    Reading Comprehension for SpecialNeeds Student

    Special needs students have a difficult timelearning to read. So much focus is put into the

    phonics of reading that comprehension isoverlooked. It is important to be able to read,butequally important to understand what you read.

    In order to improve reading comprehension

    overall we have to first reach a series of smallwins to increase the students' motivation level.

    An explanation of my small win

    Creating small wins along the way heightensorganizational members motivation and demonstrates thatthe change process can be successful (CommGAP, 2012).

    The students was asked to read Hamlet in Class. Theplay took a couple of weeks to read. Several students

    who were slow readers had a difficult time following thestory. Several strategies was taken to ensure

    comprehension.

    After the students read the play, they also saw amovie enacting it. The students were asked to

    make connections from what they read to whatthey saw in the movie. The students were alsoable to make connections to right and wrong.

    While looking at the movie the students wereasked to follow along in their books. This

    helped them determine if what they visualizedwas correct.

    The students were split into two differentgroups, and was told to take side on whether

    or not Hamlet is justified to take revenge onhis uncle and mother. Listing actions, causesfor the action, and the effects of the action.

    The students were asked to make a list ofrelevant information and to write a paper and

    create their own play with an alternate ending.The play had to be a enacted as group effort.

    through their enactment.

    How the win will be publicized and towhom

    Since the play was enacted very well, we

    decided to put on a show for the whole school.People who were not in the class wanted to be

    involved in the Hamlet play that had an alternateending.

    Next steps for making continuousprogress

    Teaching the students to read between the lineswill be more difficult. Many students find it hardto find meaning from facial expression or from a

    tone of voice.

    Reading comprehension is important in everyaspect of life. It is important to understand what

    you read. In organization, understanding whatyou read can mean keeping your job or getting araise. At home, understanding what you read canbe a matter of not signing wrong the information.

    When a special need student understand whatthey read they can live a more independent life.
