There’s something reassuring about musical nostalgia, revisiting the past and digging into formulas you know willwork. Producers are delving into many eras of classic dancejust now, from the breakbeats and big riffs of hardcore to thesoulful sounds of ‘90s house. But there’s another way oflooking at it too. Our cover stars this issue Night Slugs (or labelbosses L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok) have made a virtue of digginginto the obscure crates of the past and finding records that, while unappreciated at the time, pointed to the sounds of thefuture. By recontextualising these, and placing them alongsidestripped-back new beats, they’re making a contribution tomoving dance forward by respecting its lineage.Similarly, Slam (also featured this issue) have found ways ofcombining analogue equipment with modern tech, and aremining arcane electronica to construct gleaming new sounds. In this time of instant gratification when many music websites seem blissfully unaware of dance history, it’s pleasing to knowDJs and producers both established and upcoming areconnecting to the past and using it to create something new.

WEEKLYNEWS

The Chemical Brothers have announced that they have a new album in the works, and it’s due to be released at some point in the new year.

Speaking to Barcelona’s Sónar festival, Tim Rowlands said: "The most important feature of the album is that it connects with us emotionally in some way. We hope for finding a new way to make you feel. We dream of new sounds and different frames. We have worked with some guest singers but mostly the album is pure Chemical Brothers."

The as-yet-unnamed record will be the boys first studio album since they scored the British-German film Hannah in 2011, and the announcement follows last week’s news that brother Ed would be retreating from his live commitments to pursue his studies. And while we might have to get used to seeing a lone Tim Rowlands dishing it out onstage for a while, Ed assured us that he's heavily involved in creating the new record.

Firechat may become primary messaging app

at music festivals

t a time when music festivals have surged in popularity, one

Auniversal struggle that organizers continue to face is the ability to provide suitable Wi-Fi and cell service for festival goers and

employees alike. New app Firechat, however, may be the next up-and-coming essential for large-scale events where cell phone towers may fold.

Firechat was created by San Francisco-based startup, Open Garden, and allows users to send and receive messages by using a smartphone’s Bluetooth and WI-Fi capacities to create a “‘mesh network’ of connected phones” — sans internet connection or cell service. Mesh networks permit the sender’s message to hit the receiver’s phone by passing through nearby devices. Whereas with traditional Wi-Fi and cell towers the more phones means weaker service, Firechat works best with a large volume of devices. The technology is possible because now Bluetooth and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi can extend 40 to 70 yards, allowing the formation of a network based on peer-to-peer connections.

Initially seen at Burning Man 2014 and again in Hong Kong during the government protests, Firechat is about to make its first attempt in the live entertainment sphere at the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in India. Open Garden’s CMO Christophe Daligault comments, “Hong Kong or Burning Man are both examples of situations where people either have or expect to have no connectivity whatsoever or patchy/unreliable internet/cell phone coverage. In fact, we had a big jump yesterday [Nov. 20] in Mexico, where Firechat jumped to No. 7 on iTunes because of the student protests.”

Riff Raff joins Golden Hare Management

Group, aims to be the ‘Justin Bieber of EDM

ouston based rapper Riff Raff has announced that he will

Hbe joining Golden Hare Management Group which boasts a roster that features Kygo and Thomas Jack. The deal

was set in place after Myles Shear and Riff Raff met on Diplo’s Mad Decent Boat Party over the weekend. Myles was intrigued by Riff Raff’s vision stating:

“My first impression of RiFF RAFF was probably similar to most, but when we really got some time to spend together, I really got to understand his vision and how wonderful of a job he has done maintaining his brand. He already is a dance act, and he could really do anything. That’s how creative he is.”

Riff Raff has previously flirted with dance music as he released his 2nd album Neon Icon through Mad Decent (he signed with the label in 2012).

"Q-Dance never disappoints" is what we kept

hearing throughout the crowds as we roamed

around hanging with the fans. Hardcore,

Hardstyle, Techno and Hardhouse lovers came

out to soak themselves in a world of familiar

faces and sound, making Q-Dance their home

Production was equip for an intimate vibe,

setting the stage for some major headlining acts

such as AUDIOFREQ, COONE, EVIL

TECHNOBOY, ZATOX, Hosted by MC Villain.

The heart of Los Angeles rattled at the sounds

of crowd favorites, italian Hardstyle DJ

Technoboy destroyed and took you on a hard

hitting journey that left hardstylers wanting more.

The Psyko Punkz definitely brought their

signature Dutch Hard-Hitting production and lit

the night up, shaking the stage and bringing the

"rage" level up a few notches . Koen

Bauweraerts, most commonly known as "

Coone" took over the stage with a great set

opening with some unidentifiably new material

we are all excited to hear more of.

Q- Dance is definitely a night were you will for

make many new friends as the true EDM lovers

come together basking in the world of Hardstyle.

Although this year we encountered many new

faces , TSOQ definitely has it's die hard

"regular" attendees - but one thing is for sure,

they all seem to be anticipating it's return next

year . We raged hard into the night and we have

the pictures to prove it - I'm sure we are not

alone as we look further to future Q-Dance

events.

he headphone industry has grown

Texponentially over the past 5 years, and the latest brand to take a shot

at tapping the DJ market comes from the high quality gaming device manufacturer Razer. Known primarily for their gamer-focused input devices, the Razer team has developed a host of headphones to suit both the needs of their gamer fanbase and the DJs they are trying to reach.

Two of the company’s newest products, the Razer Kraken Neon Pro and the Razer Adaro DJ, deliver a listening experience that will appeal to both casual fans and professional entertainers.

Razer slices into the DJ market with new headphones

Razer Kraken Neon ProComfort and aesthetics are key when it comes to the Kraken Neon Pros. Although not specifically for DJ use, the brightly-colored gaming headsets provide adequate range and bass response for a relatively low price point. Although smaller than the Adaro DJs, the Kraken Neon Pro’s are less travel friendly as they do not come with a proper case and do not fold for easy transport. Fantastic for home listening – not to mention doubling as a microphone for those moments when you’re doing more than just hounding SoundCloud – the Neon Pro’s make a great statement at their $89.99 price point.

Producertech Complete Guide To Compression ReviewIn this mini review we take a look at Producertech’s Complete Guide To Compression…

t’s the essential but often abused process of compression. This

Ionline course lasts a little over an hour and is divided into nine modules that can be streamed from the Live-Courses.com website.

Rob Jones begins with an overview of compressor basics, before moving on to cover attack and release, sidechaining, multiband and mix buss compression, de-essing, and working with kicks and vocals.

Although everything is taught using the excellent visual feedback of Ableton Live’s built-in compressor and analyser, all skills are fully transferable to any DAW. It’s wonderfully concise and easy to follow, ideal for those looking to learn the fundamentals.

Acon Digital Restoration Suite ReviewIn this mini-review we take a peek at Acon Digital’s Restoration Suite…

his has recently been updated to v1.5, and includes

Tfour plug-ins for cleaning up digital audio. DeNoise offers adaptive noise reduction for stationary noise

such as broadband, hiss, wind and buzz, whilst DeHum deals with mains hum and other tonal noises, and includes up to 96 harmonic bands for reducing complex buzzing.

The other two plug-ins are DeClip for restoring audio damaged by clipping, and DeClick, for removing clicks and crackles. We tested each next to the equivalent in iZotope’s recent RX4 and while RX4 offers more precise and scientific control, Acon Digital’s processors were easier and quicker to use with fairly close results.

One year ago, Kaskade took to Tumblr to express his gratitude for “all the ways life gives him what he needs:” family, friends, and freaks. As the season of giving unfolded, Ryan Raddon sought to give back to the people that made him the renowned DJ and producer he is today. Holiday-inspired tunes such as “Jesu Parvule,” “Still Still Still” and “Peace on Earth” are just a few of the records Raddon publicly shared as free downloads. In 2014, Kaskade is still giving. Each of last year’s offerings (except “Still Still Still”) are available for free download once again, with the addition of Ryan’s latest progressive house anthem alongside John Dahlback and Sansa, “A Little More.” Grab all thetracks here as they’re only available for a limited time.

Laidback Luke has been exploring myriad sounds and styles as of late. From “Stepping to the Beat” to “Bae,” van Scheppingen cannot be confined and shows little fear of experimentation. His latest undertaking alongside Uberjak’d, “Go,” marks the duo’s debut on Bingo Players‘ label, Hysteria Records. Though Luke’s admiration for deep house is no secret, the Dutchman returns to his electro house roots with the crowd-ready anthem, “Go.” Steady clapspair with percussive bursts, cascading into a flurry of oscillating synths ideal for listeners who can’t stay off their toes. Striking a melodic build at around the halfway point, “Go’s” brisk pops and stalwart structure compose the record’s identity as dance music’s newest powerhouse. Even Ultra and EDC Vegas aren’t prepared.

Harrnessing their new and evolved style for “Sleepless” and upping the ante on its follow-up, Cazzette present distinguished sound that opens an array of doors leading to blends of deep house. “Blind Heart” makes for the duos newest single, an acclaimed sequel almost unflawed as polished by vocals from Terri B — one that wouldn’t easily be reimagined. But Moogy take a swing at shaking things up and nail the remix opportunity on the head. The trio out of the UK dumb down the funky, eccentric nature of “Blind Heart” and reevaluate from its deep house core outwards — the outcome being a smooth listen and delicate landscape behind the songstress.

Wolfgang Gartner is the kind of artist whose releases you don’t take lightly. Back in September, the revered producer unveiled his first official single of 2014, “Unholy.” With an emphasis on superior song writing and soul influences, the track served as an enticing preview of

sGartner’s impending album. Now the electro hou e don has called on Amtrac for official remix duties. With a predilection for bangin’ house music, the Kentucky-born producer strips things back for a more straightforward club appeal. Bobby Saint’s vocals once again take center stage, bolstered by an arpeggiated bassline and shuffling hi-hats. Amtrac’s remix of “Unholy” will released on Kindergarten Recordings on December 1 alongside another official remix from Milo & Otis.

Gary Richards has the greatest job on the planet. By day he is the mastermind behind the astronomical success of HARD; by night he is dominating CDJs behind his Destructo moniker, pushing tech and deep sounds past their confines with his distinguished veteran style. Earlier this week, Destructo delivered the West CoastEP to add to his growing list of accomplishments.Richards has been known to tear genre boundaries down at his massive events, pairing the likes of 2 Chainz and the A$AP Mob next to marquee dance acts like Jack Ü and Knife Party on weekend lineups. Now, however, it’s Destructo’s turn, churning out West Coast with a star-studded roster of rapper collaborators. YG, Ty Dolla $ign, and West Coast rap legend Warren G all lend their contributions to the EP, making Destructo’s six-track collection a party-primed, wobbly shot of extra funky g-house. Playing on plucky bass lines and injecting fresh, hyping rap lyrics throughout, Destructo’s latest material is designed to rattle tents and club venues alike, delivering a grip of highly versatile grooves. The genre-crossing West Coast EP revives early 1990s rap trends that dominated when Snoop Dog, Tupac, and Dr. Dre were cementing their names as some of the genre’s greatest to ever live.

Long teased in live mixes and podcast guest appearances, “Jaboom” and “Mirek” have finally been let out in their full form by none other than Spencer Brown in collaboration with ICONS music. The progressive prodigy makes a massive statement with nearly twenty minutes of trance-inducing beats packed into only two productions. “Mirek” maintains a light atmosphere during its build and grows into a robust and relaxed track juxtaposed with the drastically contrasting “Jaboom,” an aggressive and driven production that packs a powerful punch. As the second original EP release from Brown, “Jaboom” and “Mirek” clearly succeed in carving out a wide lane for the young artist’s eclectic taste in music while serving to establish Brown firmly in the elite newcomers to the progressive scene.

As 2015 edges closer and the world anticipates the return of Avicii, new material has flowed more freely from the Swedish-based camp than ever before. Collaborations with Madonna, Wyclef Jean, and David Guetta have popped up recently after a long drought of new material while he was on the road. Fans can count on a follow-up to Avicii’s debut original studio album True next year, though details are virtually non-existent. What we do know, however, is that Avicii’s sound has continued to evolve and mature with each new release. After a recent announcement that he would return to the stage as soon as February, the PRMD camp pulled the trigger in releasing Avicii’s The Days / Nights EP, a four track collection with original songs and fresh remixes. “The Nights,” a track crafted by Tim Bergling exclusively for the FIFA 15 video game, joins acoustically-aimed song “The Days” as the two original productions on the EP. Remixes from Henrik B and Felix Jaehn complete the tracklist. While the original productions are not new, extended mixes available through Beatport provide fans with unheard material with more elaborate instrumental sections.z

Making her debut on Tiësto’s Musical Freedom imprint with one of her most-supported original mixes of her career, HELENA has released “Shake It.” A big room cut designed at the genre’s enormous festival stages, “Shake it” pushes past a melodic period and into a gritty plateau. With releases on Mutants, Ultra Music, and now Musical Freedom this year, the Los Angeles-based producer has quite possibly released her highest profile original mix to date before she takes to shows in Dallas, Scottsdale, and Miami Beachz

ready touted by Tiësto, Hardwell, Swanky Tunes, Afrojack and more, MOGUAI‘s latest accomplished more than most tracks ever do before it was even released. Now on Beatport courtesy of Spinnin’ Records, “K I X S” employs enough melodic fortitude to make the original mix a standout among the German stalwart’s arsenal. Rounding out a solid run of releases for 2014, which included a vocal mix to “Mammoth“, MOGUAI’s latest marks the producer’s sixth stint on Dutch imprint Spinnin’ Records.

with their recognizable wave logo and marble-like artwork, Next Wave Records has been one of the fastest growing brands to develop an avid user base with their mantra of free music. It has become home to some of dance music’s hottest up and comers, including Jerry Folk, Bearson, Dinnerdate, and many others. Today, Next Wave introduces Australian DJ/band duo, Atlas Bound, and their spine-tingling new single, “Talk.” Although its market thrives on its own domestically, some of Australia’s undiscovered talent remains hidden despite their refreshing styles. Atlas Bound brings a new type of sound to the table with their blend of future electronic elements and intricate indie melodies. “Talk” could be the track that turns heads in Atlas Bound’s direction. The Australian band slowly opens the track with a soothing, acoustic guitar strum to settle any environment down. The vocals sneak up on the instrumental – serenely resembling fellow Aussie, Chet Faker’s tone. The defining moment of the track enters about halfway with the heart-stopping, body-electrifying bass emitting “the feels” in every direction. Atlas Bound’s signature, hybrid sound definitely emerges unique in the dance music community, and this will definitely not be the last time we hear of them.

Earning over half a million plays this year alone, Toronto’s PUSHER is poised to be one of Future Bass’s biggest names, with his remixes of Jack U and Ryn Weaver earning praise from the scene’s top tastemakers (Diplo, Skrillex and Odesza to name a few) and landing a contract with 2+2, the high-profilemanagement team behind Zeds Dead, Keys N Krates and Grandtheft.Blending bass-heavy beats with neon- bright melodies, Pusher’s unique sound shines through on his latest release, “SCIENCE!,” available exclusively from Dancing Astronaut and Wavo.me. A track that he describes as: “Something a bit darker and more sub-based. I’ve been influenced lately by RL Grime, TOKiMONSTA, Djemba Djemba, Rustie, and a bunch of others, and I really wanted to try putting a neon spin on that type of sound.

Axwell & Ingrosso strike gold with the debut of their new single, using “Something New” as backdrop to Beats by Dre’s newest video promotion. Similar to previous campaigns by the headphones brand that’ve paired with large-scale events such as the Super Bowl and the World Cup, the latest pushes its #SoloSelfie concept. The ad featuring the newly reunited Swedish DJ is (in tradtional Beats fashion) star-studded, featuring everyone from Kendall and Kylie Jenner to Nicki Minaj and 2 Chainz, as well and the duo themselves. Spoiler alert: signature headphones-across-the-forehead appearance from Axwell. In interest to their upcoming music, “Something New” fits the promo’s production and its connectively concept perfectly, making for 60 seconds of a preview enough to not only warrant excitement for the record, but to decide it is time to take the partnership of Axwell & Ingrosso as more than just a Swedish House Mafia spin-off

Although part of the supergroup Hot Natured, Ali Love has continuously fueled electronic music’s release circuit with a heavy helping of solo productions. The newest came from his latest album this summer and among the full length project that’s stockpiled with heavily supported work, “Perfect Picture” was chosen for an extended remix package. Highlighting the package is Skream, whose haunting strings compliment the remix’s subtle bassline. With a new album that’s slated for a release in 2015, Skream may have given the electronic music world a small preview courtesy of this remix on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels.

jungle Terror movement leader, Wiwek, broke onto the scene not too long ago for his intuitive blend of tropical reggae rhythms and modern electronic production techniques. The Dutch producer recently attracted fellow dancehall enthusiast, Diplo, whobrought Wiwek onboard to his Mad Decent imprint for his newest release, “Ragga.” Wiwek delivers the jungle vibes right from the get go with a booty-shaking bassline and an infectious tribal call transporting listeners to the deep Jamaican jungles. About halfway through, a reggae vocalist swoops in to complete this track with perfect Caribbean flavor. Wiwek and Mad Decent have released the original as a free download which you can cop below.
