International Summer at GW English for Academic Purposes Want to get a head start on your studies and life as a student at GW? Need to strengthen your academic writing, research, and communication skills? Undergraduate and graduate international students applying to degree programs at GW who are non-native speakers of English are invited to enroll in summer English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. Students have the option of living as part of an international student community at our Foggy Bottom campus in the heart of Washington, DC. Our campus is accessible by public transit and within walking distance from the White House, Smithsonian Institution, and the World Bank. Residence halls are staffed by full-time program assistants who help students integrate into GW by providing social and cultural programs. These include sessions with admissions and career representatives, site visits to cultural institutions, and day trips to nearby sites. Students have full access to university facilities, libraries, fitness centers, computer labs, and student health services. For Undergraduate Students:AMERICAN MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES: WASHINGTON, DCA writing-intensive course designed to represent the pedagogy of the American university academic experience through critical reading, inquiry, and discussion. Students examine Washington, DC’s, rich history and culture through both academic readings and opportunities to tap into the real resources of the city.

ACADEMIC COMMUNICATIONA diverse set of classroom activities and assignments will help students understand the U.S. classroom culture, assess different communicative contexts, develop tools and strategies for oral communication, and upgrade fluency and confidence in spoken English.

For graduate Students:ACADEMIC WRITING AND RESEARCH I & IIStudents develop academic papers that are cohesive, logical, and convincing, and that improve their academic vocabulary, grammar, and usage. Course content will also focus on language development for academic fields of study.

ACADEMIC COMMUNICATIONStudents will develop listening and note-taking skills, expand communicative vocabulary, lead class discussions, and prepare and deliver both informal and formal presentations. Specific communicative tasks and materials will be linked to students’ field of study when possible.
