsandministerialsalaries.

Solet’sreadIICorinthians9:1,theversethatintroducesPaul’ssubject:

Foritissuperfluousformetowritetoyouaboutthisministrytothesaints…

As you can see, Paul’s subject was a specific ministry for the saints(Christian brethren). And what was this ministry? Theologian John Gillexplains:

“It looks at first sight as if the apostle was entering upon a newsubject, thoughbywhat follows it appears tobe the same; for by‘ministering to the saints’, he does not mean the ministry of theGospel to them;nor thatmutual assistancemembersof churchesaretogiveeachother;buteitherthefellowshipofministeringtothesaints, which the churches had entreated him, and his fellowministers, to take upon them, namely, to take the charge of theircollections,anddistribute themto thepoorsaintsatJerusalem;orratherthesecollectionsthemselves,andtheirliberalityinthem:withrespecttowhichhesays.”

AtthetimePaulwroteIICorinthians,theJerusalembrethrenwereinthemidst of a severe famine. So Paul asked the assembly to take up agenerouscollectiontohelpthesebrethren.

Therefore, IICorinthians9hasnothing todowith takingupofferings to

Godorcollectingmoneyforchurches.Andifyourpreacher isusingthispassageforthosepurposes,heorsheismisrepresentingtheScriptures.
