A paradigm shift
• The emergence of a ‘Third Platform’ driven by mobile devices,
cloud services, social technologies and Big Data.
• Cloud and Mobile will be the defining technologies of the
decade with the user interface through Smart devices and data
analytics.
• New internet-based business models will predominate e.g.
aggregation, social business models.
Importance of Cloud Computing
• Cloud is an enabling technology across industry sectors e.g.
Food sector and cloud technology
• Companies must ‘embrace cloud’ to remain competitive
• Growth in ICT services sector is reliant on the internet and
cloud
• Cloud is at the centre of much of the employment creation in
the ICT services sector.
• Skills gap - the industry is growing faster than the availability of
a cloud-educated workforce. Universities have a role to play in
producing graduates to meet this need.
Technology Centres
Technology Centres
• Ireland’s largest initiative to support industry-led research,
development and innovation, to:
accelerate exploitation of new technologies
bridge the gap between research and commercialisation
introduce companies to research expertise in HEIs
generate innovative technologies
new sources of industrial growth and job creation in Ireland
• 4 out of 14 Technology Centres relate to software
Cloud Technology Centres
• A resource for new starts, SMEs and large corporations
• Accelerate the rate at which they innovate and consume cloud
products through:
– Research support
– Knowledge dissemination (conferences, workshops etc.
– Networking
– Collective problem-solving
• Address ‘business’ cloud issues through leveraging the
business research and knowledge at the participating 3rd level
institutions
