Message from the Council

Dear Elms Community,

“O God of all beginnings and endings, we thank you for this school year.”

As we embark on the beginning of a new school year this fall, we reflect on the ending of our year before and look forward to what lies ahead. With the close of the 2010-2011 school year, the Elms graduated 42 seniors into the world, 100% of whom were accepted to college this fall.

This past spring the Elms Board of Trustees saw an end to their previous strategic plan and completed a new three-year plan complete with a revised mission statement and a new vision statement for our school. Our new mission statement - Our Lady of the Elms, an independent, Catholic school rooted in the Dominican tradition, educates girls and young women to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly, and serve compassionately - guides the daily work of our administration, faculty, staff and students. As we look to the future, we remain focused on the mission of educating our young students to be the future women leaders in our community.

The annual report, found in the pages of this magazine, indicates a renewed sense of support in sustaining an all-girls education in Akron, Ohio. Our donors who gave this past year have increased by 107% from the previous fiscal year. Alumnae giving increased this past year, as well. The Circle of Angels, which launched at February Fantasy 2011, has a large number of members assisting our students through these difficult financial times.

As we wish our recent graduates the best, we look forward to our school’s future guided by the new strategic plan. We are ready to begin the next step in our journey, 88 years in the making.

Sincerely,

Chief Administrators

Dear Families and Friends of Our Lady of the Elms School,

As the new Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Our Lady of the Elms School, I am privileged to introduce to you the blueprint that will lead the school into the future, our new Strategic Plan. The plan was developed through a months-long process of thoughtful analysis, purposeful attention, and concerted efforts of a group of volunteers and board members. The mission of our school is at the forefront of the plan.

Our Lady of the Elms, an independent, Catholic school rooted in the Dominican tradition, educates girls and young women to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly and serve compassionately.

The plan, which is comprised of five goals, will reinforce our direction as the school so highly regarded in the region and ranked 12th academically in the state of Ohio!

Goal 1: To increase non-tuition revenue through a variety of advancement efforts and non-traditional revenue streams

Goal 2: To increase the enrollment of qualified students to the optimal levelGoal 3: To develop a comprehensive leadership succession plan for key staff positions and the board.Goal 4: To become THE leadership center for women in Northeast OhioGoal 5: To develop a long-term facility plan that includes the negotiation of a long-term lease of the

land from the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

Of course, in this age of economic downturn, many schools are finding enrollment management a challenge, hence Goals 1 and 2. Yet, as a community invested in the education of the girls at the Elms, we realize the value of the education students receive during their tenures here. Our girls develop into strong young women with confidence, courage, compassion, and conviction. They leave our halls to enter those of prestigious institutions of higher education, in the state, on the East coast, and in the West. They receive millions of dollars in scholarships that recognize their achievement as Elms academic, athletic, and social champions. Our girls reach out to many who are in need in our community. They serve in nursing homes, soup kitchens, and child care agencies. They excel on the athletic fields and courts. But most of all, Elms girls become the cornerstones of their communities as socially responsible women leaders. We know the value of word of mouth as a marketing strategy. Nothing is more effective. We call on you to spread the good news of Our Lady of the Elms!

As the Board of Trustees follows this new Strategic Plan, please be assured that we will maintain the high standards of leadership that have become an Elms trademark. We will keep the children at the center of our purpose for being. Their well-being is always first! Please know that we deeply appreciate the trust you have placed in our school; and, we thank you for your continued commitment to the mission of the school.

Warm regards and many blessings!

Lisa Shoman ‘67 RetiresBy Marie Reichart ‘99After 32 years of service and dedication to Our Lady of the Elms, Mrs. Lisa Shoman has retired.  Mrs. Shoman has guided and instructed over 400 students in her tenure as an educator at the Elms.  All students who have experienced her unique teaching style consider themselves better for having had her as their teacher.  Mrs. Shoman asked her students to plan ahead, follow through in their goals and strive for excellence and creativity in all they do.  Her quiet, calm demeanor impressed upon her students the importance of maturity and respect in their interactions with one another.  As a mentor, a teacher and a friend, Mrs. Shoman touched the lives of all she has encountered.  Most notably, any individual who has taught with Mrs. Shoman considers themselves fortunate for the mentorship and friendship she offered.   As an Elms graduate and former teacher, she will always be an Elms girl!  Mrs. Shoman, best of luck and well wishes on your future journey with your family and beautiful grandson.

Name: Susie Beringer Dix ‘90City: Akron

Elms Graduate: 1990

Occupation: Former Teacher; currently a stay-at-home mom

Children: Phoebe 7, Paige 5, Gordy 4

Length of Family Association with the Elms: 40 years... My parents were Elms parents for 20 straight years as seven of my sisters and I went through high school!

Length of Volunteer Service with the Elms: 1 year

Volunteer Areas: Room parent, Spirit Shop, Magazine Sale, classroom help, book fair

Why did you want to be a volunteer with the Elms/what were your expectations:

I wanted to be a volunteer because I love the Elms and I want to do what I can to help it flourish.  Having formerly taught in Catholic schools, and having spent 16 years in them,  I know that it really takes a strong cadre of volunteers to stretch the operating dollars and make things happen.  Additionally, the Elms gave so much to me when I was a student and now I feel like it’s my turn to give back.  I can remember all the parents who volunteered when I was a student (my parents were the chairs of the very first February Fantasy), and now I feel like it’s time for my generation to take up volunteering at school the way our parents did.

What about being a volunteer with the Elms do you find satisfying:

I love seeing my children randomly throughout the school day and watching how they interact with their classmates. I’ve also found volunteering to be a great way to get to know other parents and the

Volunteer Spotlight

faculty and staff.  Additionally, I’ve liked volunteering in the Spirit Shop because it’s fun to watch the high school girls and see that nothing has changed in 20 years!

What do you do when you are not a volunteer with the Elms:

I have three young children that keep me busy! When I have free time (ha!), I enjoy playing tennis, skiing, playing golf, traveling, politics and current events, and reading.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with the Elms:

I would say that you are only going to get out of a school what you put into it.  It’s not enough to just write the tuition check - you have to be involved.  Your involvement not only helps the school meet its operating needs, but it also allows your child to see that her school is important to you; and, I’ve been amazed at the way my daughters beam when they see that I am volunteering at school.  Additionally, I think when you volunteer you have a better pulse on what’s going on at school as you get to know the teachers, students, and staff better.  Further, I think people should know that there is a job to fit everyone’s schedule; if you are working full-time and are unavailable during the day, there are plenty of jobs that can be done while sitting at your kitchen table at night.

The Elms Welcomes two students from Rwanda, AfricaAfter one year of preparation, the Elms welcomes Hyacinthe Mutuyubutatu and Jeanne D’Arc Irizera from Rwanda, Africa. Thanks to the generous and compassionate hearts of Mary Lynn and Michael Silvestro who are fostering the girls, Hyacinthe and Jeanne D’Arc were able to start this school year as Elms girls. This opportunity was possible through The Orphan’s Prayer, a non-profit with a mission to supply humanitarian aid to orphanages. Hyacinthe and Jeanne D’Arc are adjusting to their schedule of classes and are working hard to improve their English with the help of tutors. Jeanne D’Arc assists our Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Giel, with elementary students two days a week. We are happy to have the girls in our school community.

that “Sister” gave them for modesty during Late Nite Catechism.

Late Nite CatechismRULES1) Don’t be late.2) Don’t chew gum.3) Don’t wear revealing clothing.4) Answer questions in complete sentences starting with “Sister.”

We learned these rules rather quickly at the fun and hilarious one-woman show that encouraged audience participation.

Not Catholic? Not a problem. Everyone was able to find humor in the show. In fact, some of the best moments occurred when non-Catholics were discovered in the audience - like Lukas the Lutheran boy.

Of course, some of the rules above were broken and members of the “class” got a lot of attention from “Sister!”• Two young ladies who wore a low-cut blouse were given

tissues to cover the exposed areas and told “Honey, even Mary Magdalene wouldn’t have chosen to wear that outfit!” And the boys were told to “look at the flag.”

• A cute couple who sat too close together was told to “Leave room for the Holy Spirit!”

• Another young lady, who was chewing gum during the performance, had to put the gum on her nose for the remainder of the “class”.

This show was a blast! Audience participation and the actress known only as “Sister” made the show a unique experience. Be sure to catch “Sister” again in Christmas Catechism coming to the Elms on Nov 20, 2011 at 2pm. For tickets, please go to www.TheElms.org

High School Spring Wrap UpBy Kim Murray

Each of us looks for various signs that tell us spring has finally arrived. These might include the sweet sound of birds chirping overhead; new blossoms making their entrance on the tree branches; flowers sprouting up through the ground; or the fresh smell of spring in the air.

Springtime for our athletes includes the anticipation of stepping out onto the ball field for the first time in a new season; the smell of leather from your softball mitt after putting it on for a catch; the crack of the bat; the sound of the starting pistol; the exchange of the baton or the stretch across the finish line at the end of a race.

However, for the spring athletes of 2011, the season will be remembered as one of the wettest spring on record. March and April arrived with an explosion of moisture and rain so intense, it seemed each day a new record was broken. The challenge for our teams was immeasurable; cold, rainy and even snowy weather for days and days. Yes, for the larger part of Northeast Ohio it was a disappointing spring to say the least. But even nature’s challenge, however, could not overshadow the loyalty and dedication that our spring athletes came to embrace. Each and every day they re-grouped and re-committed themselves to stay focused on a season still full of possibilities.

SOFTBALL

The 2011 Panther Softball team led by coaches Frank Voss, Kenn Parbel and Helen Bulford ’09 was made up of the following young athletes: seniors Ashley Harbaugh and Brittney Tyrpak; juniors Amy Cullen, Kaitlin Morse and Lauren Schaeffer; sophomores Gina Rich, Taylor Schmidt, Emily Scupholm, Sue Tran, Rachel Tustin, Alli Zmuda; and freshmen Natalie Anderson and Lexi Collins. The Panthers finished the season with a record of 6 – 11 and the following athletes were recognized with post-season honors:

1st Team Northeast Ohio – Kaitlin Morse ‘122nd Team Northeast Ohio – Ashley Harbaugh ‘11

Honorable Mention Northeast Ohio – Taylor Schmidt ‘13

TRACK and FIELD

The Panther Track team competed through the inclement weather no matter what the challenge. Class of 2011This year’s graduating class had the following as their Mission

Statement: “The Class of 2011 displays intelligence, creativity,

and originality in all that we do. We strive to be ambitious

and diplomatic in our everyday lives.” The Class of 2011

will be remembered as individuals and collectively for their

unique contributions to the Elms. These 42 young women

garnered more than $6.7 million in scholarships and were

accepted to over 190 colleges and universities. College

acceptances included Cornell, University of Notre Dame,

University of Rochester, Marquette, Wake Forest, The Ohio

State University, and Case Western Reserve University. Graduation

was a tremendous celebration. Valedictorian Margaret Waickman

and Salutatorian Elizabeth Klinger gave speeches that inspired

their classmates and made them laugh. The love and respect the

Class of 2011 had for their commencement speaker, Mary Lou Beers, who served as their retreat director during their junior year,

was palpable. Mrs. Beers touched her audience with warmth,

sincerity, faith, and humor. The class also honored Kripa Balaram

with the Service Award and Rachael Kosco with the Knights of

Columbus Womanhood Award.

The Class of 2011 showed depth and breadth of talent in all the

academic disciplines, the fine and performing arts, athletics,

leadership, and service. They left us with wonderful skits to the

best prank (in the truest sense of the word) in at least a decade.

With a tornado warning and subsequent “Take Shelter” exercise

during their Awards Night, the Class of 2011 has memories and

tall tales to tell for many years to come.

Beyond tangible accomplishments, we honor our most recent

graduates for who they have become as young women. The

class of 2011 excelled in the Dominican tradition and we are proud

of them. We wish them the very best personally and professionally!

School News

Elms Sophomore Attends World Leadership CongressBy Torie Luckenbaugh ‘13

This past spring I attended the local Ohio North HOBY seminar at the University of Mount Union. “HOBY” stands for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership. I was one of four Elms sophomores to attend HOBY this past spring. The others include Noelle Colant, Lauren Guido, and Alix King. There were over 150 ambassadors, all sophomores, from local high schools. The Ohio North seminar is one of four HOBY seminars in Ohio and one of multitudes of HOBY seminars across the country and the world. Every summer there is an International HOBY called WLC, or World Leadership Congress. It is a requirement for an ambassador to attend his or her local seminar in order to attend WLC. After attending the local seminar, an ambassador can apply to attend WLC at the end of July. I was fortunate enough to be one of the six ambassadors from the Ohio North seminar to attend WLC, this past summer. Although others from the seminar attended, I was the only student from the Akron area.

WLC took place July 23rd – July 30th in Chicago at Loyola University which was attended by over 400 high school students representing almost all 50 states and 10 countries. Upon arriving at the Congress, students were broken into groups of 11 or 12. In my group, nine states were represented as well as South Korea, Canada, and China. During the eight days at WLC, we discussed topics ranging from international economic conditions and poverty, to leadership through volunteering and leading ethnically and religiously diverse teams.

An important part of the HOBY experience is giving back to your community. We spent a day in Chicago participating in hands-on community service projects. My group visited a local service organization called “Working Bikes.” This organization takes in bikes that are abandoned or donated around the Chicago area. The bikes are then disassembled and sent to parts of Africa where bicycles are the crucial form of transportation.

Both the local seminars and the world HOBY have historically strong speaker programs, this year at WLC was no different. The speakers at WLC this year included Matthew Booth, Steven Harville and, my personal favorites, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Dr. Tererai Trent, one of Oprah’s all-time favorite guests. Since the conference, I have remained in contact with both Reverend Jesse Jackson and Dr. Tererai Trent. They have proven to be valuable resources for any and all questions I have asked them. HOBY goes beyond a traditional leadership seminar in that it is not simply just about leadership. HOBY is about building relationships with fellow peers from around the world, having intellectual discussion with those students who both agree and disagree with you, and building on your personal leadership to empower and lead those around you.

Mary Gillen Keller ‘561938- 2011 by Edna Dierker

On July 26th, Our Lady of the Elms High School lost one of its most cherished and most ardent supporters. Mary Keller’s lengthy battle with primary progressive aphasia, a debilitating

neurological condition, mercifully ended and she is at peace.Mary’s long love affair with the Elms High School began when, as a student, she enthusiastically embraced her studies, enjoyed student life, and developed a deep, thoughtful love of God. Thus began her life-long quest to honor God with her life. Following graduation, she went on to Ursuline College, graduating with a degree in Education. In the mid-80’s, Mary returned to the Elms. Early on she taught several different religion classes, a speech

class, and a newly-created Leadership Workshop. She also made time to chair a highly successful February Fantasy. Her greatest contributions to the Elms family were yet to come. When it became evident that the school needed to increase recruiting efforts in order to remain viable, she became the school’s first full-time Director of Admissions. This job change meant that she worked in the office during regular hours, but then spent countless additional evenings taking calls from interested parents, answering questions and scheduling classroom visits for prospective students. As one of the school’s major recruiters, she spent additional evenings in the homes of current parents and alumnae, making presentations to small groups of interested parents and their daughters. Mary was the Elms’ perfect spokeswoman – as a graduate and long-time supporter, she exuded love for her alma mater; she was grace-filled, intelligent, articulate, independent, confident, and always gracious. Who she was as a person gave testimony to the values of single-gender education. Our students, teachers, staff, parents, and the Sisters respected and loved her. We saw her as an incomparable role model. Dear Mary, you touched us all with your loving spirit.  You gave us the benefits of your many talents.  For these gifts we thank you and pay you a well-deserved tribute. “May He raise you up on eagle’s wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun And hold you in the palm of His hand.” –From On Eagle’s Wings, one of Mary’s favorite hymns

Mrs. Kermizis Throws the First PitchOn July 30th one of the Elms favorite alums and teacher, Martha Ganyard Kermizis ‘55 threw out the first pitch at the Akron Aeros baseball game with her husband Michael, daughter Lisa Kermizis Abraham ‘83, and many other friends, former student and the Aeros fans to cheer her on!  Lisa helped mom out with a pitching lesson from her friend, former Cleveland Indian Ty Kovach.  (And, of course, she made it over the plate!)

Marriage & three children, found us in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Lakewood, Ohio. After eight years, I returned to the work force, spending 28 years with Union Carbide/Praxair training.   Logistics. Retirement afforded me the option to move once again to Ohio. This time I chose Columbus, where our 3 children reside and who share with me my wonderful grandchildren - all seven. I have returned to work as an office manager - just to keep me out of trouble. Love it.”  Peggy Schobert ‘71 writes, “An awesome 40th reunion for O.L.E. Class of 1971 was held in July, and enjoyed by all! The invitation asked everyone to leave their baggage at the door. We didn’t care if you were fat or thin, had money or not, were successful or not, just come and reconnect. And reconnect we did!! Approximately 38 women enjoyed a two-day heartwarming event at the Akron-Fairlawn Hilton. Alums met Friday night for a casual gathering featuring heavy appetizers and an open bar while Saturday evening was a more formal event with a delicious dinner catered by the impeccable staff of the Hilton. All in all, it was a fun-filled reunion full of warmth and

Dear Elms Community,

Our Lady of the Elms School has reaped the benefits of the generosity of our alumnae, families and friends through this year’s Elms Fund for Excellence. Thank you to those who have already sent in a donation or pledged to send one in shortly. If you have not yet made your donation to support Our Lady of the Elms School and the outstanding Dominican education our students continue to receive, there is always time to do so.

As member of the Elms community, you have probably seen the difference that an Elms education has made in your life or the lives of others. Contributing to Our Lady of the Elms School sends a powerful message that an all-girls Catholic education is important in today’s society. In the new school year, please consider the various ways you can support Our Lady of the Elms, including: If your class is celebrating its reunion, please consider making a contribution in honor of your reunion

year and help your class increase its participation level.

Double your impact by donating towards the Raise the Roof Campaign. Our Lady of the Elms is replacing the 50 year old High School roof and the Lehner Family Foundation has challenged the Elms Community. They will match your gift dollar for dollar up to $100,000! Our total goal is $420,000.

The Circle of Angels has been able to provide tuition assistance for nine students. Without the support of our Angels, these girls would have had to go to another school and would not have been able to receive the outstanding Dominican education they receive today.

Elms Fund for Excellence. Help raise unrestricted revenue for the Our Lady of the Elms general operating fund which is used to help provide tuition assistance scholarships, classroom supplies, teacher’s salaries, campus improvements and technology.

We need your support to continue to educate future women leaders. If each of our alumnae, parents and friends would make a gift of just $100, we could raise over $550,000 in support for the school. If you can do more, that would be an added blessing. Please make a special, tax-deductible gift to Our Lady of the Elms today. Your generosity, at any level, ensures our continuing progress now and for generations to come.

Please use the enclosed envelope to return your gift or visit www.TheElms.org and make your gift online.

With many thanks and prayers for our Elms family members,

Julie A. Forgach Director of Institutional Advancement

The high school roof at Our Lady of the Elms is over fifty years old and we need your help to Raise the Roof.

The Lehner Family Foundation made a very generous gift of $100,000 towards the Raise the Roof campaign. They have also posed a challenge to the Elms community. The Lehner Family Foundation will match any gift made to the Raise the Roof campaign - up to $100,000. This means that any gift you make will be doubled - matched dollar for dollar - up to $100,000.

Help us Grow!Make a Gift Today & Double Your Impact.

The Elms Circle of Angels is a caring group of donors who wish to be contacted if a student or potential student is in need of tuition assistance. When contacted, donors may choose whether or not to support the student and at what level they are most comfortable. The generous donors who give to help a student through the Circle of Angels will earn their wings and receive a beautiful lapel pin.

Since the Elms Circle of Angels began in 2010, there are already four Angels who have donated to the fund. Through The Beck Family Foundation, Michael Beck and his daughter Kristin Clark Beck ’90, donated four years of full tuition for an incoming freshman who would not otherwise be able to attend the Elms. Both Ann Amer Brennan ‘51 and Ebony Miller Yeboah-Amankwah ’96 earned their wings by helping two incoming freshman for their four years at the Elms.

You can also help change the life of a potential Elms girl in the Elementary, Middle or High School! If you are interested in joining our Circle of Angels, please go to www.theelms.org/angels or contact Julie Forgach, Director of Institutional Advancement at 330.867.0751 or [email protected]. You will be notified when we have a student in need.
