Jobs for Maine’s Graduates ReceivesGrant from Walmart Foundation

Your boss just asked you to do something, and because you wanted to make her happy, you saidyes, but now that you're back at your desk, you're steaming because you really don't have time todo what is already expected of you, let alone take on an additional responsibility. So what doyou do? According to Bonnie Lowe in a piece titled “When and how to say I just can't do it!” on theIncomeFlex Web site, it's normal to want to say yes to our superiors when we really need to sayno. Try to think of your boss's perspective-she's probably crazy busy herself and not keepingtrack of everything you are doing. And when you told her you could do the project, she probablydidn't give it a second thought. This is all likely to weigh heavily on the relationship you andyour boss have, according to Lowe. You might start stressing and hurrying, making mistakes andmissing your deadlines. So the bottom line is, you're going to have to tell your boss that as much as you'd like to help herout on this one, you just can't right now. Lowe says a good strategy is to ask your boss to helpyou prioritize what you have to do. That will give the two of you a chance to sit down and lookat the reality of your schedule. It's likely your boss will acknowledge that reality when facedwith the facts you provide, and you won't find yourself having to make excuses about your workfurther down the line.

PRESENTED BY:

Enhancing your career can depend on how ready youare to take advantage of opportunity when it presentsitself. That means that you need to be ready tointroduce yourself quickly to people you might run intocasually in the office or in other business settings.Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?”

on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he hasseveral versions of his own introduction prepareddepending on audience, environment and need.

Myatt says that a good introduction imbues youwith credibility and confidence and allows you totell others what you do and how you are workingtoward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces,or meeting needs the company has pinpointed foritself. And Myatt says you should be able to do thisin 50 words or less.

So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My nameis Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. Ispecialize in making sure new clients arecomfortable in their knowledge about our servicesbefore they commit their money to us. And thisyear, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percentclient satisfaction.”

Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use itwhen the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments canopen doors to a bigger future.

Data from the State of the State’s Health Workforce:Aligning Resources to Meet Maine’s Needs By Employment Times Staff with information provided by the Maine Department of Labor

Maine’s most significant job producingsector over the last 10 years has beenhealth care and for the next 10 years itis projected to have the highest demandsand job growth in our state, accordingto information provided at the MaineHealth Workforce Forum Summit on Oct18 in Orono. The Summit is one of a number ofongoing initiatives of the Maine HealthWorkforce Forum, a statewide groupcreated by the Maine Legislature in2005 of public and private sector healthcare stakeholders. (See sidebar 1)More than 160 Health careprofessionals and employers, stategovernment leaders, policy makers, college and university leaders, andworkforce specialists from around thestate attended the Summit to learn abouthealth care workforce data, trends, issues, strategies and solutions from stateand national experts, and howworkforce planning is essential to ensurea sufficient supply of qualifiedprofessionals to meet health care, long-term care, and public health needs inMaine.“I think it went great,” said GarretOswald, Director, Maine Jobs Council.“There was a packed house with a greatmix of employers, educators from variousinstitutions – both secondary and post-secondary – policy makers, and the four

Commissioners from Labor, EconomicDevelopment, DHHS, and Education.”Oswald said the goals of the Summitwere to present trends and issues withinthe health sector to the audience and toestablish an understanding of the dataand demographics of the healthworkforce, including hearing from policymakers how the State is addressingissues both current and future. (Seesidebar 2)Focus on JobsStats provided at the Summit say currentMaine Department of Labor (MDOL)data shows that:• Projected health sector job growththrough 2018 exceeds all other industrysectors in the state; • The over 60 occupational titles havejob requirements ranging from a highschool diploma/GED with on-the-jobtraining, to professional certificationprograms and advanced degrees, andprofessional credentials, some of whichare among the highest paying jobs in thestate, and provides employment in everycounty;• In addition to direct care and healthprofessional occupations the industryemploys a wide array of technical andsupport staff and computer/healthinformation technologists, jobs thatextend into Maine’s private and public

sectors, working in biotechnology, research, regulatory and administrativejobs, and education and trainingorganizations; • The health care sector wages inMaine are relatively high, and thenumber of jobs in health occupations willincrease by 12% (approximately 7,500jobs) over the 2008–2018 period.Projected retirements and attrition addsto the demand with current projectionsestimating approximately 10,000 ofMaine’s health care workers willpermanently exit the workforce by2018, potentially adding an additional10,000 jobs to the 2018 demandlevels.Layoffs vs. ProjectionsWith so many stats showing growth buthospitals laying off in today’s economy, one has to wonder how they coincide.“Layoffs are in the short-term; projectionsare for the long-term. However it doesn’tnegate the fact that there will be growthin the health sector over the next 10years,” Oswald reminds us. “(The MaineCenter for Workforce Research andInformation) does a good job forecastingbut the one thing they have not beenable to nail down is when layoffs (in theprivate sector) will happen. We can’tsay spcecifically when the needs existbut there will be growth.”

And as the needs of the sector evolve, sotoo must that of the Maine workforce.“We focused a lot of our attention ondirect care workers (when collectingdata) because of immediate need.Various positions in direct care areprojected to have shortages,” saidOswald. “Health informationtechnology, electronic medical records –that facilitate record sharing whereveryou are – have infused the health sector.Training programs are getting up andrunning, and curriculum being created tomeet these needs in the future as well.”The Summit“This was the first (Summit) and it waswell done and well received,” saidOswald. “I think it’s a very productiveway to connect education, training, workforce development, and business tomake sure we meet demands of thesector.”Support for the Summit is provided bythe Maine Health Care Sector Grant, which is funded by the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act throughthe United States Department of LaborEmployment and Training Administrationand the Maine Department of Labor.Additional support for the Summit isprovided by the University of MaineOffice of Academic Affairs, School ofNursing and the College of NaturalScience, Forestry and Agriculture.

ResumeWriting a

Winning

Like everything else in life resumes are subject to fads. A few

short years ago it was strongly suggested that all job seekers limit

their resumes to one page, even if you’ve had extensive education

and some really impressive positions along your career path.

Today most interviewers will agree it is more important in how

the resume flows than how long or short it is.

Different Set of Rules for Resumes

To answer that question we need to firstunderstand that there is a differencebetween resume writing skills and otherwriting skills. There is a completelydifferent set of rules that apply to resumesthan to almost any other type of writing.

You can be a strong writer, with thepower to move people with what you putdown on paper, without having the skillsto write a resume that presents yourself inthe right light. You may ask how this canbe. It has much to do with knowing therules.

1) Avoid the use of full sentences on aresume.

Brevity is the watchword for resumes. Thisis one place where you ignore that ruleabout fragments. Instead of saying, "I ama motivated, results-driven salesprofessional," you'll say, "Motivated,results-driven sales professional."Generally, you always drop the subject.Often, you'll drop the verb as well.

2) Never use personal pronouns in aresume.

The above example also highlightsanother important rule. Never say "I" inyour resume. It's an obstacle. Let theperson reading your resume think in thethird person. He or she will mentally think,"He is a motivated, results-driven salesprofessional." "She is a motivated, results-driven sales professional."

3) Avoid the use of articles such as "a"and "the" for the same reason youavoid full sentences.

This is a rule I occasionally break, yet Ionly do so in the objective section if I do.It requires skill to pull this off sometimeswithout leaving behind a stilted feel to theinformation.

4) Use bulleted lists to present yourinformation.

Bulleted lists organize your informationfor quick scanning. When there are 500resumes competing with yours, make it

easy to spot the fact that you are a goodcandidate for the position.

5) Always use parallel form in any listsyou create.

This is a skill that even experiencedwriters can struggle with. If you alwaysstart descriptions of your skills with a verb, then every bullet for that type ofinformation throughout your resumeshould start with a verb. If you start withan adverb on one line, always useadverbs to start each line.

Parallel Verb Form 1 – For pastpositions

• Developed marketing strategies tobreak through sales barriers within EastCoast sales region

• Trained sales personnel to raise salesperformance of all team members withineach sub-district

• Coordinated marketing events toimprove lead follow up quality

Parallel Verb Form 2 – For presentposition

• Developing marketing strategies tobreak through sales barriers within EastCoast sales region

• Training sales personnel to raise salesperformance of all team members withineach sub-district

• Coordinating marketing events toimprove lead follow up quality

Parallel Adverb Form 1 – For pastpositions

• Actively sought cutting edge marketingstrategies to break through sales barrierswithin East Coast sales region

• Creatively found new ways to raisesales performance of all team memberswithin their sub-districts

• Expressly focused on bettercoordination of marketing events toimprove lead follow up quality

Parallel Adverb Form 2 – For presentpositions

• Actively seeking cutting edge

marketing strategies to break throughsales barriers within East Coast salesregion

• Creatively finding new ways to raisesales performance of all team memberswithin their sub-districts

• Expressly focusing on bettercoordination of marketing events toimprove lead follow up quality

The adverb form is more challenging touse. At the same time, it can be veryeffective at describing the way youapproach your job. Adverbs add punchto the verb. They can help you project apicture of how you work and how youwould benefit a future employer.

Parallel Transitive Verb Form 1 – Forpast positions

Transitive verbs, those verbs that showaction and must be followed bysomething that you acted upon, can alsobe effective.

• Demonstrated proposed marketingstrategies would break through salesbarriers within East Coast sales region

• Motivated sales team to reach highersales goals than ever before consideredwithin each sub-district

• Proved that incorporating socialnetworking into marketing eventsimproved lead quality

Parallel Transitive Verb Form 2 – Forpresent positions

Transitive verbs, those verbs that showaction and must be followed bysomething that you acted upon, can alsobe effective.

• Demonstrating effectiveness of newmarketing strategies by breaking throughprevious sales barriers within East Coastsales region

• Motivating sales team to reach highersales goals than ever before consideredwithin each sub-district

• Proving that incorporating socialnetworking into marketing eventsimproved lead quality

6) Avoid bullet lists that sound like ajob listing.

As you create those bullet lists sharingyour skills, inject a sense of how you haveperformed those primary duties of thejobs you've had in the past. Think beyondwhat you did, to how you accomplishedwhat you did.

7) Focus on what you have to give.

Sure, there are things you need from theemployer. There's time enough fordiscussing that later. Start from theposition of "Here's what I can do for you."Let's face it, while you don't want anemployer who is only what's-in-it-for-mefocused, you can't know who you aredealing with unless you get your foot inthe door for an interview. Focus yourresume on what you have to offer.

In the end, a resume is more than just theability to write. It also involves a level adesign sensitivity. That line, "strong writtenand verbal skills”, has a differentdefinition depending on the employer.

If the job isn't asking you to prove yourdesign skills as well as writing skills, youmay be able to ethically claim you havethe writing skills the company is lookingfor, even if you hire someone to help youwith your resume.

Could you use 15 extradays a year to get yourwork done?

If you always feel harried andharassed to get everything donein your life, think about getting upan hour earlier every day. Bygetting up just one hour earlierevery day for a year, you will add15 entire days to your life to getthings done, according toLeif Hokanson of PersonalBest Consulting.

How Important is itthat we Love our Jobs?

Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) sayswe hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet mostpeople he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it ortolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’snot necessary to be passionate about your job, you should bepassionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’swhat you do for yourself.

Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re livingyour life less well than the individual who is passionate about work.Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Birdoffers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living:

• Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind.• Take a class in a subject that engrosses you.• Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you.• Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon.• Go to your favorite sporting events.• Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them.

The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love todo. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The importantsecond step, Bird says, is to go for it.
