J o s h u a E a r g l e Head Coach@ETBUCoachEargle 2nd Year

East Texas is home for Joshua Eargle as the third head football coach for ETBU since the program was started back up in 2000. In Janu-ary 2013 he was selected to rebuild the pro-gram and brings NCAA Division I and II coach-ing experience to the Tiger program. His roots are originally from East Texas in Sulphur Springs as he has made coaching stops in Loui-siana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Eargle is very familiar with East Texas and re-cruited this area for Nicholls State, the Univer-sity of Arkansas-Monticello, and Ouachita Bap-tist University. He has also coached in the area as the defensive coordinator for Hallsville High School in 2011 when they were Bi-District fi-nalists. Coming from Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he was a Texas Sports Writers 4A All-State lineman, he played for his uncle, Chuck King, before moving on to the University of Memphis where he was a three-year letterman.

Coaching both sides of the ball, Eargle has been an offensive and defensive coordina-tor in his young career. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State (NCAA DII) and served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas-Monticello (NCAA DII) in 2010.

Post season games have also graced Eargle at the NCAA Division I level along with conference championships. He has coached in four bowl games, winning two as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in the 2007 GMAC Bowl and the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. He took part in the 2010 Capital One Bowl on the staff at Louisiana State University and the 2003 Liber-ty Bowl at Southern Mississippi. As a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, he was a part of the 2003 Conference USA Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. In his second stint at Southern Mississippi, they won the Confer-ence USA-East Championship in 2006 at 6-2.

He has made coaching stops at the NCAA Divi-sion I BCS (Bowl Championship Series) level at Southern Mississippi (’03, ’04, ’06) and Louisi-ana State University (’09). In 2007 and 2008, he coached at the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Series) level at Nicholls State. Making stops at NCAA Division II programs, he has also coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State (’12), the University of Arkansas-Monticel-lo (’10), and Ouachita Baptist University (’05).

Under his guidance, he has had 10 players earn first-team all-conference and 17 players earn an all-conference award. At every pro-gram he has coached for, at least one player has earned a first-team all-conference award.

The 2001 graduate of the University of Mem-phis was an offensive guard that earned the Top Tiger Award which was presented by head coach Tommy West. He finished with a degree in Exercise and Sport Sci-ence. He then earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He is mar-ried to Kristen and they have two daughters.

“This is a great hire for East Texas Baptist. Josh was a tremendous addition to our staff

when he joined us for the 2009 season. He will bring great enthusiasm and passion

along with a tremendous work ethic and outstanding football knowledge to

East Texas Baptist. It’s very gratifying to see guys who work hard and do things the right way get rewarded for their efforts. I’m very

happy for Josh and his family. He will do a great job there.”

WARBINGTON BEST IN D3Josh Warbington led the nation in passing yards with 3,580 yards (358 per game) while also throwing for 30 touchdowns and completing over 66% of his passes. His season high in yards was 426 at Texas Lutheran and his season high in touchdowns was five against Millsaps. He had five 400 yard passing games including three in a row against Louisiana College, Sul Ross State and Hardin-Simmons. He finished the year breaking a combined 24 records that include individual game and season and team game and season.

Because of his play, he was a semi-finalist for the NCAA Division III Player of the Year award (Gagliardi Trophy). He is the first player from ETBU to be a semi-finalist. He was also a USA Football Network All-American, D3Football.com All-South Region third team selection, and an All-ASC second team selec-tion.

OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT vs. MILLSAPSETBU set new program records with 68 points and 715 yards of offense against Millsaps. The Majors went 9-1 in 2013 and came off a win over Mt. St. Joseph before coming to Ornelas Stadium. ETBU’s big night started with Warbington’s career long pass-ing touchdown—a 78 yard strike to R.J. Hester. Less than three minutes later ETBU got back on the board as Warbington hit Stephen Alfred for a 34 yard touchdown. Tyler Bates got in on the excitement as he threw his lone touchdown pass of the season to Roy Butler, good for 36 yards. Warbington tied the mark he set in the first quarter with another 78 yard touchdown pass, this one to Kendall Roberson. War-bington threw two more touchdowns—one to Bates and one to Evan Simpson. With a firm 54-15 lead at that point, Brandon Darjean scored on an 85 yard interception return for a touchdown, his first career interception and his first touchdown. Johnny Garrett capped off the night by scoring his first ETBU touch-down to make a final score of 68-15.

IMPACT OFFENSIVE NEWCOMERSStephen Alfred came to ETBU with only one year of eligibility left making it a year to remember. He led the team with 1,210 receiving yards which is a new single season record. He led the team with four mul-tiple touchdown games and had seven 100+ yard games. His highest yardage game was at Louisiana College with 171 yards, followed closely by his per-formance at Texas Lutheran with 165 yards and two touchdowns.

Kendall Roberson came in and started at running back in the season opener. After playing through an injury the next two weeks, Roberson got back on track with two huge games back to back at Texas Lutheran and against Howard Payne. He rushed for 172 yards against Texas Lutheran and topped that mark with 182 yards and three touchdowns against Howard Payne. He finished the season with 629 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. He also had 196 yards receiving on 18 catches, with a receiv-ing touchdown against Millsaps.

Xavier Davis became a disruptive force on the in-terior defensive line, totaling 30 total tackles on the season with eight tackles for loss. He added four sacks, including a season high two against Sul Ross State. His three quarterback hurries against Howard Payne set a season high.

Desmond Oliver led the team in sacks with six, in-cluding a season high three against Southwestern. He also forced two fumbles in the game and had 3.5 tackles for loss. His season high in tackles was 10 against Millsaps, with 1.5 tackles for loss.

All-ASC HONOREESIn a year where many school records fell, twelve play-ers were given ASC honors at the end of the year. The prolific offense had three members named to the ASC first team. Receivers Tyler Bates and Stephen Alfred both made it after they both had thousand yard seasons, two of only three players to gain 1,000 or more receiving yards this year. Alfred was first in the conference with 1,210 yards and Bates second with 1,156. Kendall Roberson also was also named to the first team after finishing third in the conference in yards with 629 in just nine games. He was second in yards per game with 69.9, trailing only Kerry Sloan of Hardin-Simmons.

Joining them on the second team were quarterback Josh Warbington, receiver Roy Butler, left tackle Charles Williams, center Alex Shetter and corner-back Dominique Bailey.

Warbington rewrote the record book at ETBU in just one year. He set the season mark in passing yards with 3,580 and in touchdowns with 30, as well as completion percentage with 66.24%. He owns the all-time completion percentage record at ETBU with 65.4% and the career touchdown record with 40 in less than two seasons as the starting quarterback. He is second is passing yards with 4,760 and third in completions and attempts. He set career highs single game touchdowns with five against Millsaps, single game attempts and completions with 56 and 37, re-spectively, against Hardin-Simmons. Butler caught 43 passes for 458 yards and four touchdowns. He had a season high nine catches for 131 yards against Austin College. He scored against Austin College, Millsaps, Howard Payne and Louisi-ana College.

Garcia started all 10 games for ETBU and started 30 straight games going back to his sophomore year. McNeill was second on the team in rushing with 562 yards, which was fifth best in the conference. He scored six touchdowns and had a long run of 61 yards. Jaynes and Davis both had four sacks from the defenensive line, and Jaynes added 8.5 tackles for loss, which was 13th in the conference, followed closesly by Davis’ eight, which was 15th best.
