When he came to Dow from DJ College he was a tremendously effortlesspersonality. Very serious academically and very solemn in character. Hebelonged to a family which had its root in Delhi. Renowned Surgeon Hameed ofJPMC was his maternal uncle. His colloquial speech carried the tone of DelhiWalas. While in Dow, Mudassir had a transformation in personality. He joined“Tablighi Jamaat‟ and instantly the facial appearance and body outfit changed.He became very devout in faith and the beard grew in size. The parents were inan advanced age of dependency; Mudassir was very agile and devoted in theircare to the extent that he never uttered a word of dissent. Few may know thathe almost self-rusticated himself from medical studies in the first year based onreligious grounds which precluded desecrating dead human bodies.

Little did he know that this futuristic viewpoint would be adopted by mostmodern day medical teaching institutions? Doing individual cadavericdissections to learn anatomy have now become a matter of the past almostuniversally. Graduation followed house job in Medicine / Surgery and thenMudassir dedicated himself to Cardiology. The Cardiac CatheterizationLaboratory opened in Civil Hospital Karachi and Mudassir was heartily involvedin the business of interventional cardiology. Once Professor Sharif Chowdharyretired, the affairs of the Cardiology Department brought Mudassir to theforefront. He joined the Health Department of Sindh Government and wasgiven charge of the Unit.

He did a Diploma in Cardiology and started chamber practiceat Taj Complex. Mudassir was a God-fearing, well-liked and acompetent cardiologist. He was a tolerant listener to the woes ofhis patients. As the patients would ventilate their complaintsMudassir would adopt a style of meditation with eyes closed andwould just utter a long “Jee” to vouch that he was listening. Astime went by, the politicized air of Civil Hospital and theshenanigans of the administration perturbed Mudassir. Themagnitude of the problems compounded over the years andultimately he took a major decision. Mudassir took long leave andwent to Qatar as an Interventional Cardiologist. A few yearspassed and his whereabouts were lost. Almost after a decade thenews surfaced that Mudassir Ali was found in the United States.He began a new lease of life. Very quietly he did Residency inMedicine and was absorbed in the health delivery system. It wasthe „magnanimity‟ of the structure that it accommodates anybodywho is painstaking and willing to abide by the set of rules.Mudassir is working in Troy, Michigan as an Internist.

There has been a new transformation in Mudassir physically. Beard trimmed tosize, jeans and jacket have replaced the Shalwar Qameez. Daimee was not aknown identity linked to him, while he was in Pakistan. Perhaps this addition is areflection of the „long-lasting‟ peace of mind that he has tasted and enjoyed inthe States. Mudassir still carries the „evocative smile‟ always seen to adorn hisface.

Shoaib, Thanks again for enlightening us about the whereabouts of our classmates. Troy is quite a ways from Raiwind, that is where I would have haveplaced Muddassir if it weren't for you. Muddassir, Congratulations on being POW and the new persona. Hopefully, this persona is 'daimee'. It suits you better. I would love to hear your version of this beautiful transformation.
