Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back into Term 3. Thank you to the many parents and carers who are supporting our students in arriving at school on time and ready for the school day.

Our Breakfast Club run by the Red Cross is well attended each morning, many thanks also to this organisation for their ongoing support for our students.

Over the holiday period some students/families incurred issues with online games. This type of entertainment can be a lot of fun but it can also result in Cyberbullying. Our classes will be discussing what this means, however, it is a parenting responsibility. Check out this site for more help: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/screen-smart-to...

Class News 6B

STEM Transition Year 6 have been excited to take part in the STEM

transition program to the high school.

This has involved designing and creating our own

planes out of balsa wood, fixing a motor and wheels

to them, then using a machine to launch them. On

Friday we were lucky enough to have the

opportunity for our planes to take flight. Some of the

planes were very successful with the fastest plane

flying successfully at a speed of 27km/h.

We would like to thank Mr Banks at Bega High School

for helping us with this fantastic project.

Keep an eye on our facebook page for the video

footage.

Recorder Group

Eight of our students Chelsea B, Lilly L, Alyce C,

Chloe L, Sophie J, Heather M, Bella B and Ayesha S

travelled to Sydney last Sunday to perform with

900 other public school students from throughout

NSW in the Festival of Instrumental Music at the

Sydney Opera House.

The students played treble and descant recorder.

It was a wonderful event and such a thrill to be

playing in a 900 piece ensemble at Australia's

most famous and beautiful venue. The group

stayed at the YHA at The Rocks in Sydney.

They were accompanied by Mrs McVeity. Thank

you to the parents who also accompanied the

students. Many thanks also to Mrs Bennett who

rehearsed with the students for many months to

prepare for the performance .

Kindergarten 2020 We have now started taking enrolments for Kinder-garten 2020. If you, or anyone that you know, has a child ready to start school next year please come and pick up an enrolment pack from our front office.

Congratulations Melica! As part of our Extension Writing Group, we look for real life opportunities to take our writing further, into the world beyond our school. As Authors, we love others enjoying and learning from our writing. Some of our group entered the Young Writers Competition run by the Eden Access Centre. This competition is for both secondary and primary students in conjunction with Youth Week.

Melica M won the $100 first prize for the Primary Aged division. There was a 500 word limit on the story or poem entered. Melica's beautiful story may be published in the Eden Connection Newsletter. Congratulations Melica!

See our digital version of the newsletter for Melica’s story.

Class News 1/2B At the end of term 2, we really enjoyed our visit to Life Education and seeing Healthy Harold again. We learnt about safety and keeping ourselves healthy and happy.

In 1/2B we have been focusing on doing some number problem solving activities. Our goal is to be more flexible with numbers.

Term 3 is very busy already and we are excited for the Innovate and Create Day next week as well as the K-2 Play in week 5.

Library News—Book Week and Book Fair

The BOOK WEEK parade and BOOK FAIR will be Week 3 Term 3. The theme for this year is: “Reading is my secret power”. Students can come dressed up as a book character that has had a POWERFUL effect on them or is memorable in some way. It could be a character from a recent book or a book they read many years ago, but has left a lasting impression. Wednesday 8th August—Wish List Students will come to the library with their class to view books that have been supplied by Candelo Books. They will make their “wish list” then take it home and show parents the title and cost. They will bring the money on Thursday in a sealed bag with the title and cost of the book/books they wish to purchase. Thursday 9th—Book Parade and Book Fair Students will come to school in their costume as the parade will begin at 9.15 and they can bring their uniform to change later. All parents and family members are very welcome to watch the parade. After 10am the students who are purchasing books will come to the library to pay and collect the books. Parents and family members are also welcome to buy books directly from the book Fair on Thursday. The school will earn 10% of the Book Fair takings which usually is used to buy new books for the library.

We need at least three new volunteers to be able to provide Ethics classes at Bega Valley PS for everyone who this program for their child. This year we only have one volunteer who is teaching Stage 1 Ethics. It would be wonderful to hear from anyone else who would like to volunteer. Ethics classes are run on Tuesday afternoons at Bega Valley PS. Ethics classes include scenarios, poems and stories, group work and activities to encourage the children to think about what they should do in different situations, about how circumstances might make a difference and about the consequences of their actions. Ethics classes can be taught by parents, carers, grandparents, other relatives or members of the community. Lessons are fully scripted and training is provided. If you would like to consider volunteering for Primary Ethics, or know someone who might be interested, please apply online at www.primaryethics.com.au/volunteer or contact Carey Francis [email protected]

Hope—By Melica M.

Primary Division Ever since my dad died I wasn’t really an interesting person… I was always lazy, boring and not as bright and happy as I used to be. Mum tried to cheer me up by buying me presents and taking me to playtime (an ar-cade play centre nearby), but it never really worked out. I grabbed my favourite book off the dusty shelf that I haven’t touched in months, which is next to my bed. I dawdled past the kitchen and stopped to get a packet of chips. As I opened the cupboard, my mum yelled from a dis-tance, “Catrina!” “Yeah!” I responded loudly so that she could me hear from her bedroom. “You haven’t been outside in two days! Go do some-thing!” My mum yelled. “Fine!” I muttered with a gasp of exhaustion. I went out to the veranda and closed the door behind me. As I headed towards the foot path, I gradually start-ed to walk on the unstable planks. My mind faded away to another place where no one else is there. I kept walking and getting closer and closer to the leopard patterned bark that clings onto the sweetgum tree. The branches were long and wide with enormous star shaped leaves that prevent the sun from coming in and protecting me with shade all year round. I sat down comfortably, with my legs bent to help my book stand up, and my back against the trunk of the tree. Sudden-ly, the wind started blowing furiously making my page blow back and forth in my book. The book suddenly rolled off my lap. “Ugh! My book!” As I chased after it, the book rolled under the gate and onto the road. I scurried past the gate and chased after my favourite book, every step I took I heard an engine roaring closer and closer towards me. I finally stepped onto the road with my favourite book in-between my feet. I looked up onto the road to see a set of beaming lights flash into my eyes. Just when the car was about to hit me, the leaves rattled, the branches vibrated and the wind whistled. Everything surrounding me stopped like a broken clock. I was ready to get hit by the car, to end my sufferings of my dad dying. My hand covered my eyes to stop the beaming light of the car. I heard a voice in the back of my head “Catrina, it’s okay.” It was a familiar, but deep and friendly toned voice. “Who’s that, am I dead, are you god?” I asked confused and scared. “Turn around.” said the voice I heard in my head. “All I see is the tree, what do you mean?” “Exactly, Catrina, it’s me… your Dad!” “Dad!” From then on, I communicated with my dad every day

while sitting by the tree. I finally started to go outside

for my dad and … live.
