EMPLOYEES RISING TO THE CHALLENGE I want to personally thank and commend John Robbins, Matt Caronna, Joe Sardina, Dave Burns and Joe Villani for taking time away from their current assignments and helping our company in finishing a couple of school projects that were struggling to get the schools to open by the time classes were to start. Not only did these employees answer the call to help out these projects in distress but they did it without complaining and by working the overtime necessary to keep both their current assignments on track and the projects they were assigned to help. Their dedication, commitment and hard work is an example for all of us at Soltek to follow- They answered the call to help out Soltek when we were in trouble and they put their projects on the back burner…. By the way they DELIVERED.

CEO CONNECTION

THAT NEW SCHOOL FEELIt was a special Back to School Night for the students, teachers, and parents of Grant Elementary School this year. Grant received an extensive whole site modernization by Soltek which was celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 7th and followed by Back to School Night. Soltek constructed a new two-story, eight classroom building with student restrooms, food services area and teacher’s support facilities along with shade shelters and one new elevator tower. The project involved HVAC and fire alarm upgrades in an existing two-story permanent building and HVAC upgrades in two existing portable classrooms. Intercom upgrades in three existing permanent buildings and in multiple existing portable classrooms. Soltek demolished and removed six portable classrooms and relocated five relocatable classrooms and associated ramps to another location on the campus.

Soltek Succeeds in Summer Slammer Projects

Soltek completed two challenging “summer slammer” projects this summer that wouldn’t have been pulled off without the dedication and hard work of their project teams.

Working double shifts and Saturdays, Bob Marsteller and Greg Tague managed to pull off a small miracle in completing a major milestone on the Central School Project in Escondido this summer. Faced with limited space and a major amount of work, Bob and Greg worked tirelessly to remove and replace several hundred feet of raised concrete walkway, stairs, concrete ramps, aluminum ramps as well as remove and replace the covered walkway at the same time. In addition to the ADA upgrades, the summer push work included the removal and replacement of the asphalt playgrounds and fire lanes, Administrative offices and restroom and almost a million dollars’ worth of electrical upgrades including all new SDG&E transformers (and to those of you who have not worked with SDG&E, getting them to do anything on time is a miracle)! To tell you how truly terrifying this work was to accomplish in just 8 weeks, the Escondido Unified School District had bid this work last year as a standalone project but did not receive one bid for the work. Not one Contractor thought they could accomplish the work in the allotted timeframe. Well they did not have Soltek’s management team and Soltek’s Subcontractors. Working with CACY Electric, Infinity Structures, San Diego Steel Solutions, Advance Plumbing and other great subcontractors, the team at the Central School Project got it done to the delight of the School and the School Board. Thanks also to Brandon Richie for helping push the Subcontractors with words of wisdom and gentle persuasion! Thank you as well to Elizabeth Noriega for all of your hard work on this project. -Job 1032

The second summer slammer project pulled off by a hard-working Soltek team was the the Jepson Middle School Modernization project in Vacaville. The project was an extensive remodel project that consisted of the remodel of 19 buildings which included low voltage upgrades, finish upgrades and converting classrooms into science rooms. Additionally, the project removed and replaced almost all of the sidewalks and courtyards in a two-and-a-half-month period and a new kitchen was also installed. Soltek performed $4.5 billion worth of work in two and half months on a very congested existing school campus. The dedication and strong teamwork of the Soltek team, which included Steven Aulabaugh (Superintendent), Ty Brewer (Project Manager), Frank Copeland (Project Engineer), Treg Duerksen (Project Manager), and Ron Hicks (Managing Corporate Officer), enabled the summer slammer to be successful. Job well done to the 1031 team!

READY TO WRAP THIS ONE UP

THINGS ARE MOVING

NOW THAT’S AN OFFICE WITH A VIEW

The P-915 SOF Mobile Communications Detachment Center at the Silver Strand Training Complex is nearing completion and despite a design delay, the 988 team has been working closely with the Navy to deliver the facility. The 20, 938 sq. ft., one-story building includes offices, training rooms, shower/locker rooms, gear storage, high-bay warehouse space, and an outdoor service yard and outdoor training space.

The Horace Mann Middle School project is underway. This photo shows the building demolished and the beginning of over-excavation of the building pad and working to restore the parking lot which was completed prior to school starting back up.

Soltek is drilling at sunrise at the P-327 F-35C Operational Training Facility project at Naval Air Station Lemoore as our team works hard to construct an operational facility to house Full Mission Simulators and renovate areas to support the Joint Strike Fighter F-35C variant.

Monroe Clark Middle School Recognition

LOOKING TO MEET OR BEAT BID DAY ESTIMATES

The Monroe Clark Middle School project team, Job 1020, received a special thanks from Tom Hart, the Project Manager at San Diego Unified School District for their hard work which enabled the project to be completed over the summer. Tom mentioned Terry Walbon, Project Manager; Jim Viera, Superintendent; Felicia Hererra, Project Engineer, and Ricardo Castillo, Assistant Superintendent. Tom thanked all team members for a “smooth transition from a very busy August period of construction activity to the opening of Clark MS, Monday August 28, 2017.” Tom said the “grounds and buildings were immaculate,” and “everyone’s efforts were special, needed, and contributed to the success that was achieved.” Job well done to the 1020 team!

The P-800 Steam Distribution System Decentralization is nearing completion and is currently ahead of schedule, looking to meet or exceed bid day estimates. The P-800 Steam project is decentralizing the existing steam distribution system that provides steam for the Naval Base San Diego wet side base. The project is in the last month of contract, however a modification may extend the contract until next summer. According to Design Manager and Project Manager John Thur, “the entire team has done a masterful job on a very complex project with an extreme amount of coordination, notifications, planning, and procurement. Job well done to the 989 P-800 team!

Another Year at SDUSD Construction ExpoSoltek participated as an Exhibitor at San Diego Unified School District’s 7th Annual Construction Expo in July. The Construction Expo is a small business outreach event that provides a platform to connect large general contractors with small business contractors to perform on SDUSD’s projects. Ana Aispuro and Jessica Chapin attended the event for Soltek and as a part of our large contractor duties, Soltek provided lunches for the attendees. Soltek’s efforts helped SDUSD and Soltek to meet EBE goals for projects with the District.

What was your first Soltek Project? Riverside II, CA State Prison, Blyth CA • 1992

What was your favorite Soltek Project? Why? Long Beach Community Collage LARC Library. The project had a bit of everything as well as a few challenging Architectural and Structural components

How did you get into the construction field? Education? Started working as a Concrete Carpenter/ Finisher straight out of the Army in 86. It was the trade of my Father and his Brother who both trained me. From there I realized it is not a trade that I could do forever so I listened and watched many trades and learned as much as I could from as many people I could. The day you stop learning is the day you stop growing.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Taking my boat to the Colorado River and spending time with my Family and friends.

What is your favorite meal? Ribeye Steak with sautéed mushrooms

What would you like to be famous for? Famous? I don’t think that will happen but I would like to be remembered for my accomplishments, projects, and being a great father and husband that raised 3 wonderful successful children. Kind of sounds like a eulogy.

Bloody Good Work Soltek

WELCOME ABOARD!

Soltek’s blood drive for the San Diego Blood Bank through the AGC on July 12th was a huge success this year. Soltek’s blood drive took place in the 2424 Congress Street parking lot via a Blood Mobile and those who donated received a special lunch after donating and also had the opportunity to participate in the Pint for Pint program and receive a free beer voucher for Ballast Point Brewery. Together Soltek employees donated 36 units of blood which can touch the lives of at least 108 people. The blood was donated to local hospitals and has likely already helped those in need. Way to go Soltek! #agcsdblood #bloodhero

In the last Newsletter, we identified returning employee Ray Hamelin as being a part of the 993 Grant K-8 Whole Site Modernization project team, however Ray Hamelin is on the 1038 Stone Ranch Elementary School Expansion Classroom Building Construction team. Also, we misspelled Nick Whitehead’s name. Nick is a returning Soltek employee who is working as a General Foreman for the 943 IDIQ jobs.

We apologize for our mistakes and look forward to bringing you the latest Soltek news each newsletter.
