    O DEUS, EGO AMO TE

    My God, I love thee: not because

    I hope for heaven thereby,

    Nor because they who love thee not

    Must burn eternally.

    Tho, O my Jesus, Thou didst me

    Upon the Cross embrace;

    For me didst bear the nails and speaAnd manifold disgrace.

    And grief and torments numberless,

    And sweat of agony;

    Even death itself - and all for me

    Who was thy enemy.

    Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ,

    Should I not love thee well?-

    Not for the hope of winning heaven,

    Nor of escaping hell;

    Not with the hope of gaining aught,

    Not seeking a reward;

    But as thyself hast loved me,

    O ever-loving Lord!

    Even so I love thee and will love,

    And in thy praise will sing,

    Solely because thou art my God,

    And my eternal King.

    Greetings to all Konkani Speaking brothers and sisters, devotees of St. Francis Xavier,

    I am glad and delighted to see that we all Konkani speaking faithful gather round everyday infront of St. Francis for the novena an

    Eucharistic celebrations. St. Francis is the patron for missions and for preaching the Word of God, he is known as Amcho Goyanch

    Saib. He came from far distant land to teach us the love of Christ.

    As we celebrate goodness of Gods love and life, through the intercession of St. Francis , let us proclaim the wonderful things the Lor

    does in our life. Let us number the blessings we receive day by day. Let us keep the spirit of St. Francis active and alive in and throug

    us today to the world.

    I wish all of you a happy love lled feast of St. Francis Xavier.

    Who is a saint? What makes someone a saint? were the questions thepriest asked during one sermon. I do not remember the occasion or thetime, I think it was on some feast day of a famous saint, but I rememberwhat went through my mind that moment.

    I am an average Christian. Holy Mass once a week or on special occasions,few daily prayers, some evenings Rosary with the family to soothe tension,a visit to the Sacrament Chapel or a small lonely church when feeling low, toust sit there alone in the quite, reecting, talking to myself...and sometimesto God. What I rmly believe is; if I recite, accept and follow that onebeautiful prayer, The Lords Prayer Our Father, then I will be able to liveas a true Christian, and will have more chances of reaching heaven someday, possibly with a short stop in between. But with all my shortcomings likentolerance, anger, impatience, arrogance etc. sometimes to do that littlealso becomes difcult.

    Who is a Saint? What makes someone a Saint? Most of the saints I hadread about were foreigners and from different era. In my childhood I hadheard about our own Sr. Alphonsa from Kerala. Later there was MotherTheresa, whose work we have seen and heard live. Denitely a Saint. Whoelse... My thoughts drifted towards another person I used to see since mychildhood. Laxmi.

    She was a lady with no home and no family, and who was said to bementally ill. Early in the morning she would start from one part of the smalltown, cleaning and sweeping shop fronts and footpaths and ending up in oneparticular place, where she would enjoy the company of street dogs andcats that playfully used to follow her everywhere. Children used to teaseand throw stones at her. A few took advantage, like a small restaurantowner who made her clean the big cooking vessels, the cow shed, etc inreturn for stale food. This went on for many years and when she became oldand frail she nally made her home in a covered front of a small old shop.

    Adjacent to that I had my small ofce on the rst oor of an old buildinOnce in a while she used to sweep the corridors of our building and resthere. Few good people were there who used to give her some proper foobut again most of it she used to feed to her dogs. She used to address mas son and was very happy to see one painting I did of one old lady, tellineverybody that it was her portrait.

    Some said she was from a rich big family and was ill-treated, as a resuof which she became mentally ill. It must have been the truth because oncI heard her explaining to one old man the elaborate preparations for som

    ritual. Another day one gentleman came to me asking her whereabouthe said he just tried the medicinal herbs she had described and thpreparation as per her instructions and was completely cured of AsthmHe left with me some money for her. Once in a while I too would buy hefavourite packed lunch of sh curry and rice and give it to her. She woueat it only after making sure that I had my lunch. Once there came anothold frail and sick beggar, who was unable to move much and she cared fhim, cleaned and fed him too for many days.

    She died a few years back. I heard in her last days, she was cared fby the same Auto drivers of the stand nearby, who used to tease her, maher angry and laugh at her tantrums. That place and the few years I spethere were a lesson in humanity. A few villains were there in the guise oso called respected people and there were saints too, amongst ordinary anrough people.

    I also remembered the few lines of a poem I wrote almost 40 years bacI was just starting on my life journey; Mother Theresa was not that famouthere were no living saints in the Church, so I wrote in my ignorance:

    Sausaraanth astam santh konnie jallonaamMunis hanv, munshea bari jiyetam...Living in this world, no one has become a saint.I am a human, and I live like a human...

    Life has taught me differently.The sermon was over. I was happy, that may be I had found a saint.
