    Message of 25 May 2013:

    Dear Children, Today I call you tobe strong and resolute in faith andprayer, until your prayers have thestrength to open the Heart of mybeloved Son Jesus. Pray my children;pray without ceasing until your heartopens to Gods love. I am with you andI intercede for all of you and I pray foryour conversion. Thank you forresponding to my call.

    Be Strong and Resolute!Strong is the aith o he who believes in

    God and who believes especially in HisLove independent o wordly advice.Incomparably strong is Abraham's aithwhen he sets out to sacriice his only son(Gen 22:1-10; Heb 11:17-19). On the otherhand, weak is our aith when we totterbeore lie's diiculties, when we preercompromise to truth, when we turn toalse idols, when we preer comortablesolutions to a less-than-comortableevangelical lie.

    In a similar way also prayer can bestrong or weak. It is strong when it is truedialogue with God that nourishes a lie ograce. Prayer is weak when it is a commodityor an exchange; how could we think thatsuch a prayer could open our hearts to theHeart o Jesus? Not he who says, "Lord,Lord," can enter into the kingdom o heaven,but he who does my Father's will can enterinto heaven (Mt 7:21).

    Being in tune with God's will andconverting to Him has been Mary's dailyplea to us or the past 30 years. It is also

    what the Gospels have been teaching us ornearly 2000 years! God awaits us withgreat mercy. Mary is with us, intercedes orus and prays or us. Can't we see ? Yet todaythe world is not that o yesterday and theragility o our aith and the hardness oour hearts impede us rom seeing.

    May your prayers have the strength toopen the heart of my beloved Son!, Marysays to us today. Since we know how tenderand merciul and constantly open Hisheart is, we must assume that it is only ourown inconsistency that makes our prayerineective. here is no genuine prayer that

    remains unulilled, that alls on dea ears.hat's why Mary invites us to pray withoutceasing: not to multiply empty prayers, butto ind the right prayer, pleasing to God;the prayer that the Holy Spirit himselkindles in us. Peace and joy in Jesus andMary! N.Q.

    Open Yourselves to My Love!"God the Father gave his only Son to the

    world through Mary. Whatever desires thepatriarchs may have cherished, whateverentreaties the prophets and saints o theOld Law may have had or 4,000 years toobtain that treasure, it was Mary alone whomerited it and ound grace beore God bythe power o her prayers and the perection

    Mary was chosen by God, and atMedjugorje her presence is part o God'sdivine plan. As part o this plan each ous is called to decide whether to believe ornot, whether to accept or not this great gito God. Mary speaks clearly. All we need todo is accept with the heart.

    o those who complain about theMedjugorje messages being repetitive, weremind you that also the Gospel is thesame ater 2000 years! he novelty is notwithin the text, but in how it works in us.

    he novelty isn't to be ound in the words,but in what they generate in us. We are tobe the novelty! Mary says to us that shewants to bring us closer to her Heart so shecan bring us even closer to her Son's Heart,and be nourished by His Peace and Love.

    But is this what we seek? What is"peace" and "love" or us? He who loves his

    ather or mother, or child more than he lovesme is not worthy o me. He who does nottake up his cross and does not ollow me isnot worthy o me. He who will have kept hislie or himsel will lose it; and he who haslost his lie because o me, will ind it, - Jesuswarns us (Mt 10, 37-39). His words expressthe contradiction between divine Wisdomand human wisdom. Not only, but theyreveal the satanic deception at work sincethe beginning o time (cr. Gen 3:4-5).

    Lumen fideiLight of the Faith

    Following is a sythesis o Lumen fdei(LF), the frst encyclical that bears thesignature o Pope Francis.

    Light o the Faith (LF), given inthe Year o the Faith, 50 years aerthe Second Vatican Council, whichwas a Council on aith, gives new vigour to

    our perception o the amplitude o aith'shorizons. In act, aith is not something tobe taken or granted, but is a gi o God tobe nourished and strengthened. "He whobelieves, can see," writes the Pope, becausethe light o the aith comes rom God, and isable to illuminate all o man's existence.

    Believing means entrusting

    With the biblical gure o Abraham we seehow aith is "listening" to the Word o God,and a "call" to come out rom one's isolatedsel to open up to a new lie and a "promise"or the uture. Faith is also characterized by"atherhood" because the God who calls us isnot a oreign God, but God our Father, ounto goodness.

    Te opposite of faith is idolatry."Idolatry is always an aimless passing romone lord to another. Idolatry does not oer ajourney but rather a plethora o paths leadingnowhere and orming a vast labyrinth. Tosewho choose not to put their trust in Godmust hear the din o countless idols cryingout: "Put your trust in me!"

    Believing means entrusting oneself toa merciul love which always accepts andpardons. Faith consists in the willingnessto let ourselves be constantly transormed

    and renewed by Gods call. Herein lies theparadox: by constantly turning towards theLord, we discover a sure path which liberatesus rom the dissolution imposed upon us byidols." (no. 13)

    LF leads us to the gure o Jesus asmediator in whom is made maniest the loveo God which is the oundation o our aith."Christian aith is aith in a perect love,in its decisive power" but, "Faith does notmerely gaze at Jesus, or it sees things as Jesushimsel sees them," the Holy Father says.And just as we trust experts in our daily lives(such as architects, pharmacists and lawyers),

    "We also need someone trustworthy andknowledgeable where God is concerned," thePope points out. "Jesus is the one who makesGod known to us." (18) And when we share inJesus' love, which is the Spirit, we see with theeyes o Jesus and share in his mind and hislial disposition. Yet, "aith is not a privatematter, or a completely individualistic notionor a personal opinion. It comes rom hearing,and is meant to nd expression in words andto be proclaimed." (22)

    Faith needs truth

    "We need knowledge, we need truth,because without these we cannot stand rmor move orward. Faith without truth doesnot save." Te real meaning o "truth" is nolonger understood: "In contemporary culture,people oen tend to consider the only realtruth to be that o technology: as the onlytruth that is certain and that can be shared.At the other end o the scale we are willing

    2 to allow ors u b j e c t i v etruths o theindividual ...yet these aretruths validonly or thatindiv idual ,not deemedcapable o

    being proposed to others in an eort to

    serve the common good, while ruth itselis regarded with suspicion": as somethingimposed, that crushes the actual lives oindividuals. But this leaves us with relativism,in which the question o universal truth is nolonger relevant. "Te question o truth is reallya question o deep memory, or it deals withsomething prior to ourselves and can succeedin uniting us in a way that transcends ourpetty and limited individual consciousness.It is a question about the origin o all that is,in whose light we can glimpse the goal andthus the meaning o our common path."

    ruth needs love

    "Love and truth are inseparable. Withoutlove, truth becomes cold, impersonal andoppressive... Te truth we seek, the truththat gives meaning to our journey throughlie, enlightens us whenever we are touchedby love." Chapter two continues in theexposition o the knowledge o truth and love,a knowledge that is necessary to understandman's search and need or God.

    Church as storehouse of memory

    Chapter three concentrates on theimportance o evangelization. "Tose whohave opened their hearts to God's love cannot

    keep this gi to themselves" (37). Whileaddressing the question o transmitting theaith and being sure that we have encountedthe "real Jesus", LF points to the Church as aMother who teaches us to speak the languageo aith. "Te Church passes on to her childrenthe whole store o her memories" (40). Stressis placed on the importance o the Sacramentsas a special means or the transmission o theaith, together with the Lord's Prayer andthe Decalogue. "Te our elements whichcomprise the storehouse o memory whichthe Church hands down are: the proessiono aith, the celebration o the sacraments,

    the path o the ten commandments, andprayer" (46).

    Faith is good for everyone

    "Faith is a common good. It helps us buildour societies in a way that they can journeytowards a uture o hope" (51). Te Holy Fatherpoints to the amily as one o the importantsettings where aith is transmitted. "I thinkrst and oremost o the stable union o manand woman in marriage. Promising loveor ever is possible when we perceive a planbigger than our own ideas and undertakings.In the amily, aith accompanies every age olie, beginning with childhood." Faith is no

    reuge or the ainthearted - says the Pope -but something which enhances our lives; andwhen aith is weakened, the oundations olie also risk being weakened.

    Faith and painful testing

    Another setting lit up by aith is sueringand death. "Christians know that suering

    cannot be eliminated... Faith is not a lightwhich scatters all our darkness, but a lampwhich guides our steps in the night andsuces or the journey. o those who suer,God does not provide arguments whichexplain everything; rather, his response isthat o an accompanying presence, a historyo goodness which touches every story osuering and opens up a ray o light" (57).

    Mary's memory

    "Mary treasured in her heart all that she

    had heard and seen. She is the perect icon oaith. Her motherhood ensured or the Sono God an authentic human history, and truefesh" (59). o Mary, the Holy Father prays:"(...) Help us to be touched by his love, that wemay touch him in aith."

    Priest - ShepherdsIn nearly our months o Pontiicate, Pope

    Francis has assiduously spoken o how he seesthe role o priests.

    Be shepherds that smell of sheep!" (28

    March 2013). A priest has to have on himthe smell o those whom he pastors to. othis, Pope Francis added another "smell"when he said they must have the fragranceof Christ's (anointing) oil. Says the Pope:"A good priest is seen by how his people areanointed. his is a clear test."

    "When our people are anointed withthe oil o gladness, it is obvious: e.g. whenthey leave Mass looking as i they have heardgood news. People thank us because they eelthat we have prayed over the realities o theireveryday lives, their troubles, their joys, theirburdens and their hopes. And when they eel

    that the ragrance o the Anointed One, oChrist, has come to them through us, theyeel encouraged to entrust to us everythingthey want to bring beore the Lord: Prayor me, Father, because I have this problem,Bless me, Pray or me these words arethe sign that the anointing has lowed downto the edges o the robe, or it has turned intoprayer; in to prayers o the people o God."(28 March 2013)

    "We need to go out in order toexperience our own anointing, its power andits redemptive eicacy. A priest who seldomgoes out o himsel, who anoints little Iwont say not at all because, thank God,our people take our oil rom us anyway misses out on the best o our people, on whatcan stir the depths o his priestly heart.

    "Dear lay faithful, be close to yourpriests with affection and with yourprayers, that they may always be shepherdsaccording to Gods heart.

    he Gospel speaks o the shepherd whonotices that one sheep is missing, and heleaves the ninety-nine to go look or the one."He goes to look or one! (But) we have one(in the old) and ninety-nine are missing!We must go out; go out to them," said thePope. "We must ask the Lord or the graceo generosity and the courage and patienceto go out and proclaim the Gospel. It isdiicult. It is easier to stay at home with theone sheep and pamper it... but we priests,and we Christians, all o us: the Lord wantsus to be shepheds, not pamperers o sheep.Shepherds!" (17-06-13). www.news.va

    3Anniversary ofMedjugorje

    Reflection by Msgr.Giacomo Martinelli,delegate to thePontificia Accademiadell'Immacolata inRome and PapalChaplain.

    The 25th June isfor all of us the anniversary of Medjugorje.We know, however, that the f irst apparitionwas the day before, on the 24th June 1981;a day in which the Church celebrates theNativity of St. John Baptist.

    There are various reasons for whichthe anniversary is celebrated on the 25th.However, also the choice of the date itselfis significant. Our Lady at times choosescertain dates to express somethingimportant. For example, the revelation atLourdes of her name (I am the ImmaculateConception) was made on the 25th March,

    the feast of the Annunciation. As a matterof fact, it is in the Gospel that recounts theencounter between the Angel and Mary(Lk 1:26-38) that we find the fundamentalaffirmations upon which the Churchdefined the doctrine of the Dogma of theImmaculate Conception.

    So what is the reason behind choosingto appear the day before the first apparition;on the day dedicated to the Baptist? Johnthe Baptist is the Precursor, the one whocame to proclaim the coming of Jesusand to prepare the people to receive theMessiah, to "convert many of the childrenof Israel to the Lord their God" (Lk 1:16).Our Lady has taken upon herself this samerole, to call God's people - through theMedjugorje apparitions - to conversion.

    When we speak of "preceding" and of"preparing", it is meant in a chronologicalsense, visibly present in history, becauseChrist precedes everything; He is "begottenof the Father before all worlds". We menand women, however, need to be guidedtowards Him, to be prepared to become "aperfect people" (Lk 1:17).

    This preparation means making

    us open to the action of God accordingto how and when He chooses. It is notthe people who choose and establish themodalities of God's interventions. Theevents surrounding Zechariah, father ofJohn the Baptist, are clear. He becameunable to speak because he did not believe.It is only when he responds with an act ofobedience - writing: John is his name (Lk1:63) - that his tongue is loosened.

    Before God's signs, we too must get offour high horses of pride, and receive whatthe Lord gives us with a certain passivityand humility. We received everything

    from Him, even our life, and we have to behumble to accept to be put in our place.

    St. John the Baptist has within himthat inner light that allows him to clearlypoint out the Messiah to his followers. "Hethat shall come after me, is mightier thanI, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry;

    he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost andfire" (Mt 3:11). He is pointing out Christ,not himself, and this is fundamental forevery Christian because Christ aloneis Saviour. Christians are those whopoint to Christ with the way they live,their virtues, within the context of the"mission" according to his state of life, andif it is the case, with his preaching. Thisis exactly what Our Lady has been doinghere for years. The Baptist and the Virgin

    Mary can prepare a people to receive theLord because they know very well whothis Lord to be received is. John says atthe beginning of Jesus' ministry: "It is thebridegroom who has the bride; and yetthe bridegroom's friend, who stands thereand listens to him, is filled with joy at thebridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel,and it is complete. He must grow geater. Imust decrease." (Jn 3:29).

    John points out Christ, as does OurLady: "So I can bring you even closer tomy Son Jesus, to present you all to my Son"(25-06-2013).

    In her messages we see how Our Ladytries to bring us closer to Christ, to theChurch, to the Pope, to the faith! This taskis done not without a certain degree oftravail to make it possible for us to perceiveher voice within the shadows of our sins,the darkness that surrounds our heartsand the pagan mentality of our world.This new rapport with God, this walkingon the path that brings us closer to theLord, does not happen "mathematically".The dynamics in a relationship with Godand with Mary and the brethren is always

    hanging by a thread - so to speak - wherethe thread is the trust and love that ourheart has for the Lord. Satan tries to severthis thread, and for this reason our life offaith is often disturbed by a type of satanicshadow that stirs up doubts and fearswithin our hearts. Only fidelity allows usto defeat these shadows; a fidelity to berenewed constantly and maintained to theend. Our Lady and John the Baptist helpus by constantly indicating to us the signto which we owe our fidelity.

    Both of them perform another taskwhich is just as fundamental. The Baptist

    was a person who didn't mince his words:"Brood of vipers! Who made you think youcould flee from the coming retribution? ...Even now the axe is being laid to the root ofthe trees, so that any tree failing to producegood fruit will be cut down and thrownon the fire" (Mt 3:7,10). How many timeshas Our Lady called us to conversion, tochange our ways! How many times has shelisted and clearly described what she oncecalled "modern day sins"! (2-10-2010).

    Our Lady fights evil in an absoluteway because she is Immaculate. St. Johnthe Baptist was so radical and authoritativein asking others to repent and convertbecause he for first lived that same way: helived in the desert, was clothed in camelhair and ate locuts and wild honey. Itis for this that Jesus said of him: "Of allthe children born to women, there hasnever been anyone greater than John the

    Baptist" (Mt 11:11). Our Lady and Johnthe Baptist fight strenuously to combatevil and they call us to do the same. God'ssigns are clear. The decision is up to us.And today Our Lady wants to know whichside we're on, how we want to spend thegifts received at Medjugorje and how weintend to correspond to the graces receivedthrough her intercession.

    Message to MIRJANA, 2 July 2013:"Dear Children, with a motherly love

    I beseech you to give me your hearts,so I can present them to my Son andfree you; free you from all the evil thatincreasingly enslaves you and distancesyou from the only Good, my Son; fromeverything that leads you on the wrongway and takes away your peace. I desireleading you to the freedom of my Son'spromises, because I desire for Godswill to be completely fulfilled here, thatthrough reconciliation with the Heavenly

    Father, through fasting and prayer, theremay arise apostles of Gods love; apostleswho will freely and lovingly spread God'slove to all my children; apostles who willspread a trustful love in the HeavenlyFather and who will open the gates ofHeaven.

    Dear Children, offer your Pastors thejoy of love and support, just as my Sonhas asked them to offer to you. hankyou."

    On the 7th day of the 33rd year of herapparitions at Medjugorje, Our Lady givesus a message that is almost a summary ofher work. She came to bring the worldback to God, to deliver mankind from theseductions of the world that keep us fromthe only Good, Jesus Christ, because aftermore than two thousand years we still don'tknow that our salvation is in Him alone.

    The first part of today's message is avibrant petition by Our Lady to lead us toJesus. The contrast between good and evilis not a childish or naive way of reading andinterpreting History. The universal good isnot a mythical chimera, but the essence ofthe God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, andindeed of God's Plan for mankind who wasmade in His own image.

    For it to be fulfilled we must adherepersonallyto this plan by our own free will.This requires conversion (return to God),belief in His Plan and collaboration on ourpart in the building up of His Kingdomof peace and love. The more we surrendurourselves to God, the freer we are. God theCreator, our Father, wants us as children andhis will - which we submit to by praying the"Our Father" - is not to dominate over us,but to free us of every slavery, addiction andfear. It raises us to the state of childhood.

    "I desire for Gods will to be completelyfulfilled here, that through reconciliationwith the Heavenly Father, through fastingand prayer, there may arise apostles ofGods love." Our Lady is pointing out to usa programme of life, which doesn't mean"things to do", but rather a style of life thatpoints to God's Love.

    Pope Francis uses every occasion toshow his love and veneration for Mary, theMother of God. When he speaks hetransmits his filial relationship with Maryand shows his affectionate accord with herdesires which are so similar to thoseexpressed at Medjugorje.

    Pray, pray, pray with the heart. Pray theHoly Rosary, Mary repeatedly tells us, andtoday adding: Open yourselves my children

    to prayer; open yourselves to my love.Pope Francis echoes her calls. Last

    May, for instance, he said: "To listen to theLord, we must learn to contemplate, feelhis constant presence in our lives and wemust stop and converse with him, givehim space in prayer... Let us remember theLord more in our daily life! ... I would liketo recall the importance and beauty of theprayer of the Holy Rosary."

    A few days before his death, Padre Piowas asked to say something. With afatherly tone, he said: "Love Our Lady and

    bring others to love her too. Pray theRosary always!"

    Year of the FaithSuggestions from Medjugorje

    "Witness the faith with your lives, andpray so that day by day your faith may

    grow in your hearts."

    Faith lived out and not only stated,is not fruit of our abilities and capacities,

    but a gift offered to all and guaranteed byGod, for which we must ask with a sincereheart; and after accepting it, live it out ona daily basis. Easily said, but we all knowhow difficult it is to witness the faith withone's life. It is, however, what Mary asks ofus. And she too knows how difficult it isfor us. For this reason she urges us to prayconstantly that the faith might grow dayby day in our hearts.

    Prayer is vital to our faith. Our faithweakens and dies without the nourishmentthat comes directly from God when wecommunicate with Him through prayer.We need to learn to see prayer not onlyas a way to plead, praise and thank, butespecially as a way to communicate withGod, a means through which we remainin touch with Him.

    We must pray knowing that the HolySpirit will sustain our prayer to the pointof praying Himself in us (cfr Rm 8:26-27). I am with you, says Mary, and thisrenewed confirmation encourages us, butit still requires our free adhesion to whatshe asks of us.

    Mary's call is personal and universalat the same time. It is directed to each andevery person, but the response of each hasa universal value and therefore must besought, found and given in the Churchand by the Church.

    At Medjugorje in particular we seehow, with respect to the past, Our Ladyhas chosen a Parish as the place of herpresence and action of grace (Message01.03.1984). This is because the CatholicChurch is the custodian of the universalsalvation, and thus, a warranty for herauthenticity. This is important, so that thefaithful do not get lost. Only in Christ's

    Church can we find sure refuge: "And I sayto thee: That thou art Peter; and upon thisrock I will build my church, and the gatesof hell shall not prevail against it" (Mt16:18). Besides praying for ourselves, let uspray in particular for priests, according toMary's request in the messages entrustedto Mirjana.

    "A key actor or an exorcist is to know ithe person he is praying over is a person whogoes to Mass and tries to live a Christian lie,or it is useless or a person to want to receiveprayers o blessing i that person doesn't livea sacramental lie.
