If you're planning to leave your job, mind that you don't burn any bridges on the way out thedoor. It's never good to leave a job in a bad way and without proper notice. It will take themanager time to fill your spot, and even if you haven't been treated exactly the way youshould have been, you should take the high road when leaving. It's always a bad idea to quit in a huff or to become overwhelmed and leave immediately. Hereare a list of don'ts for quitting: • Don't send your boss an e-mail and then walk out the door • Don't walk out in the middle of a workday never to return • Don't say nasty things before you go• Don't leave the company hurting as revenge for poor treatment you have received • Don't leave while the boss is on vacation • Don't leave your keys on the boss's deskThe best tactic is to leave as graciously as possible. Let your boss know you are planning toleave and give decent notice. You'll be glad you did later.

BRIDGE BURNING IS A BAD IDEA WHEN QUITTING

ORLDIDE

People in industrialized nations across the globe are worried aboutretirement—but they’re not doing much about it, a study by TheHartford Financial Services Group has found. The second annualinternational retirement survey by The Hartford (www.thehartford.com)polled more than 6,500 consumers age 45 and older in the UnitedKingdom, the United States, Germany, Japan and South Korea. Therespondents expressed common concerns about living comfortably andsecurely in retirement. Here are some of the findings:• In Japan, 87 percent expressed at least some concerns about havingenough money in retirement, while 52 percent said they were“extremely” or “very” concerned.• In the United States, 79 percent reported having at least someconcerns about their retirement.• In Germany, 69 percent said they had some concerns; in the UnitedKingdom, the number was 66 percent; and in South Korea, 65 percentexpressed this concern.• Despite great numbers of people reporting these concerns, few havetaken action to improve their finances for retirement in the past year.Only 30 percent reported having taken action in both Japan and SouthKorea, 38 percent in Germany, 49 percent in the United Kingdom and58 percent in the United States.• Having enough money to enjoy one’s life was reported as a keyconcern in some countries, while less so in others: 46 percent in theUnited Kingdom, 43 percent in the United States, 25 percent in Japanand only 12 percent in South Korea.• Concerns over being able to afford health care was reported at 62percent in South Korea, 30 percent in Germany, 28 percent in theUnited States, 26 percent in Japan, but only 7 percent in the UnitedKingdom where most people have access to publicly financed healthcare.• In the United States, one in two people say they plan to work in theircurrent job as long as possible, slow down but continue working, or starta business or other venture while retired.

“Around the world, adults who’ve worked their entire lives havediffering visions for what they want their retirement to look like, yetunfortunately they struggle to make that vision a reality,” said LizZlatkus, Hartford Life co-chief operating officer and president of itsinternational wealth management division. “The Hartford’s researchpoints to a tremendous need for financial education and professionaladvice about investing for long-term goals.”

Worrying is Not DoingAre you worrying about something you need to do? If you are worrying

about something, a project or something you need to take care of at home,

itʼs a good idea to keep in mind that merely worrying about something is not

doing something. It may sound idiotic, but reminding yourself of this

occasionally can help you work through procrastination and avoidance

when it comes to dealing with things youʼd rather just go away.

For instance, many first time job hunters make this mistake when they

graduate from college and are trying to enter the work world. They sit

around and fret about how hard it is to get a job, and they keep the focus

on the disconcerting fact that they do not know how to find a job. The truth

is of course that no one really knows how to get a job until after theyʼve

done it once or twice. New job seekers often allow themselves to feel that

by worrying, they are actually looking for a job. What theyʼre really doing is

thinking about looking for the job. And they are wearing themselves out by

participating in this very draining mental game.

The next time you find yourself worrying

instead of doing, try writing down what you

have done toward resolving your problem

or attaining your goal. In the case of job

hunters, they might see that they really

havenʼt been sending out too many

résumés or making very many phone

calls. In the same way, you can evaluate

whether you are really making

action-based efforts to achieve what

needs to be done. If you find that

instead youʼve been doing a lot of

thinking and worrying about what

you need to do, just accept it,

and promise yourself to

take at least one step

every day toward your

goal. And write it

down, so you can see

for yourself what you

have done, and

other steps you

might try.

You’ll want to answer questions to the fullest of your ability. Inorder to do this, think about what you may be asked before theinterview and prepare your answers accordingly. You may evenwant to setup a practice interview with a friend or family memberto test your skills. It is useful to have a game plan for answering. I like to use what iscalled the “STAR” approach. Do this by describing the SITUATIONthat you were in or TASK you needed to accomplish, the ACTIONyou took, focusing on yourself and your skills even if you were in agroup, and the RESULT of your actions. How did everything turn outin the end?
