LAST YEAR ETBU 52, Austin College 34 - SEASON OPENERSHERMAN, Texas – A brand new way of playing East Texas Baptist University football was introduced in Sherman, Texas, with a season opening 52-34 win over Austin College (0-2). ETBU led from the beginning to the end scoring the most points in a season opener breaking the record of 49 points scored in the 2001 opener giving Joshua Eargle his first win in his first game as a head coach.

“This game means a lot to the program,” says head coach Joshua Eargle. “We have been practicing the last three weeks for this game and today we came out and showed what this team has been working on and capable of doing. I am so proud of these players and what they started today as we continue to chase greatness for ETBU football.”

ETBU finished with 611 yards of total offense which was just nine yards shy of breaking the single game record set in 2003. Brooks Holder debuted at quarterback and threw for 316 yards completing 31 passes on 40 attempts.

“Brooks did a nice job of running our offense today and taking care of the ball. We had a nice balanced attack on offense and our defense came up with some big plays when needed.”

Jamaine Sherman and Toi Glover produced career days with big plays all day. Sherman hauled in 12 passes for 175 yards which both put him in the top three for single game records. His 12 catches is second all-time in a game while his 175 yards receiving is third all-time. Glovier pushed through for 153 yards rushing on 29 carries for a career high.

Dylan Benge recorded six tackles to lead the team while Drew Benge and Romeo Botelua each picked off a pass.

It didn’t take long for the ETBU offense to score in the first quarter as John Gable trotted in from five yards out with 7:49 on the clock and then converted a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Austin College answered back in just 43 seconds to pull within two missing their extra point but just under three minutes later Glovier scored his first of three touchdowns on the day on a three-yard run and 4:31 on the clock. Just before the half ended, Austin College’s Madi-son Ross caught a 13-yard pass as they cut the lead to three, 16-13.

ETBU’s Chris Frazier collected his first touchdown of the year on an eight-yard pass from Holder with 9:49 in the second quarter extending the lead to 10, 23-13, but Austin College bounced back with 4:04 left in the half down three, 23-20 headed to the locker room.

Scoring twice in the third quarter on a 36-yard pass from Holder to Sherman and a two-yard pass to Glovier put ETBU 36-27 with 5:02 to go. ETBU would take a 45-27 lead in the fourth on a one-yard Glovier run and a 32-yard field goal from Cory McNeil. With 5:13 left Austin College scored their first points in the quarter to pull within 11, 45-34, only to see Roy Butler make it 52-34 on a 31-yard pass from Holder with 1:24 left to play.

The win for ETBU in a season opener is only the fourth for the program and first since 2010.
