This marks the eighth Annual Commencement Exercises of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, which was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 197 4 and opened in September 197 6. The Law School is committed to excellence-making a contribution to society, legal education, and the profession. Its course of study, leading to the Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree, prepares students for both traditional and emerging forms of professional legal practice as well as for positions in business, public service, and other areas where a legal education has relevance.
The Law School's purpose is to achieve the great goals of legal education articulated in 1935 by Associate Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo of the United States Supreme Court: "We are trying to teach law and to study it scientifically, and yet imaginatively too-feeling our way to a new sense of its significance, of the forces that have brought it into being, of the processes that are keeping it alive, and of the ends that it must serve and foster if its high potencies are not to fail."
In recognition of the vital role of the library in the education of the law student, the Law School is seeking to develop a facility to rank among the outstanding legal libraries. The three-level, 45,000-square-foot Lillian and Rebecca Chutick Law Library houses more than 215,000 volumes, including collections of statutes, reports, digests, and periodicals. Major holdings include the Barry Schreiber Law Library and the Louis and Ida Shlansky Family Foundation Collection of Jewish and Israeli Law.
We honor by name those whose benefactions have contributed substantially to the founding and development of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law: Brookdale Foundation; Lillian and Rebecca Chutick Law Library; Jacob Burns Moot Court; Sidney Weisner Lecture Hall; Furst Faculty Lounge, donated by Melvin J. and Gerald Furst; Fay Rotenberg Student Lounge; Tonkin Lecture Hall; library reading areas: Joseph M. and Dorothy Drexler, Joe and Celia Weinstein; and a growing number of Cardozo Fellows.
The lobby of the Law School was reconstructed through a major gift from Stanley E. Stern, vice chairman, Yeshiva University Board of Trustees; Jacob Burns, chairman, Cardozo Board of Directors; and other members of the Cardozo Board.
The Dr. Samuel Belkin Chair in Law and Society memorializes the late President of Yeshiva University who died in April 1976. A distinguished scholar and educator who served YU for more than 35 years, he established the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and appointed the late Monrad G. Paulsen as its first dean.
Other chairs have also been established to help ensure the quality of instruction and scholarship at the School: the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Chair in Law; Max Freund Chair in Advocacy and Litigation; Dr. Herman George and Kate Kaiser Chair in Constitutional Law, held by Prof. Telford Taylor; and Herbert and Florence Tenzer Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics, held by Dr. J. David Bleich.
The David Berg and Family Scholarship Fund benefits pre-law students from the undergraduate divisions of Yeshiva University who will be entering Cardozo School of Law.
The Sarah Korein Scholarship Fund assists students at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law as well as other graduate and undergraduate divisions of Yeshiva University.
The Alexander Fellows Program, established in 1982 by a gift from the Bertha and Richard G. Alexander Foundation, offers students the opportunity to serve as student clerks in the chambers of distinguished federal and state jurists.
A substantial gift from Jacob Burns, augmented by a challenge grant from the Horace Goldsmith Foundation, has allowed the establishment of the Jacob Burns Scholars Program.
The Harry Koeppel Memorial Lectureship was established in 1983 by Robert A. Koeppel, treasurer of the Cardozo Board, in memory of his father, with New York City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin the first incumbent.
The Leonard and Bea Diener Institute of Jewish Law, established in 1984, is a multifaceted program exploring the relationships and commonalities of American and Jewish jurisprudence. ·
The Stephen B. Siegel Program in Real Estate Law enhances the curriculum, as well as faculty and student research.
The Bet Tzedek Legal Services Clinic for the elderly and poor was established through Cardozo's first grant from the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
The Law School offers the first criminal appeals clinic in New York State-and possibly the nation-in which students actually argue appeals in court.
The Center for Law and Health, sponsored jointly with Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, deals with the education of lawyers and health care professionals regarding a wide range of regulatory and ethical issues.
Another major component of the Law School is its broad spectrum of student publications, including the Cardozo Law Revie~ Arts and Entertainment Law Journa{ Women's Annotated Legal Bibliography(funded by Louis Bacon in memory of Gertrude Bacon), the Cardozo Law Forum, and the ASILS International Law Journal. Student sponsored activities include voluntary competition in the Jacob Burns Moot Court, the Arts and Entertainment Law/Moot Court Competitions, and the Student Bar Association.
