Janae Shirley is ETBU softball and has carried on the tradition she played for and now has inherited as a coach. In six years leading the program she has led ETBU to new heights winning the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2010, playing in four NCAA Tournaments, and winning two American South-west Conference championships.

Winning the program’s seventh ASC Championship in 2013, Shirley con-tinues to have one of the best pro-grams in the nation. ETBU claimed the 2013 ASC Championship in style sweeping through the bracket going 4-0 with two wins over then #1 Texas-Tyler. The final victory of the tournament to take the cham-pionship was her 200th career win. ETBU then went 3-2 in the NCAA Division III Tyler Regional tourna-ment falling in the championship game. With a final record of 37-12 ETBU finished ranked ninth in the fi-nal NFCA National Poll as they were ranked for 12 straight weeks. Over-all, ETBU played 16 games against ranked opponents and went 10-6 as nine of those games came against top 10 opponents.

Shirley’s finest season came in 2010 with an unbelievable run through the NCAA Tournament to win ETBU’s first-ever NCAA Division III national championship. Playing out of the loser’s bracket of the regional tour-nament, ETBU went on an eight-game winning streak to take the national championship. ETBU won

four straight in the regional tourna-ment, defeating host Louisiana Col-lege two games straight, and then tore through the championship tour-nament going 4-0. In the 5-4 win over Linfield for the national cham-pionship, they came from behind to pull off what became a Cinderella season with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In six years, she has won two American Southwest Conference championships in 2011 and 2013. ETBU won the ASC East Division Championship in 2011 and then went 4-1 in the ASC Tournament playing through the loser’s bracket for the championship. After fall-ing to Texas-Tyler, ETBU defeated Mississippi College, 6-1, and then won two straight games over Texas-Tyler, 8-0, and 4-3. The 2013 cham-pionship mimicked a lot of the 2011 championship only ETBU went 4-0 in the tournament. Shelby Parker threw a perfect game for the first win over Howard Payne, 8-0, and then came from behind for a 3-1 win over #20 Texas Lutheran. ETBU then defeated #1 Texas-Tyler, 10-9, and 6-2, for the championship.

Shirley’s teams have made four NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013. She has posted a 14-7 record in those four appearances winning a re-gional title and a national champion-ship. ETBU hosted the 2009 West Regional Tournament while being the #1 seed. In six years, ETBU has

also been nationally ranked reach-ing #1 in the nation in 2009. They were ranked all of the 2011 season and for 12 straight weeks in 2013.

A part of the ETBU program since 2003, Shirley started out in the program as a player and then be-came an assistant coach. She was a member of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 teams winning two ASC Championshis and playing in two NCAA regional tournaments. She then became an assistant coach for two years in 2006 and 2007 before taking over the program in 2008.

Along with winning, her program has set high academic standards. She has had two players voted CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, three ASC Softball Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, and numerous ASC All-Academic team members. Both Lya Swaner and Ashton Brey have earned the ASC’s nomination for NCAA Female Athlete of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

Six years later, Shirley has the ETBU softball program back where it was in the early 2000s and geared up for more success to come.

2013 NFCA Polls

Game 1: #12 ETBU 8, Howard Payne 0Shelby Parker pitched a perfect game in the shortened five-inning game to start the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Howard Payne University. Lo-gan Gardner ended the game on a three-run home run in the bot-tom of the fifth inning as ETBU picked up their 31st win of the year and advanced in the winners bracket.

Parker recorded 12 strikeouts and is now 12-3 on the year while posting 10 straight strikeouts in the game. Gardner’s home run was her first of the year as she led the team with three RBI and two hits. Tawny Hank also had two hits for two RBI while both Lacy Liles and Sara Clements posted one RBI. Kayla Garcia, Liles, and Lya Swaner all had two hits, also. ETBU pounded out 14 hits for eight runs and Howard Payne finished with four errors and no hits.

ETBU opened the game with three runs in the first inning Liles had a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Alyssa Romero for the first run and then Sara Clements followed with a double to left field scor-ing Garcia. The third run came in on a Hank single as Clements touched home plate.

In the third inning, Hank picked up her second RBI of the game with a two-out single through the left side of the infield scoring Liles. The game then ended in the fifth with four runs by ETBU. With two outs, Swaner singled to the third basemen as Liles scored again in the game for the first run of the inning. Kelsey DeCarolis followed with a single and then the game ended on Gardner’s three-run shot over the center field fence for the 8-0 win.

Game 2: #12 ETBU 3, #20 Texas Lutheran 1It took only one inning to change the game for #12 East Texas Baptist University as they came from behind for a 3-1 win in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament over #20 Texas Lutheran. ETBU took the lead, 2-1, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added a security run in the sixth inning for the two-run win.

Kelly Jo McLendon came in as the relief pitcher to finish the final 3.1 innings for her eighth win of the year. She didn’t give up any runs, hits, or walks and struck out two batters. Shelby Parker started the game going 3.2 innings and gave up four hits and one earned run.

Alyssa Romero led the team with two RBI and had one hit. Lya Swaner went 3-of-3 and Lacy Liles 2-of-3 as each scored a run.

After three scoreless innings, Texas Lutheran took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. ETBU struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out when Romero doubled to right center field bringing in both Jordan Bullard and Swaner. Swaner started

Game 3: #12 ETBU 10, #1 Texas-Tyler 9Meeting for the fifth time this year in American Southwest Confer-ence play, #12 East Texas Baptist University held off #1 Texas-Tyler (40-3), 10-9, advancing to the championship game. ETBU had as large as a 7-1 lead in the game before Texas-Tyler scored eight runs in the final four innings of play.

There were 30 combined hits and 19 runs in the game along with eight errors as each team had 15 hits. Kelsey DeCarolis and Tawny Hank each had the big bats for ETBU swatting home runs. DeCar-olis posted three hits, two of them being a home run and a double, for five RBI while had two hits for two RBI. Sara Clements added a double and one RBI. Alyssa Romero and Maranda Westbrook also had a RBI.

Kelly Jo McLendon started the game and finished pitching six in-nings. She left in after the fifth inning and came back in the seventh for the save. Shelby Parker worked just 0.1 innings in the sixth giving up three earned runs as Tawny Hank finished out the sixth. Hank came in and shut down Texas-Tyler allowing just one hit in three batters faced. McLendon then re-entered in the seventh to earn the save.

Starting down 1-0 after the first inning, ETBU scored seven runs in the next two innings. With out in the bottom of the second and down 1-0, DeCarolis smacked a double to left field giving ETBU the lead, 2-1. Both Stacie Pilkington and Sara Clements made their way in for the lead.

With McLendon in the circle, ETBU kept trucking offensively giv-ing her support building up a 7-1 run after three innings. All five runs came in with two outs as Clements started the rally doubling in Kayla Garcia for a 3-1 lead. Hank followed with a single up the middle as Clements trotted in from second base. After a Texas-Tyler error allowed Lya Swaner on base, a pitching change took place as the Patriots brought in Batten in relief. Her first batter she faced was DeCarolis who took a pitch over the right centerfield fence for the 7-1 lead.

Texas-Tyler regrouped over the next three innings scoring seven runs for an 8-7 lead. They cut the lead to five, 7-2, with a run in the fourth and then added three runs in the fifth inning pulling within two, 7-5. Another three runs in the sixth inning put the nation’s number 1 team ahead of ETBU, 8-7.

Down to their last six outs with two innings remaining in the game, ETBU answered with three runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead, 10-8. After a pop out started the bottom of the sixth, Hank hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game at eight. A single and a walk followed as Texas-Tyler made another pitching change putting in Batten to pitch again replacing Abshire.

Jordan Bullard faced Abshire and loaded the bases thanks to a Texas-Tyler fielding error with just one out. Romero then singled to center field giving ETBU the 9-8 lead as Swaner came in putting

ASC Tournament - continuedETBU ahead for good. Finishing out the scoring was Westbrook as she singled up the middle bringing in DeCarolis for the two-run advantage.

Beginning the top of the seventh, McLendon re-entered after Parker and Hank pitched in the sixth inning. She quickly had the first batter ground out for the first out of the inning. Two singles and a walk followed to load the bases and then Batten was walked to pull Texas-Tyler within one as the bases were still loaded with one out. McLendon finished off the next two batters with a pop out and a ground out facing the meat of Texas-Tyler’s lineup in the fifth and sixth batters in the lineup for the ETBU win.

She picked up the save after the re-enter because Hank was on record when ETBU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hank moved to 9-4 on the year and McLendon earned her second save.

ASC Championship Game#12 ETBU 6, #1 UT-Tyler 2Sara Clements knocked a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning Saturday to give East Texas Baptist a lead it would not relinquish as the Tigers claimed the American Southwest Conference softball cham-pionship with a 6-2 win over Texas-Tyler. East Texas Baptist’s win was the second in as many days over the na-tion’s No. 1 team as the Tigers won their seventh ASC Tournament cham-pionship, and their first since 2011, when they also defeated UT Tyler. “This is a huge accomplishment. Our girls showed up to play this week-end,” East Texas Baptist head coach Jenae Shirley said after the game. “UT Tyler is a talented team; playing them is always a challenge and to defeat them twice in two days is a huge accomplishment.” With the ASC championship in hand, the No. 12-ranked Tigers (34-10) also earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III regional tourna-ment, which will be held at the UT Tyler campus in May. The Tigers last qualified for the regional tournament in 2011, one year after their Division III national championship. Texas-Tyler (41-4) lost to the Tigers for the third time this season after taking three out of four games from East Texas Baptist during ASC East Division play. “Our team had an advantage in that we were one of two teams to have defeated UT Tyler this season,” Shirley said. “We knew we were capable of hitting them and today we got a well-pitched game and good defense.” After prevailing 10-9 over the Patriots in the winners bracket final Friday, ETBU’s Shelby Parker (13-3) silenced the bats of one the nation’s best hitting teams Saturday, scattering five hits to earn the complete game over a lineup that features nine .300-plus hitters. Brittney Batten’s two-run home run in the fourth inning that cut ETBU’s lead to 4-2 was the only blemish on Parker’s line. Clements’ home run to right-centerfield off UT Tyler pitcher Amanda Lopez with two outs in the first inning gave Parker all the support she needed. Maranda Westbrook and Kayla Garcia knocked one-out singles to set the stage for Clements’ big hit.

Lopez (2-1), a sophomore who had yet to appear in the circle for the Patriots in the tournament, gave up four earned runs over 1 2/3 innings. She came out of the game shortly after giving up an RBI single to Alyssa Romero that scored Kelsey DeCarolis in the bottom of the second inning. The Patriots briefly seized momentum in the top of the fourth when Batten knocked her first homerun of the tournament, scoring Carli Wheeler in the process. Batten was ETBU’s toughest out in the tournament; she finished the event with a .643 batting average (9-for-14) over five games. The Tigers, however, were undeterred by the momentary shift in momen-tum. In the bottom half of the inning, ETBU pushed its lead back to four when Kayla Garcia’s two-run double to right field scored Romero and DeCarolis. “What was special about this weekend was that we had different heroes in every game we played,” Shirley said. “Yesterday it was Kelsey (five RBIs on Friday), and today it was Sara and Kayla.” Clements’ performance Saturday vaulted her onto the All-Tournament team, joining teammates Westbrook, Parker and Lya Swaner. Parker opened the tournament with a five-inning perfect game over Howard Payne on Thursday, and Swaner – the lone senior on the ETBU team – was named the tournament MVP after batting .500 and playing flawless defense in the Tigers’ four wins.

Game 1: #9 ETBU 3, #13 CMS 0It took just three innings to wipe off the dust for #9 East Texas Baptist Uni-versity after a two-week layoff as they shutout Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 3-0, for their 35th win of the year advancing on in the NCAA Division III Tyler Regional. ETBU scored two runs in the fourth inning and Shelby Parker continued her dominance from the circle allowing just one hit.

Parker won her 14th game of the year for the complete game shutout with fanning seven batters. Kelsey DeCarolis led the team with two hits but both Lacy Liles and Lya Swaner had a RBI as Liles swatted her eighth home run of the year in the sixth inning.

“The girls did a great job today of playing a full game and this game right here set us up in a great position in the tournament,” says head coach

NCAA Tournament

Page 36: ETBU Softball - 2013 Championship Edition

Janae Shirley. “We needed to play just one game today. Shelby started the game off well throwing the ball and the team came through with some clutch hits that helped us scratch our way through.”

After three scoreless innings, where both teams had runners on and chances to score, senior Lya Swaner used her post-season experience hitting a clutch two-out double scoring Sara Clements for the 1-0 lead. DeCarolis followed with a single to left field and a fielding error allowed Swaner to come around third and head home for the second run of the inning.

That is all Parker would need for a lead as she retired the next 12 batters to secure the win. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps only hit came in the second inning on a single to left field. From that point on, the next 17 batters were retired by Parker with several nice defensive plays from ETBU.

Liles collected her eighth home run as the leadoff batter in the sixth inning smashing a shot off the left field foul pole about 30 feet up.

Game 2: #9 ETBU 1, #17 Redlands 0A dynamite defense propelled #9 East Texas Baptist University to their ninth straight win shutting out #17 the University of the Redlands, 1-0, advancing in the championship round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. For the second day in a row Shelby Parker pitched a shutout allowing just four hits as ETBU won their 36th game of the year. ETBU has now recorded 13 shutout wins on the year.

“This win was huge for us. We know we have a tough road ahead of us but it definitely sets up for a good position in the tournament,” says head coach Janae Shirley.

Winning nine straight games, the last five over ranked opponents, ETBU has a 10-4 record in one-run games is 3-0 when winning 1-0. In the nine-game run, ETBU has a one-run win over #1 Texas-Tyler, 10-9, in the American Southwest Conference Tournament.

“The girls are doing a nice job as they continue to carry over stuff from game to game and gotten better each time,” says Shirley on the nine-game winning streak. “They have done a good job of adjusting to the different teams we have been playing. Our goal every game is to play our best ball and continue to get better.”

It was the defense that adjusted against the Redlands allowing just four hits and making big plays as ETBU collected 16 outs on fly balls. With the Redlands threatening to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, as runners were on the corners, Logan Gardner called everyone off on a pop up in the infield to grab the final out and send ETBU forward in the winner’s bracket.

Freshman Kelsey DeCarolis, who had two hits for ETBU comments, “It’s a really good feeling to get a win in the tournament but it’s not just me it’s the whole team.”

Having no problem hitting Redlands ace Kayla Uphold, who had 24 wins on the year, ETBU ran into a chore of bringing in those runners when they were scoring position. Finishing with seven hits, two of which were doubles, there were eight runners left on base.

The only run ETBU needed came in the first inning on a Lacy Liles double to left center field. Alyssa Romero, who started the game off with a single to left field, scored on the play. Liles is now 3-for-6 in the tournament with a home run and double bringing in two of ETBU’s four runs.

Romero, Maranda Westbrook, and Kayla Garcia each had a hit to give ETBU four hits.

Parker once again shined from the circle giving up just four hits and earn-ing a shutout for the second day in a row. She struck out three batters and retired 11 straight from the second through fifth innings. With the win today, she is now 2-2 in NCAA Tournament appearances after going 0-2 in 2011 in the Tyler Regional.

Staying in the winner’s bracket, ETBU now faces an opponent they have already played six times in 2013 in Texas-Tyler. Both teams have won three games each as Texas-Tyler won the regular season match ups 3-1 in ASC East play and ETBU won two in the ASC Tournament for the championship.

Shirley says, “Both UT Tyler and us are two great programs and it’s al-ways going to be a battle competing against each other. I think you will see a complete and exciting ball game tonight.”

Game 3: #5 UT-Tyler 4, #9 ETBU 1A clash of the Titans took place for the seventh time this year between #5 Texas-Tyler and #9 East Texas Baptist as they squared off against each other in the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Regional Tournament. Texas-Tyler took the upper hand in this round, 4-1, to advance to the championship game as ETBU now will play out of the loser’s bracket on Mother’s Day.

The battle came down to one inning for Texas-Tyler as they scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning to move up to the driver’s seat the rest of the game. The first three innings both ETBU’s Kelly Jo McLendon and Texas-Tyler’s Kelsie Batten were mowing down batters in order. With one out in the fourth, ETBU had a fielding error allowed only the second runner of the game for Texas-Tyler to come in from second base for the first run of the game. Two batters later, another Texas-Tyler run came in with two outs with a single to left field and then the third run crossed when the next batter had a single up the middle. Those three runs is all Texas-Tyler’s Batten needed as she didn’t allow a single hit until the fifth inning.

McLendon continued to pitch well and finished giving up just one earned run on six hits. She walked one batter and four runs came in as she fell to 8-2 on the year.

“Kelly Jo (McLendon) threw a good game but caught some tough breaks.

She pitched a nice ball game and gave us a chance to win,” says head coach Janae Shirley.

Texas-Tyler’s Joey Cronin had a solo home run in the fifth inning for the 4-0 lead as the other run in the game.

ETBU was held to three hits as two came from Tawny Hank. Hank broke up the perfect game in the fifth inning with a shot off of Batten’s shin and then doubled in the seventh inning. Kayla Garcia posted the other hit.

The only run for ETBU came in on Lya Swaner’s ground out in the seventh as Lacy Liles scored.

The series this year now moves ahead to a 4-3 advantage for Texas-Tyler after meeting seven times. These two teams met four times during the regular season as Texas-Tyler took three of four to finish in first place in the east division. ETBU won the next two meetings in the ASC Tourna-ment to win the championship to even the series at 3-3 before the NCAA regional tournament meeting.

Texas-Tyler ended ETBU’s nine-game winning streak and the Tigers will now play out of the loser’s bracket facing the University of the Redlands at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. ETBU handed Redlands their first loss in the tournament, 1-0, earlier in the day on Saturday.

ETBU is now one game away from elimination from the tournament. Hank comments about playing from this position, “It’s always one game at a time. You have to look at each day as a new day because in softball it always changes. If one person is struggling on the team, you have another teammate to pick them up.”

Shirley says about playing Redlands for the second time in the tourna-ment, “Our approach doesn’t change because we are playing somebody different but we know we are going to have to show up and play. They had a tough ball game with us yesterday and they had another tough win today. We know we are going to have to show up and play.”

This regional started with five nationally ranked teams and now is down to three as Redlands eliminated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earlier on Sat-urday. This regional has produced national champions in ETBU, Pacific Lutheran, and Linfield in the past and will have the best represented at the World Series.

“Definitely the regional is the toughest part of this whole bid. A nice thing about this regional is it sets up for a good experience at the World Series,” says Shirley. “We have been there before and we understand what it takes to get to that point. Playing tough teams is what the games are all about because these players want to go out there and compete. This is one of the most competitive groups of players I have ever had and they are a young team and they are excited about every opportunity they get to play. Playing good teams get them excited.”

Game 4: #9 ETBU 5, #17 Redlands 3It was win or go home for #9 East Texas Baptist University in their elimina-tion game of the NCAA Regional Tournament as they held onto a 5-3 win over the University of the Redlands. ETBU opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never gave up the lead winning their 37th game of the year.

Lacy Liles, Lya Swaner, and Sara Clements each had two hits as ETBU collected eight on the day. Swaner, playing in her final NCAA Regional Tournament, led the team with two RBI while Liles, Clements, and Tawny Hank each brought in one run.

For the third time in three days Shelby Parker had another strong perfor-mance in the circle. She moves to 3-0 in the tournament with her third complete game in as many days moving to 16-3 on the year. She mowed down five batters and now has 135 strikeouts on the year and did not walk any batter.

ETBU once again dominated Redlands ace Kayla Uphold scoring five runs in the first three innings as all five runs were earned. Liles started the four-run inning with two outs after Maranda Westbrook stole her 20th base of the year. With a 3-2 count, Liles singled down the right field line as Westbrook came around for the first run of the game. After a Clements single, Hank doubled to the left field line as Liles made touched home plate for the 2-0 lead. Swaner made it 4-0 on her sixth double of the year bringing in both Hank and Clements.

The third inning brought another run in for ETBU moving the lead to five. After the first out, Liles and Clements posted back-to-back doubles as Liles came in for the fifth run.

Redlands made the game interesting in the sixth with a two-run home run with one out and then brought in the third run in the top of the seventh with two outs. With runners in scoring position, Grace Rose grounded out to Westbrook at third base to end the game as ETBU kept their season alive.

The ETBU defense once again played a strong game with 10 ground outs and six fly outs. Swaner had four pop foul catches behind home plate.

Game 5: #5 UT-Tyler 7, #9 ETBU 6 (9 inn)Clashing for the eighth time this year and playing for the NCAA Division III Regional Championship, two of the nation’s best programs battled it out all the way through nine innings when #5 Texas-Tyler found the game winning hit in the top of the ninth inning, 7-6, over #9 East Texas Baptist University. The momentum went both ways with ETBU carrying it early in the game before Texas-Tyler snatched it away in the end.

Texas-Tyler brought in the go ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and then their defense came through in the bottom of the inning. With one runner on base, first baseman Rachel Howell grabbed Tawny Hank’s line drive shot for the final out to end the last battle between two of the best teams in the nation.

“We knew it was going to be a battle and that we needed to finish off the game and play the whole game,” says head coach Janae Shirley. “Six runs proved to not be enough in one inning but it was great for our play-ers to jump on Batten putting her out of the game for the first time in the tournament.”

Kelsey DeCarolis led ETBU with three hits while Alyssa Romero, Lacy Liles, Lya Swaner, and Kayla Garcia all had a RBI. Shelby Parker took the loss as she struck out four batters as she finishes at 15-4 on the year. Liles, DeCarolis, and Parker were all named to the All-Region team for their play in the tournament.

After two scoreless innings, ETBU erupted for six runs in the third inning putting Texas-Tyler’s Kelsie Batten out of the game for the first time in the entire regional tournament. Batten had pitched every inning of every game for the Patriots before ETBU shook her up taking the lead.

Alyssa Romero brought in the first run of the third with a single to the outfield and two batters later Kelsey DeCarolis made it 2-0 with a single through the right side as Maranda Westbrook came in. Lacy Liles sacri-ficed her at-bat putting down a squeeze bunt as Romero came sliding in at home making it 3-0. At that point, Texas-Tyler relieved Batten from her pitching duties putting in Heather Abshire.

Abshire had a hard time getting started with a walk and hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lya Swaner followed with a hard hit single to the pitcher as DeCarolis came in. Abshire then walked Garcia for an easy RBI and a five-run lead. Two pitches later, Abshire had a wild pitch allowing Stacie Pilkington to become the sixth run of the inning. She finally got out of the night mare inning with a ground out as ETBU took the momentum to their side.

Texas-Tyler’s Abshire quickly made up for her performance in the bottom of the third leading of the fourth with a solo shot to left field for the first run of the game. Their second run came in the fifth inning to pull within four of ETBU, 6-2. Abshire then settled down in the circle and retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings. ETBU had a runner on with two outs in the sixth inning but Texas-Tyler held her on as they trailed by four with three

outs remaining in the game.

After the first runner was put on by being hit, Texas-Tyler had two straight outs before their rally started. Four straight hits followed including the last as a double that cleared the bases to tie the game at six. In the bottom of the seventh, ETBU had a chance to take the win with the bases loaded and two outs but couldn’t get the hit to end the game.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and then with two outs in the top of the ninth, Vanessa Carrizales put Texas-Tyler ahead with a double off the left field wall as Howell became the go ahead run. The game wasn’t over though as ETBU had a chance to tie the game with one runner on but the Texas-Tyler defense ended the game grabbing Tawny Hank’s line drive shot to first base.

This marked the final game for four-year starter Lya Swaner. She has been a cornerstone in the program the last four years winning all the championships you could win as a player. The double major honor’s stu-dent graduated last week with her degree and now will pursue medical school.

Shirley says, “Lya Swaner gets to walk away with two conference cham-pions, a divisional championship, a regional championship and a national championship. She can definitely go away from this happy with her ca-reer and she helped the team get back to the point to where they know what it takes to get there.”

After four years of playing for ETBU, Swaner reflected on her career at the post-game press conference saying, “It’s been great playing here at ETBU and I wouldn’t pick any other team to play for. This is my team and will always be my team and we are great. I love coming out here and playing in a regional championship game and I love playing against Tyler. We got ours in conference and they got theirs here and that is just how it rolls. Tyler will always be my favorite team to play because they always bring it and it always makes us try harder.”

ETBU loses just Swaner for 2014 and has a very young squad that com-peted for the regional championship and won the 2013 ASC Tournament championship.

Shirley finishes with, “Our future is bright and you haven’t seen the last of ETBU softball.”
