Exciting Opportunity for First Christian Church Coming Sunday, June 15th! Choirs thrive on opportunities to share their talents and gifts, and concerts are the best way to do so. Many of you have participated in a choir or an organized musical of some sort, and know very well the thrill of stepping on stage and getting immediate feedback from earnest faces awaiting that first note. Concerts can have a theme, be seasonal, be worshipful, or be a general mix of genres. Church choir music however, is usually dependent on the time of year, liturgical theme, or relevant topic for a concert tour. Jacob Miller, Minister of Music at First Christian Church in Lubbock Texas, and his choir, simply called The Sanctuary Choir, are on a tour. This choir tours about every four years and their last tour in 2009 took them to the International Church Music Conference in Rome, Italy. This year their focus is on songs of the historic period of the late 1700’s and early 1800’s that might have been sung at Cane Ridge Meeting House, our Mother Church located in Paris, KY. As part of their choir tour, they will be stopping at First Christian Paducah to present music and worship that would have been appropriate to the period of Cane Ridge. (If you have never been to Cane Ridge, get more information at www.caneridge.org). This will be a joint worship service, and a very exciting opportunity! Being a part of a concert tour is the thrilling opportunity we at FCC Paducah are being presented! Jacob and I are friends and co-members of the Association of Disciples Musicians. This is the association (ADM) that meets each summer in conference for music, devotion and rejuvenation of church musicians. This year in July he will be the director of the chapel choir for ADM week at Central Christian Church in Decatur, Illinois, and I will serve as accompanist. I am thrilled to be able to announce this concert, and hope that you will reach out to friends, relatives, and neighbors and invite everyone. This is a don’t miss event. See you there! Saturday, August 16 th we will have a one day Back to School Bible School called Animal Crackers. The theme and lessons are based on Heifer International’s ministry, which is where the name Animal Crackers comes from. B2S Bible School will be held from 9 a.m.—3 p.m. and will include all the usual activities, great decorations, lessons, food, fellowship and a very special time of a multigenerational craft project. EVERYONE is then invited to congregate at the home of David & Linda Creason (405 Pugh Rd.) at 6:00 p.m. for a bonfire and lots of fellowship. If you’d like to help decorate, teach, provide food or help with the community craft project please contact me. Or if you’d like to help with the Summer Sunday School Series let me know! I’ll be happy to hear suggestions and accept help regardless of your interest or talent! —Nikki Dickerson ([email protected]) Join Us for a Nashville Mission Trip For the second year in a row we will be taking a one day mission trip to Nashville, TN to work at The Bridge Ministry on July 15 th . The Bridge Ministry’s main outreach is to the homeless and poor every Tuesday night under the Jefferson Street Bridge. They serve between 500-750 homeless weekly with a hot meal. During the evening, a service is also held and after the worship service, groceries, toiletry items, and clothes are also given away. Last year we took one ton of water. This year we will be taking toiletry items, sleeping bags, bicycles and other items need by the ministry. If you are unable to attend, you may help by donating towards the mission fund to provide items to take to The Bridge Ministry and by being in prayer for those that are called to go on this trip. Summer McNabb Bag Program Planned This year the Caring and Nurturing committee has approved a summer McNabb Bag Program. Over a four week period of time, we will be sponsoring 25 McNabb Students who will be attending a summer program with weekend food bags. Each bag will contain approximately 7 nutritious items that will help them get through the weekends when a food program is not available for them. To fund this project, we need your help. We need about $100 to fund the project. As little as a $4 gift can fund 1 student for 4 weeks. A $25 gift would sponsor all of the bags for one week. Please consider giving towards this project. Donations are needed by June 7 th . Any extra funds collected will be used for future McNabb bag projects in the fall. “The Vine Dresser’s Notebook” Study Coming Soon—Sign up Today. Scripture is filled with images and stories of grapevines and vine tending. Yet few modern people have any idea what that entails and the deep levels of symbolism that were intended in the Bible. Nikki Dickerson will be starting a small group study that will meet bi-weekly four times. The group study will be based on The Vinedresser’s Notebook. Written by a vinedresser, theologian, psychologist, and nun, this illustrated text centers on a visual meditation combined with short reflections about the spiritual life, extending the spiritual metaphor of the vineyard, the vinedresser, and Jesus’ teachings. The words are simple and few, the pictures clear and evocative, as much a part of the meditation as the text itself. In reading this book and understanding how the vines work and what the role of the vinedresser is, readers can explore more deply what vine care means for their spiritual walk. Study time and dates will be scheduled once 6-8 people sign up. If you are interested, please contact the church office (443-8251) or Nikki Dickerson at [email protected] Welcome New Member! On Sunday, May 4, 2014, Vicki Terrell came forward to join our fellowship of believers. Vicki works at Four Rivers Behavioral Health and her address is 154 Iroquois Dr., Paducah, KY 42001. Community Kitchen News Thank you to all who continue to volunteer their time on our Community Kitchen Service Day, the second Tuesday of each month. The Kitchen has good news—the Eckstein family has donated $300,000 to help with the renovation of the new Kitchen location! Please keep the Kitchen in your prayers. 2nd Annual FCC Classic Car Show Saturday, May 31 — 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Car registration is scheduled for 8 a.m. until noon with the awards being presented at 1:30 p.m. for Top Ten, Best of Show, and Peoples Choice. The cost is $5 per adult (kids under 12 are free!) We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks and music. Come out and see some beautiful and unusual classic cars! (Proceeds will be used for FCC building projects.) Our Oklahoma Mission Team On Monday, May 19, J. Gottman, Valerie Cantrell, Sherry Poole and Kay Henry left Paducah to travel to Moore, OK to help make repairs from the devastating tornado that hit that city last year. Thank you to Jimmy Allen for loaning us a vehicle for the trip and to all who made donations for expenses. Thank you to everyone who made our annual Community Picnic on May 18th a big success again this year. The delicious meat was prepared by our Holy Smokers Cooking Team — Tim Davenport, Bill Allen, Alex Wadlington, Mr. Wilkerson (from Arcadia Methodist) Carl Torian, Kelly Nuckols, Jimmy Allen & WR Sanders. Alex is our Holy Smoker in training and was a big help to the “old guys” on our team this year. Kenny Boaz, Eric Romanak, J. Gottman & Nikki Dickerson were blasted with water at the picnic to help raise money for The Bridge Mission Trip. Almost $200 was raised to purchase supplies. (See page two for more information on this upcoming mission trip.) Check out the calendar insert for more picnic pictures.

Our Church Was New Once!

Do you remember what year our church started? Who was the person or persons who decided it was time to plant a new church in our community? Well, it was started in 1849 by Fannie Jones, niece of pioneer George Rogers Clark. Just imagine what your life would be like if no one answered God’s call to start our church. Do you know that more than two-thirds of the United States population doesn’t live within close driving distance of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation? Because of the new church movement, Disciples have made great strides in correcting that sobering statistic. Disciples have started 830 churches since 2001, reaching more than 50,000 indi-viduals who may not have had a relationship with God. Our new churches worship in at least 19 different lan-guages. Just as our ancestors started new churches, consider how you can support the creation of new churches in places that do not currently have a Disciples church witness. One important way that you can support this effort is through your generous gifts to the Pentecost Offering. By supporting the Pentecost Offering, you are making it possible for the Church to recruit, assess, train and coach new church planters. One half of the Offering collected stays in our Region and the other half goes to Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation to support their new church min-istry work. This year’s Pentecost Offering will be taken on Sundays, June 1 and June 8. We give praise to God for the sacrifices of generations before us – the new churches that were started by courageous, visionary leaders. As a member of a Disciples church that was new once, will you consider participating in this offering so other churches can experience new life?
