WELCOME to 2009LADY TIGER VOLLEYBALL!The Lady Tigers are a committed group of athletes. I know this from first-hand expe-rience. On Oct. 15 last year, a reception in my honor was held in Ornelas Gym – I had just been selected the 12th President of East Texas Baptist University.

While most teams would have just skipped the day and rested, these students helped get the place cleared and ready so that they could practice. Such is the disci-pline of excellent teams.

We are excited to be playing another season of volleyball with high expectations for our well-respected program. This promises to be a great year for the Lady Tigers under Head Coach Lyndsay Mashe. Although the media guide gives facts and figures about the women who play and coach, we also hope that you’ll be able to see their hearts as they play the game. We hope you’ll notice their character as well as their competitive drive. And we hope that you know they are as committed to academic pursuits as they are to winning on the field.

At ETBU our student-athletes are student-athletes. These women are not playing for a scholarship, but for the love of the game. And, we play volleyball because we be-lieve it contributes to the educational mission of the University. These students are learning not just in the classrooms, but in team meetings, through diligent practice, by lifting weights and conditioning their bodies, in one-on-one conversations with coaches and fellow players, and on the court. As a University, we’re also committed to the truth found in Scripture that reminds us, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come”- 1 Timothy 4:3. This volleyball team is being fit for success in this life and the life to come. That, to me, is a good reason to cheer them on.

David Weaver is in his 10th year as Sports Informa-tion Director at East Texas Baptist University in 2009-10. A 1995 graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., Weaver is responsible for public

and media relations concerning the entire ETBU athletic department, which covers 10 NCAA-sponsored sports. As S.I.D., Weaver is the official statisti-cian for each sport and also designs and writes media guides for all sports on campus. He also controls the content of the university’s athletic web site at www.etbu.edu, as well as writing a sports information blog for the site. Weaver is a former sports editor at the Marshall News Messenger, where he covered East Texas sports -- including ETBU -- for five years from 1996-2000. While at the News Messenger he earned three Associated Press Managing Editor Awards for his writing, including an article about former Lady Tiger basketball player Queen Olumbo. Weaver became ETBU’s Sports Information Director on June 1, 2000, just a couple of months before the start of the Tigers’ first football season in 50 years. Over the past nine years as S.I.D. he has also worked in the broadcast booth with radio work in football, basketball and softball for ETBU. Away from his duties at ETBU, David enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth baseball and softball with his children. He also enjoys read-ing and writing his his spare time. David and his wife, Jeannie, live in Hallsville, Texas, with their children: son Coby (12), and daughters Melody (10), Abby (2) and Lily (born July 2, 2009).

ETBUETBUEAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY

Academicinstruction at East Texas BaptistUniversity began in 1917 with theinaugural session of a two-year institution known as College of Marshall... The campaign to launch the col-lege had begun in 1911 and was led by William Thomas Tardy, pastor of Marshall’s First Baptist Church. Tardy negotiated the purchase of 100 acres of the original K. M. Van Zandt family plantation for $25,000. Keeping 50 of the 100 acres on Van Zandt Hill in northwest Marshall, the college subdi-vided and sold the remaining property. Marshall’s citizens subscribed another $70,000, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas assumed control of the college, appropriating $40,000 for buildings and furnishings. The trustees applied for and received a charter from the State of Texas in 1912, and Thurman C. Gardner, an early day Baptist Training Union leader, became the first president in 1913.

For the first building, Marshall Hall, contrac-tors broke ground on July 5, 1915. Of neoclassical architecture and completed in 1916, Marshall Hall crowned the highest point in Harrison County. The robust building was a self-contained educational

facility with a ground floor gymnasium, main floor administrative offices, laboratories, and library, third floor classrooms, and a chapel/theatre on the top floor.

The first freshman class registered in 1917 under President Henry Eugene Watters (1916-1918). The college boasted a teaching faculty of nine members. By the academic year 1918-19, some 300 students were enrolled in either a junior college or an academy curriculum. With World War I raging, a student cavalry unit drilled regularly on the college grounds.

New dormitories soon encircled the clas-sic campus quadrangle. In 1924, Dr. Franklin S. Groner, the Secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, conveyed the Baptists’ commitment to assume the college debt if the Marshall Chamber of Commerce would supply $12,500 annu-ally for five years, enabling it to remain open.

Leading the college during the trying days of The Great Depression, Dr. Franklin Groner (1928-42) assumed the presidency and instituted a per-manent endow-

ment program. In 1935, an additional 43 acres were purchased, including the land and buildings of the St. Joseph’s Boys Industrial Orphanage, some of which was converted to men’s housing. In 1938, Baptist lay-man and builder Fred Hale broke ground for Laura Groner Hall, a modern residence hall for women. A reduced replica of Mt. Vernon, the stunning structure stood complete in 1940, its austere construction hav-ing cost only $10,500.

World War II robbed the campus of its men and resources. By 1943, only 137 students remained. In 1944, the trustees, making perhaps the most important decision in the institution’s history, asked the Baptist General Convention of Texas to elevate the college to four-year status and to change the name to East Texas Baptist College.

A former pastor of First Baptist Church, Midland, Texas, Dr. Harvey Daniel Bruce (1942-1960), the college’s ninth president, oversaw a vigor-ous postwar enrollment and building boom. Veterans arrived on campus, many bringing their families, and enrollment briefly surpassed 800. Prefabricated war surplus family housing was erected on the campus perimeter.

The college added Scarborough Chapel in 1948, which was built in the neo-Gothic style. Also added were Feagin Hall, a new men’s residence facility; a cafeteria and student center; and additions to the women’s residence hall, which was renamed for Merle Bruce, wife of the college president. Two ornate, neo-classical buildings were added in the 1950s, Sanderson Hall (now Craig Hall) to house the laboratory sciences departments, and Harvey Daniel Bruce Hall as the new library/administrative com-plex. Keys Gymnasium was built in 1960. In 1961 a new women’s residence hall, named after Evelyn Linebery, with its long portico and roomy plantation-

style architecture, was completed.

Dr. Bruce labored to establish a liberal arts tradition, along with strong degree programs in Bible and religion. His administration’s crown-ing achievement came in 1957 when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation to East Texas Baptist College.

Under Dr. Howard C. Bennett as president (1960-76), the academic program established endur-ing credibility. Dr. Bennett, the former pastor of First Baptist Church, Kilgore, oversaw construction of the new Howard C. Bennett Student Center in 1973.

Dr. Jerry Dawson (1976-85), who had been Graduate Dean at Southwest Texas State University, became the first professional educator to lead the college. By 1982, the postwar “baby boom” peaked and enrollment stood at 920 students. A spacious new president’s home replaced the stately residence that Drs. Bruce and Bennett had occupied. After the opening of the Mamye Jarrett Library in 1979, H. D. Bruce Hall became available for the Religion and Teacher Education departments. Married students occupied several new brick housing units. Charles Fry Hall for Men was opened. As age claimed some of the original college buildings, the older men’s dor-mitory, buildings of the old orphanage, and various frame and prefabricated structures were dismantled during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1984 the University Charter revision changed the institutional name to East Texas Baptist University. However, by 1985, enrollment gains had eroded. During the interim presidency of Dr. Harvey Lewis (1985-86), the University met various deferred maintenance and operating needs.

The former president of two other Baptist institutions from

1961 to 1986, Dr. Robert Craig (1986-1992) launched a build-

ing program of unprecedented proportions, including the Fred Hale Business Building in 1988-89. Other subsequent construction projects were the Jenna Guest Music Building, the Louise Rogers Spiritual Life Center, now known as the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center; major additions to the Bennett Student Center, construction of the Clifford Nelson Murphy Science Hall, and the Mabee Housing Complex.

The untimely death of Dr. Craig in March 1992, only two months prior to his announced retirement, was followed by the leadership of Dr.

Bob E. Riley (1992-Present), who had been President of the Howard County Junior College District in Big Spring, Texas. Under Dr. Riley, the University experienced record student enrollments.

The campus continued to develop under President Riley’s leadership with the 1995 completion of the Dean Healthplex and Ornelas Gymnasium. Fall 1996 found the opening of The Joseph and Louise Ornelas Residential Complex and the renovation of Marshall Hall, which was completed in 1997. Meadows Hall, which houses the Murphy Instructional Technology Center and the Department of Mathematics was reno-vated and occupied begin-

ning with the fall semester of 1999. The University Apartments opened in fall 2002, and the renovation of Scarborough Chapel into Scarborough Hall was complete in January 2004.

Dr. Riley completed his 17th year at ETBU in 2008-09 after having announced his retire-ment in May of 2008. Dr. Dub Oliver was named President-elect of ETBU in the fall of 2008 and assumed the office offi-cially on June 1, 2009.

As the University seeks to streamline academic plan-ning and to con-tinue development of its academic and co-curricular programs, the task remains, as always, to affirm and focus the ETBU mission, to see God active in all its parts, and to sustain faithfully the ethical, spiri-tual, and intellectual foundations of a truly Christian liberal arts education.

Dr. Dub Oliver was elected as the 12th President of East Texas Baptist University by the university Board of Trustees on Oct. 15, 2008. He officially became President

on June 1, 2009, succeeding Dr. Bob E. Riley who retired after 17 years of service to ETBU. Dr. Oliver was Vice President for Student Life at Baylor Uni-versity in Waco, Texas, from 2005-2008. He had been employed in various positions at Baylor for 16 years upon his election as President of ETBU. “After an extensive nation-wide search, Dr. Dub Oliver comes to ETBU very highly recommended to lead this university as its next President,” said Board of Trustees Chair Hal Cornish, who also served as the chair of the Presidential Search Committee. “His credentials as a senior administrator are very extensive and impressive.” Dr. Oliver and his wife, Susie, along with their daughter, Callie, expressed excitement upon joining the ETBU family. “Susie and I are humbled and excited to have this opportunity to serve at East Texas Baptist University,” said Dr. Oliver. “We’re thankful for the Presidential Search Committee, the Board of Trustees, President Bob and Gayle Riley, and the ETBU family who have been so welcoming and encouraging to us.” A native of San Antonio, Texas, Oliver is a graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He holds a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. Oliver earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M as well. He is also a licensed and ordained Baptist minister having served from October 2003 to May 2009 as the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Craw-ford, Texas. Dr. Oliver came to Baylor in April 1992 from Texas A&M Univer-sity to serve as Director of Student Activities. In June 1999, he took on additional responsibilities as the Associate Dean for Campus Life. Then, in June 2001, Dr. Oliver was promoted to be the Dean for Student Development, a post he held until June 2005 when he was named Assistant Vice President for Student Life. For a year he served as Interim Vice President for Student Life before being named the Vice President for Student Life. Dr. Oliver has also served Baylor as a Visiting Professor in the Hankamer School of Business, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education, and Interim University Chaplain. He served in the United States Air Force stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in the late 1980’s. Before entering graduate school, he was a third-grade teacher in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Dr. Oliver’s wife, Susie, is was an adjunct faculty member and full-time cheerleader coach at Baylor. Their daughter, Callie, will be a senior in high school in 2009-10. “Dr. Oliver comes very highly recommended by the Provost of Baylor, Dr. Randall O’Brien, who has recently been named President of Carson-Newman College,” said Cornish. “We believe Dr. Oliver will be the ideal person to lead an already outstanding Christian uni-versity into the 21st century.” “East Texas Baptist University, near the conclusion of its first cen-tury of service and at the beginning of a new century of faithfulness, is well positioned for increased excellence in all its endeavors. In doing so, the University will, by God’s grace, become an even brighter light on the hill to a world that is desperately in need,” said Dr. Oliver.

Mashe continues to keep the Lady Tigers near the top of the American Southwest Conference standings. Under Mashe’s direction ETBU has either won or shared the American Southwest Confer-ence East Division championship two out of the last three years. The Lady Tigers now have a streak of eight straight conference tourna-ment appearances, and ETBU played in its first conference tournament title match since the 2003 season last fall. But none of that satisfies Mashe or her players. Entering the 2009 season, the team has reloaded with a solid core of talented veterans returning to go along with perhaps the most talented and deepest recruiting class Mashe has brought in over the last four years. Under Mashe the last two seasons, ETBU has led the nation in home attendance average. The excitement of the program’s fans is due in large part to the success on the court -- two ASC East championships the last three years, 63 wins in that span, and a conference-best eight straight trips to the conference’s postseason champion-ship tournament. Mashe has been able to continue building on the tradition she helped establish at ETBU as a player. She joined the Lady Tigers prior to the 2003 season after playing her first two seasons of eligibility at Panola College, and helped lead ETBU to the last of three straight ASC titles in 2003. Mashe, formerly Lyndsay Simpson during

her playing days at ETBU, earned All-American Southwest Conference recognition as a player in 2003 and 2004, first as a defensive special-ist/libero in ‘03 and then as the Lady Tiger setter in her senior year of 2004. She still ranks third all-time on the Lady Tigers’ career assists list, with 1,524. Before joining ETBU, Mashe won back-to-back all-conference recognition as Panola’s setter. Prior to that she was a highly-touted setter coming out of Pine Tree High School in Longview, Texas, where she earned all-state honors for the tradition-rich Lady Pirates. After graduating in May 2005 with a B.S.E., Mashe took her first head coaching job at Atlanta (TX) High School and guided the Lady Rabbits to a 24-10 record and a playoff run that went two rounds deep in Class 3A. Former ETBU coach Suzanne Wingrove, who won three ASC titles in five seasons as head coach from 2001-05 and who recruited Lyndsay to ETBU, resigned in January of 2006 to spend more time with family. Mashe was then hired as head coach at her alma mater less than a year after gradua-tion, and she quickly set about building a reputa-tion as one of the brightest young coaches in the league. In her first season as coach in 2007, Mashe guided ETBU back from an 0-6 start to the season to win 19 games and finish as co-cham-pion in the ASC East Division. It was ETBU’s first division championship in any sport since the 2004 season, and the Lady Tigers’ first division volleyball championship since 2002. Lyndsay’s husband, Kris, works on her staff at ETBU as volleyball assistant coach. Lyndsay and Kris have one son, Brady (2).

Lady Tiger volleyball assistant Kris Mashe will be in his year on staff in the

2009 season. Mashe joined the ETBU staff shortly after his wife Lyndsay was named head coach in February of 2006. The Lady Tigers won the program’s first American Southwest Conference East Division championship since 2002 in his first sea-son on staff, winning 19 of their final 25 games and going 15-2 in conference play.

A native of Longview, Texas, Kris at-tended Kilgore College and the Univer-sity of North Texas. He has played both outdoor and indoor volleyball for over 10 years and has coached East Texas Volleyball Club for five years while also serving as a member of the club’s board of directors. Kris helps coach the Lady Tiger of-fense, working particularly with hitters and blockers. He also assists with recruit-ing. Beautiful and cozy as the home of ETBU’s indoor athletics programs, Ornelas Gymnasium is one of the top basketball/volleyball arenas in the American Southwest Conference. Ornelas Gymnasium, as a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, was built in 1995 and replaced Keys Gymnasium as the home to ETBU basketball. Al-though Keys still stands as an intramural facility, it is on the east end of the complex that now includes Ornelas Gym on the west side and Dean Healthplex in the middle. Ornelas Gym has bowl-stype seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes bleacher seats at floor level,

reserved chairback in a mezzanine level and upper level general admission bleachers. ETBU students are allowed in the floor bleach-ers, typically across from the Tiger bench, to give the home fans a nice up-close view of the action. It also provides a nice homecourt advantage for the Tigers. In the summer of 2007, the gym floor received a facelift. ETBU’s trademark tiger-eyes logo was added to both baselines, and the floor was complete-ly refinished with ETBU, ASC and NCAA logos added. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, Dean Healthplex was also constructed in

1995. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean, the healthplex opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym and houses state-of-the-art equipment for physi-cal fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters and both free and machine weightlifting stations. Dean Healthplex also has four racquetball courts. All healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students. The complex also includes offices for athletic director, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball coaches, as well as kinesiology faculty.

Kent Reeves completed his 12th year as full-time athletic director at East Texas Baptist University in 2008-09. Since stepping down as the all-time winningest coach in Lady Tiger basketball in 1997 to become full-time AD, Reeves has guided ETBU’s transformation from NAIA

and NCAA Division II status to full membership within NCAA Division III. Under his watch, the program has ballooned to 10 varsity sports from the five that existed when he became athletic director on June 1, 1997. “We’ve added football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s cross country, and we’re looking to add men’s and women’s tennis,” says Reeves when looking back over his first decade as athletic director. “I’d say another one of hte real positive things I’m proud we’ve been able to accomplish is that we have also built some first-class athletic facilities as well as making nice upgrades to our exist-ing facilities.” Reeves joined the ETBU coaching staff in 1987 as the head coach for women’s basketball. Taking over a program that was 10 years old at the time, Reeves quickly built an NAIA national title contender that averaged over 20 wins per season in his decade on the bench. In his 10 seasons as head women’s basket-ball coach, Reeves posted 206 wins and his teams won five Big State Conference championships and made nine postseason appearances. He stepped down following the 1996-97 season to become the university’s full-time athletic director while also taking on another challenge. As part of the university’s expansion of the athletic program, Reeves agreed to also become the head coach of a softball program that would begin play in the spring of 1998 as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference. His first recruiting class produced an eventual six All-Americans over the next four years, and Reeves piled up 83 wins in three full seasons as head softball coach. In his third season, in 2000, the Lady Tigers won the first American Southwest Conference championship in the history of ETBU athletics since the university had become a member of the ASC and Division III in 1998. Following that season, Reeves gave up coaching to focus on his athletic director duties. Football was added in the fall of 2000, along with men’s and cross country, giving ETBU 10 varsity athletic sports. When Reeves arrived at ETBU in 1987 as women’s basketball coach, only three programs -- men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball -- existed on campus. But in his first four years as athletic director, the university had added soft-ball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and football. Reeves went back into coaching in 2004, when he had to step in and take over the softball program once more due to a mid-year coaching change. Taking over a senior-laden program that had won the ASC championship every year since he’d left, Reeves coached the Lady Tigers to a school-record 41 wins as well as helping ETBU attain its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in any sport. He also guided the Lady Tigers to a fifth straight conference championship that season. He immediately stepped down again following that season, but came back to take over the program for a third time in the summer of 2005. After coaching the softball team in 2006 and 2007, Reeves once again took off his coaching hat to assume athletic director-only duties. However, in his six total seasons in the dugout, Reeves compiled a 183-84-1 mark and is now the university’s all-time winningest coach in two different sports. Reeves is also very active in the Marshall community, serving vice presi-dent of the Marshall Lions Club as well as serving as a deacon at Central Baptist Church. In his time away from the office, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and work-ing in his yard. Reeves received his Bachelor of Science in Education from John Brown University and also holds a Master of Science in Education from Arkansas State University. Kent and his wife, Mary Beth, have two daughters, Kendra and Taylor. Taylor is a sophomore at Baylor University, while Kendra is married to Austin Skipworth.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate

athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Confer-

ence includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate

Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s pres-ent group of 15 college and universities, the ASC en-

compasses institutions shar-ing similar educational and

athletic philosophies. Spreading across the 422,060 square miles

of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the ASC offers student-athletes competition

in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement to conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference embodies a multidimension-al mission aimed at creating an environment characterized by oppor-tunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for its conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athlet-ics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administra-tors access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhance-ment opportunities. Marshall“A Texas Treasure”

East Texas Bap�st University is located in Marshall, Texas, an historic city of 25,000 nestled in the scenic piney woods of East Texas. It is part of a larger met-ropolitan area of Longview, Texas, and Shreveport, Louisiana, and is located 150 miles east of Dallas, on Interstate 20. Marshall is in the center of a recrea�onal and tourist region, and is near the Caddo Lake recrea�onal area.

The city itself was founded in 1841, and by 1850, it was the seventh-largest city in Texas. A�er the 1860 census, Marshall had risen to fourth largest in the state, in the most prosperous county in Texas. A�er the Civil War, the city becane known as “Gateway to Texas,” when the Texas and Pacific Railroad provided transcon�nental railway service to the west.

Marshall’s renaissance was due largely to the vast expansion of the T & P opera�ons which brought an enormous influx of new se�lers and railroad employees, including many skilled cra�smen and ar�sans for the railroad’s sprawling shops.

The 1901 Harrison County Courthouse is the third government structure to occupy the square of land donated in 1841 for a “Temple of Jus�ce” by Marshall founder Peter Whetstone.

Marshall is surrounded by natural beauty, just minutes away from historic Caddo Lake and the majes�c Lake O’ The Pines. The city is also home to three major fes�vals annually -- Stagecoach Days, held the third weekend in May; FireAnt Fes�val, held the second weekend in October; and the world-famous Wonderland of Lights, which is held from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
