What a time o grace this is! Both orthe liturgical time which accompanies usalong the path to Calvary and theResurrection, and or the historical time inwhich we live. he great, humble andpowerul gesture o Benedict XVI revealedto the world the suering borne by Peter'ssuccessors, and the great hope born romPope Francis's election. hese are eventswhich cannot leave us untouched. It is onceagain the work o Mary who constantly

calls us to the reality o a little once-unknown hamlet that has now become acentral motor that generates aith andhope. Are not these the ruits o a heavenlygrace?

It is true that the world continues in itscourse towards the abyss, that the solutionsproposed or the serious problems that lailmankind have little more than a palliativeor soporiic eect and are not able touproot evil. But it is also true that all thisshould not take us by surprise, or Scripturerevealed it all. And isn't this what Mary is

reminding us o in today's message? hatthe anchor o salvation isn't within us butexternal to us? Jesus Christ, o course, isour anchor.

I call you to take the cross of mybeloved Son Jesus in your hands and tomeditate on His passion and death, Maryurges us, together with St. John: "heyshall look on him whom they pierced" (Jn19:37). o look upon Him is contemplationand compenetration, till we rise in Him! Itis in him that mankind's cry inds responseand where our suering, united to His,inds and bears salvation. Christ became

like us so that each o us could be like Him,ollow Him, be assimilated in Him.

oday, on this east day o St. Joseph, wecelebrate the beginning o the ministery othe new Bishop o Rome, which also involvesa certain power. (...) Let us never orget thatauthentic power is service... and the Pope too... must be inspired by the lowly, concreteand aithul service which marked St. Josephand, like him, open his arms to protect allo God's people and embrace with tenderaection the whole o humanity, especiallythe poorest, the weakest, the least important(cr Mt 25:31-46). Only those who serve withlove are able to protect!

Te vocation o being a protector (also)means to protect people, show loving concernor each and every person, especially children,the elderly, those in need, who are ofen thelast we think about. It means caring or oneanother in our amilies. It means buildingsincere riendships in which we protect oneanother in trust, respect, and goodness. Inthe end, everything has been entrusted to

our protection, and all o us are responsibleor it. Be protectors o Gods gifs!

Here I would add one more thing: caring,protecting, demands goodness, it calls or acertain tenderness. In the Gospels, St Josephappears as a strong and courageous man, aworking man, yet in his heart we see greattenderness, which is not the virtue o theweak but rather a sign o strength o spiritand a capacity or concern, or compassion,or genuine openness to others, or love.We must not be araid o goodness, otenderness!

Ten there is one who tries to conoundour conscience: Satan, the ather o lies,is "homicidal rom the beginning", andor this reason, despite the beginning oa new lie received at Medjugorje, therestill exists the risk o this (new) lie beingaborted. Satan will try to seduce you with

his lies and by charming you with lust andgreed o goods.

Our Lady, however, always gives uslight with her messages. One o them inparticular might be just the therapy orour souls. "Dear Children, while withmotherly concern I look into your hearts,I see in them pain and suering. I see awounded past and a continual searching.I see my children who desire being happybut do not know how."Tis is exactly whateveryone who goes to Medjugorje desires:fnd some peace o heart, leave behind awounded past, a daily lie o oppressiveand harassing relations. Mary has come toshow us the way: "Open yourselves up tothe Father. Tis is the way to happiness;the way along which I desire leadingyou."

Tis reminds me o an example that Fr.Giussani oen gave. He'd say that i youput a child in a dark room and tell him tocross it, even aer explaining that there is

no danger and that he shouldn't be araid;he will be araid. He'll reeze with earand will be unable to move. Instead, whenhis mother takes his hand in that darkroom all his ears disappear and he'll walkaround in the room. Tis is what Our Ladyis doing with each o us. She is teachingus the art o living which Jesus showed usrom the Cross.

Dear Children, (...) God the Fathernever leaves His children alone, especiallynot in pain and despair. When youcomprehend and accept this, you will behappy. Your search will end. You will loveand you will not be araid. Your lie will

Above all, we mustbe convinced that we did not give this newlie to ourselves by ourselves; that we arenot capable o giving joy to ourselves. Atthe most - Pope Benedict XVI once said- we can organize a party, but we cannotorganize the joy, because this is a gif whichGod grants the soul. It is God who puts

love, peace and lie in us, who gives us HisSpirit, giver o every good. Tis lie mustbe kept saely in the daily Eucharist.

Years ago Our Lady had said in amessage: "Give God time, and God willgive you time,"and He will fll your dayswith an invincible strength. When we go toMass we hear the priest say, "Mystery o theaith," and we respond, "We proclaim yourdeath Lord." But why should a Christianbe happy to proclaim the Lord's death?Because in Christ death becomes a ounto new lie that enters the soul that receivethis regeneration. "Proclaim your death"

is to proclaim the presence o a seed oimmortaility that is now within us and thatopens wide our heart so it can blossom inthe ullness o lie, o love, o orgivenessand o brotherhood: an "atomic bomb"o Christ's presence within us that bearsstrength and joy that are worth even morethan our earthly lie.

Our Lady sacrifces hersel and oershersel precisely so that each o us mightbe able to saekeep this new lie, the lie oChrist present within us. Let us not reuseto open up our hearts to her, becausewithin our hearts there is present thisount o love that must be delivered up soit can bear light and peace to others."

Abstinence romood, or mechanical prayers are not enoughto stir in us that radical conversion o theheart which comes rom being immersedin Love.

Being one with the Father and withJesus is impossible or man but not orGod, because everything is possible forand in Him! and this al lows us to respondto Mary's wish, by surrendering ourselvesto God through accepting his Will in alllie's circumstances. hen, our lie will bea blessing or all whom we meet becausewe will be witnesses that God is in ourmidst. Vicka: It is a great joy and gift. We areprone to think that sickness or sueringcan't be seen as gits. What can we say?

When they visit us we MUS SAY: here I amLord, do with me as you will. We CANNOsay: this is too burdensome. No, we cannotsay this. He knows how much he can giveus and He knows how much we can take.We must also thank God for this gift andask Him or the strength and the courageto carry on. Our Lady has also said that wedon't know how much worth our sueringhas beore God's eyes! I am very happy whenI can oer up some orm o suering or herand or Jesus' sake. I always say: Jesus, I amready. I coness being rather surprised atMary's words in her message o the 25thMarch last when she used the verb BEGIN.We need to begin to do the things she hasbeen asking o us or over 30 years! So thequestion now is: How to begin? In His

Gospel, Jesus tells us that i we do notbecome as little children we cannot enterthe Kingdom o Heaven. hereore, Jesusand Mary want small, humble children.

In his last catechesis, Pope BenedictXVI expressed this intense desire: "Ishould like to invite all o us to renew ourirm conidence in the Lord, to entrustourselves like children in Gods arms,certain that those arms always hold us,enabling us to press orward each day,even when the going is rough. I wanteveryone to eel loved by that God whogave his Son or us and who has shown us

his ininite love. I want everyone to eelthe joy o being a Christian. In onebeautiul morning prayer, it says: 'I adoreyou, my God, and I love you with all myheart. I thank you or having created meand making me a Christian'. Yes, we arehappy or the git o aith; it is our mostprecious possession, which no one cantake rom us! Poverty and Renewal o theChurch: Hope aroused by Pope

Francis

Ignatius, ounder o the Jesuits, heldpoverty dear, and this love or poverty is

an integral part o Ignatian spirituality,as was seen in the person o Jorge MarioBergoglio, who as archbishop o BuenosAires had neither a personal driver nor anautomobile as most prelates would have. Heused public transport or his movementsaround the city, hopping on trams, busesand the underground. It wasn't a show osobriety, but a spiritual choice. Poverty,Ignatian style, nourished his soul.

he question that many have beenasking is: Will Pope Francis impose thissame style o lie upon the Vatican curia?Good examples attract and encourage

amongst religions, in particularly withIslam. he episode o St. Francis who wentto speak with the Sultan is emblematic. Itis poverty at the service o renewal o theChurch and o evangelization. It is a happychoice that is giving much hope.

he act that Pope Francis asked orprayer (at his election) and he remainedsilent with his head bowed to receive God'sblessing, allows us to see how he sees theChurch as God's people.

He bowed beore God's people. It wasa simple gesture, but at times a gesture isworth an encyclical.
