• 여성들이 암병원을 선택할 때에는 신문, 방송, 인터넷, 광고 등매스컴의 영향을 가장 많이 받는 것으로 나타났다.

General advice on effective communication skill• 의사가 들어본 적 없지만 찾아 보고 다시 이야기하자고 하는 것은 괜찮음. When a clinician is presented with unfamiliar materials, an answer such as ‘‘I don’t know, but I will review the information and get back to you’’ has been described as ‘‘acceptable’’ and not indicative of ineptitude or inability.

• 환자 스스로 노력하는 적극적인 태도를 칭찬하는 것은 효과적일 수 있음.Positive reinforcement of Web-informed patients can also be effective, praising efforts to be knowledgeable and taking an active role in decision-making and management of their condition.

• 의사의 동의 여부와 무관하게 진지하게 경청함을 보이는 것은 환자 만족을향상시킴.

Recent evidence suggests that the health care provider’s demonstration that the patient’s information is being taken seriously (even when a provider disagrees) improves patient satisfaction.

• 온라인 정보 활용은 환자-의사 관계를 향상시킬 수 있음. Use of Web information can enhance partnership between doctor and patient. 성찰해 볼 문제들

세탁기가 인터넷보다 더 변혁적이다

• 세탁기가 어떻게 인터넷보다 더 변혁적인가.세탁기 등 가전제품이 가사노동을 쉽게 만든 덕분에 여성들이 노동시장에 진출(취업)할 수 있게 되었다. 미국의 경우, 세탁기가(20세기 중반에) 대중화되기 전까지 일하는 여성의 50%가 가정부였는데 이런 직업이 거의 소멸되었다. 또한 여성들이 돈을 벌수 있게 되면서 서양에서도 남아선호 사상이 점차 사라졌다. 세상이 바뀐 거다. 또 19세기 전보의 발명도 좋은 사례다. 이전에는정보가 대서양을 가로지르는 데 2~3주가 걸렸다. 이 시간을20~30분으로 단축했다. 정보의 속도가 몇 천 배 빨라진 거다. 그러나 인터넷은 이전의 팩스와 비교할 때 메시지 전달 속도를 기껏해야 열 배에서 백 배 올렸을 뿐이다. 인터넷이 너무 과대평가되고 있다.

그런 과대평가가 경제정책에도 안 좋은 영향을 미치는가.새로운 것에 너무 현혹되다보면 정책을 잘못 쓸 수 있다. 예컨대‘정보통신 기술로 국경이 없어진다’며 무리한 개방을 한다든가, 혹은 ‘지식 사회니까 제조업보다 첨단 서비스업을 육성하자’는정책 담당자들이 좋은 사례다. 그러나 현실을 보면 서비스업으로사는 나라는 없다. (서비스업 강국이라는) 스위스·싱가포르 등도사실은 1인당 제조업 생산이 세계 5위권 안에 든다.

무례사회는 돈만 벌 수 있다면 인격모독쯤은 아무렇지도 않은 사회, 인간을 경시하는 사회다. 성형광고의 주체인 ‘의사 선생님들’의 경우에서 보듯, 이 사회를 지배하는 기득권 집단의 인식은 지극히 천박하다. 이들은 대개 이 사회의 교육과정을 가장 성공적으로 이수한 ‘우등생들’인 까닭에, 이들의 천민성은 그대로 사회의 성격을 대유한다. 인간에 대한 예의를 모르는자를 ‘모범생’으로 길러내는 무례사회에 미래는 없다.

대중들 또한 무례에 둔감한 것 같다. 그렇지 않다면 수많은 대중이 이용하는 지하철에 저런 파렴치한 광고가 버젓이 걸릴 수있겠는가. 어린 시절부터 촘촘한 경쟁의그물로 조직된 사회에서 일상적으로 너무도 많은 모멸과 무례를 겪어온지라 대중에게 남아 있는 자존감의 영토는 그리 넓지않은 것 같다. (후략)
