Dudley Gillingham was born in Peckham Rye, London, England in 1926. A near-champion weightlifter, Dudley took up wrestling in 1947 after coming out of the RAF. He progressed rapidly and soon established himself for his physical power and ability in the ring. In the UK, Gillingham was known as Alan Garfield and fought as a good guy in the ring. However, when in the US he fought under his real name Dudley Gillingham and was predominantly a heel (bad guy). Like lots of other aspiring grapplers he had set backs as well as his victories. One of his most memorable battles in the early fifties was with Bert Assirati. Dudley maintains that, had he not suffered a cartilage injury during this bout, he would have won the British title.

Later in his career he toured Canada and crossed the border and wrestled in New York. Dudley had a passion for restoring vintage cars and motorbikes and the lounge room was often littered with parts.

A family orientated man, Dudley passed away aged 56 in 1982 and left behind his wife and 2 children, the youngest being the owner of Dudley’s, Mary Miller (nee Gillingham)
