Message from the Executive Director

It is with gratitude that we thank Dan Gunderson for his many years ofservice as Board Chair. Claudia McClain will take over the reins thisyear. Dan has served as leader of this organization since 2007 and histireless energy and devotion to our schools through the Foundation is tobe celebrated! Claudia and Dan are pictured above accepting a

$10,620.00 “down payment” check from Union Bank this past August. “Strikeouts forSchools” was a joint promotion effort between the Everett AquaSox and Union Bank thissummer. The season ended with 625 strikouts which equated to $12,500.Dan and Claudia were very proud to accept this tremendous gift on behalf of the Foun-dation that will give financial support to our students this year.

Our organization continues great growth this year with the addition of eight new boardmembers. We welcomed Dr. Molly Ringo, EPS Liaison; Janet Gillingham, Principal atHeatherwood Middle School; Bryan Hendrickson, Waddell & Reed; Wendy McClure,City of Everett; Kristine Petereit, Community Representative; Linda Shockey, ShockeyPlanning Group; Eileen Simmons, Director of the Everett Public Library; and TedWenta, YMCA of Snohomish County. Graham Kerr signs autographs after the 2011 Benefit Breakfast

Graham Kerr charms crowd at the2011 Benefit Breakfast

Thanks to the generosity of our community and corporate donors,we are pleased to announce another wonderful year of support forthe staff and students of the Everett Public Schools.

Over $100,000 was raised at the March 10th Annual BenefitBreakfast sponsored by the Everett Public Schools Foundation.

We were treated to a great presentation by Graham Kerr as hetalked about his later life passion of building childhood nutritionawareness through our school breakfast and lunch programs. Histheory is that this positive exposure to a variety of fruits and veg-etables will create better buy-in for our kids and in turn bring thismessage home to their parents. After his presentation, he wasable to autograph his new book “Growing at the Speed of Life”which sold like hotcakes! (Healthy ones of course!)

Mark your calendars for next year’s event on March 8th, 2012 atthe Hansen Conference Center.

EPS Foundation awards an annual scholarship and the Superintendent chooses art for permanent district display

Cascade High School junior Kyle Schuman’s piece enti-tled Bunk Bed Fort was chosen for the 2011 Superintend-ent Purchase Award. Each year, the superintendentchooses a work of art from the High School Art Showthat is purchased for permanent display in the EducationService Center. The cubist style of the piece is “reminis-cent of Picasso, and so different from others on perma-nent display” remarked Dr. Cohn.

Purchasing the art is made possible by the EPS Founda-tion which also sponsors the art show and family recep-tion. In addition, the Foundation also honored therecipient of the EPS Foundation Visual Arts Scholarship. This year’s winner of the $1,000 scholarship sponsoredby the Howarth Trust is Aly Weir of Cascade HighSchool. Aly plans to attend the University of Washing-ton to continue her art studies with an interest in pursu-ing graphic design.

The Everett Public Schools Foundation is proud to spon-sor this celebration of the arts in education each year!

All Day Kindergarten Tuition support

grows significantly this year

All Day Kindergarten tuition support grew from $35,000 to$45,000 this year thanks to the EverTrust Foundation’s sig-nificant increase in support. The Foundation accepted arecord number of applications for tuition assistance lastMay and this increased need was met. 26 children nowhave the benefit of a full day of instruction designed to helpour children with their social and academic readiness tolearn. There are many families that just cannot afford thecost of the All Day Program. The Everett Public SchoolsFoundation became involved in providing tuition assistance9 years ago when we learned of the significant impact anall-day program has on academic achievement, both in theshort term as well as in the long term.

This support helps children from all backgrounds and abili-ties get the additional assistance they need to become profi-

cient learners by the time they reach first grade. Familiesbenefit as well with one or both parents having the opportu-nity to work outside of the home and/or attend school tofurther their education. A parent sent this thank you note tous:

“Thank you so much for the assistance that your organiza-tion has provided to my family. Your assistance in payingfor Claire’s all day kindergarten tuition has eased my fi-nancial burden. With limited resources and your help, Ihave been able to secure a solid educational future for her. This has also allowed me to focus my time, energy, andmoney on my own education as I progress toward self suffi-ciency.” Thank you, S.P..

Our appreciation goes to our donors and grant makers, TheEverTrust Foundation and the Tulalip Tribes Foundation formaking this program a reality.
