1What does it mean to have an emotional behavioral disability? IDEA defines emotional disturbance as follows:a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a childs educational performance:(A) An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors.(B) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers.(C) Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances.(D) A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.(E) A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. (2)As defined by IDEA, emotional disturbance includes schizophrenia but does not apply to children who are socially maladjusted, unless it is determined that they have an emotional disturbance. Umbrella term means that there are a number of disorders that fall under the term emotional behavior disorder -Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric disorder and most treatable. Anxiety disorders are also an umbrella term and include gernalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder and specific phobias. Howie Mandel is a well know television star and has a severe case of OCD. You will see a video later about this.Conduct disorders is a group of motional and behavioral problems in students signs might include but are not limited to aggression, destruction, lying, cheating, stealing, not following rules and high rates of absencesMood disorder-A specific mood disorder is bipolar disorder. This disorder causes people to be manic-depressive, it causes dramatic mood swings between helplessness, normal mood, and a feeling of being invincible Psychotic disorders is another umbrella term that encompasses disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. People with psychotic disorders might experience delusions, hallucinations or both. Delusions are beliefs that someone is out to get you or there is a conspiracy against you. Hallucinations is when you falsely believe that you are hearing, seeing, or feeling something that is not there.Eating Disorders are extremes in a regular eating behavior whether that be eating too much or too little. There is also a feeling of being inadequate or not extreme concern about body weight. This is much more common in females than in males. Anorexia and bulimia are two common eating disorders.
