A girl full of soberness and solemnity joined Dow batch of ‘79. After herschooling from BMB School and Intermediate from Karachi College for Womenshe joined the Dow ’79 Class with a delay along with Zabinda Mashriqui andRiffat. She maintained a very shy, studious stance and kept a low profile dealingwith the classmates.

Idrees Aidhi perhaps was endowed with some special clairvoyance that hecultivated a relationship starting from “Hello Hi’ in the first year to a serious noteof marriage proposal by the time final year began. The nitty-gritty was workedout by families and Rukhsana was formally engaged to Idrees during their housejob. Their marriage was solemnized in the most unpretentious of ways in 1981.

The time of appraisal started for Rukhsana as she entered the precincts of a newhome. She started general practice. Idrees was a man bubbling with drive anddreamed an unambiguous plan for the future. He went to England. In our partof the world marriage is not a contract between two persons but a deal struckbetween two families.

The problems for Rukhsana back home were diverse and multidimensional.She had to deal with poverty, the dynamics of a poverty ridden family, oldtraditions practiced through generations, unending rituals and harsh groundrealities. Rukhsana managed to join Idrees in England with young Zeeshan in herlap.

Idrees was doing training in Ophthalmology. Rukhsana ensured that he had qualitytime for studies, courses, workshops and learning skills in the shortest possibletime. Both had to return to Pakistan on completions of Idrees’ fellowship for theailing mother-in-law direly needed the services of Rukhsana. They returned toPakistan, ignoring the lucrative job offers in Saudia. There was one more additionto the family. Mahreen, who arrived during the stay in England.

Rukhsana made her way to dermatology as Idrees joined government service inPakistan. A transfer to Hyderabad made life miserable for the family, whenIdrees had to commute between the two cities daily on a bus. In due courseFatima also entered as a new family member and Rukhsana took over theresponsibility of education of the children with full dedication and enthusiasm.

She ensured they all stood on sound footings in basic education. A time offurther testing came that let Rukhsana show her mettle when Idrees had acoronary bypass surgery and a dreadful osteomyelitis. She stood like a pillar ofrock to support the family physically and expressively.

Perseverance, sense of responsibility and the belief in oneself were the traits ofRukhsana for she had a lioness’ share in the ultimate achievements of thefamily. Idrees excelled in ophthalmology and gradually became a leadingpractitioner in town. The building of a State- of-the art centre of excellence inOphthalmology in DOTS complex of Dow entirely by his own efforts is a unique featin history when Idrees handed over the keys to Dow Operation Theater Complex ofDow University as a gift to his Alma Mater. This project materialized only due tothe incessant support extended by Rukhsana.

How the children have excelled in life. Look at the carrier of Zeeshan. He istouching the skyscrapers now. He joined medicine and quit in the middle.Following a free will and the confidence provided by the parents he did his BBAand a BA in Economic from the Business School at UT Austin. He was picked up byJP Morgan on his completion of studies where he made money to go to UK andstudy Law. He got his LLB from City University London and did his Bar fromLincoln’s Inn London.

On his return home he joined a well known Barrister Khalid Anwar where he stillworks. Look at the achievement of the girls. Simply amazing! Mahreen andFatima are very bright doctors. Mehreen got into St Joseph’s and then toDMC, then Internship in AKUH and is now at Tuft’s University Boston for aresearch job. Fatima got into AKUH where she graduated in 2010. She is doingher USMLE exams and has taken a research job.

Rukhsana is a keen learner despite her busy home life. She attendscourses, clinical meetings and remains in touch with medicine. She has beenmaintaining an amiable and simple personality.

She has proved to be an exemplary wife, an exceptional mother, a singularfamily person and a great soul-mate. The famous feminist slogan has beenproved to be true Behind every SUCCESSFUL man, there is a woman.“

Interesting reading about Rukhsana and Idrees's life and their family's hardships and achievements. A beautiful pictorial writeup. The quality of write-ups continues to go higher and higher. I looked up Idrees's 2010 writeup -- no repetitions. Congratulations to your family and best wishes. JavaidPS: Tried very hard to find a web dictionary to define QUOSQUICENTENNIAL, no luck -- of course it must be referring to 125.
