a message from dr. price invitation to salvation

In order to navigate through this world, it takes wisdom. Not justthe wisdom of this world, but the wisdom that God offers freely in HisWord. God wants success and prosperity for His children, so Hemade sure we had clear instructions on how to get the best out of life.

We are so committed to equipping Believers that Dr. Betty and Ihave written a number of books to help you with your walk with God,to learn how to pray and use the Word in our favor. Next year, we willbe launching the new Apostle Frederick Price Ministry Training

Center (read about it on page 11.) Withclasses like Faith Foundations andDivine Wisdom, it's another opportuni-ty to get more knowledge to equipBelievers in their walk with God.

In this issue of the magazine, Dr.Betty shares an article “On MakingWise Choices” and our feature story is“Fail Proof Living,” an extensive teach-ing I recently taught. God really lovesus and has surrounded us with the toolsto live a life where we are winning.

I'm very pleased that Dr. GeneLingerfelt, pastor of Overcoming FaithChristian Center shares an excerptfrom his new book, “80-10-10,Everyman's Road to Riches.” Heshares some solid advice on handlingyour money wisely. Every one would dowell to take heed to these principles.

Indeed the fear of the Lord is thebeginning of wisdom. Having a holy, reverent fear of God opens the door towisdom for us. But

you must continue in wisdom to reap its benefits.Once you grab hold of God's Word and apply itto your life, you can rest assured that God will leadyou in the right way.

The fear ofthe LORD isthe beginningof wisdom; A

good under-standing haveall those whodo His com-

mandments.”

econd Peter 1:5 - 10:“…giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue,to virtue knowledge, toknowledge self-control,

to self-control perseverance, to perse-verance godliness, to godliness broth-erly kindness, and to brotherly kind-ness love. For if these things are yoursand abound, you will be neither barrennor unfruitful in the knowledge of ourLord Jesus Christ. For he who lacksthese things is shortsighted, even toblindness, and has forgotten that hewas cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more dili-

gent to make your call and electionsure, for if you do thee things you willnever stumble.”

That word stumble in the tradi-tional King James says fall and it liter-ally means to fall down or fail. NowHe said you will never stumble, neverfall, never fail. That word never literal-ly means by no means ever. It also car-ries the idea by no means, not even atany time. God says that if you will dothese things you will never fail, neverfall, never stumble, never. That'sincredible.

Our subject is fail proof living.Living without failing. Failure in anyarea of life, whether in the naturalrealm or the spiritual realm has to be apermitted response. In other words itjust can't automatically happen. Wemust give our permission.

If we want to live fail proof theseare our responsibilities. God says, inverse 5 “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith…”Now we start out with faith as rebornchildren of God. But then he says addto your faith. That's our responsibilityto add to it. Add what to it? Addvirtue, knowledge, self-control, perse-verance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. He said if we do these things

we will never, never fail. In this short writing, I will

be talking about self-control. Whenyou turn around this term self-controlyou are saying, in essence, control self.It is obvious just by observation, thatthere are multitudes of spirit-filled,tongue talking. Bible-toting, faith-believing Christians that are out ofcontrol.

One area that God has me minis-ter on is self-control with regards tobeing overweight. Your body is a giveaway because your body is always talk-ing even when you don't open yourmouth. All you have to do is look. Justopen your eyes and see. In 1Corinthians 9: 25-27 Paul says: “Andeveryone who competes for the prize istemperate in [That word temperatemeans to have self-control, so it couldsay controlled in] all things. Now theydo it to obtain a perishable crown, butwe for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncer-tainty. Thus I fight: not as some whobeats the air. But I discipline my bodyand bring it into subjection, lest, whenI have preached to others, I myselfshould become disqualified.”

In the traditional King James this

verse says, But I discipline my body…That's what it is all about. But there isanother statement-Paul says, I keepunder my body and bring it into sub-jection. Now pick up on this. I keepunder my body and bring it [my body]into subjection.

He says, “I keep under my body.”“My body.” Now I and my are one.But body is separate from I and my.The word my is a designation of own-ership, control, or overseer. He says,“I keep under my body.” As I have saidso often before your body is not you.

My and I has a body. In referenceto the things of God, I and my liveinside of the body. Now the I and myis the part of your threefold naturewhich has been born again--made newin Christ Jesus. That's the spirit partof you because you are a spirit made inthe image and likeness of God.

However, your body has never, ever been affected by the new birth.Your body is exactly like it was beforeyou ever heard of Jesus. That's whyPaul said, “I keep under my body.”When he said, “I keep under,” hemeans I keep my body under control. Not underneath the seat or under thecouch. He means under control.

If the Word had said, “I put undermy body,” then you would only have todo it one time. This word keep is anawesome word. He said, “I keepunder my body.” Well you wouldn'thave to keep anything under controlunless it had a propensity for being outof control. If you could just put it thereyou wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. But he said, “I keep it.”

Why Paul? Because all flesh (bod-ies) want to get out from under. And,if it gets from under, then it will dragour spirit and soul into the same clan-destine problem situations that it getsinto. So I've got to keep my bodyunder control so it doesn't get out ofcontrol. Everybody's body is exactlythe same because we all came from thesame sinful source. There is no goodflesh. That's why you've got to keep itunder.

So if I add control to my lifestyleGod said I would never stumble. Ifyou will be real honest about it proba-bly ninety-seven and nine tenths per-cent of all of the problems you haveever gotten into has been because ofyour body. In fact, right now if someof you could get rid of your bodies youwouldn't have any more problems inlife. I wonder can I get an amen. —EIF

Deuteronomy 30:19:I call heaven and earth as witnesses today

against you, that I have set before you life and death,blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life, thatboth you and your descendants may live;

he word choose or choice means using your free will tomake decisions concerning your life. We have the awe-some privilege to use our will to make choices that influ-ence our lives for good or for bad. The dictionary says the

word choice also means the ability to recognize alternative and possi-ble consequences, thereby enabling the selection of that which is mostdesirable, admirable and honorable. There are several choices thatwe make in life that are essential to our well being.

First, the most awesome choice anyone can ever make is tochoose Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. If you havenever done this, the Bible says you are living in death more than in life.

In John 14:6 Jesus says: I am the way, the truth, and the life. Noone comes to the Father except through Me. Jesus is the only way toGod. There are a lot of other gods in the world calling for your atten-tion. If you are following another who says, “I am one of the ways,”you are on dangerous grounds. Jesus is the only way.

Romans 10:9 says: that if you confess with your mouth the LordJesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from thedead, you will be saved. That is how you get born again, by confess-ing Jesus as Lord and believing He was raised from the dead for yourbenefit.

The second choice that is essential to your life is to be filled withGod's Holy Spirit. John 14:26 says: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I have said to you.

Acts 1:8 says: But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirithas come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. After youhave received Christ, then you need to receive the Holy Spirit, because He is the One who gives us the power to live the overcominglife. So many of us as Christians lived without the Helper for so longbecause we didn't understand the importance of receiving Him. Yes,we were born of the Spirit when we received Jesus, but that does notmean we were filled with the Spirit, because if you are not speakingwith tongues according to Acts 2:4, you are not filled with the Spirit.

Fred and I lived a defeated life for 17 years. We were born of the

Spirit of God, but we didn't have the power to live the victorious over-coming life. First Corinthians 14:2 tells us why we need to speak withtongues: For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but toGod, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaksmysteries (or divine secrets).

This is the only verse in the Bible, which tells us that we canspeak directly to God. When you speak with tongues, you are notspeaking to yourself or to others; you are speaking only to God. Verse4 says: He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…. In other words,by praying in tongues, you build yourself up in the spirit, so that yourspirit will be strong.

Many Christians are struggling in their lives today because theirspirits are weak. People in the world do all sorts of things just toplease man. Christians should want to be filled with the Holy Spiritand do everything that God would have them to do so they canreceive the incorruptible crown of life instead of being deceived by thefalseness that is in the world.

Each of us needs to choose to continue in God's Word. Thereare too many Christians who don't continue in the Word or continuein prayer. You should always take time to talk to God every singleday. When you do, you are being obedient to the Word, and you willreap the benefits.

We are to all live as God, in the midst of a crookedand perverse generation. At the same time, there are somewho are called to function in the church as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers that needinstruction, training and mentoring as such.”

009 has certainly been an exciting year for Crenshaw ChristianCenter (CCC). With all of the exhilaration from this past spring'sretirement of Apostle Frederick K.C. Price and the installation of hisson, Pastor Frederick K. Price, CCC has been almost breathless with

progressive changes. But the excitement doesn't just stop on the West Coast-for over two

years there has been a celebration of sorts going on over on the East Coast.CCC East had been celebrating since April 1, 2007 when Terry B. Starks tookover the pulpit as the newest pastor of the New York congregation.

In an effort to be amusing, Apostle Price pulled a pretty good AprilFools' Day prank on the New York members by declaring that CCC East wasclosing its doors and moving back to California. Shocked and disappointed, the crowd was relieved with news that not only was Apostle Price joking andthat CCC East was here to stay, but the flock had a new shepherd-PastorTerry Starks.

Anyone who meets Terry, 50, and his stunning wife, Lynda, 45, areimmediately mesmerized by their effervescence and charisma. I mean, this cou-ple has it going on.

Paired with Terry's enthusiasm and passion for teaching the Word ofGod, is Lynda's sophistication and attention to detail. Together, the dynamicduo is all about taking care of kingdom business.

Like any good “coming to Jesus” story, the Terry Sparks life storyincludes some hard knocks overcome by God's mercy and faithfulness. Born inMemphis, Tennessee, Sparks grew up in a rough neighborhood, surroundedby negative elements that are common to inner-city life. Sparks got swept up inthe fast, easy and illegal business of drug dealing. The big money he made outon the streets afforded him a kind of high-roller lifestyle that included owning arecord label (Mega Jams Records) and luxury vehicles.

In summer of 1991, Terry met Lynda one day while driving throughtown. Lynda, a Cairo, Illinois native, was working as a biology laboratorysupervisor at nearby Rhodes College. She was not at all impressed with hisflashy, hustler type vibe. But Terry was ambitious-and lucky.

“I was driving with my friends in my Lexus LS400 when I see this beau-tiful woman in a Nissan Pulsar,” Terry energetically re-enacts the story. “Inoticed her and knew that I had to talk to her, so I backed up. I asked her 'whatare you doing in this neighborhood?'”

“That's when I asked him, 'do you know everyone in this neighborhood?'”Lynda interjects just as emphatically.

“I told her, 'yeah, I'm the mayor',” Terry chuckles. “I wanted to make herlaugh.”

Impressed by his charm, she decided to give him her phone number.“Yeah, he was funny,” she said with a smile as she relived the moment of theirfirst meeting. “I liked how persistent he was.”

Persistence paid off as the two married on February 15, 1992. But thewedded bliss didn't last long.

Federal law-enforcement eventually caught up with Terry's drug dealingenterprise and from 1992-93 he served time in a federal prison. In 1993, he wastransferred to a Puerto Rican prison where he stayed for one year. In 1994, hewas returned back to Tennessee to finish out his prison sentence until 1996when he was released.

For Terry, the ordeal in Puerto Rico was what he refers to as his“Damascus Road” experience and he gives God all the glory for it.

“I got there screaming and crying and acting up, but I praise God that Hewas had me there for a reason,” Terry says.

Surrounded by Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican prison guards and a ver-bally abusive warden, Terry found himself in a humbling and terrifying situa-tion. He knew that he was unjustly sent to Puerto Rico, so he wrote a letter

requesting answers. That was a mistake-hewas sent to solitary confinement for 24 hours.

But we know that nothing God everdoes is a mistake.

“I was in that cell, no one spokeEnglish, and I was at the lowest point in mylife,” Terry recalls as the moment thatchanged his life. “A little white lady-I nevergot her name-came by and asked if I wouldlike a book. I requested a Bible. She gave mea Good News Bible. Three days later whenI was let out of solitary, a preacher led me toChrist and I received Jesus as my personalLord and Savior.”

While in prison, Terry meditated onProverbs 3:5-6 and Luke 9:23 and developed a hunger to know more and moreabout how Jesus can fix the situation that he got himself into. Meanwhile, backin Memphis, Lynda had to cope with not only being separated from her Terry, but also had to help clean up the mess he left back in the States.

“I worked two jobs to pay everything that he had left behind…,” she stat-ed. “…I had no one to whine or complain to so I just kept going.”

It was during this period when the young couple had their classic “com-ing to Jesus moment” that all testimonies are built on. It was a turning point notonly in Terry's life, but also for his new bride back in Memphis. When Terryreturned back to Tennessee in 1994 to finish out his prison sentence, Lyndalearned of his spiritual transformation.

Raised in a Catholic family, Lynda's spiritual leader was her mother andthe Bible was little more than a bunch of old stories that her grandmother usedto recite to her while growing up. So after seeing the difference God was mak-ing in her incarcerated husband's life, Lynda soon followed and was born againin 1995.

With God now in control over both of their hearts, life for the reunitedcouple began to really take off. Shortly after his release from prison in 1996,Terry parlayed those business skills he learned during his old hustling days, intoa job as a cars sales manager.

“I was really good,” he laughs. “I rose all the way up the ranks so quickly.”Three years later, in 1999, childhood friend and NBA star Penny

Hardaway, contacted Terry for a huge favor-move from Memphis to Phoenix,Arizona to become his business manager. Hardaway was playing for thePhoenix Suns.

Terry and Lynda's move to Arizona was a major stepping stone for thecouple both spiritually and professionally. While in Phoenix, they both attend-ed the Ministry Training Institute at Azusa World Ministry. They each laterreceived their Bachelor degrees from Friends University in 2005.

It was while attending classes at Azusa they met then CCC East Pastorthe late (great) Allen Landry. Pastor Landry taught classes at Azusa-and theseed was sown.

In 2004, Hardaway was traded to play for the New York Knicks, so theStarks Family was on the move again. Shortly after Terry and Lynda settledinto their new home, they opened a church named “A Wise Man ChristianCenter” on 130th and Lennox in New York City. Starks's church services tookplace on Saturday nights, which gave he and his family the opportunity toattend Sunday services at CCC East under the Pastoral leadership of his for-mer professor, Allen Landry.

While at CCC East, Starks met Apostle Price's brother-in-law,Baltimore “Uncle Balti” Scott and with his and Pastor Landry's help, Starks'own church began to grow.

“I decided that I wanted Apostle Price as my mentor, my role model,”Starks says.

The Word says for “those who have ears to listen, let them hear,” andthat's exactly what Terry and his wife did, but he admits that he almost blew it.When Pastor Allen Landry and his lovely wife, Julie, moved back to LosAngeles, he was succeeded by Pastor David Sparks; who later stepped down.CCC East was without an official pastor for a year. It was during this time thatthe Holy Spirit started revealing to Terry what his next assignment was tobecome.

“During that year that CCC East was without a pastor, when God toldme 'this is why I brought you to New York,'” Starks explains. “One Thursday

night, Apostle Price declared that the church will have a pastor within thenext 60 days. Before going to bed, my wife and I talked about who could beamong the list of potential candidates for the position. That next morning,Friday, I woke up to spend my quiet time praying with the Lord. That's whenhe told me 'You just gave your church away'. I immediately repented; told mywife what He said and she repented. That next day, Saturday, was when I gotthe phone call from Apostle Price, offering me the job!”

For the last two years, Pastor Terry and First Lady Lynda Starks havebeen taking CCC East to a new level. Lynda's vision for renovation andorganization of the church's building and staff has not only beautified theproperty, but also reinforced parishioner dedication.

“We assessed the skills and talents of the membership to find out whocould do what to improve the church building,” Lynda says. “We announcedfrom the pulpit that we were looking for members of the congregation whowere licensed plumbers, etc. who could volunteer and help.”

Among the many improvements already made have been in to the nurs-ery, which used to be a drab, dark space in the church basement. Accordingto Lynda, with membership dedication and sweat, a knocked-out wall, andsome paint, the nursery has been transformed into a bright, colorful, inspira-tional location within the church.

“It's a building that is simply stunning but there are so many infrastruc-ture issues such as plumbing, electric conversion, and the need for air condi-tioning, but the bones of the building are excellent,” Lynda explains. “As any-one knows about NYC, parking is at a premium. We want to construct aparking lot for the church that we believe will spawn church growth.”

According to Terry, CCC East's growth has steadily been on theincline as close to 1,000 people attended services this past Easter Sunday, thuscreating the need for extra parking. They hope to score at least 500 more park-ing spaces in the future. Among the ambitious projects focused on areexpanding the church's Helps Ministry, Wedding, Bereavement and otherauxiliary services.

A Faithful PartnerI want to thank everyone in the Price fam-

A Shining ExampleWe have been studying God's Word with

Apostle Price since 1971 when, by chance, weran across your program one Sunday morning. We have never forgotten how you drilled it inour hearts and mind to “walk by faith and notby sight.”

You inspired us so with how you wereable to bring your four lovely children up tohonor and reverence God-that is how we knewyou were a man of God. Many years before youtaught about racism in America, my husbandonce said to me, “I wonder what Dr. Price'sthoughts are concerning racism.” When youtaught on Race, Religion and Racism, weknew for sure that God was in charge.

Ministry ConnectionsI am currently a member of Spirit of

Faith Christian Center but have benefittedfrom the Ever Increasing Faith TV ministryand watching via Streaming Faith online.Dr. Price, you have been my spiritual leadersince the early 1980s when I was in the mili-tary. Through the tapes, I was able to listento you everyday and learn about walking byfaith.

I met you once in Maryland at aFaithPartners breakfast. I met Dr. MichaelFreeman that same day. He was kindenough to give me the phone number to thechurch to call for directions. But I knew myhusband would think the locations were toofar so I continued to watch you on TV andthe internet. I also confessed Mark 11:24 thatthere would be a church I could attend thatwas closer and that my husband would alsoagree to come with me.

One Sunday, I could not connect to theonline to view the service from CrenshawChristian Center. I remembered Dr.Freeman and looked up Spirit of FaithChristian Center and was able to watchtheir Sunday service online. One Sunday, Iheard Dr. Freeman announce that he wasgoing to open a third location in theColumbia, Maryland area. The location isabout 20 minutes away from my house andmy husband agreed to go with me to thegrand opening. I joined that night because Iwas connecting to a ministry that I know you

approved of and would have good ground tosow my seed in. Several weeks after I joinedSpirit of Faith Christian Center, my hus-band confessed Jesus as his Lord and Saviorand became a member of Spirit of Faith.

I thank you for being faithful to Godand all that He has given you to do and forbeing my spiritual mentor in teaching andguiding me in my faith walk all these years.

'm no medical scholar, but I do know there is verylittle known about the prostate-the very small, albeitimportant male reproductive gland. So little is knownthat many don't even know how to pronounce it. It's pro-nounced prostate, (PRA STATE) not prostrate, whichis the position you assume when you go to bed or whenyou're dead.

But, as little as we do know about this gland, itserves a very important function. Its job is to provide thefluid that transports sperm out of males and into theirloving wives. (At least that's what it is designed to do.)Needless to say, the prostate gets a workout. Sometimesit also gets attacked by cancer cells. When it does, it hasa tendency to swell. The swelling is basically unde-tectable in men. It often shows up in the form of an inter-rupted urine stream when a man relieves himself. Thisinterruption can include sporadic dripping, some pain ordiscomfort or frequent urination.

When this happens, your body is talking to you in the bestway it can. What its saying is: use the force Luke, go to the doctor andfind out what's happening. A wise man will have already been to the doc-tor for regular check-ups long before the prostate starts acting up. Bydoing so, the doctor can detect the enlarging of the prostate through adigital examination, using his gloved fin-ger and by a simple blood test.

Therein lies the rub (pardon thepun.) Some men feel it's an insult to theirmasculinity for another man to run hisfinger up his rectum. Unfortunately, cemeteries all over the world are filledwith such guys. They're men all right-dead men. If you still have a problemwith the procedure, get a PSA bloodtest. Don't allow yourself to suffer anagonizing, long, painful death. PSA is:Prostate specific antigen, a protein pres-ent in men's blood that is used to screen for prostate cancer.

If an enlarged prostate is detected, the doctor then recommends afurther test be done called a biopsy. This is an outpatient procedure, done right in the doctor's office. What he does is anally inject an anesthe-sia to deaden the prostate, similar to what the dentist does prior to work-

ing on your teeth. It's pretty painless.

Then, he uses a small snipping device to extract very smallsamples of the prostate, from various locations around it. The sam-

ples are then sent to a lab for study. The lab in turn will examine thespecimens and make a determination as to whether the sample is benignor malignant. Wikipedia defines benign as: A mild and non-progressivedisease. It further defines malignant as: a corresponding medical termused to describe a severe and progressively worsening disease.

In my case, I did all I was supposed to do. I visited my Urologistannually, however one day he detected some swelling and a change in myPSA levels. We agreed to do a biopsy and the tests were negative.Because of my elevated PSA, it was recommended I see the Urologistevery six months instead of annually. I did this over the next few years.

One day, the biopsy came back positive for prostate cancer. Canyou imagine my shock and disbelief when I heard the news? I thought thedoctor was on drugs. (Whether or not he was, had nothing to do with thediagnosis.) After explaining that this was a fairly common occurrence, especially in African-American males my age, he proceeded to educateme in what my options were.

He went so far as to suggest we just monitor the progress of thecancer and see how aggressive it was. Needless to say, I wasn't interest-ed in monitoring anything but a second opinion. This I did and unfortu-nately, it confirmed the original findings.

I was in my late 50's. I lived a good Christian life. I believed Godfor my healing, my health and my welfare. How did this happen? It did-n't take me long to decide that if my faith wasn't up to the task of prevent-

ing the cancer in the first place, the last thing I was going to do was to tryto use my faith to get rid of the cancer. If I had weak faith, I had to dealwith it, but I wasn't going to let it kill me.

My wife and I agreed, we weren't going to watch and wait and seewhat the cancer was going to do, it had to go. I made arrangements tohave what is called a robotic prostatectomy. That is a robotic surgicalprocedure that physically removes the entire prostate, cancer and all.Sorry sperm, it had to go.

The surgical procedure is donethrough small incisions in the lowerabdomen. Being a little overweight, theUrologist recommended I lose s fewpounds to make his job easier. He went sofar as to recommend I use the services of atrainer to see that I lost at least 15 pounds, whereas if I tried on my own, I may loseonly a few pounds.

I hired a trainer for both my wife and I and we both lost weight bymy surgery date. The surgery was uneventful and successful, thanks be toGod. Total hospital time was three days. Home recovery time was threeto four weeks.

The aftermath is that my internal plumbing has been switchedaround. I've had to learn to do the things I've been doing all my life, a dif-ferent way. Now, you may wonder, if the gland that makes sperm is miss-ing, what does that do to your sex life? Well, let me assure you, all's well.Mrs. Evans is happy and not just in the fact I'm still alive, which is a plus,

but she's really happy. To God be the glory.

Bottom line, exercise your faith now on the little things. When youhear you've got a terminal disease, it's a little late to start though notimpossible, but why wait? Start now. Stop smoking, stop drinking, exer-cise, eat more live foods like fruits and vegetables and less red meat, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. I didn't say don't eat them, but eat moreof the live foods. See the doctor regularly, do what he or she says andyou'll live and not die.

Remember, take care of your prostate and you won't end up pros-trate.—EIFBottom line,

exercise your faithnow on the little

things.

he was the most temperamental child inthe “Let Me Tell You” Foster TheatreProject. We all understood.

At 12 years old, she had already been in and outof 9 foster homes. She was currently living in agroup home where she attended school. Her con-stant concern is that she doesn't know where hersiblings are. Although she is the smallest child inthe group she demands the most attention.

Imagine my surprise when reading her note inthe thank you card I had received from the chil-dren! While most simply signed their names-Thecard said, “U R the BEST”-the child who neededthe most hugs and private talks wrote, “Thank youfor helping us.”

This is pure and undefiled religion in the sightof our God and Father, to visit orphans and wid-ows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstainedby the world.

(James 1:27 NASB)

The word “visit” means “to help”…

The “Let Me Tell You” Mentor/FosterTheatre Project was a collaborative effort betweenthe Department of Children and Family Services, the Jahi ANT Production Company, andCrenshaw Christian Center (CCC). This pilotprogram served a multi-level purpose:

1 To develop an opportunity for mentors to interface withfoster/adoptive children, ages 12-15 by driving them toand from Saturday rehearsals at the church;2 To enable children to build their esteem through the-atre-dance, singing, drama-by providing a forum for themto tell the stories of why they were in foster care;3 To put faces and stories to the statistics by providingprospective adoptive parents the opportunity to meet realchildren who are immediately adoptable.

CCC members were recruited to serve asmentors and received DCFS clearance along withspecialized training. On Saturday mornings work-ing in teams, they transported children to and fromthe church for _ day rehearsals. On August 29thand 30th, 8 very nervous 'tweens and teens partici-pated in performances in the Youth ActivityCenter.

Some children were still too heart-broken totell their stories. Other stories broke our hearts…

“When I was 3 years old, my mother felt thatshe was too young to be a mother, so she put me infoster care…She was on drugs…”

“I've been in foster care my whole life. Mymother was abusive… Isn't there someone outthere who wants a daughter?”

“I was walking home from school…the socialworker told me to get my clothes…my mom was inhandcuffs, my dad across the street in a policecar…”

“My brother died right in front of me…He was18; I was six…I didn't know what to do…he [wasshot and] just died right in front of my face…mydad didn't care…”

“My mother is doing her own thing. My fathertravels a lot for work, so he put me back into fostercare…”

Mentors listened to these stories for threemonths and sought ways to build bridges withthese children, to establish meaningful relation-ships that would last a lifetime. (Statistics demon-strate that once foster children reach the emancipa-tion age of 18, they have few ties with adults. Withlimited social skills, they are homeless, jobless, orpregnant within a year-and-a-half.)

Was the project a success? Here are thereports from a few of the 30 mentors.

This experience as a mentor has been a posi-tive one for me and the youngster with whom Iwas paired. Our relationship has grown from theawkward first "road trip" from the foster home to acomfortable growing relationship of trust andsharing. I will continue to build on the relation-ship we have established. To facilitate this, I havestarted the clearance process with the Departmentof Children and Family Services (DCFS). I amalso interested in other programs sponsored byDCFS such as Kid Save, the week-end care pro-gram that allows children to stay with adults whohave clearance so that foster parents experience amini-break from their fostering responsibilities.-Loretta Cooper

I was blessed with the opportunity to workwith Barbara [not her real name]. When I initiallysigned up to participate in the program, I thoughtit would be to sow into the life of a hurting child. Iquickly found myself reaping so many more bless-ings than I had ever expected.

During the 20-minute drive to and fromchurch, Barbara and I talked and she shared withme her hopes and dreams for her future. I quicklyfound that she was just like any other teen. Sheloved to listen to music. Her favorite artist wasBeyonce'. I often allowed her to listen to songs aswe drove to and from church. At times, we would

discuss the music, and I often cautioned her thatwhile the beat was nice some of the lyrics wereinappropriate.

One day as we were driving home after arehearsal, she turned on the radio and a song cameon with inappropriate language. Before I couldsay anything, she turned off the radio, looked at meand said that she didn't like the lyrics to that song.

Another memorable experience was the timethat we shopped together for her outfit for the pro-duction. Barbara was so excited to receive her$100 gift card [from DCFS] but as you can imag-ine, shopping with a 13-year-old girl has its ownunique challenges. She needed a little extra guid-ance and encouragement about selecting an appro-priate outfit for the performance. Of course shetried on several outfits until she found just the rightone. We had some minor disagreements, but in theend, we were both satisfied with her final selection.

The night prior to the performance weekend,Barbara's other mentor, Patricia Tucker, and Itook her to the beauty salon to have her nails andhair done. It was such a blessing to see how sucha small act could bring so much joy to a child!

Most of the time that we spent together, Iwould allow her to talk. Sometimes it's just impor-tant to listen and not be so quick to jump in andhave an answer to every problem. A child needssomeone to listen, which is what I often did. There came a point in time when I asked Barbaraif I might share about my faith with her. She glad-ly welcomed it.

I told her how much the Heavenly Fatherloved her and that He had a good plan for her life.I asked her if she wanted to receive the Lord JesusChrist, and her answer was, “Yes.” We prayed theSinner's Prayer in the church parking lot. Beforewe went inside, I encouraged her to share hergood news with others. She simply told them, "Ihave God in my heart!" How beautiful is that?

As the program began to draw to an end, Ibegan to see Barbara differently. I wanted morethan just a mentor/mentee relationship. I wantedto help make her dreams come true and have a"Forever Family" of her own. I told Barbara thatmy husband and I wanted to get to know her bet-ter. Her question to me was, "Does this mean thatyou want to adopt me?" I told her that my heartwas open to it. My husband and I had alreadybegun the process for adoption...

[Since the production] I have spoken toBarbara by phone. I find myself thinking of heroften and praying for her safety, peace of mind, anda successful adoptive family. I hope that my hus-band and I will be able to adopt her and give herthe loving home that she desires and deserves. Dr.Tolbert, I thank you for all that you have done tosupport us in our efforts to adopt.-Chandra Cole

Ariel [not her real name] was my mentee. Theone thing that we had in common was music. Weboth like music! So to introduce her to Gospelmusic or even just positive music to listen to, I firstallowed her to listen to whatever she wanted to onthe radio whenever she rode with me. She had herstations locked in, so when she got in the car, we

parenting matterswould listen to music and sing together.

She really didn't like rap, but Rock 'n Roll washer cup of tea. Some of her songs I knew and shewould be surprised when she realized we wouldjust be driving along singing together. She reallyenjoyed that.

One Saturday when I had to pick her up I wason a fast. I listen only to Gospel when I'm fasting. She got into the car, and I told her about my fast. She asked what it meant and I explained that Iwanted to be clear about a few things so I wantedto hear from God. I further explained that the fastwas my way of getting out of the way so that Fatherwould know I was sincere and really wanted tohear from Him. She listened to the music andenjoyed it. She was also a lot calmer that particularSaturday, too. The next time she rode with me, Ihad a CD that belonged to my daughter, and itwas playing when she got in the car. It was aGospel Rap/Rock 'N Roll band. She said, "This isgospel?" I said, "Yes, Gospel comes in all styles justlike any other music.” She really enjoyed listeningto that CD.

She said she was an atheist, but she enjoyed lis-tening to Gospel music with me. I told her that“God is good, and He has good music, too!” Thatwas a wonderful experience for me and for her.-Meredeth Livingston

Hearing what some of the youth had gonethrough in their young lives was heart-breaking attimes, yet it inspired me to make whatever differ-ence I can make in their lives. It stretched me andgrew me on a couple of levels.

First, I am remaining in contact with mymentee and will be present in his life as much or aslittle as he wants. I also told the other youth thatthey can call on me if necessary.

Secondly, I enjoyed watching him and the oth-ers grow. What a difference from when they start-ed the theatre program. Seeing them blossom intheir own way was rewarding.

I think Donald [not his real name] learned andsaw that others cared and were vested in him suc-ceeding in life. With the consistent encouragementthat he received from me and his other mentor, Ibelieve he became more confident with his abilityto achieve his goals and dreams. He has an inter-

est in attending church with me now. Sometimeshe attends a church near where he lives. He indi-cated that he will become more consistent in pursu-ing the things of the Lord. He's a Christianalready, and he is hoping to get back with his birthmother/family so he wasn't really interested inbeing adopted.-Emma Simmons

Initially, my husband didn't want to attend thementor meetings because in gatherings like this,he's usually the only male. In the end however, hethanked me because he found it very rewarding. Not only did this experience bring us closer togeth-er, but it also added the one ingredient that wasmissing from our family. Let me explain …

Andrea [not her real name] was the child thatwe drove to and from rehearsals. Even though theproject ended a few weeks ago, we are still main-taining contact with her. This past weekend, withthe social worker's approval, Andrea spent sometime with us at our home. On Sunday, she came tochurch with us. She received Christ, joinedchurch, and was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Besides that great news, we are currentlygoing through the Foster/Adopt process to getlicensed in order to adopt Andrea. We're workingwith the social workers, but Andrea doesn't wantto wait until then to live with us. She's 15 and shewants a family now. So we are going to becomeher foster parents while we wait for the adoptionprocess to finalize. The social worker says thatAndrea is really resilient and very good in school.

While she was at our home, we visited theschool she'll be attending in our area. We askedher to think about whether or not she really wantsto make this change. Andrea says, “Yes,” she reallyneeds a change… She's especially excited abouthaving her own room and bathroom.

Andrea has never had anyone to sit down andtalk with her. She feels that she is just moved fromplace to place. She needs someone to love her, carefor her, and give her stability.

Over the weekend we walked through themalls and looked at school clothes. She was reallyexcited about that. Afterwards, we went to a popu-lar local Chinese restaurant-a first for her.

At home, we sat down and talked until 1 a.m.-

girl talk! In the morning, Andrea fixed her ownbreakfast and she seemed as if she really felt athome. The weekend went too quickly. We weresupposed to take her back to the foster home onSunday after church, but Andrea wanted to stayanother day. Since that Monday was a holiday(Labor Day), the social worker said that it was fine.

Andrea is very talented and has a very goodsinging voice, so I gave her some suggestions sinceI had experience from singing in the choir. My hus-band and I are concerned about her school andcareer and will be working with her to pursue hergoals. Andrea sees how this dynamic is working-husband and wife.

We all prayed together. Andrea even prayedand blessed the food at breakfast. She needsencouragement and someone who'll be there on aregular basis. I see her flourishing already.

We've always been told that we would be theperfect parents. Now, we have an immediateopportunity, so we thought, why not contributesomething to another child's life? This is right forus. She has a forever family now. We thank Godfor this opportunity to change a child's life.

Of the children who participated in this proj-ect, several have been identified for adoption. Onthe night of the production, once the official part ofthe program ended, the ministry portion began.Minister La Nej Garrison, M.A. who during herearly childhood had been in foster care, shared herdynamic testimony. Several foster children andadults-all visitors-prayed to receive Jesus Christ asSavior.

We all agree that this is a wonderful begin-ning. But to echo the words of Edward Carter,“We must do more!” —EIF

make it happen

ndonesia is the world's largest Muslim country with over 280 mil-lion muslims.

Central Java, is primarily composed of 6 major Indonesianprovinces. With a population of over 35 million barely 2% claim to beChristian. Believers estimate that the actual percentage of born againbelievers are significantly lower. Over 98% of the population practices amixture of Islam, Hinduism & Buddhism.

This region is also known as a breeding ground for many localfundamentalist, extreme groups that have carried out terrorist actsworldwide.

Having planted churches & ministered in Indonesia for over 14years, Dr James Tan was led of the Lord to host a 3 day conference inCentral Java in May 2009. What was originally planned as a churchwide conference soon evolved into the largest regional conference everheld with over 4000 in attendance! Some of the conference attendeestravelled almost 10 hours to be in the services. Also present were over250 pastors representing some 90 churches from 4 provinces.

“We had been led to pray for that particular region for afew years& had watched with dismay when radicals had attacked the Churches& an earthquake struck the area afew years back. But we knew thatthere is much power in praying according to God's Word! Althoughwe had planted many churches in Indonesia & have various otherchurches & ministries affiliated with our ministry (CovenantFellowship Of Ministries International) ,we did not have anycontacts in that region. So we set our faith for adoor to be open so that the Word of Faithwould have an entrance into thoselives!” declares Dr Tan.

With an emphesis offaith in the integrity ofGod's Word, the teach-

ing at the conference produced immediate results. Many were heal &delivered. Local papers reported of a lady who was undergoing kidneydialysis. After hands were laid on her, she went to her Docter the nextday & after a series of test, return on the last nite of the conference witha medical report that her kidneys were functioning normally! Over 600muslims responded to invitations for salvation by accepting Jesus asLord!

One of the CFMI churches in that region reported that after theconference, they have seen a 20% increase in Sunday service attendance. They even had to start a branch church in a neighboring town becausea Javanese speaking man who had attended the conference got healed& after he told the people in his town over 20 others got saved.

During the conference, inspired by the Spirit, Dr Tan declaredthat he would return to assist in training the Pastors & leaders in thatregion. Immediately scheduled for 2009 / 2010, the School of Ministrywill be conducted over 10 individual 4 day sessions. The 1st session washeld in Aug this year & over 350 pastors from across the region attend-ed!

“ This is an unprecedented time in the history of this region tomake a lasting impact for the Kingdom. Where Christians were perse-cuted & churches burned as recently as 5 years ago, we now have anopportunity to influence this entire generation with the Word of Faith!”says Dr Tan. He continues, “The Word of God does not change & isnot affected by a person's geographical location or social status. TheWord will work for “whosoever will”…& we are witness to God's faith-fulness!”

With the ongoing outreaches of crusades, churchplanting & mentoring of Pastors, future plans

are on the way for a full time MinistryTraining Institute. Long term

humanitarian outreaches,include orphanages &

schools in the villages.—EIF

the word of faith

THE 80-10-10 PRINCIPLEby Dr. Gene Lingerfelt

I was sitting on my patio last fallwatching a lone squirrel. My, was he busy!Totally energized and motivated, he scam-pered around the oak trees, picked upacorns, and took them to a safe place tostore for the winter.

I thought, “He doesn't have a fore-man or a Harvard MBA telling him what todo.” He was diligent in going about his busi-ness.

That little squirrel was practicingpart of a simple, yet profound strategy for alifetime of personal fulfillment and financialsuccess. I call it the “80-10-10 Principle”-aformula as to how you handle the moneythat flows through your hands.

Breaking it down into dollars andcents, out of every dollar, 80 cents is yours tokeep and spend as you choose. However, what you do with the two “ten cent” piecesdetermines how you will prosper both spiri-tually and materially.

IT STARTS WITH PERSONALPRODUCTIVITY

There is a common misunder-standing among many Christians. Theyattempt to use faith in God as a solution toproblems that can only be solved throughplanning and action.

For example, let's talk aboutbeing overweight. I've met sincere believerswho ask the Lord to take their excesspounds off, when all that is really needed isan action plan, will-power, determination, and consistency.

The same principle applies toboth work and investments. Speaking per-sonally, I don't sit at home, laze around, donothing, and then expect God to bless me.This is foolish, because if you take zero andmultiply it by a thousand, you still get zero.

So we have to start with some-thing-and that something is the result of ourindustry and work. In other words, we mustearn money to have money. Without thisfirst step, there is nothing to give or grow.

To increase your wealth factorand become financially independent overtime, you need an action plan and a develop-ment strategy that is faithfully followed. Itwill work for anybody.

THE FIRST “TENTH”

If eighty percent of the money that

we acquire through work, investments, inheritance, or from any other source is tospend as we please, what about the remain-der?

It may come as a surprise to you,but ten percent of the money is not yours tobegin with. It rightfully belongs to God,and you are only holding it temporarily untilyou can return it to Him. We're talkingabout the tithe-God's admission price

to His covenant of prosperity. The word “tithe” as a noun means

a tenth, or ten percent. But tithe is also averb. When you bring your tithe to the store-house there is action involved. And, as wewill see, it unleashes an awesome power.

Let's begin with the basics. Theground you walk on doesn't belong to you.“The earth is the Lord's, and everything init” (Psalm 24:1).

Whether you are a farmer whogrows crops, a miner who digs coal, or a car-penter who builds houses, you are usingresources that were placed here by theCreator-and He still owns every inch of theland and the waters of the sea.

Since He has granted you theright to use His property, there is only onecommand He asks in return: “A tithe ofeverything from the land, whether grainfrom the soil or fruit from the trees, belongsto the Lord; it is holy to the Lord” (Leviticus27:30).

THE SECOND “TENTH”When my wife, Sue, and I

returned to the United States in 1983 fromserving as missionaries in Africa, we hadvery little financially-about $20,000 in equityfrom the sale of our first home. We plowedthat money into starting the church we nowpastor.

Yes, we preached faith and I con-fessed the promises of God's Word that Hewanted me to be the head not the tail, and toprosper in all things. But I have to admitthat

I was complaining to Him regardingour lack of financial resources.

Then one day in prayer the Lordclearly spoke to me: “You don't have anymoney because you never save any money.”

God gave me this word of instruc-tion: “Save something every seven days, evenif it is only five dollars.”

The Lord was telling me, “Howcan I bless you if you spend more than youmake?”

So, starting in 1989, I began sav-ing at least something every week. Withintwo years I had reworked my budget so that

I was able to save or invest at least 10 per-cent of my income-and I have never fallenbelow that level.

During one of those years, Ireceived a raise. But I told my wife, “We'renot going spend any of this increase. It is allgoing into savings.”

I finally reached the 80-10-10benchmark. The 80 percent was mine tospend, 10 percent belonged to God, and Ieither saved or invested the last 10 percent.

I firmly believe that because I wasfaithful, both spiritually and materially, Godallowed financial miracles to come my way.For example, in 1991, just two years aftermaking my life-changing commitment, Ibecame involved in a home transactionwhere the buying price was so drasticallyreduced that it resulted in a $150,000 equitywindfall. And not long after this, anotheropportunity presented itself with an evenlarger reward.

I am not revealing this informa-tion to brag, but within four years after Godgave me His instruction, I was a millionaire. This is why I can personally tell you the 80-10-10 plan really works.

It's not just because you are sav-ing and investing money. There is a greaterfactor at work. When you are being totallyobedient to God's Word regarding bothtithing and investing, you are giving theLord something to bless, and He places Hisfavor on whatever you put your hand to.

I keep urging people to make anearly start. When they do, the numbers arein their favor. Let's say a young man finds ajob at the age of eighteen that pays only$20,000 a year. Even though he has no col-lege education and starts at this low wage,he sets aside 10 percent of what he makeseach year and averages a 5 percent raiseannually. With the normal 10 percent his-toric stock market average increase, by thetime he is 65 years old he will be worth $3.7million.

This is why I say that everyAmerican should retire a millionaire.

OVER AND ABOVE

We know that God requires Histithe be returned to Him-10 percent of every-thing we earn. And we also have learned thedynamic principle of saving or investing thenext 10 percent so that our personal wealthwill grow. We are left with 80 percent-oursto spend as we please.

However, scripture gives us cleardirection as to how at least some of ourmoney is to be used. The Bible not only

Page 23: EIF Magazine - Fall 2009

23EVER INCREASING FAITH MAGAZINE Fall 2009

speaks of tithes, but “offerings” (Malachi3:8).

These are two distinct forms ofgiving. The tithe is God's requirement, while offerings -over and above the tithe-arean amount of our choosing, but still expect-ed by our heavenly Father. It is this secondform of giving that transforms abundanceinto super-abundance.

Here's how I explain the differ-ence. The tithe is what turns the engine on;offerings are what pushes the accelerator tothe floor!

By following the 80-10-10 princi-ple, what I earn from investments is enoughto create a positive cash flow. Then, becausemy store of seed has increased, I am able togive offerings to the Lord's work-and theybecome larger and larger gifts over time.

The biblical principle of sowingand reaping is based on our giving.Offerings are how we sow the seeds now tolive in overflow later.

If you make an unbreakablecovenant with God to live the 80-10-10 life, Iguarantee you will receive blessing, abun-dance, and the favor He has promised.

Don't waste one more minute.Start today!

Q&A with Drs. Fred and Betty Price

Unless otherwise indicated, Scripture quotations mentioned aboveare taken from the New King James Version of the Bible.

Do you have a question on your mind? Write to us at: Ever Increasing Faith Magazine, P.O. Box 44185, Los Angeles, CA 90009 or e-mail [email protected].

I was teaching on faith's greatest enemies at aseminar one time, so I used 1 Peter 5:7, as one of

the foundation scriptures. I talked about how weare supposed to cast all of our cares upon God.When I finished my class, one of the students, asked this same question.

This is what I told her to do. “Get an 8_ x 11 piece of paper. At the top of the page write'My Cares,' 'My Burdens,' 'My Worries'-in otherwords, all the things that you are concernedabout. Then start listing all those things.

When you have listed all of your cares, take that list to the waste paper basket and say,"Lord, these are my cares. This represents all ofmy cares-my children, my husband, and so on.

I told this lady, “Ball up that piece ofpaper and say, 'I don't know where Your hand is,but right now by faith, this piece of paper repre-sents all of my cares. I can see that basket whichrepresents Your hand, and I can see this piece ofpaper, so Lord, right now, in the name of Jesus Icast all my cares on You.' Then drop that paperright into the waste paper basket."

When you do that you are saying thatall your cares are on that paper in the basket -- inGod's hands. Now, leave it there. If you leave itthere, guess what? That makes you free, so nowby faith you must act free.

Free people do not stay up all nightwringing their hands worrying about husbands, wives, children or jobs. People who have cast allof their cares on the Lord do not have those caresany more. Their minds are clear, because theyhave no cares.

One of the things that people often dois that they take their burden to the Lord, butthen after they're through praying they pick itright back up and take it with them. You can tellbecause they still talk and complain about it. Ifyou cast your cares on the Lord, you are totallyfree from them. That is the way you have to act.If you do not act free, that is an enemy to yourfaith, and it will destroy your faith.

I find myself constantly worrying about things. I know the Word says to cast our cares upon God, but how does one do that?
