How do you define time, talent and treasure? At the Elms, we measure time in terms of the school year – 178 days, 6 ½ hours per day, the 2010-2011 school year. Time passes in classes, mods and quarters, not hours, days and weeks.

This is Elms time.

Our talent is vast and widespread. To see evidence of the breadth of talent located on the Elms campus, you need only look at our statistics:

School News

Over 350 attendees stepped into the 1970s on February 26, 2011 to eat, bid and boogie on February 26 at February

Fantasy Fever 2011! Our Lady of the Elms raised over $190,000 to support Elms students. The Ralph Bernard $25,000 Scholarship Match brought in $64,000 total for scholarships and tuition assistance for the 2011-2012 school year.

Kate Kleski ’93, Elms alumna and Board member, worked with her parents, Katherine and Wayne Kleski, who are the owners of Katherine’s Collections . The Kleski’s donated the decorations and transformed Our Lady of the Elms high school into a 1970s disco with disco balls, disco kissing fish, dancing lights, silver garland, dancing cubes and Andy Warhol-esque images of Cher, Elton John, John Lennon and Liza Minnelli.

Guests were entertained by the Elms Encores show choir in addition to Cher, portrayed by Wayne Smith. Lucky auction winners Nancy Brennan and Steve Hopp each sang I Got You Babe with Cher. Guests also enjoyed hors d’oeuvre and dinner from Pazzo’s Catering.

Sr. Arleen Kisiel, Elms Board member and the Akron Motherhouse Coordinator for the Dominican Sisters of Peace, started the evening with an invocation. Board Chairperson, Susan Flowers, introduced the Elms newest program, Elms Circle of Angels, which is a caring group of donors who wish to be contacted if a student or potential student is in need of tuition assistance. When contacted, Angels may choose whether

or not to support the student and at what level. (See page 30 for more information). Michael Beck and Kristin Beck Clark ’90, were in attendance as the first Angels for their four year sponsorship of an incoming freshman Elms girl.

Carli Kistler-Miller ’87 thanked everyone involved with February Fantasy and recognized Susan Flowers, Steve Hopp and Lesley Weigand-McCauley ’89 for their dedication to the Elms Board of Trustees. Parent Leadership Awards were given to Renee Good by Lisa Massello and Michael Wilson by Marie Reichart ’99.

February Fantasy 2011 would not have been such a great success without committee members Renee Good, Jacki Sampsel, Marianne Spiros, Suzane Nicholas, Kate Kleski ‘93, Michael Wilson, Kaye Rowe, Susan Flowers, Carli Kistler-Miller ‘87, Julie Forgach, Peggy Smith ’65 and a long list of adult and student volunteers. February Fantasy

was kicked off with a groovy Patron Party planned by Anita Sears and held at Akrona Gallery on Feb 5, 2011. Major sponsors for February Fantasy included The Lehner Family Foundation, First Merit Wealth Management and AAA Akron Automobile Club and Travel Services.

Hoops for HabitsThe 2nd Annual 2010 Elms Hoops for Habits Girls Basketball Tournament exceeded expectations. The total number of participating teams increased as did the final amount raised for Crown Point Ecology Center.

On February 15th during halftime of the final home basketball game, the Panthers presented Chris Norman, Director of Crown Point Ecology Center with a check totaling $1,247. This represented proceeds raised at this year’s tournament event and reflects an increase of over $400 from the previous year.

The Panthers have secured eight varsity girls teams to participate in the 3rd Annual Hoops for Habits Basketball Tournament scheduled for November of 2011.

Service FairOur Lady of the Elms Social Action Club hosted the first annual Service Fair for fellow high school students in the region on February 17, 2011. The Service Fair featured speakers, Gerry Faust, former football coach for the University of Notre Dame and the University of Akron in addition to assistant men’s soccer coach, Oliver Slawson and a player from the championship men’s soccer team. The scheduled speakers talked to the students about the importance of getting involved in their community.

The service fair had booth displays from 20 different local service organizations seeking volunteers. Students were able to visit the booths to learn about opportunities for service to their community. The students were also able to sign up as a volunteer for the organizations.

First BookIn December 2010, the Elms Elementary School community joined together to wrap donated books to give to the Akron Chapter of the non-profit organization First Book. This organization’s mission is to provide access to new books for children in need. As part of this mission project, our students learned about the importance of children having a set of books they can call their own from one of the First Book volunteers. In all, the Elementary School donated over 300 brand new books to the organization.

Chains of LoveElms Social Action Club sold paper chains to raise over $500 that bought food for families affected by AIDS.

The High School Holiday Concert was a night filled with song and music. The 7th and 8th Grade Choir, Encores, and Chamber Choir, led by music teacher Maryrosa Hamed, participated in this program featuring different musical styles- from Classical to Broadway and culminating with an all-choir performance of Silent Night. The 7th and 8th Grade Choir led Silent Night while in total darkness. Their hands seem to float in the air as black lights lit their gloved hands while they signed in American Sign Language. Voices rang loud and clear as The Encores and Chambers joined them, the Chambers providing the descant. This beautiful song of peace and gratitude provided the finish to a wonderful evening.

Scholarship TeaThe high school celebrated the scholarship recipients of our incoming class of 2015 during our annual Scholarship Tea in December. Mica Brooks ‘15 was one of the recipients in attendance with her parents, Kevin and Mandy. We look forward to welcoming the class of 2015 next fall!

Shelf ElfElementary students look for more than just books when they come each week to the library. They check the elven mailbox because, Miles and Millie, the two Elms Library elves, have been answering their letters since the elves have been away in Europe. It is always a delight to receive a personal letter from one of the Elms Library Elves.

OlympicsElms Olympics was held on campus again this

year and fun was had by all. From the Opening Ceremony to the Closing Ceremony. The

competition was fierce and included the water balloon toss, class tug-of-war, dance-off, teacher

hunt and obstacle course. The Seniors are the 2010-11 Olympic Champions!

The Elms Academic Challenge Team was featured on WEW55’s competition on April 30. The team handily beat Andrews Osborne Academy and Ledgemont. The team also tied for second place in both the fall and winter seasons of the Summit County Academic Challenge.

Elementary School Thanksgiving Ecumenical ServiceThe kind-hearted children of God at Our Lady of the Elms Elementary School share their prayers for the needy in the Akron area during the Thanksgiving Ecumenical Prayer Service. Students collected canned food items for the Good Samaritan Hunger Center. The Thanksgiving Ecumenical Prayer Service celebrates the diverse faith backgrounds of our student body.

CYO SoccerThe combined 3rd/4th grade volleyball team, coached by Dave Murray and Bernice Roelen, won the CYO Division IIIA Bronze Championship Tournament. They won the 1st game, lost the 2nd then won the 3rd. The team players include 3rd graders Erynn Ouellette ‘20, Olivia Kovitch ‘20, Alexis Armstrong ‘20, Martina Roelen ‘20 and 4th graders Franny Murray ‘19, Christine Schoenbaechler ‘19, Maria Dhinojwala ‘19, Audrey Smith ‘19, and Sophie Vincenti ‘19.

All three CYO soccer teams advanced to their division championship games. The players gave their all. The 3rd/4th grade team and 7th/8th grade team finished as tournament runner-up and the 5/6 team tied in the championship game and finished as co-champs of their division.

Winter Sports Wrap-upBasketball“March Madness” was in the air!! The Panther basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a final home game against Ellet HS in a packed gymnasium. The atmosphere was electric!! Some highlights from the evening include performances by the Elms Chamber Choir and International Clubs, Senior Night Recognition, presentation to Crown Point from the Hoops for Habits Tournament…and let’s not forget two amazing games played by our very own Panther basketball teams. The Panthers raised the roof with a “buzzer beater basket” in the final seconds of the 4th quarter to seal the Varsity win!!

The season ended with a first round tournament loss to the Smithville “Smithies”.

Any sport fan knows one game does not define the team. However, one game was all it took to remind us of the unique bond the girls share with one another. The explosion of cheers and chants heard from the bench embodies their spirit. The girls call themselves the “Wolf Pack”, a theme adopted early in the season symbolizing “together as one”. Every player is a valued member of the team and played with the heart, determination and passion necessary to carry one another through the season. They embraced their roles as representatives of Our Lady of the Elms, and did so with integrity and honor.

The Panthers finished the year with 13 wins and 7 losses.

BowlingThe Panther Bowlers entered the 2010 season with the largest turn-out for participation seen in the last four years. The team wrapped up their season with tournament matches in mid February. Individual team members met personal goals by recording either a high game or a high series during match competition.

Judi Buzzi- Elementary SchoolWhen Judi Buzzi was a child she thought she’d be anything but a teacher. Her career aspirations seemed

to change with the wind but in reality it was tied to whatever book she was enthralled with at the time. Books and children have been her lifelines from her earliest memories. Our Lady of the Elms has been

Judi’s home over the last four years. It has been and continues to be a nurturing and collaborative environment in which she been able to put her personal and professional beliefs into daily practice. As an educator, she feels she has been blessed with many opportunities and challenges. Her professional

journey started simply here in Akron with Head Start and then on to Washington where she worked in a public school with many social challenges and limited resources. After teaching for six years, her mother challenged her to enter a masters program. It was with her encouragement that Judi attended Harvard

University. Her experiences there enabled her to return to Washington and work for Communities and Schools, Inc. as the Director of Training. In this position, Judi came to see the importance of enabling

children to see themselves as learners. She never imagined that her work as a teacher would take her from a kindergarten classroom to Harvard and then the White House. She is proud to say that she helped to expand the America Reads and DC Reads programs. When Judi decided to return home to Akron, she

found a position at University of Akron. When funding for her position ended, Judi wanted to return to the classroom and the Elms offered her a position. Children and books...back to her lifelines and true love.

In Judi’s own words: “I am grateful to be in a place which values children, celebrates learning, reflects on practice, and encourages questioning.” We are grateful she is here at The Elms as well.

Rose Gullo - PreschoolRose Gullo is currently in her 21st year of teaching Pre-school at Our Lady of the Elms. She believes she was destined to be an Elms teacher and has loved each of her years here on campus. When she was four years old, her cousin Grace Musci Marcotte from the class of 1957 used to bring her to visit the Sisters at the Convent. Although she still wishes she had the opportunity to have attended the Elms as a student, she considers herself privileged to teach the young girls and boys in the Elms Pre-school. She especially loves witnessing them grow into fine young ladies as they pray at Mass, compete in a CYO sport, and perform in the school plays. To Rose, there is nothing better than hearing of the success her past students experience in high school and college. Rose shares a special moment that captures the happiness teaching at the Elms has brought her: “I was especially touched one day when I was Christmas shopping at Summit Mall and I was stopped by one of my current Pre-school students and then another “Pre-schooler” who was a freshman at Loyola University in Chicago. She saw me and reintroduced herself after 16 years. Wow! I love the Elms!”

Debbie Lorincz – Middle SchoolWhen one thinks of the Middle School program at the Elms, most likely, one of the first people you might

think of is Mrs. Debbie Lorincz. Debbie has spearheaded the Middle School program for the past 18 years as the Middle School Director. She teaches 7th and 8th grade Social Studies as well as Advanced

Placement United States History to juniors. Some of her responsibilities include overseeing Convocation, MS Student Council, and 8th Grade Graduation. She has also organized the “Glory Girls” – 7th and 8th

grade volunteers to raise and lower the flag outside the high school office entrance. As part of her Social Studies program, Mrs. Lorincz has incorporated a trip to Williamsburg every other year for her students and

parents. She loves working with this age group so much. Debbie finds the students to be enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to learn. She loves being “stuck” in Middle School forever and feels

blessed to be part of the Elms community!

Elaine Fippin – High SchoolThe Elms is truly a home away from home for Elaine Fippin. In her twenty-third year as a teacher of English, speech, and theater, Mrs. Fippin can think of no better place to work. Her students and fellow colleagues continue to inspire her. Along with her esteemed department, Mrs. Fippin is proud of a robust curriculum and many enrichment opportunities. Each year, students in grades seven through twelve enjoy a professional theater production at Great Lakes Theater, and for three years, Great Lakes has brought a traveling production to our own stage. The Elms Speech Team has earned a fine reputation and many accolades during the Fippin era. Certainly Mrs. Fippin can’t forget the plays and musicals that have delighted audiences and brought joy to the director. The Elms community has offered so many professional and artistic opportunities to Mrs. Fippin, and she is genuinely grateful. But in the end, the special students who pass through her classroom door are the enduring blessings; whether quietly and diligently writing essays, or engaging in lively discussions, or rehearsing speeches and plays for the millionth time, students always make Mrs. Fippin want to be the best teacher possible.

Catherine Szary ‘60Elms Alumnae Gives BackNearly 40 years ago, Ms. Catherine M. Szary (Cathy) graduated from Our Lady of the Elms. Even though she graduated and moved on with her life, she never forgot her alma mater. Cathy always spoke highly of Our Lady of the Elms and enjoyed being a part of the Elms family. She also consistently made annual gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence to support the Elms ongoing mission: Our Lady of the Elms, an independent, Catholic school rooted in the Dominican tradition, educates girls and young women to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly, and serve compassionately.

Cathy believed that “the school relies on philanthropy in order to advance academic excellence and that it was important to give back what little I could afford each time”. While nearly 75% of the Elms’ operational budget is covered by tuition, the additional 25% necessary for operational costs must be covered through generous donations. The operating budget pays for teachers’ salaries, classroom supplies, extra-curricular activities, campus maintenance, and so many other costs associated with educating an Elms girl.

Cathy liked the idea of a single-gender education because it helps to guide girls and young women to find their voice, while focusing on the many ways they learn and grow. It’s not just in the classroom. It’s the combination of the Elms community, the culture and the expectations that our school instills, that makes the education the Elms offers such a powerful and transformative experience.

Over the years, Cathy’s generosity supported Our Lady of the Elms in many ways. She gave of her treasure by supporting the Elms Fund for Excellence. She gave of her time by volunteering or participating in events on Campus like the Blessing of the Animals with her dog, Skipper.

Cathy recently passed away, yet she continues to passionately support Our Lady of the Elms efforts to educate future women leaders. Cathy made a generous planned gift, investing in the future of the Elms because she knew that students being educated at the Elms today will become the leaders of tomorrow.

Each gift made to Our Lady of the Elms through the Elms Fund for Excellence or through Planned Gifts, provides unique opportunities for our students. WHAT IS THE ELMS FUND FOR EXCELLENCE?The Elms Fund for Excellence, is the most popular way that alumnae, parents and friends support the school. The Elms Fund for Excellence directly supports the unique intellectual adventure at Our Lady of the Elms. Tuition covers about 71% of the cost of this education. The remaining 29% comes from generous donor support - including gifts from you. Gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence provide budget relieving support to some of the most important areas on campus including tuition assistance, academic support, athletic programs, student activities, and campus maintenance. Gifts to the Elms Fund for Excellence are expended in the same fiscal year in which they are received. All students, whether or not they receive financial aid, benefit from gifts made to the Elms Fund for Excellence by alumnae, parents and friends.

Information Technology @ the ElmsBy Dan McGee, Director of Technology

Technology in the 21st century has proven to be an essential tool in nearly every aspect of our lives. Just as the Elms meets the challenge of academic excellence in subject areas present in the school since its founding, new technologies have become mainstream in the world and the classroom. The ideas

of 21st century skills relating to technology, creativity, and research are currently being firmly embedded in the academic fabric of our school.

In terms of educational and administrative technology at the Elms, we have successfully remained ahead of other similar institutions. Our basic information technology infrastructure continues to be evaluated with the goal of exceptional education in mind. In late 2010, we were able to complete a seamless switchover of the Elms’ phone system, while adding phones to classrooms. This project will enable a cost savings to the School. Students in grades 9-12 were given Elms email accounts, and all students were provided with Elms-branded Google Docs accounts, furthering our focus on empowering and educating through technology. In looking to the future, a group of parents, students, and faculty recently came together to discuss feasibility of a One to One laptop program.

The faculty at the Elms uses technology in engaging ways. Each classroom in the Elementary School is outfitted with a SmartBoard interactive whiteboard, while almost all the High School classrooms have SmartBoards. An Elementary School teacher is blogging with her students, teaching them how to collaborate online in today’s society with peers as well as experts in the field of science and

technology. English and World Language classes in the High School use Moodle to take their class discussions online and address students’ multiple intelligences.

Technology use at our school introduces a host of needs. Examples of current school technology needs include, replacing current computer hardware for students and teachers, software upgrades, SmartTables for the preschool, and keeping faculty and staff current on technology trends and developments. We function as an educational community with the goal of giving our students the tools needed to succeed in their future careers – some of which are not yet in existence. The Elms Circle of Angels is a caring group of donors who wish to be contacted if a student or potential student is in need of tuition assistance. When contacted, donors may choose whether or not to support the student and at what level they are most comfortable. The generous donors who give to help a student through the Circle of Angels will earn their wings and receive a beautiful lapel pin.

Since the Elms Circle of Angels began in 2010, there are already four Angels who have donated to the fund. Through The Beck Family Foundation, Michael Beck and his daughter Kristin Clark Beck ’90, donated four years of full tuition for an incoming freshman who would not otherwise be able to attend the Elms. Both Ann Amer Brennan ‘51 and Ebony Miller Yeboah-Amankwah ’96 earned their wings by helping two incoming freshman for their four years at the Elms.

Sr. Maryagnes Slattery, OP ‘42May 27, 1923 – November 22, 2010Sr.MaryagnesSlattery(Sr.M.Robert) died on Monday,November22, 2010, at the age of 87 at Regina HealthCenter(Richfield,OH)inher 67th year of religious profession. ShewasborninAkron, OH, and wasthedaughterofthelateThomasandMaryReganSlattery;shewasoneoftenchildren.MaryagnesenteredtheSistersofSt.DominicofAkrononJune20,1941,fromSt.PaulParish;graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High Schoolin1942;andmadereligiousprofessionasSr.M.RobertonJuly25,1943.SheearnedaBSEfromSt.JohnCollege(Cleveland,OH)in1955.For32years,Sr.Maryagnesministeredineducation, mostly as a primary teacher at schoolsinOhio,includingSt.Joseph(Alliance),St.Augustine(Barberton),St.HilaryandOurLadyoftheElms(Akron),SS.Peter&Paul(Doylestown),andSt.Felicitas(Cleveland).Sheexcelledinteachingreading,numbers,andwriting and in preparing second graders for theirfirstreconciliationandEucharist.Someof her former students have said that she was the best teacher they had. Her positive attitude, smiling face, and infectious laugh won her many friends among her students, their parents, and theSisterswithwhomshelived.Afterleavingtheclassroomin1975,sheservedtheelderlyintheinnercityofClevelandasactivitiesdirectoratSt.MartindePorresCenter.Byherheartylaugh and gentle manner, she endeared herself to those to whom she ministered.In1977,Sr.MaryagnesmovedtoDenver,CO,where she ministered as activities director forseniorcitizensatCityParkManor.Afterbecomingcertifiedasapastoralminister,sheservedfortenyearsaspartofa15-memberpastoralteamatSt.AnthonyHospital.Shewasalso involved with the hospital’s bereavement ministryandworkedwithpatientssufferingfromcancer;thehospitallaterhonoredherforheroutstandingservice.In1989,Sr.MaryagnesbecamechaplainatMercyMedicalCenterinDenver.ShereturnedtoAkronin1996andvolunteeredattheElmsWellnessCenterandat Rockynol Nursing Home before retiring to ReginaHealthCenterin2002.

Sr. M. Eileen Pentecost, OPApril 24, 1918 – February 26, 2011Sr.M.EileenPentecost(92)diedonSaturday,February 26, 2011, at ReginaHealthCenter(Richfield,Ohio)inher73rdyearofreligiousprofession. Rosemary PentecostwasbornonApril24,1918,inNashville, Tennessee, to FrankandHelenMae(RothenburgPentecost.Becauseofherfather’sjobwithBFGoodrichRubberCompany,Rosemaryandherfamilymoved to Akron when she was young. Sr.LauraalsomadegarlandsandwreathsfrommaterialsgrownatCrownPoint,conductedtours of the farm, and used her sewing skills to create a quilt that was always donated for TasteofEarth,theCenter’sannualdinnerandfundraiser. In2001,Sr.Lauraalsovolunteeredasco-moderator of the Friends of the Elms, and also utilizedhertalentstocreateblanketsforthepoorandtakeonprojectstobenefitCrownPointandtheElms.In2009,theWomen’sHistoryProjectpresentedtheFaithAwardtoSr.Laura in honor of her work in the community to better the lives of others. Aside from her leadership and work in theclassroom,atCrownPoint,andinthecommunity,Sr.Laurawillberememberedfor the many local gardens for which she was the inspiration, and for her work with local volunteerstowhomshereadilyofferedherwisdom and knowledge.

Author! Author! wrap up and 25th anniversaryAuthor! Author! 2010 proved to be a very successful year garnering over $12,000 for the Alumnae Association Academic Scholarships. The 2011 season brings the 25th Anniversary of Author! Author!. Planning is underway and alumnae are needed to help carry out this Alumnae Association sponsored event. Alumnae Family EveningOn Saturday, July 30th, 2011 the Alumnae Association will host an Alumnae Family Evening. The evening will begin with 4pm Mass in the Convent Chapel. Following Mass alumnae, family, school staff, and the sisters are invited to Canal Park for a BBQ and the 7:05pm Akron Aeros game. This event is open to the entire family. Alumnae are encouraged to bring spouses, children, parents, & grandchildren.

Akron MarathonOur Lady of the Elms Alumnae Association is an official Charity Partner for the Akron Road Runner Marathon on Saturday, September 24th, 2011. Class ReunionsIf you graduated in a year ending in 1 or 6, 2011 is a milestone reunion year. The following classes are in the process of planning their 2011 Class Reunions. 2006- The class of 2006 will be celebrating their five year class reunion in late July or early August. The reunion will be held at either Bricco in downtown Akron or at a class member’s home. 2001- Plans are underway for the class of 2001, who will be celebrating their 10 year reunion, sometime over the 2011 holidays. AlumnaeAlumnae Spotlight

Yet again, I am one of only a handful of

women in a restaurant full of diplomats, peacekeepers, and businesspeople drawn to the West African nation of Liberia to assist in (or profit

from) its recovery from more than a decade of civil war. As the West and North Africa Program Officer for the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, I manage the United States’ humanitarian responses to refugee crises—in Liberia, to the recent inflow of more than 70,000 refugees from neighboring Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia is the home of strong and resilient women, most notably Africa’s first woman President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, so naturally it makes me think of the Elms.

I arrived at the Elms a timid 8th grader and recent transplant from Litchfield Middle School in West Akron. At OLE, I was impressed by strong girls who have since become strong women; inspired by creative and committed teachers like Mrs. Kermizis and Mrs. Fippin; and introduced to a rich spiritual life under the guidance of devoted religion teachers and through the life-changing Kairos retreat that I undertook as a Junior and Senior. I believe the Elms made a woman more comfortable in her skin and with being principled and assertive even when social convention suggests that young ladies should behave otherwise.

I graduated in 1997 and went on to The Ohio State University where I graduated with honors in Political Science in 2001. I completed my Master’s degree in Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, concentrating on political and economic development in less-developed countries. Since then, I have worked in the interest of displaced populations seeking asylum and refuge wherever they can find it, from Algeria to Arlington, VA; Mauritania to Minneapolis; Ethiopia and Chicago to right here in Liberia. I represent the generous people of the United States whose tax dollars help provide food, shelter, medicine and clean water to persecuted peoples all over the world. I credit my Elms experience for helping me to be strong enough to advocate for the needs of these people in crisis and compassionate enough to speak tenderly to the most traumatized.

UpdatesElms Class of 1960 celebrated their 50th High School Reunion on September 25th. The Class enjoyed visiting with the sisters, touring the school and reconnecting with classmates. Shown right.

Terry Peddle Corcoran ’71 graduated from Ohio State University in 1975. She worked as a work site supervisor for the Kevin Coleman Center behavioral health facility, in Kent, Ohio. Terry moved south in 1979 and has lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and presently Georgia. Terry is an artist and continues to sell and exhibit throughout the Southeast.

Diane VanDyne McKee ‘71 writes, “I have 2 sons from my first marriage in 1972. Russell in 1976 and Scott in 1980. Divorced in 1988. I remarried in 2004 to Floyd McKee. We live on several acres with horses and mules. I no longer ride due to a back injury when I got thrown from my horse. I work for the Federal Government at DFAS in Columbus Ohio for 20 years now. I went to college on and off for several years and have decided to finally finish. I am going to Park University part time in evenings and/or online. About a dozen classes to go.”

Leslie Costanzo Janikis ’72 graduated from the University of Akron with her BS in Accounting and now works as a CPA/owner in her family’s firm. She is also a part owner in a home health care company called Midwest Homecare in Cuyahoga Falls. She was married in 1980 and has three children. Adam lives in Chicago and is an accountant. Emily is in graduate school in Pittsburgh and Samantha is a sophomore at Ohio University. She keeps busy spending time with family, friends, playing bunco and bridge.

Anne Vainer Najeway ’76 was honored with an Alumni Achievement Award from Hiram College in June 2010 for her years of service in Education. Anne served for 15 years as Director of Student Services for Barberton City Schools, in addition to her 16 years with the Sagamore Hills Child Psychiatric Hospital. Anne retired from Barberton

City Schools in 2010 and was honored by the City at a large retirement party proclaiming the great contributions she made to the district over the years, including a $76K accessible playground.

Patricia Scurvy Scavo ’80 is married with 3 children in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is currently a Manager at Ann Taylor. She lived in Captiva Island, Florida, Sanibel Island, Florida and Surf City, North Carolina. Patricia also spent time managing an Italian restaurant in Cincinnati, as its owner.

Kelly Cregan ‘86 received her MSW degree from the University of Maryland in 1999. She has had a private practice in psychotherapy since 2004.

Jen (aka Jenny) Cook ‘ 87 lives in Washington, DC with her husband Randy Kaplan and their two children: Zachary (8) and Zoe (6). Jen is an attorney who works on health care policy issues for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Her husband, Randy, is an attorney with U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Caroline Kilcoyne Gronowski ‘87 and Judy Beringer Quinn ’87 recently opened Yoga Bliss in Fairlawn which is an awesome yoga studio and boutique that sells yoga clothing and goodies. Cara states, “There’s a teaching style and class for every body! Every shape, size, and fitness level is welcome at this safe, non-judgmental space.” (See ad on page 43). Cara is the owner and Judy is the business manager.

Sarah Flannery ‘94 was named a partner at Thompson Hine LLP on January 1, 2011. Sarah’s practice focuses on counseling and representing employers on immigration matters and I-9 compliance, as well as aspects of employment law with an emphasis on preventative counseling and litigation. Sarah and her husband, Phillip Slaught welcomed their third son, Keagen Richard on January 6, 2011.

Connie Thackaberry ‘94 graduated from Kent State Honors College as a Founders Scholar with a BA in English. She went on to graduate from the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University in NYC with a MFA in Acting as the Leopold Schepp Scholar. Currently Connie serves as the Senior Artistic Associate for Actors’ Summit, a professional non-profit theater company located in Greystone Hall in downtown Akron. Connie has appeared on stage a multitude of times with various theaters and acting companies. She has been married to Keith E. Stevens for 8 years.

Stacie Gless Smith ’96, husband Vernon, and 2 year old daughter, Allison welcomed triplets, Madelyn, Vernon IV, and Katelyn on March 11, 2010. Stacie is staying busy being Mommy to 4 and teaching K-3 PE in Vermillion. (see pic Gless triplets)

Jessica Smith Badger ‘97 shares, “In the last several years there has been so many things going on in my life. I am married and have a son. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and in remission. Now I am a stay at home mom and wife.”

Jennifer Smith Dershem ’97 writes, “My husband Keith and I welcomed our first child, Michael Donald Dershem, into the world on October 14, 2010. Shortly after, we relocated to Newport, Kentucky. After 10 years of teaching elementary school, I am taking some

time off to stay at home with Michael.”

Ann Moss Manby ’98 and Elms Little Sis, Katie Woodruff Smeltz ’02 recently reconnected for playdates with their little girls. The little ones from left are Courtney Manby, Lorelei Smeltz, and Melanie Smeltz.

Anne Fulton Hardman ’99 became the bride of Scott Edward Roddy the evening of September 18 at the Fairlawn Country Club in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Mark J. Pruitt of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The bride was attended by her sisters Jane McCahan Hardman ’02 and Claire Crawford Hardman ’06. The couple traveled to the Hawaiian Islands for a two week wedding trip. Anne graduated from Denison University and Simmons College. She is a RN, CPN at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

Jacqui Shine ’01 writes, “I’m a PhD candidate in History at the University of California, Berkeley, where I received my Master’s degree in 2009; I expect to complete my doctorate in the next two years. In 2008, I married my wife, Britta, in the brief period when the California ban on gay marriage had been overturned. We met at Smith College, where I received my B.A. in 2005. She’s a preschool

teacher and we live with three cats and one very handsome dog in Berkeley, just outside of San Francisco.”

Jeanne Pearson Heintzinger ’02 shares, “My husband, Geoff, and I had a son, Jeremiah Theodore on June 4, 2010. He was born at 3:25 am and was 6 lbs. 14 oz. and 19 inches long. We are so happy to have been blessed with him!”

Colleen Baugh Harlan ‘02, husband Jesse, and their first daughter, Hanna Marie, welcomed Angele Therese (“Angie”) Harlan into their family on December 3, 2010. Colleen lives in Akron and loves being with the girls as well as doing a little medical billing from home. She can be reached

Bridget Hopp ‘02 graduated from the University of Richmond in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Immediately following college, she attended Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, OH and graduated cum laude in May 2009. She passed the bar in October 2009 and is currently employed as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the City of Cleveland.

Jessica McFall Forrest ’03 writes “2010 was a big year! I finished 4th of 140 at Akron Law in May. On October 10, 2010, I married the man of my dreams, Matthew Forrest!”

Amy Rector ’04 has been accepted into the Master of Science in Nursing Program at Case Western Reserve University, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing beginning in Fall 2011. Amy graduated in 2008 from Case Western Reserve University with a BSN in Nursing and has been working in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit at the Cleveland Clinic since 2008. She recently passed the CCRN exam and is not certified in Critical Care Nursing. Amy’s concentration will be Nurse Anesthesia.

Caroline Elizabeth Westman ’04, was married to Andrew John Laski, of Shawnee, KS on October 24, 2009 at Hale Farm Chapel in Bath, Ohio. Elms Alumna, Lindsey Westman Fierer ’01, the bride’s sister, served as matron of Honor, and Elms chum, Kaedra Wetzel ’04 was a bridesmaid for the event. A wedding

reception was held following the ceremony at Portage Country Club. Caroline and Andrew honeymooned in Lanai, Hawaii and are at home in Blacksburg, VA. Caroline is a Graphic Designer employed by Coldwell Banker.

Kaedra Wetzel ’04, graduated in 2008 from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In March of 2010, she was awarded a Master’s degree in Public Health from Ohio State University. Kaedra is employed as an Associate in the Environmental Risk and Toxicology Group by ICF International in Fairfax, Virginia where she now resides.

Carly Giebel ’05, currently serving with the United States Marine Corps graduated from the Marine Corps Base Quantico Officer training, The Basic School in Quantico Virginia on October 7, 2010. 2DLT Giebel will continue her training in Counter Intelligence in Damneck, Virginia. She will then be stationed in Monterey, California.

Amanda King ’05 graduated from Ohio State University in 2009 an received her Masters degree in Education from the College of William and Mary in 2010. She is currently an Experience Programs Teacher at COSI in Columbus, Ohio. Rachel is currently making meals for the boys of Sigma Chi.

Anne H. Pengilly ’05 graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in May 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Music Performance. She is currently enrolled in a post-baccalaureate program at West Chester University to earn her teaching certificate in music education.

Justine Clark Reed ’06 married Derek Reed on June 26, 2010 at St. Barbara in Massillon. Gabrielle Spiros ‘06 was the maid of honor and Lindsey Chapman (Daughter of Marissa Huff Chapman ’96) was the flower girl. The couple lives in Portage County. Derek is Lieutenant of the Palmyra Fire Department. Justine is employed with Hilscher Clarke Electric Company in Canton as their accountant. Justine will receive her MBA in May 2011 and will be the youngest graduate in her class. She plans on receiving her CMA, CFE and CPA certifications in 2011.
