Here is the cycle of building materials pictured. When you are planning to demolish a building, there are three options/(alternatives) how to process the various components of the building. The first option is to crush the components by shredding or similar processes. By choosing this option, the materials can be stored in a landfill and parts of it can be combust. The second opportunity is, to recycle the used materials. Recycling means to prepare waste materials in order to use them again. This can be either the preparation for the original purpose or for another usage. To re-use some components is the third way to process the used materials. Re-use means to use different construction parts of buildings in their original form once again. As you can see, recycling and re-use of building materials are in the cycle, in contrast to the landfill and combustion. Thats why recycling and re-use are environmental-friendlier than combustion, especially because you are saving natural resources.
*In addition to conserving the natural resources, some further advantages are the waste prevention, the energy saving and the reduction of CO2-emissions.
Abfallvermeidung Schonung der Naturressourcen Energieeinsparung CO2-Verringerung
*before starting demolition, it has to be secured how to get best results of an unmixed demolition wasteThe reusable components have to be dismantled first. According to this, you can start with the recycling-oriented deconstruction. That means, you dont destroy the building all at once, but layer by layer for separating various materials.*When you look at what we talked to you, its a good question to ask, why not all materials go through the re-use or recycle-processes I told you about:One problem is, that the materials properties getting worse through the recycling process. This procedure is calling downcycling, what means that the quality of recycled material is worse than new material.Especially glass and plastics loosing their material properties significantly. In contrast to this, metals are more suitable to recycle.Another problem are the irreversible material-composites. For recycling it is necessary to separate the several materials of a construction part. This problem is gaining in importance especially in the energy-efficient constructions.
*Here you can see some examples of materials you can re-use: You can re-use steel girders, because steel is really long-lastingRoofing tiles are also good to re-use.Different metal parts, like pipelines but also massive wooden beams and parquet floors are suitable materials to re-use as well as different sanitary facilities like a tap.Undamaged windows and doors are also qualified to re-use.But still remind. Re-use depends always on the age and condition of the building and its compositions.
*Used components can be received in component exchanges online (like the german website bauteilnetz.de), on classified advertisements for example in newspapers or by asking a scap metal dealer When you have to demolish a building, you have to consider that also a free disposal of used components can be useful to reduce the demolition costs.
*When you want to build a new building, materials have to be chosen faithfully which parts have to be new and which other parts can be build with re-used or recycled parts.Recycling-materials could be used especially in the infrastructural measures.Thats why a greater sense of responsibility of the contracting authority is necessary to reach a higher recycling rate! (Bund, Lnder, Kommunen federal states and local governments)
**- EU-regulations- also called as the Waste Framework Directive- came into effect in 2008 sets the basic concepts and definitions related to waste management, such as definitions of waste, recycling, recovery it explains when waste ceases to be waste and becomes a secondary raw material Directive lays down some basic waste management principles and thats the intention of that Directive
it requires that waste be managed without endangering human health and harming the environment, and in particular without risk to water, air, soil, plants or animals and without adversely affecting the countryside or places of special interest.
One of the most important goal (recycling and recovery targets) concerning the Recycling of construction and demolished waste is the 70% minimum recycling rates.. to be achieved by 2020: 70% preparing for re-use, recycling and other recovery of construction and demolition waste *EU-regulations
Waste legislation and policy of the EU Member States shall apply as a priority order the following waste management hierarchy, written in the EU-Directive: 1. Prevention before 2. Preparing for Re-use 3. before Recovery (f.e.energy recovery) before Disposal (like thermal treatment or mechanical-biological treatment for further utilization or disposal), so the most important goal to achieve is the prevention and as the last opportunity
- Deviations from this hierarchy are possible with regard to environmental issues and on the basis of assessments of the entire life cycle of products (so ecological, economical and social issues)*- National laws & regulations
Basically you can currently say that there are at the moment a plenty of laws in process so Ive selected the most important German law, the Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz (like Recycling management law) besides the important law each state has their own specific rules and regulations (and we do have 16)
the Recycling management law is based on the EU Directive 2008 resource efficiency: of such high quality as possible**What about the future? *5) What about the future?
