Circumstances are very different,

but Kerri Radcliffe will watch Away

Game (Snitzel) in Saturday week’s

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL,

1400m) from the same spot as when the hardy

filly took out last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic

(RL, 1200m) – 14,500 kilometres away in Kentucky.

“Maybe it’s a good omen that I’m

not there,” says the Newmarket-based

bloodstock agent, who bought the daughter

of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) for $425,000 at

the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

in 2019. “I haven’t been there for any of her

races, and for every race she has won, I’ve

watched her in America, so that could be a

good omen as well.” Continued on page 3>>

As was the case in 2020, Radcliffe will

be in Keeneland for the January Horses Of All Ages Sale when Away Game

goes to post in the $2 million feature before she heads to France to begin

her inspections for the forthcoming breeze-up season, particularly the

Ocala auctions in March and April. Very different, of course, is the nature

of the international sales climate, and the restricted movement faced by

agents in the face of Covid-19.

Two-year-old sales are now the primary focus of Radcliffe’s year,

unsurprising given her roll of honour from juvenile auctions includes top-

tier winners Nadal (Blame), and Dream Tree (Uncle Mo), as well as the Grade

1-placed pair Gronkowski (Lonhro) and Nemoralia (More Than Ready).

Backed by

principal client

George Bolton in the

US, Radcliffe enjoyed

a 2020 to remember,

with Nadal and

Volatile (Violence)

taking elite honours

before injury forced

both horses into

the breeding shed

prematurely. In

addition, the Bob Baffert-trained Illumination (Medaglia D’Oro) ran third

in the Debutante Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Del Mar in September to mark herself

down as a three-year-old with significant potential this year.

Meanwhile in Australia, Away Game supplemented her Gold Coast

exploits by landing the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and Percy Sykes

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), having also finished a memorable second to Farnan

(Not A Single Doubt) in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

Raced by an all-female syndicate that includes Aquis Farm’s Loretta

Fung, Away Game was the first horse Radcliffe purchased in Australia

under her own name, as well as being the first youngster she took home

from Magic Millions.

Originally bought for Bolton, Away Game’s ownership shifted quickly

after her purchase through Radcliffe’s burgeoning relationship with

Hannah Mathiesen, founder of Oakmont Horse Club and a key part of

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s training operation.

Speaking to ANZ Bloodstock News on Thursday morning while driving

to Dublin to complete a rapid Covid-19 test prior to her flight to America,

Radcliffe takes up the story.

“Hannah had helped me at Keeneland the September before and we’d

bought Enchanted Night for her father, George and Sheila (Rosenblum),”

she says.

“I was at Magic Millions and we decided we were going to buy Away

Game for George. She was very typical of what I

buy, with a great hind leg, strength, a great

shoulder and a big walk. She was bred by a very good farm in Mill Park and

she was a lovely, sweet filly.

“George was on the phone while I was bidding, we bought the

filly and everything was great. Then, four weeks later, George decided

he didn’t want to have horses in Australia anymore, which wasn’t very

helpful.

“It was great Hannah was in Ciaron and David’s at the time and we

were able to put the syndicate together. We bought two fillies, Away Game

– who I didn’t take a share of – and a More Than Ready filly called Acacia

Road, who I did take a share of. Acacia Road won a race and we got her

sold, but not having a share in Away Game is a kick in the teeth if ever

there was one!”

Away Game proved a brilliant winner of last year’s Classic, shooting

a length and three-quarters clear of the 16-strong line-up under Luke

Currie. Explaining her decision to miss the race, in a time when racecourse

absence was an option, rather than a mandate, Radcliffe says: “I flew over

to Magic Millions last year and looked at all of the horses, but I didn’t know

how much time I had. Sheila wanted me to look at mares at Keeneland for

her, so I had to make a decision if I stayed for the sale and the race, or if I

went to America.

“I saw Nadal in California, then I flew to Kentucky and watched the

Classic in my hotel room. I think I woke the whole hotel up at about

4.30AM when she won, then I flew back to LA to see Nadal win his maiden.

It all happened within about a week, which was very exciting.”

Reflecting on Away Game’s juvenile campaign, which yielded four

wins from eight starts and prize-money in excess of $2.5 million, Radcliffe

adds: “I was so pleasantly surprised. She must be tough as nails to do what

she did.

“I wasn’t expecting it. Sometimes when you’re buying horses for the

likes of Bob Baffert, there is more pressure, but I didn’t feel the pressure as

much with Away Game, at least before she won the Magic Millions. After

that, I started feeling the pressure. But with horses like Nadal, I felt the

pressure from day dot – it was very different.”

Nadal is about to embark on his first breeding season at Shadai

Stallion Station in Japan, while Volatile is set to begin his first year in

the covering shed at Three Chimneys Farm. Both proved brilliant older

horses, the former topping off his unbeaten four-race career with victory

in the Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f)

as a three-year-old in May, while

the latter took out the Alfred G

Vanderbilt Handicap (Gr 1, 6f)

as a four-year-old in July.

Away Game made her first

start out of the juvenile ranks

when finishing second to

Classic favourite Isotope (Deep

Field) in the Gold Edition Plate

defeated that rival – albeit with the duo

both under a tight hold – when landing a 900-metre barrier trial at the

Gold Coast on Tuesday.

The Classic will be Away Game’s first start at 1400 metres, of which

Radcliffe says: “I’m personally not sure if she will stay, but the way she

won her barrier trial, she looked great. She has to take her chance – it’s like

everything, you don’t know until you try.

“I also wasn’t quite sure if she would train on – she’s pretty compact

and strong, but these Australian horses are so different to the two and

three-year-olds in the UK. They’ve got more bone – they’re just built like

tanks.”

Looking ahead, Radcliffe is understandably buoyant about both the

prospects of Away Game and the two-year-old sales season, despite the

well-versed implications of the coronavirus.

“I’d like to see Away Game come over here for Royal Ascot,” she says. “If

she does everything right this year, it would be fantastic to see it happen.

“I’m also excited about getting to Ocala. I’ve been very cautious when

it comes to Covid, but we’ve got to keep the game going. The sport has

been so resilient – it’s been quite incredible how people have stepped up

to the plate and the positivity within the industry has been something to

behold.

“It’s a new year with new horses and a fresh start. Hopefully Away

Game can get it off with a bang.” Kerri Radcliffe RACING POST

Hipstar to top charts in PearlKelly Schweida is hoping Miss Hipstar (Star

Turn) can cement her spot in the Magic

Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) with a victory

at the Gold Coast tomorrow. Schweida took

the unusual step of taking Miss Hipstar to an

800-metre two-year-old race at Ipswich on

December 24 where she started at $1.50 and

won easily. "She had to go to Ipswich to try

and get a bit more prize-money and she did

that pretty well," Schweida said. By necessity,

Schweida will start Miss Hipstar in the Pearl

Quality (1100m) in a bid to ensure her position

in the Classic the following week. Presently,

Miss Hipstar sits 14th in the qualifying order

but Schweida wants to make certain she is in

action on January 16. "She slipped down a bit

in the order of entry and I couldn't take the risk

of her missing out if I didn't run her," he said.

Recent history shows a growing trend of horses

winning the Magic Millions on a seven day

back-up. Five of the past eight Magic Millions

winners have recorded back-to-back victories at

the Gold Coast within seven days while another,

Real Surreal (Real Saga), was successful at Eagle

Farm a week earlier. "Going to the Gold Coast

the week before is a good pattern and it gives

them a look at the track beforehand as well

as the travelling experience," Schweida said.

"She's a big, tough filly but she's pretty laid back

which is what has got her to this stage."

Hurdles to sharpen Profit for The WaveChris Anderson has turned to the tried and

tested method of putting Profit (Dundeel) over

hurdles in a bid to rejuvenate the four-year-

old ahead of his start in tomorrow’s The Wave

(1800m) at the Gold Coast. A year ago Profit was

rated one of the most progressive members of

Anderson's team having won three of his first five

starts and also finishing second in the Vo Rogue

Plate (Gr 3, 1400m). The gelding finished third

at his first two starts this campaign but it was his

last-start sixth in the Bernborough Plate (Listed,

1600m) that disappointed Anderson and he's

been searching for answers as to why. "I don't

think he's really had the races run to suit him," the

trainer said. "He's a much more effective horse

when he's allowed to get back and finish over the

top of them." Anderson has worked on refocusing

Profit by altering his training program since the

Bernborough. "I've had him hop over a few jumps

which he's really starting to relish and it's just to

do something a bit different with him" he said.

The Astrologist seeks Gold Coast richesThe Astrologist (Zoustar) will attempt to bolster his

career earnings in a week with a valuable smash

and grab raid on the Gold Coast. The four-year-

old will line up as Sportsbet’s $2.70 favourite for

tomorrow’s $250,000 Magic Millions Rising Stars

Plate (1300m), with connections keen to back

him up seven days later in the $1 million Magic

Millions Cup (1400m). The winners’ cheques for

both races total $725,000 - significantly more than

the $369,890 he has pocketed from his 11 starts to

date. “He flew up and he’s really settled in nicely,”

Troy Corstens, who trains in partnership with his

father Leon, told RSN yesterday. “He had a good

gallop on Tuesday morning on the course proper

and he had another light gallop on the synthetic

track this morning. He’s taken to this way of going

and settled in perfectly so that’s definitely not

going to be an excuse for us on Saturday. It looks

a really nice race for him to springboard into the

big one.”

Newnham with three in January CupMark Newnham has already had a memorable

summer and he is looking at continuing

that winning run with three good chances

in tomorrow’s January Cup (Listed, 2000m)

at Randwick. The stable has been in a purple

patch of form with 14 winners from their last 50

starters and Spirit Ridge (Nathaniel), Gone Bye

(Al Maher) and Fulmina (Snitzel) will attempt to

add to that tally. European import Spirit Ridge

has had four starts for the stable, producing two

wins and two seconds in quality company. "He's

a promising horse. We've had a good opinion of

him from the time he arrived here," the trainer

said. "We'll most likely just give him this run on

Saturday, and then give him a short break before

heading into the autumn." Newnham will also be

represented by the consistent Gone Bye, another

who has delivered two wins and two seconds

from his past four outings. "He's a good horse for

the stable, you can send him around knowing

he'll generally run in the top three," Newnham

continued. "He goes on wet or dry tracks, gets on

pace, and is hard to get past. Depending on the

make-up of the pace in the race, he should do the

same on Saturday." Newnham doesn't dismiss

the chances of Fulmina, as he is confident the

wider spaces of Randwick will benefit the four-

year-old. "She's finally getting to her right distance

now, she found Gosford a bit short and sharp the

other day," he continued. "She does her best on

the bigger tracks. She's fourth-up, going well and

down in the weights."

Laure Me In heads to RandwickLaure Me In (Ad Valorem) will get another

chance to add further black-type to his record

when the consistent six-year-old lines up in the

January Cup. Since he joined David Pfieffer's

stables in late 2019, Laure Me In has had 13

starts for two wins and four placings, including

a second behind Greysful Glamour (Stratum)

in the ATC Cup (Listed, 2000m) in November.

"He's in great order, but we definitely want the

track to dry out a bit on Saturday," Pfieffer said.

"It looks an even enough sort of field however,

and hopefully everyone gets their chance

with even tempo and rhythm." The Randwick

track was rated a Soft 6 yesterday with warmer

temperatures predicted for tomorrow.

Never Again steps up to stakes gradeClinton McDonald believes last-start winner

Never Again (High Chaparral) can take the step

up in grade firmly in his stride when the six-

year-old contests tomorrow’s Chester Manifold

Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. "You

wouldn't call this a vintage Chester Manifold

Stakes. The highest rated is 99 and then there's

a handful around 95," McDonald said. "I think

the big thing for Never Again is that he drops

from 58.5 kilograms to 54 kilograms on the

minimum weight. That will really suit him. I

think this race will set up really well for him. He

likes the pace on and there's four or five who

go forward and Michael Walker can take up a

stalking role, something he excels at, in about

sixth or seventh position, which will really suit

him. He's going great. He's been a bit weak

mentally but he's really solid now. I'm really

happy with him.”

Brave Song aims for best in Chester ManifoldAmong Never Again’s nine rivals will be Brave

Song (Your Song), who is set to line up off the

back of a second behind Pandemic (Sepoy)

in the Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at

Caulfield on Boxing Day. “His run was good

because he didn’t have much luck there the

other day,” Peter Snowden, who trains in

partnership with his son Paul, told Racing.

com. “He was deep, back and wide and covered

plenty of ground early. It wasn’t until late in

the race (that) he got back in behind Pandemic

and chased him home so there was merit in the

run, and he’s come on nicely since.” Regarding

tomorrow’s race, Snowden continued: “It’s a

nice race for him, up to 1400 metres looks ideal.

He drew barrier one and, I hate saying it, but it’s

probably not the right sort of gate for him. He’s

better getting to the outside so Johnny (Allen)

has got a bit of work to do getting him to the

outside but the horse is going well.”

Effort bound for FlemingtonGareth Andrews is well aware of the task which

awaits Dream Effort (Reward For Effort) when

she jumps from her debut win in a maiden at

Yarra Valley to a Benchmark 70 at Flemington

tomorrow. “She’s shown a bit in her jump-outs

and she did race really well at Yarra, but it’s

more a case of it being that’s what fell our way

than anything else,” Andrews told Racing.com.

“You can run her in a Benchmark 64 for $22,000

somewhere and carry 57.5 kilograms against

older boys or you run against three-year-old

fillies carrying less weight for $135,000. We’ve

got nothing to lose. We were thinking about

giving her one run and tipping her out, but she’s

pulled up that well. She’s a speedy little filly and

she’ll probably be in it for a fair way, but it’s a

massive rise in class.”

Jigsaw aims at Blue DiamondThe Cindy Alderson-trained Jigsaw (Manhattan

Rain) emerged as a Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) candidate after a brilliant all-the-way

victory on his debut at Geelong yesterday.

TAB fixed odds firmed Jigsaw in from $26

to $21 for the $1.5 million juvenile contest at

Caulfield on February 20 after his three and

a quarter length victory over 1135 metres.

"He holds a Blue Diamond nomination and

we'll have a look at that and see how he goes

in the Prelude. He's a beautiful colt," stable

representative Jamie Bates said. Jockey Michael

Walker said there were some pleasing aspects

to Jigsaw's win. "He's won by three lengths

and yet he was waiting for them in the closing

stages. Who knows what he would have won by

if one of them had came to him?" Walker said.

"I've ridden him in a trial and track-work and

every time I get on him he improves which is a

great sign. He jumped well. He did everything

right. He's a really nice horse going forward and

he's a bombproof colt.”

Maskiell hospitalisedJason Maskiell was taken to local hospital for

scans after a fall at Geelong yesterday. Both

Maskiell and Fred Kersley hit the ground when

their mounts fell at around the 700-metre mark

of the 2400-metre maiden. Kersley was aboard

Slickback Teddy (Elvstroem) who appeared to

stumble and fall, causing interference to several

rivals, including Maskiell’s mount Northeast

Express (Dalakhani). Maskiell was conscious

and moving limbs after the incident, while

Kesrley walked back to the jockey’s room. Both

horses escaped injury.

Chaillot targets All-Star MileThe lightly-raced Chaillot (Testa Rossa) will be

targeted at the All-Star Mile (1600m) after being

nominated for the $5 million race by her trainer

Archie Alexander. The four-year-old has won

three of her six starts and also finished fourth

behind Shout The Bar (Not A Single Doubt)

in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at

Flemington in October. “She’s a really highly-

talented filly. We missed 15 months with injury

and had no idea how she would come back,”

OTI Racing’s Terry Henderson told Racing.com.

“When she won that first race (in September) after

missing the start, it was quite incredible. Then

she was more than respectable in those high-

quality races that followed. She’s only had half

a dozen starts, so it’s really all ahead of her if she

can put it together. She’s a very high-class filly.”

VRC hopes for autumn crowd boostFlemington is hopeful of having crowds of

around 15,000 by the time it's feature autumn

races come around. Although dependent on

Victoria's Covid-19 situation, the Victoria Race

Club has the capability to increase its capacity

NEW ZEALAND

Staying test likely to suit Mongolian WingsMurray Baker and Andrew Forsman know a

thing or two about preparing three-year-old

stayers and they are hopeful Mongolian Wings

(Mongolian Khan) can stamp himself as a

genuine New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)

contender when he tackles the Gingernuts

Salver (Listed, 2100m) at Ellerslie on Sunday.

Mongolian Wings is a son of Mongolian Khan

(Holy Roman Emperor), a horse Baker and

Forsman prepared to win three Group 1 races,

including Derbys in both New Zealand and

Australia, in addition to a Caulfield Cup (Gr 1,

2400m). Now residing at Windsor Park Stud,

Mongolian Khan’s eldest progeny are just three

and are starting to make a good impression.

Mongolian Wings has won two of his three

starts to date, with victories at Rotorua and Te

Rapa, and has been installed a $2.30 favourite

for Sunday’s assignment. “We’re happy with

him,” Baker said. “This will be a test to see if he

gets the 2100 metres, but he is heading in the

right direction. He put three lengths on them

last start and has won the past couple well. He

hasn’t got the class of his father, but hopefully

he can step up. He is drawn barrier one and he

should get a nice run from there.”

Feature targets for Sharrock fillies Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) placegetter Signora

Nera (Sweynesse) will be aimed at further

black-type features, but trainer Allan Sharrock

said what path the three-year-old filly takes will

become a lot clearer after racing at Awapuni

tomorrow. Signora Nera will jump from barrier

two in the Spreading Rural Bulk 1400 and her

performance will dictate whether she heads

north to contest the Karaka Million 3YO Classic

(RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie on January 23, or the

Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham

a week later. “We will just see how she races

on Saturday and pick an option,” Sharrock

said. “I am very happy with her. I think it was

the run of the race last start. She was the only

one who made ground, really. She is a nice filly

and is going to get better with time, but she is

doing a great job. I think she is a good chance

in that race. She is a portly wee girl and she

needs a race to have her ready for those two

bigger races.” Signora Nera could be joined on

Saturday by stablemate Sumi (Atlante), who

is dual accepted with the Southern Rangitikei

Veterinary Services 1400. Sumi is also on a path

towards the Desert Gold Stakes and Sharrock is

leaning towards lining her up against the older

horses this weekend.

Rae million-dollar dreaming The Ken Rae and Krystal Williams-Tuhoro-

trained two-year-old Follow Your Dreams

(Contributer) looked a picture when galloping

between races at Ruakaka yesterday. The stakes-

placed Follow Your Dreams has won two of his

four starts and was luckless when fifth over 1100

metres at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. He is rated a

$10 chance in the NZ$1 million Karaka Million

2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on January 23.

Craig Grylls galloped the colt over 1000 metres

in 1:01.08, covering the last 600 metres in 34.13

seconds. “He’s great,” Rae said. “Craig just said

he’s very laid back and that he gave him a good

feel. Despite being a colt, he’s so quiet. He has got

a lot of speed, but it’s not electric. He just goes

when you ask him.” Grylls, who had a fruitful

day at Ruakaka riding five winners, will ride the

exciting youngster in the Karaka Million.

Local does it Ever So Easy at RuakakaChris Gibbs has always had plenty of time for

Ever So Easy (Super Easy) and he was delighted

to see the three-year-old gelding justify his high

opinion with a dominant victory in the Kamo

Club (1200m) at his home track yesterday. “I

was a little bit nervous because I had changed

my training with him quite a bit,” Gibbs said.

“He is quite clean-winded, so we just backed

right off and took him in really fresh. We

never galloped him any harder than about 15

(seconds) to a furlong and he just came into

that race beautifully. He has got a good brain. I

am really happy with the result.” Gibbs said he

has rated the three-year-old from an early stage,

which resulted in Ever So Easy making his race

debut in September in the Northland Breeders’

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), where he finished fifth

behind Need I Say More (No Nay Never). “The

horses who beat him were very good horses,”

Gibbs said. “I threw him in the deep end. I kept

looking around to try and find a suitable race

and there weren’t many decent maiden races

around at the time, so I thought we will let him

have a go. I think we got a really good line on

him.” Gibbs is now unsure where he will head

with Ever So Easy, but if he continues to improve

a trip across the Tasman to the Brisbane winter

carnival could be in the offing.

after a holiday which nearly cost him his career.

The 28-year-old returned to his native India

for his annual visit home in late February last

year and found himself stranded as a result of

border closures due to Covid-19, as the global

pandemic took flight. Singh is currently in

quarantine in Auckland and can’t wait to return

to Fraser Auret’s Marton stable where he will be

reunited with friends, in addition to his brother

Mahipal. “For the first four or five months I

couldn’t do anything. But I can’t thank my boss

Fraser enough and also Maree Marshall. They

kept assisting me with the paperwork and had

references from New Zealand Thoroughbred

Racing,” Singh said. “The process was delayed

when Auckland went into a second lockdown

and one of the most challenging things was the

limited space in quarantine in New Zealand.

My paperwork to return was approved a

couple of months ago, but getting a flight and

a quarantine space took a bit longer and I got

back on January 2. It is really exciting to be

back. It’s been a long time.”

SGP: Inferno bound for AustraliaTop Singapore sprinter Inferno (Holy Roman

Emperor), who was touted as potentially

the best trainee from the Lion City since the

great Rocket Man (Viscount), is heading for

Australia. Inferno, who was withdrawn from

the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) last

month due to a near foreleg injury, will spell

down under as he recovers from that injury. A

decision will be made whether the Cliff Brown-

trained Inferno returns to Singapore or enters

training in Australia in the coming months. The

four-year-old has won eight of his nine starts,

including five Listed races; two of them, the

Singapore Guineas (1600m) and the Lion City

Cup (1200m), are Singapore Group 1 races.

HK: JC Roberts Stakes winner to step outDavid Hayes will cast the unbeaten Beauty Joy

(Sebring) into a daunting Sha Tin initiation

in the Class 2 Choi Hung Handicap (1400m) on

Sunday in a contest featuring the return of

Excellent Proposal (Exceed And Excel) and

a host of international form lines. Formerly

known as Talladega prior to export from

Australia, Beauty Joy will be ridden by Alexis

Badel in a race which boasts high-class

opposition headed by John Size’s Excellent

Proposal, Douglas Whyte’s Irish import

Russian Emperor (Galileo), Caspar Fownes’

Enrich Delight (Medaglia D’Oro) and Francis

Lui’s Lucky Patch (El Roca). The quintet,

along with Irish Listed winner Beauty

Smile (Free Eagle) and British import Tsar

(Kingman), will be challenged by a handful

of older contenders ahead of Hong Kong’s

lucrative Four-Year-Old Classic Series. Hayes

expects Beauty Joy to improve from Sunday’s

run, but points to the gelding’s quality -

including his victory in the JC Roberts Stakes

(Listed, 1800m) at Ascot in mid-March last

year. “He’s undefeated from Perth, his last

win was his best,” Hayes said. “He’ll get better

with the races over more ground and he’ll be

better for the Classic Mile and his two trials in

Hong Kong have been very good. But it’s a pretty

hot race.”

INTERNATIONAL

UK: Hawwaam at Shadwell but no decision

yet on future Future training plans have not

yet been decided for five-time Grade 1 winner

Hawwaam (Silvano), who is currently located

at Shadwell Stud in the UK following his arrival

from South Africa. Trained by Mike De Kock

for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Hawwaam

was crowned South African’s champion three-

year-old colt in 2018-19, while he signed off his

13-race career in the region with wins in the

Horse Chestnut Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the

Champions Challenge (Gr 1, 2000m) in June.

The five-year-old has since embarked on a three-

month mandatory quarantine spell in Mauritius

prior to arriving in the UK. “He’s in England, he’s

out at Shadwell Stud, and he arrived there during

the middle of December,” Angus Gold, Shadwell’s

racing manager, told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We’re just giving him a bit of time here to get over

the travel and I will speak to Sheikh Hamdan in

the near future to see where he would like him

to go into training. No final decision has been

made yet as to whether he stays in Europe or if

he goes onto Australia.”

Quarantine restrictions and

logistical constraints will prevent

the majority of European-based

bloodstock agents from attending

next week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale, but the auction house remains confident

that the strength and depth of the 1273-lot

catalogue can help compensate for the void.

A mandatory 14-day quarantine period

for those entering Australia, cancelled flights

and the impact on future travel were cited

as the main reasons for absence when ANZ

Bloodstock News spoke to a range of agents this

week, but Magic Millions managing director

Barry Bowditch remained upbeat in the face of

the challenges presented by Covid-19.

“Given the fact we’ve got very few

international buyers on the ground, and

many of the Sydney buyers are locked out of

Queensland, it makes our job a lot trickier,”

Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Obviously there is a void, but I’ve got some

confidence that the catalogue is strong enough

and buyers have got a lot of confidence in the

product we are selling. Our graduate success is

outstanding and this is a huge part of the market

in Australia, so if you aren’t participating here,

you’re missing out.

“There is a positive vibe around and

while there is some trepidation around the

restrictions to being here, I believe that the

catalogue is good enough so that people will

make a plan to do their best at the auction.”

Among those absent are Hannah Wall, who

has been a familiar face at the Gold Coast in

recent years, working alongside her boss David

Redvers in their successful Redwall Racing and

Redwall Syndicates ventures.

“We’d ummed and arred about going, and

David and I were keen to go down for the sale,

but realistically it wasn’t going to be possible

for us to both be away and quarantining for that

period of time,” Wall told ANZ Bloodstock News

yesterday.

“I said I was happy to go and do it and it

wasn’t like Christmas was going to be like the

Christmases we have known previously. I had

my visa and travel documents approved and I

was booked to fly down with Singapore Airlines

on December 23. Check-in opened on the 21st

and on the 22nd I received an email saying

everything was cancelled.

“At that stage, there just weren’t any other

flights and I couldn’t really fly much later

because I needed to be out of quarantine in

enough time to inspect the horses before the

sale started.”

While a lack of presence on the ground will

preclude Redwall’s involvement at this year’s

sale, Wall and Redvers are still playing an active

role in other ventures.

“The plan had been to join up with

Rosemont Stud, through Anthony Mithen and

Ryan McEvoy, and help them buy some colts

for a new set-up called the Victorian Alliance,”

Wall said.

“The venture will start from this sale and I

am doing quite a lot of the background work for

that before talking to the boys on the ground

who have got round the horses physically.

They’re very much steering the ship because

they are down on the ground, but we are a bit

more of a sounding board.”

Also missing will be Kerri Radcliffe, who

made a splash at the 2019 sale when she

purchased subsequent Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Away Game

(Snitzel) for $425,000. Radcliffe will instead

be in Keeneland for the January Sale before

travelling to France.

“I’ve got the catalogue and I’ve been

studying the videos. Obviously I’d like to be

there having bought the winner of last year’s

Classic, but I am available for the sale if people

wanted me,” she said.

“I had thought about doing the quarantine,

and I might have gone had I been able to choose

my own hotel where to spend it, but those that

have gone are the hardcore.

“And for me, America is so important as

well and it’s important I get to Ocala to see

the two-year-olds, so going to Australia really

would have wiped out all of January and God

knows how much of February coming home.”

Radcliffe, who did not participate in a

digital auction in 2020, was effusive in her

praise for Magic Millions and the information

that is provided for buyers online.

“Magic Millions have done such a fabulous

job with videos and photographs,” she said. “I

think a lot of the sales companies need to take a

look at how Magic Millions do their website – it’s

easy to get on there and see the horses properly.”

Shadwell was a notable absentee from

the 2020 Australian sales season, with racing

manager Angus Gold last April citing the move

of lead trainer David Hayes to Hong Kong, and

the increased number of homebred yearlings,

as contributing factors. While Gold will not be

in Queensland this week, he said a return to

action for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling

Sale in April remains a possibility.

“Sadly, I won’t be there as it’s just too

complicated with the situation in the world at

the moment. Obviously some people can buy

in absentia, so to speak, but Sheikh Hamdan

likes to have people there that he knows doing

it and unfortunately the gods conspired against

us this year,” he said.

“Sheikh Hamdan has said that maybe we

have got a bit too big in Australia for what he

intended, so maybe he won’t buy this year,

I’m not sure yet. Obviously without me being

there it wasn’t going to happen, so we’ve had to

bypass this sale and we’ll see when it comes to

the Easter sale if he wants to buy then.”

Tom Pritchard-Gordon, who operates

Badgers Badgers Bloodstock alongside his

father, Gavin, and Newmarket-based agent

Jamie Piggott, also said the need to quarantine

prevented them from making the journey to the

Gold Coast.

“We couldn’t make it down to Australia

due to the quarantine, which just wasn’t

viable, but we’ll be helping a number of

clients with research from up here,” Pritchard-

Gordon said.

Piggott added: “It’s a real shame not to

make it as it’s a wonderful event, but with the

quarantine – and the added quarantine to New

Zealand – it’s just not been viable. However,

it’s a quality catalogue as always and I’ll be

watching with interest.

“Everyone has had to adapt this year, so I’m

temporarily shifting focus onto other parts of the

globe that are currently more accessible, but I

look forward to being back in Australia next year.”

The Stud And Stable Staff Awards

(SSSA), staged by Thoroughbred

Breeders Australia and Racing

Australia and supported by

Godolphin, have been launched with

nominations now open for the prestigious

honours.

Now in its seventh year, the SSSA offers

recognition and more than $100,000 in prize-

money to strappers, stablehands, trackwork

riders, breakers, grooms, stud hands, float

drivers, office administrative staff and re-

homers, among others.

In a year when racing has been able

to continue almost without interruption

throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the SSSA

will acknowledge those unsung heroes who

have played their part behind the scenes.

Nominees can be recognised in six

categories: leadership; horsemanship;

dedication to breeding; dedication to racing;

administrative and ancillary services; and

thoroughbred care and welfare. All offer $10,000

to the winner and a trophy, with $3,000 to the

runner-up and $1,000 for third, with the money

to be shared among their workplace colleagues.

A seventh category, the Newcomer Award,

carries a $5,000 prize, with the opportunity

to undertake an educational experience with

Godolphin in Dubai next year.

The overall winner of the Excellence Award,

who comes from the first six categories, receives

$5,000 in addition to their category award,

with a further $1,000 to be shared among their

colleagues.

“Great trust was placed in the industry to

take responsibility for its own existence during

all the lockdowns and restrictions imposed

on the wider community,” said Thoroughbred

Breeders Australia chief executive Tom Reilly.

“Much of that trust was borne by those

who work in racing stables, on farms and in

other areas behind the scenes. Thanks to their

conscientious approach to the restrictions

and precautions, many livelihoods were

preserved.”

The significance of the SSSA is also reflected

in the words of the 2019 Excellence

Award winner Joe Agresta, a renowned

exercise rider who played a vital role in

several of trainer Bart Cummings’

Melbourne Cup wins.

“None of us do it for money because there

isn’t any. We do it because we love horses,

love being with them, love looking after them,”

Agresta says.

“These Awards mean so much to everyone

who is nominated, not just the winners. These

are the people who are rarely seen or heard,

but they are as important as anyone in the

business.”

Nominations open today and will close on

March 9, with nomination forms available at

studandstablestaffawards.com.au.

The awards ceremony, which was staged on

Zoom in 2020, is scheduled to be held on the

Gold Coast on May 26.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

| 17 |

The win of Four Moves Ahead

(Snitzel) on Randwick’s Kensington

track turned plenty of heads, with

the two-year-old already on the

third line of betting for the Golden Slipper

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at $15.

Raced by Jonathan Munz’s Pinecliff Racing

and bred by Munz’s G S A Bloodstock, she was

sent out a drifting $2.70 favourite in Saturday’s

1150-metre handicap, with money coming for

Godolphin filly Laurelin (Lonhro), a sister to

Kementari.

However, the John Sargent-trained Four

Moves Ahead quite simply dominated under

Tommy Berry, racing handy before striding

right away to score by two and three-quarter

lengths over Ruby Kisses (Flying

Artie) with a further half-length

to Morioka (Maurice) in third.

“She’s been a lovely filly from

day one. It was good to get one

away today and it showed she

has potential,” said Sargent.

“I was hoping to get some

cover but it did not work out. But

she got a clear run and a good

turn of foot. But the best thing

she has is her attitude, she is a

really laid-back filly, she just eats

and sleeps and she’s probably

the perfect racehorse.

“I know it was wet today and the breed like

it and so did her half-sister (Emeralds), but on

top of the ground she will not mind that either.

“She is going the right way now, we will

give her a few easy weeks and we will look at

the Widden Stakes in about a month’s time,” he

said.

According to prominent form analyst

Daniel O’Sullivan, Four Moves Ahead produced

the fifth-best rating among the two-year-olds

seen so far - significant given ten of the last 11

Golden Slipper winners had already made their

first appearance before Christmas.

Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) victor Acrobat

(Fastnet Rock) sits at the head of the ratings,

followed by Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m)

heroine Enthaar (Written Tycoon) and

Flemington winners Profiteer (Capitalist) and

Frost Flowers (Frosted).

It figures, then, that a bright future awaits

Four Moves Ahead, who remained in Munz’s

ownership after she was passed in at last year’s

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Four Moves Ahead is the second named

foal out of unraced American-bred mare

Doulmera. Bred by the Aga Khan, she was sold

to Badgers Bloodstock for €180,000 (approx.

AUD$285,000) at the 2014 Arqana December

Breeding Stock Sale and arrived in Australia a

month later.

Served by Widden Stud’s Sebring (More

Than Ready) in her first season down under,

the resulting foal was Emeralds, winner of the

Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) this season. Like

Four Moves Ahead, Emeralds was also passed

in, not reaching her $150,000 reserve at the

2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Doulmera produced a Pierro (Lonhro) colt

in 2019, slipped to Dundeel (High Chaparral)

that year and then was served by Snitzel

(Redoute’s Choice) in November.
