1- INTRODUCTION:
The U.S. Constitution provides for the presidential form og ovt. the farmers
of the U.S. Constitution spent a lot of time in de!iding upon the method of
ele!ting the president. "fter a good deal of dis!ussion the# adopted a plan of
indire!t ele!tion of the $resident %# ele!toral !ollege &hi!h is no& em%odied
in "rti!le II' se!tions 1' ( and ) of the Constitution.
(- *U"+I,IC"TIONS ,OR T $RSIDNT:
The Constitution imposes three tests on a !andidate for the presiden!#.

" Candidate must not %e less than ) #ears of age
/II0 CITI2NSI$:
" Candidate must %e natural %orn !iti3en of the U.S.".
/III0 RSIDNC:
" Candidate must have resided fourteen #ears &ithin the !ountr# ho&ever it
is not to %e interpreted as a !ontinuous and uninterrupted period of 14 #ears
pre!eding ele!tion.
)- 5OD O, +CTION:
The mode of ele!tion of U.S. $resident is the indire!t one the !onstitution
provided that the president should %e ele!ted %# an ele!toral !ollege
!onsisting of as man# presidential ele!tors as is the num%er of mem%ers in
%oth the ouse of the !ongress.
4- ST"S O, $RSIDNTI"+ +CTION:
In prati!e there are follo&ing stages of the ele!tion of U.S. $resident.
/I0 NO5INTION O, $RSIDNTI"+ C"NDID"TS:
The !andidates for the presiden!# are nominated %# the parties. Sin!e 16)('
the t&o ma7or parties i.e. the Demo!rats and the repu%li!ans have
esta%lished the pra!tive of !hoosing their representatives at national
!onventions.
/II0 CO5$"IN:
"fter the nomination of the $residential Candidates and their su%se8uent
ele!tion %# their respe!tive part# !onventions' nation-&ide presidential
!ompaign starts.
9 The parties set up national and states !ommittees and open
head8uarters in t&o great !ities.
9 a!h part# issues a !ompaign te;t-%oo< &hi!h !ontains the parth
platform' the %iographies of the !andidates and other material re8uired for
propaganda purpose.

The ne;t stage is nomination of the presidential ele!tors in the several states.
These ele!tors are important part# leaders.
/I=0 +CTION O, $RSIDNTI"+ +CTORS:
The ne;t stage in the $residential ele!tion falls in Novem%er of the ele!tion
#ear &hen presidential ele!tors are to %e ele!ted. Se!tion 1 of the "rti!le II of
the Constitution of U.S.". deals &ith the ele!tion of presidential ele!tors

/i0 Num%er of $residential le!tors:
The ele!toral !ollege !onsisting of as man# presidential ele!tors as is
the num%er of mem%ers in %oth the house of the !ongress. "t present there
are to %e )6 mem%ers in the ele!toral !ollege as the ouse of
representative and senate !onsist of 4)6 and 1>> mem%ers respe!tivel#.

a!h State is to appoint as man# ele!tors as' it has senator and
representatives in the !ongress.
/iii0 5ethod of le!tion:
The method of ele!tion of $residential ele!tiors has %een left to %e
determined %# the state legislature !on!erned. To %egin &ith' the# &ere
ele!ted %# the state legislature. No& the# are ele!ted %# the people of the
state !on!erned.
/iv0 le!tion of $resident %# le!tors:
The presidential ele!tors meet in the !apital of ea!h state on the ?rst
5onda# after the (nd @ednesda# in De!em%er and Re!ord their votes for the
$residential !andidates.
/v0 =oting:
" !erti?!ate of ele!tion is then sent to the !hairman of the senate %#
ea!h state on Ath' Banuar#' the !ongress meet in a 7oint Session' &here votes
are !ounted. The person se!uring an a%solute ma7orit# of votes is de!lared
ele!ted. To se!ure a%solute ma7orit#' a !andidate must re!eive (> or )6
votes.

6- SUCCSSION:
The "rti!le II' Se!tion I' !lause of the !onstitution provides that if president
Fs o!e falls va!ant due to his death resignation' impea!hment or ina%ilit# to
dis!harge the po&ers and duties of the said o!e' the vi!e-president
su!!eeds to his o!e for the remaining period of his term.

the people the presidential ele!tion !ompaign %egins a #ear and four months
%efore the ele!tion da#' !osting the !ountr# more then one %illion dollars and
is perhaps the longest and most !omli!ated pro!ess.
