Once you’ve chosen a style

(formal, informal,

you’ll need to make sure you

have dates for all the

positions you’ve held that you

intend to include. A good

rule of thumb to follow is to

list the last ten years of

employment unless you have

had more than five positions

in those ten years. If you

have had five positions in the

last five or six years then list

only those, but be prepared

to answer questions from

your interviewer on why you

have “job hopped” so much.

The interviewer may not use

that term exactly, but that is

what they are thinking, so

have a good answer ready.

(ARA) - Graduation means no more

classes and no more books, but you may

find those items being replaced by bills

and loan statements. In college,

students learn the things that will help

them prosper in their careers, but many

also leave without a clear understanding

of what it means to be financially

responsible.

Whether you're entering the real world

or you are the parent of a child who is

on the verge of graduation, here are a

few things new grads need to

understand about their finances after

leaving college:

Student loans

These days, it's rare for students to

graduate from college without student

loan debt. What's more common are

students who don't entirely know what

they owe, how many loans they've taken

out and the best way to go about paying

off their loans.

If you have government loans,

examining consolidation options may

allow you to lock in at a specific rate,

and make payments to fewer places. If

you, like many graduates, have private

loans to supplement your government

loans, review your repayment options

with your provider.

It's always a good idea to check with

your loan provider to see if you can set

up an automatic repayment option

from your account, since many

providers, such as U.S. Bank, will give

you a lower interest rate if you enroll in

this option.

If you haven't secured steady

employment after college, you might

want to check with your provider about

your loan's repayment grace period. For

example, U.S. Bank student loans allow

borrowers six months before they must

begin repayment. To learn more about

student loan repayment or to find

information about private student loans

if you are planning to continue your

education, visit

www.usbank.com/studentloans.

Insurance

Another thing that tends to sneak up

on recent college grads is the fact that

they are now in charge of paying their

own insurance - most specifically car

and health insurance. Most insurance

companies allow students to be covered

under their parents' policies, but once

graduation passes, it will likely be time

to find your own coverage. Ask your

parents when your coverage on each of

these items expires and plan

accordingly. Also plan for rental or

homeowner insurance expenses -

especially if you don't plan to live at

home with your parents.

Check first with your new or potential

employers, as that's the most common

place to receive health insurance. If you

are unemployed or aren't covered by an

employer's plan, visit

www.healthcare.gov to check out

different options in your state.

You may wish to check with your

parents' auto insurance provider to see

what types of policies they can offer

you. At the same time, it's never a bad

idea to shop around to find the best

coverage at the lowest rates.

Plan for the future

Earning a steady income can be a

welcome change if you were barely

scraping by in college, but it can also

lead you to overspend. It's always a

good idea to keep your credit card use

in check and if you are carrying over

any credit card debt from college, it

should be the first thing you pay off

since credit cards usually carry the

highest interest rates.

Making full use of your employer's

401(k) program and starting an

individual retirement account (IRA) are

also great investments to make early in

your career. Investing with these types

of tools when you're 22 or 23 instead of

waiting a few years to begin investing

can make all the difference in the world

when it comes time for you to retire.

With your diploma in hand, you're

ready to move on to the next chapter in

your life. Start that period off right by

making sure you have your finances in

order so you can enjoy the income you'll

earn at your new job.

Here’s an interesting question:

Two qualified candidates apply for the same

job. They have similar credentials.

One candidate lacks experience with a specific

software package but has a great attitude. The

other candidate knows the software package

well but has a poor attitude.

Which candidate will the company hire?

They will hire the candidate who may not have

100% of the skill set needed, but who has a

great attitude and gets along well with

everyone. The company’s reasoning may be:

“We can send a person to school to learn

technical skills, but it is difficult to send

someone to school to change a bad attitude. It

could take years and cost thousands of dollars.”

That is a major reason why attitude is so

important, especially when conducting a job

search.

I remember interviewing a candidate who I

would have hired except that he spent the first

ten minutes of the interview criticizing his

former boss and complaining about how

unfairly he was treated. It was clear to me that

he felt angry at being laid off, but that is not

something that should be discussed during an

interview.

Many sayings have merit. Think positively.

Attitude is everything. Your attitude is showing.

Unfortunately, many dismiss these clichés as

being nonsense. Most people can spot

negativity instantly. So much has been said

about maintaining a positive attitude that the

words often fall on deaf ears.

When looking for a job, a positive attitude is

key. It can be the difference between landing a

job and getting repeatedly rejected. Here are

some reasons why building and maintaining a

positive attitude is so important:

• It keeps you motivated when your job search

is not going well.

• A negative attitude distorts your point of view

and affects other parts of your life.

• A negative attitude blocks avenues that might

otherwise prove to be fruitful. In other words, if

a position is not a perfect fit, a negative attitude

will prevent you from exploring it further.

• Negativity is apparent in interviews even

when you are not aware that it is a factor. As

stated earlier, most people can spot a negative

attitude immediately, and this can hurt you

during an interview.

• Negative attitudes can slowly destroy feelings

of confidence and your belief in yourself. Again,

these are factors that can limit your chances of

finding a job.

Now that we have gotten the negativity out of

the way, what are some things you can do as a

job seeker to keep your attitude positive?

• Become more aware of how others perceive

you. Do you sound angry or defensive? Is

resentment creeping into your voice?

Awareness is the first step in reversing a trend.

• Ask friends and family for an objective

opinion of your current attitude. It is difficult to

make this assessment alone.

• Establish a weekly plan and follow it

consistently and conscientiously. The strong

sense of accomplishment will create positive

feelings and a higher level of confidence.

• Join a job seeker support or networking

group. These groups can provide a forum to

vent and share feeling with others in similar

circumstances. It’s also an excellent way to

• Make a list of your accomplishments. Focus

on what’s positive in life instead of on what is

negative. A list of accomplishments is also a big

help when you begin to write or re-vamp your

resume.

• Be aware of the steps involved in a

grateful for. In times of loss, it is important to

stop and notice the ways we are being

supported. We can keep a gratitude journal,

or create a gratitude listserv, or just quietly

reflect on the daily little surprises that help us

along the way.

8. Listen to the concerns of your family

members, and keep an open dialogue with

them as well as your children. Your family

members may be worried about you, or about

their future and plans. With your empathic

listening, you can acknowledge and respect

their ways of adapting to major life changes.

Children especially need to feel that they are

not to blame for new challenges in the family,

and that they can help in some way—feel

useful. They can add to the activities that keep

life feeling normal. Children, as well as adults

like to feel helpful, vital and appreciated,

especially in times of loss.

9. Focus on the things you can control. Do

activities that restore your sense of

productivity and purpose, even if just small

tasks, one step at a time. Make phone calls,

clean out your files, organize your contact lists.

In short, do tangible things that make a

noticeable difference.

10. Join up with networking groups, job

clubs, support groups or other groups where

you can share your experiences with fellow job

seekers. Connecting with people going

through the same challenges usually gives us a

sense of acceptance, belonging, inspiration,

and hope.

Helping Ourselves through the

Grief of Job Loss By Val Walker

Our jobs are much more than the ways we

make a living. They reflect how we see

ourselves, and how others see us. They assure

us that we are good providers for our families

and ourselves. They are the places where we

interact with people every day. They provide

us with a sense of purpose and structure. So

when we lose our job, we are grieving more

than a great loss of income and financial

stability. We are grieving a whole way of life.

The emotional turbulence of losing a job is as

real as any kind of grief, not only causing us

distress, but sometimes affecting our family

members and friends. These emotions persist,

though we may hide them in order to survive

and move ahead with our job search and daily

responsibilities.

Common grief reactions to job loss include:

• Shock and numbness. It might take days or

weeks for the experience to be fully realized.

• Insomnia—staying up at night or waking up

at night worried about our finances, or our

future

• Strong emotions of grief including anger,

frustration, sadness, emptiness, fear, anxiety,

confusion, loss of self-confidence or self-

esteem, guilt

• Feeling tired and drained

• Lack of concentration, mental fatigue,

distractibility. Grief often has a strong effect

on our mental functions and cognitive

abilities. Mental exhaustion is one of the least

understood aspects of grieving that job seekers

might respect and consider. We need to be

patient with ourselves in processing so much

new information as we adapt to our life

changes and try to get our job search

underway.

When I have facilitated support groups for

people who lost jobs in past years, I have heard

practical advice as well as witnessed

remarkable compassion from participants

about how they coped with their grief. Their

key message for anyone who has ever lost a job

is this: Be compassionate with yourself when

you are going through a hard time. Though

we need to be smart and strategic with our job

search, we can still be kind, patient and honest

with our grief too. We can step out into the

world of employers with our resumes and

applications wearing a brave smile for part of

the day, and still be taking care of our

emotions at another part of the day. Our self-

care needs our attention and time.

Here are ten suggestions for helping

ourselves through the grief of losing a job:

1. Allow time to grieve and acknowledge

your feelings of grief.

2. Remind yourself that we all grieve in our

own different ways. Some people devastated

by a loss want to get out and socialize, while

others can hardly get out of bed in the

morning. Some grievers prefer the

unconditional love of their dog or their cat,

and others prefer spiritual guidance from their

pastor. Some want a heart-to-heart talk with

a dear friend, and others just want to play

basketball with their buddies. There is no

perfect way to grieve, whether shared or

unshared, as it is often a messy, unpredictable

and confusing journey for most of us.

3. Keep routines that make life feel normal.

During times of great change, even the

simplest routines give us comfort and

grounding. Hands-on tasks such as cooking,

cleaning, folding laundry, gardening, walking

our dog, all help to hold our lives together.

Other routines could be watching a favorite

TV show, going to a regular meet-up, or a

Saturday pizza before a movie matinee.

Routines are especially helpful for children

during family transitions after a job loss.

4. Reach out to a good listener who is

compassionate, nonjudgmental, and patient.

Hopefully there is at least one person we

know who can allow us the time to grieve,

vent, or problem-solve and brainstorm. A

good listener can validate our journey as we

express strong emotions about our job loss, or

help us think and plan our strategies for our

job search. We may need to seek professional

counseling if we feel especially troubled and

overwhelmed.

5. Share your interests or talents with others

in your community through volunteering.

Many people who lost jobs were amazed at

how their self-esteem was boosted by

volunteering at a local organization such as a

food bank or a hospital. “The best therapy

after I lost my job was feeling needed by

others,” says Ron, a volunteer serving at an

animal shelter. Not only did this volunteer

enjoy his time caring for animals, he

eventually followed up on a job lead from their

staff, and landed a job at a kennel months

later.

6. Journal about your feelings or your ideas.

Many people think more clearly by writing

down their experiences. Often we find inner

guidance when we read our own accounts of

what we have felt and believed during difficult

ordeals.

7. Recognize and appreciate what you are
