A New Folk Art MuseumCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The project objective is to create a new home

for the American Folk Art Museum, previously

located in midtown Manhattan. The new

facility will occupy the old Tobacco Warehouse

in DUMBO, which is part of the Fulton Ferry

Historic District and has been a ruin for many

years.

Folk Artists do not participate in the self-conscious tradition of art-making, and many of the

pieces were created in private, intimate settings, never meant to be seen by anyone outside of the

household. By placing these objects in the context of a museum, we are changing the relationship

between the creators and viewers.

By creating an interior space that reflects the original context of the artists’ works, both public and

private, visitors are reminded to consider what it means to be looking at these objects.

Linear cutout windows lead visitors through the rooms of the museum, and create strategic vantage

points for viewing works of art and other visitors.

The Pratt Institute Library ReimaginedCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The Pratt Library Reimagined was a

group project. Other members include:

Hsin Ying Chan, Andria Ihnatowycz,

Regina Macaraeg, and Vicky Mo. The purpose of this project is to reimagine the

existing Pratt Library and develop ways in which

current library conditions and the overall user

experience can be improved to better serve

the Pratt community and correspond with the

evolving uses of libraries today.

The concept is to create a community “core” in

the library through people-centered activities

and programming, while utilizing technology to

provide an enhanced user experience.

These programs and activities revolve around

the stairs, which serve as the main mode of

vertical circulation, further emphasizing the idea

of a central hub that fosters a culture of sharing

and collaboration among the Pratt community.

“The library is the only centralized location where new and

emerging information technologies can be combined with

traditional knowledge resources in a user-focused, service-rich

environment that supports today’s social and educational

patterns of learning, teaching, and research. Whereas the Internet

has tended to isolate people, the library, as a physical place, has

done just the opposite.”

-Geoffrey T. Freeman, AIA

Page 12: Emlyn Hilson - Interior Design Portfolio

10

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTA major problem at Pratt is the lack of a

central social space. The Indoor Park invites

users to relax, socialize, or work short term

in a casual environment. With a range of

seating options and gathering spaces, the

Indoor Park can accommodate a variety

of user types and activities and serves as a

central social zone.

Page 13: Emlyn Hilson - Interior Design Portfolio

11

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

To develop a stronger emphasis on art and

design, we intend to celebrate student work

through the placement of exhibition spaces

in highly visible areas of the library, particularly

in the “community core” around the stairs and

throughout the Indoor Park on the main level.

The improved visibility and showcasing of

student work brings value to their creative

endeavors while also engaging, energizing, and

inspiring all members of the Pratt community.

Page 14: Emlyn Hilson - Interior Design Portfolio

12

NEW TECHNOLOGYTo meet the needs of an increasingly

technology literate student body,

we conceptualized an advanced

operating system designed to enhance

user experience. The operating system

is used throughout the Library, and

is accessible both in and out of the

building on personal devices. The user

therefore has a more efficient and

resourceful experience with the library,

with support pre-visit, during visit, and

post-visit to the library. Users encounter the operating

system upon entry to the library,

where they may specify what

they are looking for and recieve a

personalized guide for their visit.

The operating system is also active in “work pods” throughout

the reading sectiions of the library. Users can access their

personal accounts on the system to view their saved media

and resources. Users may also share information with others

in different pods.

A globe, a car, a radio, a bag of coffee, a tent,

a snow globe, and a letter. Seven seemingly

random objects become a meaningful, nostalgia-

filled experience within this traveling exhibition.

Hit the Road Jack takes us back in time, recalling

family vacations and youthful adventures,

favorite songs, first cars. These trips are a kind of

national memory; their rich history has become

an important theme in American popular culture

and literature. A road trip is not merely a journey

in a car, but a national tradition.

The exhibition is divided in three zones:

Planning, On the Road, and Destination,

so visitors will feel they are on the path of a

classic American road trip.

Hit the Road was a group project.

Other members include: Danielle Covatta.

ACROSS THE CONTINENT

Written by Samuel Bowles in 1865, Across the Continent is arguably the first American road trip book. There have been countless road trips in literature since then.

INTERSTATE HIGHWAY

SYSTEMThe greatest change to the American road trip was the start, and subsequent expansion, of the Interstate Highway System. The higher speeds and controlled access nature of the Interstate allowed for greater distances to be traveled in less time and with improved safety as highways became divided.

MUSICWhether you’re driving across the country or just down the road, it’s always a brilliant plan to have some carefully selected tunes to make the trip go down smoothly.

From family sing-a-longs to top 40 hits, music has always been a popular form of entertainment on road trips.

GAMESOn long trips, car games are a great way to pass the time. From travel bingo to the liscence plate game, car games have been popular since the mid-20th century.

Today many carsalso have entertainment systems, allowing passengers to watch TV or play video games to pass the time.

Exhibition: Beyond the PondCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Beyond the Pond was a group project.

Other members include: Joseph Bova

and Sierra Holland.

Beyond the Pond is a children’s exhibit

based on the children’s book, Beyond the

Pond, by Joseph Kuefler

Each child thrives and learns in different ways. Beyond the Pond has activities for children of all dispositions and learning styles. Children can jump on lily pads to create music, work together to raise a sail, make digital watercolors and finger paintings, and make spooky shadows in artist Philip Worthington’s traveling art installation Shadow Monsters.

Play, learn, explore, and dive headfirst into an exciting journey!

Travel through the depths, the sunken shipwrecks, the forests

and caves, and see that even places you see every day can be

extraordinary.

Beyond the Pond takes you on an unforgettable journey

through another world, all in your own backyard.

DIFFA: Dining by DesignTRANSCENDING DARKNESS

DIFFA was a group project.

Other members include: Raleene Cabrera,

Regina Macaraeg, and Ana Vasquez.

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” - Desmond Tutu

“We all hope. It’s what keeps us alive.” - David Mamet

DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting

AIDS) raises awareness and grants funds to

organizations that provide treatment, direct

care services, preventive education programs

and advocacy for individuals impacted by HIV/

AIDS.

While HIV/AIDS remains a serious issue, we

saw hope in the efforts of organizations like

DIFFA who are working to fight the epidemic.

The intent of our design was to evoke an uplifting

experience through the use of a light sculpture

as a focal point for viewing and reflection. The

light sculpture is comprised of hanging triangles,

referencing the Silence = Death symbol. The

number of triangles represents the 36.9 million

individuals who are living with HIV/AIDS.

STUDY MODEL

Page 27: Emlyn Hilson - Interior Design Portfolio

25

COMPLETED INSTALLATION

As you move from the bottom to the top, the triangles go from dense to sparse, eventually disappearing. This

representa the hope that the number of those affected by HIV/AIDS will continue to decrease.

Alone Together: A Pillow Concept

Over 8 million people inhabit New York City’s 305 square

miles, which makes it the most densely populated city in the

U.S. We share spaces to save room, but that doesn’t mean we

have to sacrifice personal space.

The Alone Together pillow is a multi-use object for people

living in close quarters to share while maintaining their

personal boundaries and privacy.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

The pillow can be used several ways in one of New York city’s micro

apartments: it can be a floor pillow, or it can take the place of a

traditional sofa. The pillow is modular, so multiples of it can be used

for larger seating areas.

A Residential ApartmentCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The clients are a family of three: two parents

and their four year old daughter.

The apartment is located on the 2nd floor of

173 Perry Street, in the West Village, and its large

windows pose a unique privacy problem. The

West and South faces of the building are visible

to pedestrians walking below and residents

in adjacent buildings. The question becomes:

how does one create privacy without

compromising the spectacular views?

DININGCONCEPT DIAGRAM

The solution is movable screens with

customizable privacy through layering.

A single layer filters light but does not obscure

views. With each new layer added, more

privacy and darkness is possible.

The screens may be pushed away entirely for

total visibility, or all layered at once for total

privacy

A Live/Work LoftCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The client for this project is a fashion

photographer in her early 30s. She lives alone,

travels often, and is rarely home. She does not

cook or entertain, but has a large collection of

clothing and accessories. She wants her home

to feel like a sanctuary from her busy life.

The project’s inspiration comes from Issey

Miyake’s A Piece of Cloth (A.P.O.C.) collection.

The garment comes as a single piece of

material, from which the clothing is cut out.

Because of the patented non-fraying fabric,

the garment can be cut any which way,

allowing for a level of complete customization.

Freestanding furniture units act as space

dividers. Desks, beds, wardrobes, and

bookshelves are cut out of the units,

taking the place of conventional walls

and furniture.

An Annex for the Noguchi MuseumCONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

PUBLIC PRIVATE

Isamu Noguchi designed the Prismatic Table

for the Aluminum Company of America

(Alcoa) in 1957. It was the last piece of furniture

he designed in a long career of art and design.

Tasked with designing a hypothetical annex for

the Noguchi Museum (currently in Queens,

NY), I took formal inspiration from this small

table.

A pattern of holes in sheet aluminum form

the majority of partitions in the space. Where

the program requires privacy, the partitions

are solid. Where the program is public, such

as exhibition space, the partitions are barely

screens.

A Room for Ironing

ELEVATION 1

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

What would make the perfect room for

ironing, and only ironing?

Wrinkled walls!

The wrinkled walls are firm, but have a

soft padded surface, so not only do they

inspire ironing, but they can actually be

used as a surface on which to iron. There

are two more traditional ironing “tables”

on either side of the room as well.
