Meet the ICCC Language School Teachers!
Voted Houston’s Best Italian Language School, the
ICCC teachers are highly qualified native speakers with
diverse professional backgrounds and experiences. They
teach a variety of different courses to meet the needs of
language learners at all levels.
Michela Diotallevi
Michela was born in Pesaro,
Italy. After completing her
degree in arts, she moved to
Rome where she worked as a
social worker in an institute for
single mothers and girls with
behavioral disorders. While
working for this institute, she
also traveled to Kenya for a missionary trip to different
hospitals. Michela has been living in Houston for 4 years,
and she is currently teaching an Italian language class for
kids, private conversational classes, and Italian for
Travelers classes.
Federica Galli
Federica was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy. She is an Italian
native speaker with both a marketing / communication
degree and an agricultural engineering degree. While in
Italy, she worked as a middle and high school teacher, as a
freelance journalist, and as a translator (mainly English to
Italian). In 2008, she moved to Northern Europe and
began her professional
adventure in the food industry.
In 2014, Federica followed her
husband to the United States,
first to Washington D.C. and
later to Houston, where she
now enjoys teaching both Italian
language and Italian culture to
students of all ages.
Morena Schiavone
Morena was born in Abruzzo,
precisely in Loreto Aprutino, a
small and cozy town. She studied
in Bologna where she obtained
her bachelor’s degree in law and
became a civil lawyer. She
started teaching Italian at the
ICCC in 2014 after moving to Houston. Morena teaches
advanced groups (levels B1-B2 and C1-C2), and classes for
kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. She loves teaching
and thinks it is a beautiful cultural and human exchange.
Matteo Alessandri
Matteo was born and raised in the city of Rome, Italy. An Italian native speaker, he is also fluent in English, and he has a good knowledge of Spanish. He holds a degree in education and development from La Sapienza - University of Rome; focusing on human resources and training, adult
education, and teaching Italian as a second language. While in Italy, Matteo worked in the film industry and had the opportunity to work in costumes for many Italian and international movies, TV shows and plays. Fun fact: He met and worked with Sophia Loren. He moved to
Houston, Texas in 2013 and has taken several management roles in the food industry He likes art, coffee, biking, nature, road tripping, dogs, and juggling.
Cristina Ottonello Dacquino
Cristina was born in Savona in Liguria, Italy, where she
lived until 1986 when the entire family moved to the
United Kingdom. In 1990 the family moved to New York
and finally to Houston in 1995. She started teaching Italian
classes for children in 1996 at the ICCC, and three years
later began teaching Italian classes for adults. For more
than 20 years, Cristina has taught Italian to hundreds of
students from beginners to
advance levels, developing
excellent teaching skills. She is
very dedicated to teaching and
prepares her lessons carefully,
providing her students with a
lot of material and ideas,
through conversation, reading
and grammar.

La Piccola Cucina
La Piccola Cucina is a hands-on cultural culinary experience for children aged 3-12 years old. Children will wear chef aprons and toques and learn basic Italian language, metric system and culture while preparing authentic Italian cuisine. Our little chefs will be preparing palline al cioccolato e cocco, rich and flavorful chocolate truffles, decorated with shredded coconut and sprinkles.
Special Demo on Homemade Fresh Mozzarella
Join us on October 28, 2016, for an evening
discovering the traditions of regional cheese making in
Italy. The mozzarella making lecture and demo will be
guided by Andrea Cudin, founder of Lira Rossa Artisan
Cheese, a family owned Italian cheese making company
located at the Four E Dairy in Moulton, TX. Andrea and
Jillian Cudin began their cheese making venture in 2012
after moving back to Texas from Andrea's home region of
Friuli in Italy. He was unable to find the beloved cheeses
he had grown up with as a staple on his family's table, so
he decided to travel home and study cheese
making. After many years of research and learning Lira
Rossa was able to open its doors in August 2016 providing
many delicious Texas made cheeses using the Italian
tradition. Guests will be able to sample freshly made
mozzarella. Other cheeses will be available for purchase at
the event.
ICCC Wine Event
You can’t miss this tasty evening of wine samples from
the region of Veneto along with some scrumptious bites.
Lecture and presentation by Pierangelo Tommasi, our
wine provider for this tasting from Tommasi Family
Estates in Verona, Italy, in collaboration with Borgo Food
Station.
Come Wine with Us is a series of educational wine
tastings to promote and encourage the Italian “Eno-
gastronomic” tourism.
Exchange Students from China Get a Taste of Italy while in Houston
This summer, students from the Mingxing Boarding School in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, China, participated in an exchange program and visit to America. While in Houston, the students visited museums and a summer program to spend the day with American students and later that week they were introduced to the amazing culinary culture Houston has to offer. Of all the restaurants the students went to, the original Carrabba’s on Kirby Drive was the most talked about. Apart from a great custom menu, the manager and staff also sang an Italian version of the birthday song for the students who were born in July. The students had a great time learning about traditional Italian foods and its influence in American cuisine. It was like a mini-trip to Italy during their tour of America.

Profondo Rosso (1975) Dario Argento October 25, 2016 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. ICCC Information and RSVP: [email protected]
Known as the Italian king of the giallo film genre
(murder mystery with horror elements), Dario Argento’s
career spans over fifty years. After he collaborated as a
screenwriter with Bernardo Bertolucci for Sergio Leone’s
masterpiece, Once Upon a Time in the West, Argento
quickly turned his complete focus on directing the films
that have made him so famous. Profondo Rosso (Deep
Red) is considered by many critics to be one of the best
giallo films ever made. Argento is not as concerned with
plot in his films, but giallo enthusiasts rarely mind, as they
become engrossed in the stunning and nightmarishly
gruesome images. The great American horror director
John Carpenter once said that Argento, whom he credits
partly for the inspiration of his Halloween films
soundtrack, makes death look disturbingly beautiful with
his attention to color and details. Profondo Rosso has all
these elements, along with a famous and chilling sound
track and a surprise reference to the American painter
Edward Hopper. Join us for this special evening!
Please note: this film contains graphic violence and is
NOT appropriate for anyone under 18 years of age.

Earthquake Devastates Central Italy, Hundreds Dead
On Wednesday, August 24, 2016, a large part of
central Italy was struck by a devastating earthquake,
claiming hundreds of lives and leaving survivors trapped
under the rubble. Our friends and partners at the National
Italian American Foundation (NIAF), located in
Washington D.C., are raising funds to provide relief for the
victims affected by this tragic disaster and help with the
rebuilding process of the several towns that were
devastated.
The ICCC supports NIAF’s Italian American Relief Fund,
as well as the Italian Red Cross’s* appeal for donations.
We hope you will be a part of either one of these relief
efforts, and would like to ask you to help in ANY amount
possible. Every dollar counts.

Dear friends,
If you are anything like me, by now you are anxiously
awaiting the first whiff of fall in the air, and dreaming of
the beautiful days to come, when the light turns golden
and the air gets crisp. Here at the ICCC too, there is much
to look forward to this fall, and much to plan!
As you can probably imagine, we are gearing up for
the 38th annual Festa Italiana, our biggest bash of the
year and one that has become a favorite of all those who
have attended it. If you are up to being a part of this giant
party, we invite you to become a volunteer! Every year,
hundreds of people join our efforts to make Festa Italiana
a huge success and we need you this year, too, more than
ever. Please go to our Festa Italiana website and fill out
the volunteer form. Alternately, you can call ICCC and
they will assist you in finding the best option for your
preferences. Regardless of where you end up, if you
decide to volunteer, you will be surrounded by people
having a good time and working hard for the shared love
of our beautiful culture. I am particularly excited to
announce that this year we have added a photography
contest! If you are an amateur photographer and would
like the chance to show your work and potentially win a
price, check out the information on the Festa website.
As if all this were not enough (and believe me, it could
be in terms of workload), we are committed to bring
you more fun, cultural activities at Milford House, as
well. From conversation classes to La Piccola Cucina to
our contemporary film series, your home away from home
will be ready to welcome you. One very special event is
the wine tasting and pairing happening on September
20. We are very lucky to bring you Pierangelo Tommasi,
of the Tommasi Estate near Verona, who will delight us
with some of his wonderful wines from the Veneto
region. In this, he will be joined by the hip Borgo Food
Station, who will provide special bites to accompany these
delicious wines.
After Festa Italiana is over (and after we have all had
the chance to sleep and rest), the ICCC will bring back the
beloved Ispettore Montalbano and a special Halloween
film evening for adults, celebrating the king of Italian
horror, Dario Argento. We will also start the Sapore
Italiano, our intimate cooking classes, and we will
continue to invite you to our Italian Language Meet Ups at
Fellini Café.
Once again, on behalf of our entire team, I thank you
for your support and urge you to get involved!

ICCC Board Nominations
Deadline October 1, 2016
The Italian Cultural & Community Center is seeking
qualified candidates to fill five upcoming vacancies on the
Board of Directors. Each term lasts three years. The
election will be held at the annual meeting of members on
December 1, 2016.
We welcome strategic thinkers who understand “the
big picture” and who can translate ideas into actions in
order to fulfill ICCC’s mission to advance, celebrate, and
preserve Italian culture and heritage for everyone.
Candidates must have the following qualities:
integrity, independence, confidence, corporate manners,
courage, and commitment. The overarching
responsibilities of Board members are governance,
fundraising, and public relations. Board members do not
have to be of Italian descent, but must have a passion for
Italian culture
Because we are a working board, all Board members
are expected to “do their share” to keep ICCC advancing.
The qualifications for Board members as listed in the
ICCC Bylaws are:
Good standing with dues current; legal resident of US;
no closer than third cousin to any other board member;
pass a background check; no convictions for felony, Class
A or B misdemeanor, crime of moral turpitude, or
declared to be of unsound mind by order of a court.
ICCC is a multi-faceted organization that is in
ascendency, growing by leaps and bounds, in scope and
influence. It is more critical than ever for ICCC to have
leaders capable of carrying forward our ambitious 5-year
strategic plan with a vision to become the destination for
all things Italian for all Houstonians.
If you’ve got what it takes to become a valued member of the ICCC leadership team, please submit your application to: Nominating Committee, ICCC, 1101 Milford, Houston, TX, 77006.
The deadline is October 1, 2016.

The annual “restaurant” meeting was held at the
Avalon Diner, which is owned by member, Bambilynn
Reina-Ramsey and her husband. More than 40 members
attended and enjoyed a very delicious dinner with
wonderful service. Thanks go to Bambilynn and to Anna
Messer, DoIH’s Corresponding Secretary, who set up this
dinner event.
Along with welcoming new member, Betty Julian,
mother of member, Venetia Boneno, the August meeting
was spotlighted by having a photographer take a picture
of the membership which will be featured in the new DoIH
cookbook “From the Boot to the Boot” that will be loaded
with Italian recipes and Texas-inspired recipes. Since the
DoIH sold out in 2012 of its very popular (and special
merit winner of the Tabasco Community Cookbook
Italian Cultural & Community Center of Houston www.iccchouston.com La Voce Italiana Festival Edition 2016 P a g e | 13
Awards) “Tutto Italiano”, the culmination of a new
cookbook has been on the membership’s radar for the
past several years. Thanks to Linda Marino, and her
cookbook committee, whose photo will also grace the
new cookbook. It is hoped that it will be ready in time for
the general public to purchase it when they attend the
38th Houston Italian Festival in October.
Also at the August meeting, the membership
discussed the making of its annual 15,000 meatballs, and
6,000 artichoke hearts for this year’s festival. This year
will mark the 17th year the membership has made the
festival meatballs and the 12th year, they have stuffed
artichoke hearts. In past years, the DoIH would always
make several thousand Italian cookies and bag them to be
sold in the Italian Cookies/Cannoli booth. While those
DoIH “cookie ladies” felt the need to make and sell the
cookies individually, that concept was not embraced until
last year when Linda Marino and her husband, Bernard, a
member of the ICCC board, headed up a group to make
and sell large Italian cookies, individually. Because this
concept was a huge success, that same group has started
its second year with six different Italian cookies, totaling
5,000 cookies, to be sold at this year’s festival.
Since its inception in 1999, the Daughters of Italian
Heritage has proven to be a pro-active group of ladies
who love to get together and who are always looking for
other pro-active women to join their ranks. So, if you love
making new friends, supporting the ICCC, along with other
community needs, and laughing a lot, go to
www.ciaodiva.org, or come to one of our meetings on the
second Wednesday of the month (except July, October,
and December) at 7 p.m. at the ICCC.
